Finnish five-man band Steve ‘n’ Seagulls performed a hearty, up-tempo bluegrass version of the classic 1979 earworm “My Sharona” by The Knack while seemingly at a ski lodge and in between fooling around on the slopes. It’s a bit reminiscent of “Weird Al” Yankovic‘s classic parody “My Bologna”.

Original song by The Knack played with modern sounds aka banjo, mandolin, double bass, etc.

Josh DeWall of Ignite Glass Studios in Chicago has created an absolutely gorgeous, hand-blown glass wine decanter in the shape of an octopus. The wine is poured through the cephalopod’s head and travels down its eight graceful arms aerate the wine on its way into a rounded receptacle at the bottom.

According to DeWall, the decanter holds one bottle of wine and is very easy to clean.

Borosilicate octopus decanter – holds one bottle of wine. Made to order. …Soap and water. And if it requires more- denatured alcohol and of course salt will do the trick.

The Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development team is developing a very short but freely mobile robot that can play the part of small characters in films. According to Disney, the robotic actor can walk, gesture, and emote according to whatever is needed at the time. Their first prototype is a really adorable Baby Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy.

Using custom authoring tools that combine whole-body motion planning and traditional character animation, artists can quickly bring robotic characters to life with expressive motions and interactive behaviors. There are no immediate plans for use in Disney theme parks; however, a prototype in the form of Groot is being used to test unique traits, gaits, and capabilities.

Cody Don Reeder of Cody’s Lab, who previously flushed a toilet using 240 lbs of mercury instead of water, deliberately inhaled two different chemicals from separate balloons with amusing results. While it’s rather common for people to do this with helium balloons to make their voices higher, these actually made his voice lower. Reeder first inhaled sulfur hexafluoride (deep voice gas) and laughed about it. He then inhaled the even denser perfluorobutane. This one was harder to clear from his lungs

I breathe in samples of sulfur hexafluoride and perfluorobutane which has nearly twice the density. I plan to do a longer more detailed video eventually.

Volunteer firefighters with the Devils Peak Vredehoek Neighbourhood Watch took a moment out from their hard work fighting fires in Cape Town, South Africa to give a very parched tortoise a long drink from the cap of a bottle of water.

These firefighters manage to give a turtle a drink of water due to the Cape Town fire in April of 2021.

The devastating fires started on April 18, 2021, near Devils Peak in Table Mountain Park. Sadly the large animal population of the area has been profoundly affected. Belinda Abraham, the spokesperson for Cape Hope SPCA told The South African that the signs are ominous but she still remains hopeful.

In the aftermath of the fire, we are now seeing the first signs of life and loss. Searching the areas for any form of life has become heartbreakingly traumatic as the charred remains of the several different species we come across tell the story of immense suffering. Overcome by smoke then turned to charcoal. Those that survived, give us hope.

British comedians Jay Foreman (previously) and Mark Cooper-Jones of Map Men humorously dug into the origins of the word “America”, how the word came about, how early maps portrayed America, how the it became synonymous with the United States, and why many around the world take issue with the use of that word to describe only the US.

So how come America got to name itself America? You’d think that writing the Latin word “America” on Latin America would mean America should describe Latin America….In 1776, the 13 colonies that had been known as British America used their rifles to shotgun the name “The United States of America”. Over time, the long name “The United States of America” got shortened to just “America” which is how the English-speaking world almost exclusively refers to the United States today. And, as you might expect, or if you’re an American, as you might never have given any thought to this annoys a lot of people.

A pair of curious goats named Alex and Junior who live at Tammy’s Oberlin Hobby Farm in Oberlin, Ohio, stood upon a seesaw and tried to figure out what it was and what it did. The hircine pair walked back and forth until they got a reaction. The movement proved to be too much for Junior, but Alex remained and figured out how to rock himself back and forth upon the treaded plank. This entire scenario proved highly amusing to their human Tammy Tunison.

Alex taught himself how to teeter-totter. I think Alex knows he is entertaining me. The more I laugh the more he does it. …He tried to get it to move but he couldn’t because Junior’s was on the other end Alex teetered and tattered for about 45 minutes. When he was done, he decided making it balance would be fun.

Alex decided that he wanted to get in a bit more practice, much to Tunison’s delight.

The Genesis Museum has taken classic 16mm film footage from a 1973 Genesis concert and remastered it to 4K high definition. They also used an AI tool to reduce noise and to fill in video gaps where the image was blurry or missing.

This was a really big project. Not that the source was bad, the source was actually very nice. However, the source had many anomalies, but enough “clay” was there to mold this into something even better. …I then remastered the rest of the audio to give it a bit more life, some compression and reverb and stereo effects, though not too much as this is a small club and would be strange if it sounded like Giants Stadium.

The show took place on January 10, 1973, at the Bataclan Theatre in Paris, France. The band was touring their Genesis Live album and the band, at the time, consisted of Peter Gabriel on vocals, Phil Collins on drums, Steve Hackett on guitar, Michael Rutherford on bass, and Tony Banks on keyboards.

Matt Mikka of Warped Perception (previously) put both a GoPro and a dive case enclosed Insta360 camera inside a brand new dishwasher in order to capture what happens behind the closed door. Mikka filmed the entire cycle, which included the release of the soap at around the six-minute mark.

For those of you who are curious about the inside of the dishwasher and how a dishwasher works inside and does its job then this video is for you. Mostly I was really curious about how the dish soap gets dispensed which I haven’t ever seen on video before.

The post How Subtitles Become Useless When a Character Starts Speaking an Made Up Alien Language first appeared on Laughing Squid.

In a towering Ted Ed video essay written by Alex Gendler (previously) and animated by Wow How Studios, narrator Addison Anderson explains the revolutionary architectural design behind the construction of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The building stands at an incredible 828 meters (2,716.54 feet) high and considered the tallest skyscraper in the world.

For early skyscraper design, architect Fazlur Rahman Khan came up with the idea to swap out the building’s internal support for an exoskeleton made of steel and concrete. This would not only make the building lighter but also reduce building sway. Khan called this method “Tubular Design”. In 2004, architects from the late Khan’s firm designed this incredible landmark by taking Khan’s ideas even further.

This building took Khan’s exoskeleton design one step further, with a central column supported by three protruding wings. Each wing’s weight carries the other two, while the heavy concrete core acts as a support beam, that also houses the building’s elevators and mechanical infrastructure. This design, called the buttressed core, allowed the entire structure to work as a single load-bearing unit, supporting the building’s 73 stories.

After an injection, the ever-comical Jack Black hilariously transformed himself into his own version of Captain America. Black, who was dressed in a mask and a rather skimpy American flag bathing suit, happily flung his shield while unselfconsciously preening and knocking down stuff around his yard.

Black also transformed into Hulk, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Thor catching Mjölnir (Thor’s hammer).

French comedian Loïc Suberville quite amusingly made fun of his native language, taking the absurd English sentence “A green worm pours a glass towards a glassmaker around 8 PM” and translated it into French. The resulting phrase is very alliterative, assonant, and repetitive “Un ver vert verse un Verre vers un Verrier vers Vingt Heures”.

For those not familiar with the French language, the pronunciation of most of the words in this odd phrase sounds exactly the same. Suberville has been continuing the series with a few more examples.

A colony of playful Galapagos sea lions upon a Santa Cruz Island barge that they hijacked for their own, hilariously engaged in what sounded like a rather raucous burping contest. As it turns out, the distinctive noise is just juvenile pups sounding off to one another.

The young sea lions are much smaller and much more playful than the adults. The constant calling and grunting of the sea lions fill the air and when we listen, we can’t help but be reminded of high school burping contests.

A very focused Australian shepherd named Roo stared directly at her human and licked her nose whenever she heard the squeak of her favorite squeaky toy, as if the noise was a switch that activated her little pink tongue. According to her human, this trick was never taught.
