Interested in building the next generation of toys on digital devices such as the iPad?
At Launchpad Toys, we’re building digital toys and tools that empower kids to create, learn, and share their ideas through play. Our first app, Toontastic, is a storytelling and animation tool that enables kids ages 5-10 to draw and animate their own cartoons and share them online with friends and family around the world. Toontastic was just honored as one of the “Top 10 iPad Apps of 2011” by the New York Times and was recently added to the iTunes Hall of Fame.

As we build new creativity tools for kids and grow our online storytelling community (Toontastic added more users than Netflix Streaming last month), we’re looking to bring on a veteran marketer to guide our social media efforts, launch creative promotions, build distribution partnerships, and direct our parent communications. Our ideal candidate has 5-15 years experience in toy/game/media marketing, a strong analytical mind with the chops to execute ideas independently, and a finger on the pulse of parents and educators around the world. She or he is well versed in reading/coding web analytics, driving “freemium” conversion, creating whimsically playful viral videos… and building awesome LEGO spaceships.

We’re open to alternative work schedules and part-time candidates. Our SOMA SF office is a one block walk from BART. Sound like you? Please check out our jobs page, email us at howdy@launchpadtoys.com, and be prepared to present/defend a dissertation on your favorite ice cream flavor.

We’re very excited to announce today the release of Toontastic v1.6: Make History YOUR Story! In honor of President’s Day and Black History Month here in the US, we’ve created three new playsets honoring landmark milestones in human rights: “The Dream”, “The Vote”, and “The Signing”. With these playsets, kids can retell the stories of these seminal moments using characters like George Washington, Martin Luther King Jr., and Susan B. Anthony in settings like Independence Hall and the Lincoln Memorial. Hip Hooray for History!

Thanks to popular demand, we’ve extended our “Birthday Bonus” one more month: for just $9.99 you can unlock EVERY CURRENT AND FUTURE PLAYSET in our Toy Store – over $34 savings! (pssst, teachers: it works for classrooms too!)

Above all, the crew here at Launchpad Toys would like to take a moment to say thank you for your support of Toontastic and playful storytellers around the world. Your kids’ remarkable creativity and humor make every day feel like Saturday Morning Cartoons!

-Your Friends at Launchpad Toys

People don’t often associate Science with Storytelling, but that didn’t stop the Adaptations classroom from creating a whole slew of insightful and imaginative Science Reports up on ToonTube this week – an exciting development for the science-loving space-junky crew here at Launchpad Toys.

If you’re interested in a quick primer, you should check out the collection. Each of the stories presents its own scientific methodology for demonstration… though we must admit to being suckers for the Demolition Derby in Scene 3 of this particular ‘Toon.

One year ago today, we launched our beloved Toontastic into the App Store to see if kids might be interested in creating and sharing cartoons using the iPad. Fast forward 365 days: hypothesis CONFIRMED!

Over the past year, kids and kids-at-heart have played for a cumulative 28 years, creating over 600,000 cartoons in 100+ countries around the world.

To celebrate, we’ve launched a “Birthday Bonus” for the in-app Toy Store enabling users to purchase all current and future playsets for one flat price of $9.99… and we can’t wait to see all the absurdly creative stories y’all imagine with a Toy Box chock full of lions, tigers… and nefarious space villains.

Above all, we wanted to take a moment to say THANK YOU to all the kids and parents out there who have made our dreams come true. Your creativity, humor, talent… and love for Angry Birds parody inspire us every.single.day.

Our friends at Latitude Research and Project Synthesis just partnered with the LEGO Learning Institute (let’s be friends too!) to produce a great report on three of our favorite topics: kids, storytelling, and ROBOTS!

With this study, the team asked a group of elementary school students to tell a story about what life would be like with their own robot. The research team then coded the stories to see what commonalities existed across stories and learn more about how robots might help to encourage play, learning, and creativity. Without spoiling too much of the report, we were particularly interested to hear that (unlike many adults), the kids tended to talk about their robots as friends and mentors rather than tools – a sibling or cousin with just a bit more knowledge/experience (but, as Vygotsky would note, still well within the ZPD).

It’s a great read for anyone interested in qualitative research, education, play, sentient beings… you know all the cool things in life. Here’s the Full Report.

It’s not often that we see cartoons so expertly scripted, drawn, and acted… captivating the Launchpad Crew with a harrowing journey through the Bermuda Triangle. Well done Ggg, well done.
The following article was written in partnership with Dan Donahoo of Wired’s GeekDad.com and appears in the Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop’s iLearn Report, released 1/12/12.

Today’s mobile platforms enable developers to create more engaging and empowering content than ever before – groundbreaking games, toys, and tools for kids to play, learn, grow, and develop. In order to achieve the great potential of this market, however, it’s time for parents, educators, and developers to collectively reassess our pricing model: an expected price point of $.99 is not sustainable.

A “Top 50” Education app might have 100-200 downloads a day. Through regular updates, good social media support, and a strong fan base, a great app might hope to stay in the Top 50 for six months to a year. At $.99, that translates to $12K-$50K in revenue (revenue after 30% platform margin). With annual development/support costs ranging from $20K-$200K+, we’re quickly approaching a critical juncture in children’s media. We can (a) increase revenue, (b) consolidate, (c) reduce quality/depth/cost, or (d) supplement income through advertising and commercial branding.

If parents, educators, and developers truly value high-quality commercial-free educational content, then we must work together to identify and embrace a new pricing model that will sustain a diversity of developers to build innovative and creative content for our children. The simple answer would be to raise prices, but that’s shortsighted as upfront fees can inhibit parents from taking chances on original content and lead to more traditional licensing and advertising-driven markets like those of the toy and video game industries.

The ideal market would be a content meritocracy where apps are valued for engagement, fun, and learning over packaging, licensing, and advertising. One way to achieve this is to shift the “point-of-purchase” to inside the app, creating what is effectively a free/low-‐cost trial for parents and educators. In-app-purchase (IAP) has received a bad rap in children’s media due largely to the irresponsible practices of certain developers selling “Pay-to-Play” consumables as if the tablet were a quarter-gobbling arcade machine. This not only exploits and commercializes play, but can also lead to astronomical “gotcha” charges reminiscent of the early days of teenage texting.

IAP subscriptions and “Content Expansion Packs” (add-on levels, stories, songs, etc.) offer a great alternative. Parents and educators can purchase apps at a nominal fee, evaluate them, and then (if worthy) invest further to expand the play experience much like they might buy a new LEGO playset. This encourages parents and educators to take a chance on unknown brands and test unique and innovative products-great for developers, the market, and ultimately kids. It also incentivizes developers to release regular updates and Jixes to improve the user experience over time. With this in mind, we’ve outlined best practices for all parties to embrace this new model and foster a dynamic, purposeful, and sustainable world of mobile media for our children.

Parents/Educators: Commit to Supporting Excellence and Diversity in Children’s Media

1. Invest in subscriptions and expansion packs for your favorite apps to expand the play experience

2. Look beyond the “Top 10” to find innovative and unknown content on mommy blogs and app review sites

3. Promote great content by writing reviews, sharing apps with friends, and posting comments via social
media

4. Write to developers to offer feedback and suggestions for future apps/updates

Developers: Respect the Sanctity of Childhood and Play

5. Price apps accessibly for parents/educators to easily evaluate

6. Offer high-value expansion packs that expand the play experience instead of “pay to play” consumables

7. Do not disguise costs or manipulate children’s emotions to entice spending

8. Strive for continuous improvement: Engage educators and child development experts, test your app
regularly with kids throughout development, and commit to continuously improving your apps over their lifetimes

By adopting these practices, we lay the groundwork not just for a sustainable children’s media market, but for a new generation of games, toys, and tools with unprecedented potential to empower kids to play, learn, laugh, create, grow, and explore – both indoors and outdoors, in school and at home, independently and collaboratively with friends, educators, and family. Digital play spaces should inspire and enable children to do what they do best: be children… with touchscreens at their fingertips and mud between their toes. For the first time in history, we have the tools to actually realize this potential; all that’s left is to fund it.

We’ve heard a number of reports that the v1.50 update is causing a crash for users installing the app over an old build (though not for new users). We’re sorry for any frustration this has caused and our crack team of code-gumshoes is hard at work sleuthing out the problem.

In the meantime, PLEASE DO NOT UNINSTALL TOONTASTIC to install a fresh version as this will erase your kids’ cartoons and we certainly want to retain those great memories. We’ll have a fix out for this shortly. Thank you for your patience and, again, please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience.

To close out the year, Toontastic has racked up quite a number of “Best of 2011″ honors from Apple, AppTudes, and today The New York Times.

We LOVE to share stories of teachers using Toontastic in the classroom. (Seriously! email us anytime if you’d like to share your story!) Today’s guest contribution is written by Michael Berry, Principal at Richmond Elementary in Richmond, Vermont.

I use my iPad, like other administrators, to make certain parts of my job and day more efficient and mobile. I take notes on it, pictures, video, send emails, upload blog posts, tweet, etc. You get the idea. I do occasionally check out classroom apps to see if they are worth anything or something that I might pass on to others, but it was only last night and today that I purposely identified a very tangible and real area of use that I wasn’t tapping into. Storytelling.

As a principal I try to connect with students whenever I can. I have regular check in’s with students as well as the time that I spend in classrooms, on the playground and in the lunch room. I haven’t used my iPad as a tool during these quieter times with students…until today!

You see, every night when I put my daughter to bed, we read a book on my iPad (Winnie the Pooh this week) and then explore an app or two. Last night we tried Toontastic… and I was sincerely impressed!

Now, back to school. So I have a student that I’m meeting with today and we’re having a hard time getting to what’s going on inside that young mind. Suddenly, on a whim, I pull out the iPad and ask them if they would like to tell a story with me. We started up the Toontastic app and started a new story. It took me a grand total of two minutes to figure out the story we were creating was all about the problem that this student was in my office to discuss. We worked through all the areas of the story and we were able to have a very meaningful conversation about the resolution…so meaningful that I’m not sure we would have gotten there any other way.

It served as a powerful reminder to me that there are many ways to have meaningful moments with our students and that we shouldn’t be afraid to try some new ideas and allow the story to unfold.

Moment of Truth: have ZERO idea what “Resan Med Balongen Och Glassen“ is about other than what Google Translate can tell us about the title (Journey with the Balloon and Ice Cream)… but if you know the crew here at Launchpad Toys, you know that any mention of Ice Cream – especially when paired with some pretty sweet illustration – is a fair bet to make the Weekly Top ‘Toon.

Nice work Gerda on this really nicely drawn, dynamically animated, and expertly narrated cartoon of a journey to the dojo… and apparently the Jurassic period. Bravo!

UPDATE: Our friends from TocaBoca were kind enough to provide a translation:

“It’s called “The Journey with the balloon and the ice cream” and starts on a soccer field, but the ballons flies away and the two end up in a karate hall instead. There they decide to learn some karate after warming up. The Ice Cream thinks it is difficult to punch since he/she doesn’t have any hands… The balloon then proceeds to fly away even further and ends up in dinosaur times and the ice cream gets slightly eaten and slurped by one particularly hungry dinosaur. Finally the two end up back on the soccer field and the balloon is tied ten times to the goal post. The balloon finally scores in front of the new japanese flag, and wins the game.”

With the holidays in full swing and stores brimming with crazed parents scrambling to pickup the hottest toys, we thought we’d take a break from the Mall Madness and Plastic Pandemonium to propose a saner, greener, cheaper, and uniqu(er) alternative: a Digital Toy Box. Sure, mobile phones and tablets are great for digital games like Pac-Man and Angry Birds, but with their large touchscreens, microphones, and GPS sensors they’re also quickly becoming amazing platforms for digital TOYS.

With this in mind, GeekDad’s Daniel Donahoo and Launchpad Toy’s Andy Russell have put together the following Top 10 list of our favorite apps for open-ended, creative, constructive, and exploratory play – not just substitutes for plastic toys, but tools that empower kids to create, learn, and share through play.

So have at it, parents! Drop those car keys, put away the wrapping paper, and build your kids a Digital Toy Box!

A Digital One-Man-Band: Isle of Tune

Drums and triangles giving you a headache? Try this wonderful beat sequencer that enables kids to create and share their own songs through a whimsical and playful interface that (bonus!) teaches them a bit about rhythm, tempo, and tone along the way!

Digital Marble Play: Marble Mixer

For those of us who always struggled to position the marble just so in your index finger before flicking it into the circle, you can now introduce your kids to the grand old schoolyard game of marbles. This is an addictive game of marbles for up to four players. It encourages group gameplay around your mobile device and tests those fine motor skills as you have to weight the marble just right to get maximum points.

(the rest after the break)

A Digital Puppet Theater: Toontastic

Of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t include Launchpad Toys’ own app, Toontastic, on this list. Just like dolls, puppets, and action figures, Toontastic makes it easy to create your own stories through play – EXCEPT now you can actually record your stories as animated cartoons complete with narration and share them online via ToonTube! Ok, we’ll stop now… but check it out yourself (it’s free) – you’ll be amazed at what kids have created and shared.

A Digital Coloring Book: Kidoodle Pirate

This sophisticatedly simple electronic coloring book offers great story starters and then actually brings your drawings to life by animating them as part of mini-scene cartoons. Beautifully designed, intuitive, and lots of FUN – perfect for the young storyteller/illustrator in all of us.

A Digital Workbench: Casey’s Contraptions

Second only to Grandpa’s Workshop, this confoundingly addictive physics puzzler challenges kids to invent and solve their own Rube Goldberg machines using stuff they’d find around the house like tennis balls and tin cans. Great for any budding inventor/engineer!

A Digital Butterfly Net: Project Noah

Sick of your kids being sucked into digital screens? Want to get them outdoors, running around, and exploring nature? Project Noah is a brilliant photo-sharing platform for “citizen scientists” to photograph plants and animals all around us, engage in exploration “missions,” and discuss their findings with other nature enthusiasts around the globe.

A Digital Slot-Car Track: Dream Track Nation

Be it Hot Wheels, Slot-Cars, or Carrera Racers, boys (and many girls) around the world LOVE building and driving their own race tracks. Dream Track Nation makes that easier than ever and even lets you share tracks with friends once you’re done. Brilliant!

A Digital Beauty Shop: Toca Hair Salon

Ok, time to fess up. Who amongst us DIDN’T play barber at one time or another to a doll, pet… or sibling (cough, sputter, wheeze). Toca Hair Salon is just that – a whimsically fun hair styling toy for kids to cut, color, and blow-dry the hair of funny creatures and characters – all without scissors! A terrific app for social play (Toca Boca has also just released Toca Kitchen for roleplaying cooking on your iOS device).

A Digital Board Game: Pictureka

Touchscreens have turned Pictureka into a zoom in, zoom out race against the clock which tests children’s visual and observational skills as they try to find items amid the many images on the screen. This is a game that translates so well to mobile devices and engages children in play that involves memory and recognition.

A Digital Foosball Table: RAMPage

Another game for more than one player, children can use their tablet to challenge each other to foosball where the spinning footballers are replaced by marbles shot from behind the net to try to score goals. It is fast, dynamic and is another screen-based game encouraging the development of social skills through multiplayer game play.

There is so much more on offer than simply first person shooters and level-based puzzle games. What other toys would you add to your digital toy box? Let us know in the comments.

Ok, enough high-fiving already – now get back to work on those ‘toons!

Continuing with this week’s theme of mass-media inspired storytelling, this week’s Top ‘Toon is an homage to (yup, I’m going to say it), the best of the Galactic Trilogy: Empire. From the dark swamps of Dagobah to Cloud City amputation (shield your eyes!), Captainjack covers it all. Well done young Jedi, well done.
