Red Bull Racing’s Heritage Team and Spanish engineering collective Andtonic adapted the RB8, the Formula 1 (F1) car in which four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel won the 2012 Drivers’ Championship, to run on Madrid Metro tracks. Because the RB8 and the rails themselves could not be reconfigured, the team developed custom metal wheels light enough to protect the car’s suspension, gearbox, and driveshafts.

In our latest challenge, we turned Sebastian Vettel’s World Championship-winning RB8 into a one-of-a-kind Madrid Metro train, showing every step of our journey from Milton Keynes to the Madring.

Once the RB8 was ready, former F1 driver Patrick Friesacher got behind the wheel and drove it through sections of the closed Madrid Metro network.

Behind the wheel was former Formula 1 driver Patrick Friesacher. And with the first turn of the wheels, he pulled away into Madrid’s  metro system.

LEGO enthusiast Bill Ward built a fantastic model of the Québécois experimental math rock duo Angine de Poitrine, inspired by their KEXP performance at ESMA in Rennes, France, during the Trans Musicales festival in December 2025. Ward was taken with the band’s music and costumes and created the LEGO model in tribute.

My latest original LEGO Creation is the wonderfully weird viral math rock duo from Quebec Angine de Poitrine. …The name “Angine de Poitrine” means the medical condition known in English as “angina pectoris” — chest pain, essentially. These two guys are incredibly talented musically, and have a great fashion sense too.

Simple Things – Surprising Histories explored why many coins have distinctive ridges along their edges.

Coins are one of the most common objects we use every day, but have you ever wondered why many of them have tiny ridges around the edge? In this video, we uncover the surprising history behind coin ridges and explain how a simple design helped fight fraud centuries ago.

Ridged edges were adopted in 17th-century England to combat coin clipping, in which criminals shaved precious metal from the smooth edges of gold and silver coins and continued spending them at face value.

Using a knife or file, they shaved tiny slivers from the smooth edges of coins. Each coin looked almost unchanged, so it could still be spent at its full value, while the stolen silver or gold was collected and melted down. As more and more coins were clipped, people began losing confidence in the currency.

Sir Isaac Newton, warden of The Royal Mint, helped restore public trust through the Great Recoinage of 1696.

These newer coins featured precisely milled edges with tiny grooves known as reeding. While ridged edges had appeared on some coins before Newton’s time, machine production made them far more consistent and difficult to tamper with. If someone tried shaving metal from one of these coins, the missing ridges would immediately reveal that it had been altered.

David Loop of Sierra Pacific Furbabies rescued a feral cat who had spent five days with his head stuck in a jar and was unable to eat or drink. Loop eventually caught the cat, whom he appropriately named the cat Jarhead, and took him to a veterinarian, who removed the jar.

By the time David showed up to try and rescue this feral cat, he had already been stuck with a jar on his head for 5 days. And while cats can go some days without food, water is essential to their survival. … After the whole neighborhood was on the lookout for this cat, David and his team were finally able to net him and trap him.

After the jar was removed, Jarhead took time to recover and learn to trust Loop and other humans.

After some much needed decompression and using lots of positive reinforcement and some tools, David began the journey to getting Jarhead to trust him. Did it come with some spiciness? Of course. But at the end of the day, it was incredibly worth it.

Max Miller of Tasting History investigated the historical evolution of the piña colada, contrasting the modern, creamy Puerto Rican version with an older style inspired by earlier Cuban versions.

Do you like piña coladas? Do you  like getting caught in the rain? Well, if you answered yes to the first one at least,  then I got to ask, which version of the piña colada do you prefer? Is it the creamy version made popular in 1950s Puerto Rico,  or is it the original version, which may have its root in the bars of Cuba? Well, I’m going to make both.

By recreating both recipes, Miller explored the drink’s complex past, including earlier Cuban versions and competing Puerto Rican claims to the modern cocktail, as well as the differences and similarities between the two.

The piña colada I expect when I order one is the modern, sweet, and creamy piña colada. But the original cocktail recipe is altogether quite different. There are similarities; it uses rum, but instead of the sweet, creamy coconut cream, it uses the much less sweet coconut milk.

Award-winning puppet designer Oliver Hymans, Associate Director of the Little Angel Theatre in London, spoke about bringing life to inanimate objects while seeking to breathe new life into the endangered craft of marionette making.

Oliver is trained in marionette puppetry making, an ancient art form that was added to the Heritage Crafts Red List of Endangered Crafts in 2023 due to a shortage of people learning how to make marionette string puppets. Oliver is passionate about passing the skill of marionette puppetry down through the generations to keep it alive.

Hymans sketched, carved, assembled, and strung a traditional wooden marionette, explaining how gravity and a carefully balanced design work together to give the character such expressive movement. He also shared how he keeps learning and experimenting.

Oliver discusses puppet making materials, character building and how much he learnt from watching YouTube video tutorials and by experimenting with materials.

Blackwing showcased the meticulous craftsmanship behind their iconic hexagonal pencils, beginning with the precise blending of graphite and clay in Kofu, Japan, where the graphite is extruded, fired at high heat, and treated with wax. The graphite is then sent to Tokyo, where the pencils are assembled, shaped, lacquered, and imprinted, before being sent to Stockton, California, where their signature ferrules and erasers are attached.

This film outlines each stage of production, including how our premium graphite is pressed and cut, how multiple layers of lacquer are hand-applied to achieve our signature smooth finish, and finally how each pencil is tipped, imprinted, and hand-packed for sale.

Researchers at Université de Sherbrooke’s Createk Design Lab in Quebec, Canada, equipped their Ice Dart drone with passively retractable spines inspired by cat claws, dissipative landing gear, and reverse thrust. They put the drone through field trials in Iceland, where it completed 24 successful landings on icebergs and glacier ice at slopes up to 58°.

We demonstrate a new landing technology comprised of custom, lightweight disk brakes, rapid thrust reversal at impact and bio-inspired retractable spines in the feet to enable drones to safely land on ice slopes inclined at up to 60°.

This breakthrough opens the door to reliable drone landings and operations in real-world icy conditions.
