You know that feeling you had in high school when you met a boy, developed a crush and proceeded to obsess from afar for years? That was me with this sweater. I styled the lovely Erica Milde in it for our Imagined Girl editorial this fall and I just haven’t been able to get it out of my head. Fast forward to a visit with TwentyThirtyForty’s Brandon Frein and Arlene Matthews at their studio yesterday and finally, she became mine. The better news is, she can be yours too! A little birdie told me (by which I mean, I saw them) there are but a few of these stunning La Perle knit sweaters by french brand Surface to Air left. Go on, grab one for yourself. Just don’t make fun of me for wearing mine every day for the rest of winter.

Day two in New York was an explosion of color. I kicked things off with Ohne Titel at Milk Studios where Flora Gil and Alexa Adams showed bold knits and the graphic colors that have become their calling card. I was intrigued by molded helmets and sculpted hair that accented the feminine shapes they so consistently create.

After a lunch on the High Line, I took a trip under the sea with Karen Walker. Her poppy, exciting prints and metallic brocade coats were perfect compliments to the sunny disposition of her giggly models. I loved seeing updated looks at oversized coats and dresses and it was fun to see a more optimistic take on winter.

Alice + Olivia introduced long and glamorous gowns into their already bright repertoire. The amazing presentation featured so many covetable looks including some ball gowns fit for a funky gossip girl in training!

Being from the desert, I’m admittedly mediocre at dealing with the cold. There is, however, something I like about fashion and the bitter cold in New York. It’s a bit quieter, certainly cozier and it moves with more efficiently to keep people out of the elements. Yesterday started early- leaving Chicago before it was even light out or over 15 degrees. I showed up to Jeremy Laing’s show with vintage valise and red hard shell suitcase in tow. My boxy luggage almost felt like the perfect accessory for Laing’s newest collection. All columns of silk under square jackets and over rectangular leather skirts, the collection felt both precise and romantic. Restrained but a bit wild at the same time. I was fascinated by the split backs and sleeves of the heavy overcoats and jackets that provided an escape hatch from otherwise contained spaces.

After the show, I caught up with Brandon Frein from Twenty Thirty Forty and Kit This for coffee. We were thrilled to realize that the print on her pants matched her quiche plate perfectly!

It was refreshing to see a young gun like Mathieu Mirano showing at Lincoln center. While there’s certainly room to grow in his first collection, the twenty year old has planted sophisticated seeds for his own design future. McQueen inspired embroidery and embelishment definitely stood out, but Mirano was at his best when atempting simple silhouettes with unique textiles. I’m convinced that when this young artist begins his next collection, he should start with the shimmering column gown in deep navy that he showed last night. It’s simplicity was arrestingly beautiful and I definitely wanted more.

The day ended with some writer bonding time with Tres Awesome’s Emma Arnold. We joined Chicago Street Style’s Amy Creyer at The Standard East to see Tavi Gevinson perform in support of her friend Jonah Ansell’s new short film Cadaver. Her cover of Neil Diamond’s Heart of Gold was the perfect compliment to the whimsical evening and perhaps the season as a whole. Dying to relive the moment? You can hear the song over on our Tumblr

This winter gave the LaundryMagazine team the opportunity to work with Chicago photographer Thomas Slack. This shoot, which took place at the Evanston Art Center, was an experiment in layers and weight, the balance between earthy and ethereal. Though the editorial itself focused on windblown moments on the dunes, Thomas took Alexa and Michelle of Factor Women on an extensive walk around the grounds- even visiting an un-tended greenhouse. Stylist Samm Mackin of LaundryMagazine selected looks from designers C/Fan, Graeme Bowers, Lisa Rigney, Liz Patelski and a few knit pieces from my own archives with shoes and accessories from Akira.

This shoot had a special additional element- though I was on site, I spent the day speaking with Arlinda Fasliu and Katie Sciemca, who had the opportunity to job shadow and learn about the world of fashion media thanks to Amanda Harmer, the Woodstock School District Career Facilitator.. It was amazing to see such bright and interested young women discovering different opportunities in the industry they had just started to think about. They were great production assistants- ending the day battling gale force winds to reorganize all of the samples and accessories before grabbing coffee to talk about college, social media and everything in between.

You can see the full Horizon Fade editorial here, and outtakes from the shoot on the Laundry.Journal.

Breakout Chinese designer Qiu Hao has the ability to take stark, tangible textiles and advance them to a place of sculpture. This Central Saint Martins graduate began his rise in 2006, showing his collection to applause from Vogue, Elle, WWD and the rest of the haute set. That he showed his collection at the Palais de Tokyo during Couture Fashion Week in 2008 speaks to the handiwork and construction that is found in his layers and shapes. As far as inspiration, Qiu Hao says “Don’t ask me about inspiration…image is a simple way of saying complicated things”. How true it is for his 2011 collection Serpens, which hides so much more than it explains.

I love when designers surprise me- when they take preconceived notions of an identity and mature their lines in a bold and compelling way. This winter, I’ve had the chance to learn more about Tory Burch, first through their runway show for American Express card holders at the Field Museum, next through a special visit to their new Oak Street boutique. I’m prone to dressing in black and grey, carrying classic bags that I could wear with anything and at any time. When I was invited for a day of shopping with the incredible Chicago staff, I dedicated myself to trying something a little different.

I ended up trying the Brooke dress on a whim- purple leopard print? Certainly bold! I fell in love with this chic silhouette and off-beat print. I went back and forth between this adorable Metallic Snakeskin clutch and a more demure saddlebag. Ultimately, I had to go with the sparkly statement piece. I topped everything off with a signature wrap bracelet in black and gold and a chunky cuff that people can’t help by mention (and I rarely take off!)

Many thanks to Tory Burch on Oak Street for inviting me in and dressing me for the holidays! I’ll wear their gifts in good spirit and keep them as a reminder to stay bold and bright in the new year!

(Confession: This is my first outfit post and I was SO nervous! I was photographed by the incredible Kirsten Miccoli, who can take special moments and turn them into gorgeous editorial experiences. Makeup by Vanessa Valliant )

In the past several years the preferred wears of lumberjacks and farmers have infiltrated the greater fashion vernacular in a way we haven’t seen since the mid seventies. This plaid revival isn’t unwarranted though; a flannel shirt can be one of fall and winter’s most practical garments. Originally developed in Wales and made of worsted wool, flannel can be found today made of a variety fabrics such as wool, cotton or synthetic fibers. But just because flannel is your go-to winter staple doesn’t mean you have to wear it the same way over and over again. Here are some ideas to freshen up this old standby.

Wearing a flannel in a timeless red or blue, with dark blue jeans and some Chuck Taylors is as American as apple pie or quietly rioting against the 1%. If all three elements are kept classic, this is a complete and almost perfect ensemble. This brightly colored H&M flannel is made of a soft, brushed cotton to feel easy and relaxed with a big pop of color. The smaller check also makes this shirt feel more modern than anything that would accompany hay baling. Shown here with crisp dark denim that will mold to your body and fade and distress over time and white Chucks to keep things crisp and clean. Chuck Taylors by Converse by John Varvatos. Jeans: model’s own.

Add desert boots and a cozy cardigan or unstructured jacket to take this look to a coffee date or your casual office setting. Jersey fleece blazer by H&M.

One great thing about a flannel is its ability to work as a layering piece It can be worn over a t-shirt for extra warmth in the fall like a sweater. If the weather changes, tie it around your waist like you’re going to a Nirvana concert or over your shoulders prep style. Or better yet, tie it bike messenger style over one shoulder. Halfway between grunge and croquet is a good place to be. Shown here with a white t-shirt from T by Alexander Wang.

A flannel shirt can also be worn in unexpected ways. Take it into evening by putting it under a sport coat and throwing on a tie. The button down collar detail on this shirt lends itself perfectly to a preppy tie. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns. A flannel check is a solid base for any jacket and tie and eccentric mixing just makes you look like Nick Wooster. Shown with a vintage sport coat by Kuppenheimer, vintage Christian Dior tie and sterling silver tie bar by Tiffany & Co.

Before there were Twigs and Raffia, before antlers and an ethereal red-head, before Electroforming and braids that seem to recall a summer camp on Xibalba there were Mirit Weinstock and Alber Elbaz. The former Lanvin intern turned jewelry designer captivates with her delicate and earthy creations that feel two parts Burton for McQueen and one part Tatiana. Before the fragile raffia coated in gold or silver, Weinstock was deconstructing shuttlecocks and making tiny organza pleats. These pieces led her to be picked up by Tel Aviv’s premier showroom for new designers, Sarafan.

As an artist and a person, she’s lived in an amazing life. Born in Haifa, Israel, she spent four years at the Shenkar School of Engineering and Design after being discharged from mandatory service in the army at 21. She paticipated in ITS#ONE in Trieste, Italy where she earned a coveted internship at Alexander McQueen. She proceeded to Maison Lanvin before being selected as a Chosen Artist of the Israeli Cultural Excellence Foundation. Since then, she’s expanded her jewelry line to a ready to wear collection and bridal wear and launched the MISSMI project, which features portraits of women around the world wearing her pieces.
