Here are some things to consider as you decide between landscape rock and wood mulch.

Landscape Rock Pros

While rock and mulch cost approximately the same up front, rock is ultimately cheaper and easier to maintain in the long run. Rock is the perfect decorative companion for shrubs, trees and hearty perennials. Plus, landscape rock is available in many more options than mulch.

However, there are some important draw-backs to consider…

Landscape Rock Cons

Rock weighs much more than mulch, which can cause problems if the ground around your foundation is not properly graded. Under the weight of the rock, the grade can gradually shrink. To prevent water problems, ensure there is a positive grade away from your home.

Second, rock is more permanent than mulch. This means rock is more difficult to manuever if you wish to expand your garden or change the color scheme in the coming years. Also note that the poly fabric or plastic beneath the rock (that helps control weeds) must be replaced every 8 to 10 years.

Top 8 Benefits of Wood Mulch

1. Keeps roots cooler, reducing amount of water needed.
2. Retains water longer.
3. Keeps roots from thawing in the winter, which can lead to plant death and disease.
4. Keeps mower from hitting tree. (Keep mulch at least 2 to 3 inches from the tree trunk, which can rot the bark.)
5. Lighter weight than rock.
6. Biodegradeable.
7. More flexible than rock; expand garden or change mulch color easily.
8. Can be added any time of the year.

We recommend freshening your natural mulch every 1 to 2 years, and color mulch every 2 to 3 years. A 3-inch thick layer of mulch extracts the optimal benefilts.
