Good Samaritan Motorcyclist Killed

One of my sister's friends was killed on his motorcycle while trying to get the license plate number of a driver involved in a hit-and-run.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this time.

From the Zanesville Times Recorder -

A motorcyclist was killed as he tried to be a Good Samaritan and get the license plate of a motorist who was involved in an accident at the Duke & Duchess on Blue Avenue Monday afternoon.

According to Capt. Mike Baker of the Zanesville Police Department, the man who was riding a motorcycle witnessed a hit-and-skip at the gas station at the corner of Blue and Adair avenues just before 2 p.m.

The man was trying to get the license plate number of a black Honda involved in the accident and was heading north on Blue Avenue at a high rate of speed when he ran into the side of a red SUV. The driver of the SUV was traveling south on Blue Avenue and attempted to turn onto Forest Avenue, Baker said.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead, Baker said.

The two occupants of the SUV were transported by Lifeflight to a Columbus hospital, but Baker was not releasing their names.

Blue Avenue was shut down for several hours as the Zanesville Police Department along with the Ohio State Patrol investigated.

"We were glad to have their help," Baker said. "They do accident reconstructions all the time and they were great out there."

Baker said it was sad that the motorcycle rider died as a result of trying to help someone out.

"The guy on the motorcycle was trying to be of some help," Baker said. "The really sad part of this whole thing is that the front license plate from the Honda was left at the scene and we were able to get the information we needed from it."

One arrest has been made, Baker said, in connection with the accident.

Comment on the article by the motorcyclist's brother Ryan -

David Bailey was my brother and life long friend. When growing up he helped teach his baby brother right from wrong - mainly by doing things that were ornery.

He was ALWAYS the life of the party and at our family gatherings for the holidays, or just hangin out. Just want to tell you bro how hard this is for me now that you are gone.

I'm soooo thankful we grew close over the years and I have always been happy to call you my brother. Rest in Peace my beloved brother and I will see you again sometime soon.

Thanks for always trying to help, even ordinary strangers. I spoke to the victim's father of the hit-in-skip and he was with the family for quite some time after you passed. You always amazed me!

Susan, Brian, Laura, & I rode down to the Fifth Third Stadium to watch the Mud Hens Baseball game.

We met up with Jeff, Eric, and Johanna at the Swamp Shop, bought dinner, and found our seats.

It was a great time even though the Hens lost in extra innings.

After finishing my NATCA day, Susan and I rode to Elmore, Ohio, to visit the Schedel Arboretum and Gardens.

The ride there was a bit interesting. Google Maps let us down. We ended up just outside of Fremont before we decided to turn around.

After riding through some of NW Ohio's farmland, we arrived at the gardens.

It is a huge garden with different themes throughout. The Japanese garden was my favorite. Susan liked a sculpture called "The Cloak".

We left the gardens and rode through Elmore, Genoa, and Millbury. Thunderstorms were blowing in from the Northwest, so we had to hurry to stay out of the showers.

There was no way that we were going to make it home without getting soaked, so we stopped at P.F. Changs for dinner and ate on the patio while the storms blew over.

We rode to the NW Ohio Rib-Off at the Lucas County Fairgrounds. Eric and Johanna met us there, and we all had dinner.

Armadillo's Ribs were great like always. The line to their counter was 5 times as long as anyone else's.

Empire Drift was the opening band for Bo Bice. Unfortunately, a thunderstorm had build up behind us; so we had to run back to the bike and head home.

We stayed out of the rain until the last mile and a half where we ran into heavy rain and got soaked.

From WTOL -

LUCAS COUNTY (WTOL) - The Ohio State Highway Patrol is cracking down on reckless motorcycle drivers.

Starting Wednesday, August 6 through September 5, troopers will be looking for motorcyclists who are driving recklessly and speeding. Officers will also be enforcing motorcycle licensing laws.

The patrol will be focused on Airport Highway, the Anthony Wayne Trail, and Detroit Avenue in Toledo.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says motorcycle wrecks are up this year. In 2007, Lucas County has three fatal motorcycle crashes. This year, they have matched that number in only seven months.

Also, there is an increase in motorcycles on the roadways locally. In Lucas County, there are 9,000 motorcycles registered with the BMV and 20,000 motorcycle endorsements on Ohio licenses.

Long Way Down

Susan, Brendt, Mark, and I went to the director's cut screening of Long Way Down. The director's cut was paired down to 2 hours. The original episodes last nearly 6 hours.

The beginning of the movie felt rushed; but once in Africa, it was amazing. I can't imagine the differences in culture that they dealt with.

I know that I'll never be able to do a ride like that, but it would be a fantastic experience.

Ride to Hudson Leather

KC, Mark, Janelle, and I rode back out to Hudson Leather today. The ride there was fantastic. We took back roads through Northwest Ohio's farmland.

We didn't buy too much. I got a new magnetic tank bag and some deerskin gloves, and we all bought biker bells for the guys at work.

Ride Around NW Ohio

Today's weather was absolutely beautiful. I think it was the best riding day of the year. I was planning on going to the Lucas County Fair, but I couldn't find anyone to go with me.

So I lone wolf'd it around NW Ohio and Southern Michigan. I rode to Sylvania, Berkey, Lyons, Morenci, Archbold, and Wauseon.

Riding through the farmland was very relaxing. There was very little traffic, and the small towns are so cool.

Tonight, we rode to a fairly new place in town called Salsarita's.

The food was good. We got a variety of tacos, nachos, and burritos.

We also installed a fender that we fabricated onto Brad's bike.

After dinner, Susan & I, Beav, and Jeff rode down Route 65 to Rita's in Grand Rapids for ice cream.

I'm pleased to announce that Brain Toniq is now "The Official Think Drink of Lucas County Choppers."

I found out about Brain Toniq a few weeks ago and tried it. Since then, I have nearly stopped drinking regular soda altogether.

If you are interested, use this link to try some. Your order will help us out in a big way.

Happy Fourth!

Tonight, Susan and I rode up to Jeff's house to watch Sylvania's fireworks. The trip up there was difficult to say the least. With all of the rain last night, all of the roads that I wanted to take were flooded. So after turning around in the road 3 times and almost dumping the bike once, we finally made it to his house.

The Sylvania Fireworks were great, and all the fireworks that were shot off from private residences were really impressive. I can't imagine how much some of the people spent on fireworks this year.

We stayed at Jeff's for a little while after the end of the show to try to let the traffic clear out. We started riding with fireworks going off in every direction. It was really cool looking as we started riding into Michigan.

After 20 minutes or so, we were able to get onto the interstate and get back into Ohio before heading home.
