Former Conservative MP Rahim Jaffer pleaded guilty to careless driving this week and was sentenced to a $500 fine, while drunk driving and cocaine possession charges were dropped. They say there was “no reasonable possibility of conviction” on those other charges.

If you’re a lawyer, please, help me out with this: How BAD of a prosecutor are you when they find cocaine in the defendant’s car and they can’t convict him on drug possession – THAT IS THE CHARGE!

They found cocaine in his car. Is the defense claiming somebody else put it there? Let me ask you, what is more “REASONABLE”;

A) That the coke belongs to Jaffer, the guy who owns the vehicle,

OR…

B) That a complete stranger broke into his Ford Escape without leaving any visible signs of forced entry and stuffed it full of drugs.

Does that happen a lot? You park downtown and you go to get back in your car only to discover somebody’s broken in and left you a bag of blow on the passenger seat? Maybe I’m just not parking in the right places.

Jaffer paid his $500 fine and as an act of good faith, he also donated $500 to charity… I’m not sure which one, but my guess would be the… Oh My God I Can’t Believe I Got Away With This Foundation.

I’ve been posting a bunch on the SONiC Facebook page and one thing I notice is that for about every 20 or 25 comments we get on any given post, regardless of subject, there’s at least one person who posts: who cares.

Sad about the earthquake in Haiti: who cares
The women’s hockey team is beating Finland: who cares

I understand; there are a lot of things I don’t care about. Beanie babies, James Blunt, Jersey Shore… did I mention James Blunt? Facebook is a social networking site; a tool for connecting with people with similar interests. So to spend your time trolling the internet looking for one more thing NOT to care about… is just sad.

I’m not coming down on people for saying who cares. Like I said, I get one of those for roughly every 20 comments. 5 percent don’t care, and that’s okay. But the sad truth is, if you don’t care, and you’re wasting your time trying to express your apathy to people who do, you’re missing out on the opportunity to connect with OTHER people who don’t care. Start a Who Cares Facebook group – your own personal forum to express your apathy on various subjects.

Yesterday I posted that Noel Gallagher from Oasis was one of the names tossed out as a potential replacement for Simon Cowell on American Idol.

I don’t watch the show, but even with the Olympics on TV, there are 18-million people who DO watch that show. Oasis is certainly not my favorite band, but they’ve sold more than 70-million records and the prospect of Noel becoming part of North America’s most popular television show is at very least a mildly entertaining prospect for some. Who cares?

Everybody but you.

Nickelback vs the Pickle

If you’re on Facebook, you’ve likely received an invite by now to join a campaign to see if a pickle could collect more Facebook fans than the band Nickelback. The pickle is now officially winning with more than 1,414,000 fans, beating Nickelback’s followers by about 1,000.

Hating on Nickelback is SO passe. I can’t say they’re my favorite band, but they’ve sold 30-million albums. 30-million. For every 200 people on this planet… there is one Nickelback album.

Personally, I like trying something a little different. Not 3 theremin players tap-dancing under a black light in scuba gear different, but different, and maybe you do too. Not everybody makes music to be an artist. To some people music is a business.

If you opened a restaurant, you probably don’t want to be like every other restaurant, but if adding French fries to your menu doubles your clientele wouldn’t you give it a shot?

To some, music is the same way. If you developed a formula for writing songs that you knew would sell millions of copies as opposed to hundreds, wouldn’t you be inclined to stick with it just a little longer?

The irony of this whole thing is that hating on Nickelback, or Nickelbacklash as I called it back in 2003 when it was at least a somewhat original phenomenon is OLD. It’s been around for at least 6 or 7 years.

So really, the creators of this Facebook page are capitalizing on an overdone idea for the sake of shameless self-promotion… the very thing they’re claiming to hate… which is why I’ve created a Facebook group called, “Can this olive get more fans than the Pickle”.

… no, not really.

Movie director Kevin Smith has kicked off a Southwest Air flight this week because the pilot claimed he was, in essence, too fat to fly. He’s been through Edmonton recently on speaking tours and there’s no denying that he’s a substantial fellow. But too fat to fly?

I can appreciate both sides of this argument. If you pay for a full seat on an airplane, are you not entitled to be comfortable? To enjoy your seat without somebody’s gut hanging over onto your lap? On the otherhand, personally I’m a little on the tall side; I’ve got big shoulders. I certainly take up more than MY share of the seat. I tuck my elbows tight against my sides and still I take up the armrests, which is equally unfair to my fellow passengers. I wouldn’t take kindly to being kicked off a plane because they don’t feel I conform to THEIR size standards.

The irony of this whole situation is airplane seats are getting smaller – people are getting bigger. Sure being large is a choice, but is it a choice that should limit your travel options?

Photo Robbery

I managed to snap a picture of this photo radar trap on my iPhone this morning. It was set up meters from the edge of the construction zone for the 23rd Ave overpass. While I haven’t had the pleasure of “Photo Robbery” in this location, I’ve passed it in a similar spot every day for the last 2 weeks.

This time it was located just meters from the construction ZONE, but almost 10 blocks away from the actual construction (where NO ONE was working by the way [note: you can’t even SEE the overpass from the picture]). As you know, construction zones not only have reduced speed limits, the speed fines are double.

I hear a lot of people ragging on the Edmonton Police Service about this blatant cash-grab. However, as I understand it, these traps are set up by the Office of Traffic Safety NOT EPS. If you’re as ashamed as I am of this embarrasement of justice, I strongly encourage you to voice your opinion in the form of an email the address below… or open your wallet and let the robbery continue — your call.

I was at the gym this morning and I saw a girl with this massive tattoo across her back. It was text – English. The passage was SO long though, I couldn’t read it all. Partly because the bottom was obscured by her shirt and partly because I was only there for an hour and a half. I just simply didn’t have time to read it all.

I’m not against getting text tattoos; inspirational quotes, your own personal little mission statement – hell if you’ve got Alzheimer’s and you wanna tattoo your address across your forearm – fine. But entire paragraphs? That’s a little much. It was like the start of The Empire Strikes back – I lost interest.

It’s one thing if it’s somewhere where YOU can read it. But this woman would need 2 mirrors to see this thing. It’s in a place for others to read. It’s like someone wearing a funny t-shirt, you can’t help but try to read it, but I don’t wanna look like a creepo because you decided to tattoo the great American novel across your back. I think if you’re gonna get a tattoo like that, there should be a 20 word limit – or maybe like twitter, if you can’t express it in 140 characters or less, you shouldn’t be allowed to get it tattooed.

I watched the Grammies on Sunday…he awards show where the most important people in music get all dressed up and gather together to be peed on by Pink. If you didn’t see the show, Pink’s performance involved her hanging from the ceiling and spinning around on a trapeze – it was very impressive. But then, water started spraying out of everywhere all over the crowd.

Take a look at this outfit. She came out on stage wearing a middle-east inspired dress. I thought to myself; it’s refreshing to see a woman wear something a little more conservative. That lasted all of about 5 seconds, at which point Pink ripped off her dress, underneath which she was wearing… a shoelace.

It’s almost as though Pink and Lady Gaga were having a contest to see who could show the most skin. In fact, during Lady gaga’s duet with Elton John I was thinking this is probably as close as Elton John’s ever come to seeing a woman naked.

I looked in the mirror yesterday and I spotted quite possibly the world’s longest eyebrow hair. It was over an inch long. My first instinct was to pluck it, so I wound the end of it around my finger and prepared to yank it out… yeah it was long enough to actually wind it around my finger. I squinted a little bit, I braced myself, but I couldn’t bring do it.

It’s not like I’m not gonna grow another one. I trim my eyebrows every week. It’s like a healthy forest – you gotta have a controlled burn every so often. I think THAT’s why I was so impressed by this massive eyebrow hair. Despite routine clear cutting, I still managed to harvest this huge thick luscious brow hair. You could cut this thing in half and count the rings. This had to be old growth — it was like the tree of souls in Avatar.

I stood there for a minute trying to dissect just why it was I couldn’t bring myself to pluck this world record eye brow hair. I certainly wasn’t afraid of the pain. I did want it gone. That’s when it occurred to me that I was proud-barrassed of it. Both proud and embarrassed at the same time. I had to show somebody. It was a matter of public record.

I’d hate to think of trying to show it to someone after the fact, cause they would never believe it was an eyebrow. They’d think I plucked a bristle off a paintbrush or something and I was working on the world’s lamest practical joke. So I did. I had a little exhibition of my friend, after which I managed to yank it out and felt better. My question for you: what are YOU proud-barrassed of?

Do People Still Use Fax Machines?

After a brief experiment on yesterday’s show, using the Fax machine to collect requests for SONiC’s Quick Fix at 6ix. The answer is yes, there are still two people using this obsolete technology.

For those under 30… a fax is basically just like email, only they charge you long distance. Well, that and it’s unreliable, it takes longer, and it prints every single message whether you like it or not. Image the trees you would kill, if you printed off every little spam and Farmville request you got.

I think most of the people still using fax machines are in industries where signatures are required – the medical industry for instance. To be honest, it makes me nervous that the people responsible for our health are still using such antiquated technology. They should have the latest, greatest, most space aged scanning equipment available with flashing lights and lots of beeping – so you know it’s working. Yet they’re using fax machines.

Who knows, they might still be using carrier pigeons but the orderlies got tired of mopping up the bird droppings off of the foreheads of their bed-ridden patients.

Apple’s Next Big Thing… the iPad

Everybody’s talking about the latest little piece of technology from Apple; a tablet computer called… the iPad. If you’re just hearing about this for the first time, bad news, you AREN’T the first one to make the maxi-pad joke.

Am I missing something or isn’t this just basically it’s an iPhone with a 10 inch screen. Being the iPhone disciple I am, having a slightly larger screen would be helpful. Although when I’m heading out for a jog with my iPhone, I don’t find myself thinking “jeese I wish this thing were bigger and more cumbersome.”

I went and saw “The Lovely Bones” over the weekend. Pretty good. The movie is actually based on a book, and everybody always says the book was WAY better than the movie. Even people who’ve never read the book say that – it’s like you’re trying to convince the world that you can read. I never read it, but I’m curious about how they might show some of the scenes that ended up in the movie.

A story about a teenage girl, murdered by a serial killer. But instead of going to heaven or hell she goes to… Wonderland. It’s not actually Wonderland, but it might as well be. She’s stuck in the “in-between”; this place where you can walk on water and it rains lollipops basically – it’s like a 2 and a half hour music video. She’s at her house, and then the house melts away and then suddenly she’s tobogganing on a rainbow. I’ve never been snuffed out by a serial killer, but if it’s really the fun, carefree acid trip THE movie portrayed it to be – I’d be doing a lot more hitchhiking.

Avatar was the biggest movie at the box office for a third straight week. James Cameron’s latest 3D alien movie masterpiece became one of only 5 films EVER to take in over a billion dollars. I saw it over the holidays and it WAS pretty good.

Basically the humans are trying to evict the aliens from their homes to pilfer the foreign planet’s resources. I think part of the reason the movie has been so successful is that the underlying theme echoes how a lot of us are feeling about the situation with the US and the oil in the Middle East.

Plus, there humans controlling robot warriors who battle aliens riding flying dinosaurs – it’s like watching a 2 and a half hour long Muse video. It was pretty epic.

I was glad to hear as I was leaving the theatre that I wasn’t the only one who found the female alien appealing.

I was aroused, but in kind of a shame-filled “reading National Geographic back in junior high” kind of way. Forbidden love – the main character is human, but he falls in love with this alien girl.

I get the impression that we secretly fantasize about intergalactic, inter-species intercourse. The weird thing was I rented District 9 the night before – another Sci-fi flick – this one about alien invasion, but again dealt with “getting’ it on with the aliens”. Do we think about Mattress Surfing with the Martians a lot, or is that just a coincidence?

AIW is one of my favourite childhood stories (don’t judge me) and Tim Burton is just the kind twisted soul to put a fresh coat of weird on this classic tale. Can’t wait!

As we approach the turn of the decade, I hear a lot of people throwing around the term “aught” in reference to the last 10 years. There were the 80’s the 90’s now… the “aughts”. Am I the only one who doesn’t know where this word came from? Possibly.

Despite its popularity I have yet to have anyone explain the origin of the “aughts” to my satisfaction. So I did some poking around on the internet. Apparently aught ias just another name for zero. It’s old English. As in 1907 would be called “nineteen aught seven”. Hence – the aughts.

Now as much as its in my nature to criticize everything that I don’t understand, I must admit. I kinda like it. It’s nowhere near as obvious as I feel it should be – I DID have to look it up, but since it’s a word we don’t use for any other purpose – it kinda works.

I was out shopping for Christmas presents last night when I came upon the absolute SADDEST thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life. I was in London Drugs browsing through the small appliances section of the store looking for something for my mom.

Hmm… portable electric hibachi that plugs into the cigarette lighter in your car? Mom DOES like to barbecue when she’s driving, I’ll mark that down as a maybe.

Then, as I was passing the coffee makers section, I saw it… a coffee maker for one.

Sure, there are coffee makers that make just 2 or 3 cups, which certainly have their uses. I picture an elderly couple discussing about their plans for the day over a cup of coffee, or perhaps a couple of women commiserating about the pain of childbirth over an afternoon coffee.

I’ve even seen coffee makers so itty bitty, they only fill a commuter mug. Put one of those on your counter it announces to the world – “I’m a person with places to go… but I also understand the value of a dollar”.

But a coffee for one? A coffee perk that makes only ONE, single, solitary cup of coffee? That’s just sad. Not only does it reveal that you live alone, but also that you have NO FRIENDS. There’s NO chance a buddy, a co-worker might drop by for a hot drink. Even neighbors coming by to borrow a cup of sugar will most certainly not be invited in. Might as well remove your house number from the front of your house all together, cause let’s face it – no one’s coming to visit you.

You aren’t just a hermit or a recluse… you’ve committed to the lifestyle. You won’t even accidentally strike up a friendship with the chatty girl at the cash register.

The world’s most widely acclaimed anthropologist has died – a man dubbed “the father of modern anthropology”. You probably have absolutely NO idea who this guy is. Like me, up until I read about his passing.

This man’s name… is Claude Levi-Strauss. His last name is LEVI-STRAUSS.

Here is a man who revolutionized the way we think about relationships and our origins as human beings. He was a leader in his field; an Einstein, an Edison. But sadly, what comes to mind when you hear the name Claude Levi-Strauss? JEANS!

Poor Claude Levi-Strauss — living in the shadow of a man whose only legacy is making pants. 2 leg holes and a button fly… how hard could it possibly be? He didn’t exactly cure cancer did he?

Then, after having spent a good part of last weekend painting and working on the basement, I arrived at work on Monday morning that I realized… I built SONiC!

Is “Cougar” the new “Bitch”?

Cougartown premieres tonight (September 23rd), starring Courteney Cox, who plays a divorcee; a newly single 40-something woman looking to recapture the wild years of her 20s that she never had.

Cougar is a slang term for an older woman who likes younger men. It started as an insult, or at elast I think it did, but now the term is commonplace. It certainly isn’t the first slur to find its way into our mainstream vocabulary.

There was a time when bitch was one of the most offensive terms a woman could possibly be called. Then, about 10 years ago, people started taking ownership of that term. There were bumper stickers made warning “I go from Zero to BITCH in less than 3 seconds”. There was even that Meredith Brooks song called “Bitch”.

Now, a 46-year-old Demi Moore moves in on a 31-year-old Ashton Kutcher and we’re making sitcoms called Cougartown and nobody bats an eye. I think cougar the new bitch?

Beware the Illegal Taxi

I read today that Edmonton Police handed out $15,000 in fines during a Friday night crackdown on illegal taxis in Edmonton. Illegal being unlicensed. They have drivers licenses, just not TAXI licenses. Some were licensed in other municipalities; others were drivers using their family cars to pick up passengers. On Friday night, police set up shop in two Edmonton hotels and started calling some of the so-called “bandit taxis” asking for a ride to the airport or the Fringe Festival.

I’m the first one to admit I know NOTHING about law enforcement. NOTHING. But I can take a walk down 118th Ave or Whyte any night of the week and score just about anything imaginable. So a sting operation to catch illegal taxis seems like waste of police resources. Doesn’t it? Drinking and driving continues to rise. I remember a couple of years ago I went to a Christmas party, I had drinks so I called a cab. I waited over 2 hours!!! 2 hours. Which indicates to me that we need MORE taxis on the road. Not less. A STING operation to catch unlicensed taxis.
