My partner and I have been together for about 18 years. Our first first date happened in September 1993. I still remember wondering about what he likes to do for fun, what are his political leanings, what’s the last book he read, what does he like to eat for his favorite dinner and does he like to dance. Maybe not in that order, but seriously, I distinctly remember thinking those questions and trying to work them into conversation during the date. In my mind, these are all worthy first date questions. We all have different questions that are important when getting to know people. There are so many more to ask, but you have to start somewhere.

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, I’ve been observing and asking around about how people pamper their partners. People are tickled to share how they intend to focus their affections on their lovers. I love to listen and always am entertained by the answers: expansive boxes of chocolate, a double dozen of roses, the candlelit dinner at the swank restaurant, even diamond earrings! So far most of my friends haven’t surprised me with their gestures. They’re pretty predictable albeit lovely and indulgent treats.

One challenge of being a mama is having a place just for me. When my boys were itty bitties, I couldn’t imagine having any personal space. Not even the immediate arm’s reach around my body, as they were usually dangling from my shoulder in the sling or right next to me in bed breathing their baby breath in my face. This phenomenon also included their copious stuff with baby blankets and rattles everywhere.

In October 2010, the pharmaceutical company Boehringer abandoned the research and development of a drug deemed the pink Viagra. Since the introduction of Viagra and other similar drugs, there has been a quest to develop a similar drug for the treatment of female sexual dysfunction. This quest continues because of the outcry from doctors and other helping professionals that they are facing an epidemic of women presenting with symptoms of the amorphous “female sexual dysfunction,” including such diagnoses as hypoactive sexual desire disorder and low libido.

Today is October 20, 2010, a day chosen for consciousness-raising and activism to support gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and queer (GLBTQ) youth in the wake of many teen suicides from bullying based on sexuality. I feel moved to share the video of Joel Burns, a Fort Worth City Councilman, sharing his story of how “It Gets Better.” The It Gets Better Project was started by Dan Savage, the outspoken author and podcaster of Savage Love, to pass the message to GLBTQ youth that their lives will get better; that they should persevere through the challenges of discrimination while teens because the cultural climate improves once they move out of middle and high school.

Living Balance has kept me very busy these last months. With the amazing experience of “I’ll Have What She’s Having” and “Pleasure-gasm” at Homecoming: A Women’s Retreat behind me, I have fully settled into my new office. It is cozy and teeming with great energy!

In working with many clients, one theme has continued to emerge. As individuals and as a culture, we don’t value nor allow enough time in our lives to truly relax and mindfully enjoy pleasure. Readers of Thoughts from the Edge will recognize the lack of value in pleasure as a theme of my blog.

Recent research has focused on the effects of being constantly “plugged in” to electronic media, email, phones and other sources of information and communications. This New York Times article is food for thought as you reflect on the effects of the never-ending flow of information and stimulation to which we subject ourselves.
