French ballerina Victoria Dauberville bravely stepped out onto the rather bulbous bow of a ship traveling through the Antarctic Ocean and performed a beautiful dance en pointe. Despite the cold weather and the incoming ice floes, Dauberville remained incredibly calm and graceful. Dauberville and her choreographer husband, Mathieu Forget, spoke with the CBC program The National about this incredible feat.

The insightful animated video series Kurzgesagt recounted the tenets of “Project Plowshare”, a rather frightening United States government program that began in 1957 and planned to use nuclear bombs for excavation purposes in the name of progress.

In the 1960s, the US planned to nuke Israel with hundreds of thermonuclear bombs. And Panama. And Alaska. All in the name of progress, driven by a mad scientist, to use the most destructive use of weapons to build things. This was Project Plowshare.

Project Plowshares was formed at the beginning of the Cold War with the purpose of using nukes to save money and time on such projects as digging canals, creating new waterways, and breaking up land. After several test failures, however, Project Plowshares was discontinued in 1977.

Project Plowshare was a bold attempt to use atomic explosions for more practical purposes: from digging canals and creating harbors to reshaping entire landscapes. This project was designed to push the limits of what seemed possible, but instead turned into an environmental disaster.

In a courtroom, these semantic disagreements can have life or death consequences. How a single word or punctuation mark is interpreted can mean the difference between freedom or life in prison.

Brozovsky also explores the concept of textualism, a widely used theory that focuses on the plain meaning of a legal text, without considering context, intention, or the problem it initially sought to remedy.

According to Textualism, a judge should never consider any information outside the literal wording of a statute. Even if you happen to know exactly what the legislators had in mind when they wrote a bill, if they didn’t express it clearly, it doesn’t matter. In this philosophy, the law is the words on the page, nothing more, nothing less.

Dr. Amit Patel, who is blind, shared remarkable footage of his highly intelligent guide dog Quark, who did not allow him to cross a London street despite there being no oncoming traffic. It turns out, as a passerby confirmed, there was a van blocking the other side of the pedestrian crosswalk, and Quark was taught to ensure the crossings were clear before proceeding.

Quark wasn’t being stubborn. He was doing his job. …A passer by came over and confirmed that a vehicle was blocking the zebra crossing. I didn’t want Quark to learn that it’s ok to cross over when there’s vehicles blocking the way, so I held my nerve and waited.

When they tried to cross the street again, a different vehicle blocked the other end of the crosswalk, and Quark stopped once again. Patel directed the dog back to the sidewalk, and soon they crossed the street safely.

When the vehicle moved, he checked the space again and started to cross only to find his path blocked, again. We went back to the kerb and waited until it was safe to cross.

This is why I trust Quark with my life.

A senior orange tabby named Winston, who had been living on the streets for years, showed up at Murphy Beyer’s home with a swollen ear, seemingly asking for help to live out his final days without pain. Beyer, who already lived with two other cats, readily took him in and was instantly enamored with him.

I immediately told my partner, “You have to come outside. There’s a cat.” And we had been talking about how we couldn’t handle getting another cat. But as soon as I saw him, there was not even a tiny doubt in my mind that we weren’t going to keep him. … why I think he came to us was that he was tired of being in pain and he knew that we would help him.

Beyer and her partner immediately took Winston to the veterinarian to get his swollen, infected ear removed. They also eventually learned that Winston had squamous cell carcinoma, a fatal disease. Despite his diagnosis, Winston was a really happy and social cat who happily lived out his final days with humans who loved him.

We were told there is no way to cure it. Our vet got him a stroller, and we would take him outside multiple times a day, and we would take him all over our town and our city. He was such a light to every person that met him and was so attached to all of them, no matter what. I have never met an animal that I loved more than him. truly like I adore animals, but I have never experienced that level of connection and love with an animal.

Sadly, Winston passed away on May 3, 2026.

He passed away the evening of May 3rd. Even though my time with him was super short, I don’t I will never know another cat like him and I will never ever ever forget him.

Bathrooms are an absolute gold mine of British and American differences. …I finally answer the question ‘why are American toilets so different to British ones?’

Brown also examined regional variations in bathtub installations, faucet configurations, and electrical safety standards that distinguish homes in the United Kingdom from those in the United States.

I’ll be honest, during my first few weeks in the country, I missed the toilets of Britain. Even the ones where you have to pay. Nothing about American toilets endeared me to them whatsoever.…I started seeing American toilets in a new light, a light that could be summoned by a switch on the inside. For clarification, electrical safety regulations prevent this in the UK, where either the switch is mounted outside the room or the light is operated by a non-conductive pull cord.

After weighing the pros and cons of each country’s loo, Brown finally came to a decision.

Listen, both countries have put forward a strong case. British toilets have a lovable sense of character, and American toilets have lots of character, but make no sense. But there can only be one winner. Do I pick the toilets that barely ever get blocked? …Or do I go with the toilets that are more odor friendly that require just 18 minutes of door closure? Well, I thought long and hard about this, and it might be because America is my current home, but I’d have to give the nod to American toilets,

In a humorous episode of his True Facts series, narrator Ze Frank explores the architectural marvels of honeybees, noting how they build mathematically perfect hexagons in their hives.

These sheets of honeycomb are used to raise babies and to store honey and pollen. And this comb is made from a series of hexagonal cells. And this shape, the hexagon, turns out to be quite special.

He also examines the evolutionary history of social insects and their use of collective labor to build their geometrically complex hives.

But how do they know how to do it? Do they have some idea of what it should look like? I mean, even a simple structure like this, let alone when thousands of them are collaborating on a nest. I mean, you know, statistically there’s got to be a few idiots in there. Well, for this, it’s helpful to go over a concept called stigma….the idea that a signal in the environment triggers some sort of behavioral response in the animal.

The educational channel Pointe of View spoke with biologists Dr. Abby Drake of Cornell University and Dr. Jonathan Losos of Washington University to learn more about their fascinating study that showed how selective breeding led to striking similarities between brachycephalic dogs and short-nosed cats. A convergent evolution without intention.

Their key finding, …is that the skull of a Persian cat is now measurably more similar to the skull of a pug than it is to its own ancestor the African wildcat. The pug, meanwhile, has drifted further from the wolf than toward it. Two species. Fifty million years of separation. One face. This is called convergent evolution…

Through painstaking examination, the pair learned that the skulls of a Pug and a Persian cat are essentially identical, except for one tiny difference.

Dogs and cats have essentially converged. They are skull-wise 95% identical. They are separated at this point mostly by one bone and a different set of teeth. 

They attribute these common traits to those of human babies, specifically the cuteness that ensured care.

The reason, it turns out, comes down to babies, specifically, our ancient, hardwired inability to resist a baby face. Big eyes. Tiny nose. Round cheeks. Evolution spent millions of years making sure we’d find that combination irresistible, so we’d take care of our helpless infants. Then breeders spent two hundred years accidentally applying that same instinct to dogs and cats. The result is a pug. And a Persian. And the uncanny, slightly unsettling fact that they are now, in various ways, basically the same animal.

All I have to do is put the skateboard down and he knows what to do. He just has a complete command of the skateboard. He’s pretty intense.

Paleontologist Danielle Dufault of Animalogic explored the diverse ecosystems of unique sea creatures living within the five layers of the Mariana Trench, the deepest in the world.

In the Mariana Trench, the ocean floor splits open into the deepest scar on Earth.  From the surface, it looks like your classic tropical blue water, but this 11-kilometre descent into pressurized cold darkness creates creatures so strange they feel like they evolved on another planet.

This visual exploration of the sunlight zone, twilight zone, midnight zone, and far beyond revealed the unique biological and chemical adaptations, such as bioluminescence, that enable these animals to survive extreme cold, crushing pressure, and perpetual darkness.
