I've recently been getting some very persistent telemarketers from TD Canada Trust and Royal Bank. I wanted to cut down on the amount of telemarketing that I receive, as I primarily use a cell phone for personal and business calls, and it's expensive enough already without literally wasting time talking to a telemarketer.

I emailed TD Canada Trust at their contact address of customer.service@td.com, and this was their response (salutations and personal info removed):

I replied to the email with my full name and contact information and I was removed from their list, and have not received an unsolicited call again from TD Canada Trust. I would have preferred removing myself from their list via their online banking website, EasyWeb, but when asked about it, they replied:

I sent a similar email to the Royal Bank through their online form, which is accessible by clicking on "Contact Us" at the top of their website, "Personal Banking Services" and then clicking "send us an email.". The Royal Bank responded with:

I logged into my online banking, and was unable to find the "Send Instructions & Questions" link, but clicking on "Customer Support Center" and then "Secure Message Center" brought me to a secure form with my name pre-populated. I submitted my request using this form, and the unsolicited phone calls from the Royal Bank have now stopped.

In addition to this, I took the Royal Bank's advicec and visited the-cma.org and registered my name, phone number, fax number and address with the CMA's Do Not Contact Service. Hopefully this will also reduce the amount of new junk mail I receive in my mailbox.

If anyone has any additional advice on how to reduce unsolicited phone calls and junk mail, add it to the comments!

The New Rules for Driving in Calgary

You must first learn to pronounce the city name, it is: "CAL-GREE".
The morning rush hour is from 5:00am to noon. The evening rush hour is from noon to 8:00pm. Friday's rush hour starts on Thursday morning.
The minimum acceptable speed on most freeways is 130 kph. On Deerfoot, you are expected to match the speed of the airplanes coming in for a landing at the airport. Anything less is considered "Wussy".
Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere. Calgary now has its own version of traffic rules. For example, cars/trucks with the loudest muffler go first at a four-way stop; the trucks with the biggest tires go second. However, Hamptons , SUV-driving, cell phone-talking moms ALWAYS have the right of way.
If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will be rear ended, cussed out, and possibly shot.
Never honk at anyone. Ever. Seriously. It's another offense that can get you shot.
Road construction is permanent and continuous in Calgary . Detour barrels are moved around during the middle of the night to make the next day's driving a bit more exciting, but nothing ever gets finished, and more construction starts everyday.
Watch carefully for road hazards such as drunks, skunks, dogs, cats, deer, barrels, cones, cows, horses, cats, mattresses, shredded tires, garbage, squirrels, rabbits, crows, and coyotes feeding on any of these items.
16th Ave, TransCanada, and “Hwy #1” are the same road.
If someone actually has their turn signal on, wave them to the shoulder immediately to let them know it has been "accidentally activated."
If you are in the left lane and only driving 110 in a 80-90 kph zone, you are considered a road hazard and will be "flipped off" accordingly. If you return the flip, you'll be shot.
For winter driving, it is advisable to wear your parka, toque, fur lined mittens and mukluks. Make sure you have a shovel, food, candle and blankets in the vehicle, as snow removal from the city streets is virtually non-existent until the spring thaw.
It is important to close all gaps in traffic! This prevents cars from swooping in front of you because they didn't want to line up in the right hand lane to exit. (ex. Crowchild to Bow Trail, Deerfoot to Glenmore and vice versa)
Anyone driving a car over $75K is allowed to drive like an ass and you must yield to them because they can afford a better lawyer than you can.
Anyone who stops in a merge lane, will be shot.
If you are driving in the NE, do not make eye contact with people, or you will be shot
For folks from England, Shaganappi, it's not what you think.....
When driving in adverse conditions, you slow down to half the posted limit, but still tailgate. Apparently you can stop on a dime on ice as long as you are going half speed. (this is especially true if you are driving a big SUV)
If someone is signaling to change into your lane, speed up and close the gap so they can't get over.
If you are the one signaling, slap yourself in the head for being so stupid and just swerve over next time before they can react!

How To: Avoid Telemarketers!

One of my favourite websites, Consumerist.com, recently posted an article about how to stop telemarketers from calling! Apparently, one little phrase will do it: "If you ever call me again, I'm going to contact my lawyer."

I like it! It's simple, and apparently effective (at least in the US). Several of the article's comments were hilarious if possibly less effective:

SaveMeJeebus says: I just tell my three-year old that it is Nemo or Lightning McQueen on the phone. He tells them about his dumptruck, puppy, and apple juice. It is especially amusing when he is done talking to them and the survey/telemarketer is still on the line.
aparsons says: Just keep asking them to talk dirty to you, over and over.
capturedshadow says: "I'm so glad you called, I need someone to tell me how to get blood out of a carpet, I mean a whole lot of blood"

Joe Heckel purchased a TKO brand punching bag earlier this year. He was moving it one day and decided to take a look inside. What did he find in the bag? Sand? Plastic Pellets? Styrofoam? NO!

He found mostly soiled underwear stuffed into the bag. Apparently, the smell was "bad, real bad."

I for one expect the underwear punching bag to be put up for sale on eBay. I mean, it's the stereotypical Japanese Businessman's dream! A whole bag! Full of _soiled_ underwear! I BID $5000!

Tommy v2's Verizon Exit Interview

Tom spent 5 weeks as a Tech Support Agent at one of Verizon's many call centres before deciding to quit and find a better job. Apparently, it's Verizon's policy to have employees fill out an Exit Interview when they quit.
