Free Reign : Blank To Basics is a drawing and illustration challenge that aims to investigate the approach of "the sketch" with a specific outlook on its very nature: raw thoughts and pure paper.
This exploration of medium will allow the void of the empty page to come to life, by restoring the primal nature of drawing.

Photographs by Youmna Habbouche
August 24 through September 19, 2009

Location: The Running Horse – Contemporary Art Space, Sleep Comfort Depot, Medawar District, Beirut

"Rule of three" consists of Youmna Habbouche series of triptychs, illustrating various details of the daily life of the artist and her relationship to her surroundings. The use of the triptych format create unexpected alliances, both in terms of themes, and in terms of colors, textures, and the spatial arrangement of the different elements photographed." - Ziad Nawfal, curator

Horror is Universal (The End) is Raed Yassin’s latest multimedia saga involving the deconstruction of Arab popular culture. For the last five years Yassin has been undergoing a lifetime project of audio and visual sampling of TV, radio, pop songs, feature and documentary films. His previous projects include Ya Habibi Ta’ala (focusing on Tarab), Meeting the President and other pieces for Praed (his duo with Paed Conca), or the installation work The Best of Sammy Clark. This new piece, in its live version, is a milestone in his evolving work. Although composed, it requires his presence and energy for the multiple layers of information to blend in. Soundwise, a combination of turntables and electronics, microphone for singing, a collection of vintage hard to find LPs of popular Arabic music. He does not merely mix the sounds, he performs them, twisting every sample with a style that has become his own. On the screen, a video mixture of extracts from Egyptian films, reshaped and rearranged, abstracted, recurring such as musical elements to create a loose progression towards a final point. With Horror is Universal (The End), Raed Yassin sets a very high standard for all those interested in the “plunder” approach to all the mass media that have shaped our youth.

Maroun Kassab will be exhibiting some of his latest work at Zico House in Sanayeh, Beirut, from August 19th till August 25th, 2009. The exhibition consists of experimental work in Ink/Pencil and color from Gouaches to Watercolors to even highlighters. Zico House is open from 4pm till 8pm daily except for Sunday.

"This series is a catalyst for future work. It's experimental, and it's somewhat a study of relationships, both on a human level, and on an artistic level. There are certain relationships that are mirrored in different compositions, and these relationships speak to us. The series is intended not to be representational so that it can pass beyond our usual concepts of what is common, and open up a space for contemplation."

The opening will be on August 19 at 6:00pm at Zico House. Details below:

About the event
Within the framework of the exhibition “Earth of Endless Secrets”, Beirut Art Center has programed screenings of Akram Zaatari’s video work.

Video in Five Movements (video fi khams harakat)
2006. 9’. Silent
In the 1950s and 1960s, Hashem el-Madani, a studio photographer from Saida, discovered the pleasure of shooting Super-8 film. He asked his subjects to shake hands, walk toward the camera and ascend or descend stairs. The video is an assemblage of Madani’s footage, a time capsule and a tribute to the art of moving pictures.

Reflection (nour)
1995. 10’. Without dialogue
In this video about illumination and friendship, a boy discovers how to manipulate light with a mirror (an integral part of a camera) and introduces the idea of making images into the rituals of daily life among children living in the old city of Saida, Zaatari’s hometown in South Lebanon.

Wassat Bayrout (With Rachad el-Jisr)
1992. 10’. Silent
A group of young boys play choreographed war games amid the architecture of Downtown Beirut in the aftermath of Lebanon’s civil war. While the boys shoot each other with toy guns, the camera lingers on the areas inhabitants, most of whom were displaced by fighting in South Lebanon and are about to be displaced once more.

Her + Him Van Leo (Hia wa houa Van Leo)
2001. 32’.
Arabic, English & French, subtitled in English
A nude portrait of a grandmother provides the pretext for visiting the Armenian-Egyptian photographer Van Leo. The resulting documentary portrays a craftsman who was one of the few studio photographers of his time to consider himself an artist, too. The work seeks to critically consider photography from the 1940s and 1950s without resorting to nostalgia. It creates a dialogue between traditional studio portraiture and experimental video, traces shifts in artistic practice and terminology, and evokes the social, urban and political transformations that took place over a half-century of Egyptian history.

About the exhibition
Prisoner Of War gathers a body of works that systematically aestheticize the war. The exhibited work appropriates the most iconographic, or widely known, artworks from renowned contemporary Lebanese and Arab artists in fabulated visual constructions. The project aims to question and challenge this new generation's unyielding contextual practices in tackling issues of war, identity and memory, and attempts to further highlight an inability to operate or exist outside these aesthetic parameters. Artists are seemingly condemned to remain classified - within the Western laboratory conducted by curators and institutions - as Arab, Middle Eastern or regional artists. The Prisoner Of War becomes a prisoner of this fabricated context.

About the exhibition
Beirut Art Center is organizing a major solo exhibition of the work of Lebanese artist Akram Zaatari in collaboration with Sfeir-Semler Gallery (Beirut). The exhibition is divided into two parts that are being shown simultaneously at Sfeir-Semler Gallery and Beirut Art Center.

At Beirut Art Center, Zaatari will present work that is based on the letters and photographs of a former Lebanese prisoner in Israel named Nabih Awada. Born in Aytaroun, Lebanon, in 1972, Nabih Awada joined the Lebanese resistance as a member of the Communist Party in 1986, and took part in several military operations against the Israeli army in Southern Lebanon before he was captured in September 1988. He was taken to a prison in Israel but could not be sentenced until two years later, when he turned eighteen. Nabih spent most of his sentence in Askalan Prison and was released in 1998.

Zaatari’s installation at Beirut Art Center includes the works Neruda’s Garden, a set of photographs of documents, and Untold, an installation of photographs and videos.

Neruda’s Garden
15 photographs. Various sizes.

While still in Askalan Prison, Nabih Awada’s communication with his family was restricted to letters, a few photographs, audiotapes, and one short video. Awada’s letters were written with an extremely positive tone, through which he tried to assure his family and friends that he was in good health, and that he was strong. Letters were signed with his nickname Neruda, and were often decorated with colorful flowers and with loving expressions. This work focuses on the difficulty of communicating situations of long isolation; in other terms, it focuses on all that Awada’s letters could never say.

Untold
A set of 48 photographs of prisoners, 2 videos and one light-box.

This work focuses on all that remains unsaid among prisoners, and among resistance fighters in general. In Zaatari’s new video “Letter to Samir” (2008, 32 minutes), Nabih Awada writes a letter to Samir al-Qintar right after his release by the Israelis in July 2008. In his letter, Awada tells al-Qintar all what he cannot tell him in real-life, and carefully wraps the letter and seals it inside a plastic capsule. The video is presented against a backdrop of 48 photographs of prisoners in different prisons in Israel, all of which are dedicated to Awada.

About the event
Within the framework of the exhibition “Earth of Endless Secrets”, Beirut Art Center has programed screenings of Akram Zaatari’s video work.

Red Chewing Gum (Al-Ilka al-Hamra)
2000. 10’. Arabic, subtitled in English
In this “video letter,” an unseen, unnamed narrator recalls an incident that took place fifteen years ago on Hamra Street, Beirut’s famed cosmopolitan causeway. He and the letter’s addressee, a former lover, followed a young street vendor and stole his one piece of masticated red chewing gum. The story gives rise to considerations of desire, pleasure, pursuit and longing.

Baalbeck: The Drift
2001. 23’. Arabic, subtitled in English
A photographer and a journalist have been assigned to cover a concert to be held among the majestic ruins of Baalbeck in eastern Lebanon. On their way to the show, they get sidetracked when they catch sight of a young man. They follow him relentlessly, collecting the traces – or evidence – of his presence.

How I Love You (Shou Bhabbak)
2001. 29’. Arabic, subtitled in English
In this study of sexuality among gay men in Lebanon, one couple and three characters discuss relationships, passions, commitments and failures in a society where homosexuality remains punishable by law. The video uses light to create a white veil over the subjects, which prevents viewers from seeing or identifying their faces. By obstructing the image, the work locates itself in a specific social context, at a time and place where certain rights are not granted.

Bathroom Naughtiness (Zaaraneh bel Hammem)
2000. 2’. Arabic, subtitled in English
A man and a woman stand facing each other, reciting lines from a poem. The poem, narrated from the point of view of a woman who spots a man from her bedroom window and invites him into her bed, subverts the sweetness of Arabic love songs with black humor and graphic descriptions of sex acts.

Crazy of You (Majnounak)
1997. 26’. Arabic, subtitled in English
Set in the industrial suburbs of Beirut, Majnounak explores male sexuality through interviews with three men who recount the beginning, middle and end of a sexual encounter. The video examines the details of shaping the body, language and song through fantasy. It also explores the ways in which masculinity is constructed, allowing the men to project images of themselves as courageous as they seduce and conquer. Yet through their stories, desire is reduced to a commodity and relationships lead to defeat.
