Compiled by:
Kelley Saucier

Ideas by:
Ummm..."Interesting" Board Members & Fans!

The Top Ten Reasons to Join the Lake Charles Symphony!
The writers over here at the LC Symphony Blog have been busy pounding the pavement asking our audience members their number one reason to join the Symphony. We were overwhelmed by their responses, but we finally have the BEST reasons to join compiled into the perfect list.

Here we go:

10. Two words: Beast Feast!

9. Prime opportunity to scope out Bohuslav Rattay’s posterior. Did we mention he’s European? AND rides a Ducati?

8. Nine out of ten surveys show regular symphony attendance raises your IQ 25 points….per symphony attended. Which surveys? Wait right here…I’ll get back to you.

7. The opportunity for a new symphony wardrobe. 7A. New shoes to go with your new wardrobe.

6. Rosa Hart Theatre seats are softer than football stadium seating and no lines for the bathroom!

5. If you join the LCS, when people say that you are cultured, they won't mean that you are possibly contagious.

4. It will lend credence to your claim to be The Most Interesting Man in the World.

3. Chicks dig it.

2. You need more culture than your Yoplait provides…

AND the Number 1 Reason TO JOIN the Lake Charles Symphony TODAY is:
DRUMROLL……………..

1. Everyone on your Franz Liszt has already joined!!!!

Seriously, do you need any more reasons? Call the office or join online RIGHT NOW! Don’t get left out: once you join us, you will be Bach for more. “When you’re a Jet, you’re Jet all the way!” – It’s Bernstein’s West Side Story suite (New York) to a Czech favorite by Smetana! This opening concert the “Journey from the Czech Republic to New York City” is going to be fantastic. (All the cool Jets are going to be there!) So, for sure mark your calendars, get a sitter or bring the kids. The night is going to be special on many fronts.

The Lake Charles Symphony under the direction of Maestro Bohuslav Rattay opens its 55th season with a concert honoring William Kushner, beloved and longtime conductor of the symphony. The symphony has chosen “Journeys” as its theme for the 2012-2013 season. Its theme reflects movement, both literally and figuratively. For Maestro Rattay, it was a journey which began in Prague and ended in Lake Charles, a journey from playing bassoon in the orchestra to conducting that same orchestra!

When the Lake Charles Symphony’s dynamic, young conductor takes the podium in Rosa Hart Theater, he brings energy and passion to the music, whether it’s from his native Czech Republic or perennial concert favorites. He has received acclaim from critics and audiences around the world. So, what I am saying is that you should totally make the scene to find out why, right?

Rattay reflects on the upcoming season: “The gift of music allows us to take a journey of the soul. As human-beings, we relate to the sounds expressed in the music-the serenity, the sadness, the anxiety, the climax, and the final resolution all remind us of our past experiences - our own life journey. This season, I invite you to truly surrender to the music, and let it take you somewhere inside of yourself. Let’s journey through the music of the season together, remembering the experiences that have made us who we are, and perhaps along the way, rediscover who we want to be.”

Featured tenor will be Fred VanNess, Jr., a native of Kinder who studied at McNeese State University where his love of opera took flight. His recent engagements include Don Jose in Carmen with the North End Music Performing Arts Center, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni with Longwood Opera, and Tamino in Die Zauberflöte with Opera del West. Other credits are Rodolfo in La Boheme, Dr. Cajus in Falstaff, Charlie in Das Kliene Magahonny and Fenton in Falstaff as part of the Montefeltro Music Festival in Novafeltria, Italy. His concert credits consist of Handel’s “Judas Maccabeus” and “Messiah,” Bach’s Cantata 131 and Scott Joplin's 100th Anniversary of his opera Treemonisha.

So, make it a night to remember for yourself, your family, a date…or whatever! Any occasion is the perfect occasion for great music.

Music can move your feet and guide your steps on a
sonic adventure with the
55th Lake Charles Symphony's Season - Journeys!

Hey, are YOU a member of
the Lake Charles Symphony?
The 55th Season - Journeys

(BTW, mark Sept. 22 on your calendar!)
-by Angie Manning

To be honest, it never even dawned on me to become an actual member of the Lake Charles Symphony until this year. (It totally never occurred to me), and I figured that maybe other people needed to get that memo too!

It’s a no-brainer for a music lover, and the 55th season is going to be fantastic. It’s called Journeys, and each of the concerts will concentrate on a series of songs that will take audience members on a musical adventure. Classical music is more of a sonic journey anyway, which is why I personally adore it. The first concert the “Journey from the Czech Republic to New York City” will be Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m. Did you mark that on your calendar? Okay, good!

Back to being a member…the Symphony has all sorts of events and concerts throughout the year from the Summer Pops (which we just had), to the Wild Beast Feast and the Christmas Gala and popular Holiday Home Tour – in addition to the classical concert season. When you attend all these amazing, cultural events, you will naturally start to feel part of a larger musical community in the area. It’s really smart to become a member too because with your membership, you get tickets to the classical concerts. Plus, for first-time members, you also get a free Discovery Series pass. So, I know what you’re thinking…what is the Discovery Series?

The Discovery Series is a sneak preview of the concert on the books. It’s when our brilliant conductor, Bohuslav Rattay and several musicians from the symphony perform in someone’s home. Pretty cool, huh? It’s an intimate mini concert with explanations, and further insight into the pieces that will be performed at the concert. So, not to be confusing, but it is generally a separate membership, which is $20. But, for a first-time Symphony membership, the Discovery Series is thrown in as a bonus. Score! (No pun intended!)

So, if you love music and culture, step out onto the wild side and become a member of the Lake Charles Symphony. An individual membership is $50 and includes tickets to each classical concert. You can order your membership online here: http://www.lcsymphony.org/order-online.html, or you can call the Symphony office at 337.433.1611.
Are you ready for this?! The Motown musical era boasts some of the all-time greats like Marvin Gaye, The Temptations and The Supremes. This year, the Lake Charles Symphony invites everyone to jump on the “Soul Train” and take a nostalgic trip through the sixties for the Summer Pops Motown concert next Saturday, July 14.

For music-lovers who have never made it to a symphony concert, it’s a perfect way to experience the orchestra for the first time and meet the symphony’s conductor, Bohuslav Rattay, beginning his third season with the symphony. You can also meet some of the locals who are involved in supporting and promoting the symphony like co-chair of the Summer Pops, Richman Reinauer.

“It has been a blast working as co-chair of the 2012 Summer Pops. This group was determined to bring to Lake Charles a night combining the best of what a local symphony means to the community...some fun...some friends and family...some toe-tapping and most importantly some musical culture. Our Motown theme will bring some of the best national talent combined with our acclaimed local symphony to create a unique night of artistic fun,” said Reinauer.

Joining the party will also be Broadway stars! Singing the tunes that topped the Billboard charts during the sixties will be Broadway’s Ramona Keller, Destan Owens, and Kimberly JaJuan. Keller made her Broadway debut in “Smokey Joe’s Café” and originated the role of Radio 1 in Tony Kushner’s “Caroline or Change.” She revived this role in London at the Royal National Theater. Destan Owens starred on Broadway in “Rent,” “Smokey Joe’s Café,” and in “Dreamgirls” with Jennifer Holliday. Kimberly JaJuan has performed on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and National Tours of “Smokey Joe’s Café,” Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Music of the Night,” “Dreamgirls,” and “Ragtime.”

So, what’s important? You need to mark your calendars, make plans and get your tickets!

There are loads of people in the community who are in some ways like undercover agents, working to support the symphony. But, no one really “knows” this or understands who is involved. It’s like a secret society of devoted people who want classical music thrive in the area. This blog entry exposes one of those undercover agents – Billy Edwards. (He’s so busted! Secret agent cover – blown!)

In his first year as a member of the Symphony Board, Billy worked to attract the younger generation of music lovers to concerts by hosting the first Symphony After Party at The Porch Coffee House where audience members were able to socialize with conductor Bohuslav Rattay and orchestra members. With the Summer Pops Goes Motown on the horizon, I checked in with Billy to find out his take on the Lake Charles Symphony and the Motown Sound.

So, why are you involved in the Lake Charles Symphony?
Billy: “I believe music is a common denominator within communities. The symphony is such a big part of Lake Charles. When people think of the symphony, many think of concerts on Saturdays or Sunday afternoons, when in fact, it is so much more. It is a living organization which has many facets in our community, for example, the outreach with our youth in our public school systems. To see how many lives the symphony can touch each day, month, and year is why I am part of such a great organization.”

What do you enjoy about classical music?
Billy: “This is a hard one to answer in one sentence. I am a music major from McNeese, and I have grown up my entire life either listening to or playing classical music. For me, it is an escape. Learning the history of each piece, why the composer wrote it...and it’s as if each time I hear a piece, I learn something new. How great is that? How many things do you come across that provide such an experience?”

With the Motown Summer Pops concert coming up, July 14, what's your favorite Motown group?

Billy: “This is a loaded question. Where do I start? Favorite groups/artists: Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding (thanks to my Dad), The Isley Brothers (thanks again, Dad), the Supremes, and the list could go on forever. Motown stands for so much. When most people think of Motown, they might first think of that ‘Motown Sound.’ That sound which brings memories back no matter how old you are. You always remember where you heard it. Most importantly for me, Motown was the cannon that was instrumental in blasting down the walls of racial segregation in music.”

What is your favorite event that the symphony puts on, or do you have several that you like?
Billy: “Without a doubt it is the Summer Pops. Until this past year, it was my single favorite, but now with our Gala in December, I have two. Oh, and Beast Feast. So, I guess there are three. I love the energy at each, and it gives a new perspective to the diversity of the symphony.”

Anything that you would like to add?

Billy: “I would also like to challenge everyone to go to at least one symphony event, and while doing so bring at least one friend. The other thing that I would like to add is bring a child. Introduce them to the world of live music and performance. It is something they will cherish forever. For once the love of music is in you, you can never shake it!”

Bohuslav Rattay's father - also named Bohuslav!

As Father's Day Approaches, Bohuslav Rattay Reflects on the Influence his Father had on his Life:

-By Angie Manning

In many families, music is not something that randomly
shows up in one person. Even though it can, of course, most of the time –
almost – it’s in the blood. (I have absolutely no data to back this up), but
even if it is not the case that everyone is a professional musician in a
family, if someone in a family is intensely musical, it seems that it is passed
down for generations.

Music in a family is a collective experience. It’s a
gathering, a celebration, daily living in music, and it’s in the very air that
you breathe. In my life experience, it’s usually the case that musical people
have musical family trees. (Just something that I have noticed.)

So, as Father’s Day approached, I thought that it would
be interesting to see if that was the case with our conductor, Bohuslav Rattay.
Just to see – where he comes from – not just geographically, but musically.
What was his father’s influence on his musical life?

Bohuslav reflects on his father's influence on his life...

The Rattay Musical Family Tree:

“As you can tell from the picture, my dad is a trombone
player. Even though he is retired now, he still plays here and there but not as
intensely as he used to. His brother (Evzen), my
uncle, is a cellist, and so, the influence on me was coming from all different
directions. Their father, my grandpa, was an amateur violinist and pianist. To
this day, I have my grandpa's concert piano in my house.”

Yes, Bohuslav Had Piano Lessons!

“My dad started me on music at an early age, somewhere
around 5 years old. At first, I took piano lessons with a lady that lived in
the same apartment complex, but later, he took me to a music teacher that he
himself started with. My dad, being a professional musician, made sure I
practiced every day, or almost every day :) and that I was ready for my lessons
with my teacher.”

Bohuslav’s Time at the Prague Conservatory:

“Later on, during my studies at the conservatory of
music, my dad created many wonderful opportunities for me to play my instrument
(bassoon) with all different musical groups around town and even in his
orchestra at the theater. We spent many hours together rehearsing and
performing.”

Happy Father’s Day to Dad in Prague:

"Both of my parents live in Prague, very far away from
where I have chosen to spend my life. These days, there are fewer opportunities
for my father and I to enjoy music making together, but I know he is very proud
of me and supports me in spirit, wishing for me to enjoy my music making for
the rest of my life.”

Happy Father's Day from the Lake Charles Symphony!

See you July 14 when the Symphony Goes Motown - Summer

"Kushner - A Lifetime of Music"

-By Angie Manning

The late William Kushner, former director of the Lake Charles Symphony, was recently honored with the Tourism Lifetime Service Award, with Marsha Kushner accepting the award. During National Tourism Week, the Lake Charles/Southwest Louisiana Convention & Visitors Bureau recognized Kushner's many years of commitment to bringing music to life with the Lake Charles Symphony thereby enhancing the culture of Southwest Louisiana from a tourism perspective.

Kushner graduated from Julliard School of Music in New York City and was a clarinetist with the Houston and New Orleans Symphonies and the New York City Opera and Metropolitan Opera Orchestras in New York. Kushner brought his strong musical background and extensive experience to the Lake Charles Symphony in 1958. In 1967, he became the conductor of the Rapides Symphony in Alexandria, Louisiana, leading it from 1968 until his retirement in 2002. For 30 years, 1978 to 2008, Maestro Kushner was conductor of the Lake Charles Symphony, a role to which he brought his professional work ethic, kind spirit, laughter and incredible musical sensibility. Kushner also taught music at McNeese State University for 17 years. Under Kushner's leadership, the Southwest Louisiana musical community grew. The arts community misses Maestro Kushner dearly.
Wild Beast Feast…So…How Was It?!

(Besides Totally Rocking?)

-By Angie Manning

The Wild Beast Feast was a smashing success by all
accounts from the turnout to the decorations, the band, the chefs, the auction
items, the people, and let’s not forget the Edgemont Happy Hour Bartenders.
There was never a line at that bar, and that’s actually saying something with
the crowd! Everyone put their “all” into making the event a huge success, and
rumor has it (especially if you check www.facebook.com/lcsymphony, that
there was a frenzy with footwear fashion that night! Everyone is trying so hard
to be like Bohuslav...yet falling short! Yeah, totally check out those pix.)
Anyway, let’s hear a few comments from the peeps who attended and helped put
this thing together!

Bohuslav Rattay, Lake Charles Symphony Conductor:

“I think this
year’s Wild Beast Feast was the best so far. I mean, I only did two so far, but
this year’s definitely trumped last year's. More people, better organized and even better food.
Everyone commented on how great the bar crew was. They kept it moving and kept
the entertainment going…I think every single soul that night had a wonderful
time.”

Karen Drewett:

“The Wild Beast Feast was alive! I could feel the energy
and excitement! More people, more chefs, and the best crowd mix from -all
ages.”

Ann Barilleaux:

“The Chris Shearman Experience is awesome. The Beast
Feast has grown. I remember when it started in the VFW. All of the food is
amazing, and I ate way too much. The Edgemont Bar Crew is so much fun!”

Ashly Fruge, Symphony Director:

“Food was delicious as always. The auctions were bigger
and better than last year. The Edgemont Happy Hour Bartenders were so much fun.
They made the experience even better. The Chris Shearman Experience band played
awesome music that everyone there could relate to in some way. “

Leslie Milligan:

As for Abbie Grace’s perspective, Leslie’s daughter
commented…that the most exciting aspect of the Beast Feast for her was trying
all the new foods. She's a pretty adventurous eater and enjoyed sampling each
of the different chef's creations. Leslie shared that her family has been
enjoying the Wild Beast Feast since Abbie was a toddler when it was held at the
VFW on Country Club Road!

Chris Shearman with the Chris Shearman Experience Band:

“For my first Beast Feast, I thought the event was a
blast. Everyone there knew each other, so it was like a big extended family
event. It was a great turnout. This event was a lot of fun, and I plan to
attend every year…and hopefully play music at it!”

Cassie Price:

“This year we had an amazing response from chefs who were
very interested in joining us. There
were 24 chef teams this year. As every
year, I am so impressed by the passion that these people have for the art of
cooking! If you were able to visit with
any of them Saturday night, you could see how much pleasure they got from
talking to the patrons about their food. The delight on their faces, the energy
and the enthusiasm is infectious! It is
a very diverse group of individuals! These chefs are lawyers, nurses, bankers,
Wild Beast Feast – “True Chef Confessions!”
-By Angie Manning

I have to say that I had no idea what I was getting into when I thought about writing a blog on the chefs for the Wild Beast Feast. I thought that it’d be an innocent little story about sportsmen who like to cook after hunting – kinda thing. Oh no! These sportsmen chefs are characters, and they have a huge heart for the arts. I heard back from some teams on their secret cooking plans – namely the “Mangy Coyotes,” the “Panini Brothers” and the “We Got (pork) Butts!” So, here’s a little “meet the chefs” piece for your reading enjoyment! LOL!

Meet the Mangy Coyotes…So, the Mangy Coyotes team consists of Tad Martin, Don Walser, Leo Reddoch and Owen Thompson. Owen and Tad both work at Merrill Lynch; Leo is a surveyor and owns Unishippers, and Don is a Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer here in Lake Charles. They are all big deer, turkey and duck hunters. So, why the “Mangy Coyotes?” What’s with the name? The Mangy Coyote name comes as a reference to South Texas where Tad’s wife is from and - where he primarily deer and turkey hunts. Of course, the best part about living in Southwest Louisiana, according to Tad, is the hunting, people and spicy food! The Mangy Coyotes will be cooking up a rotisserie feral hog from South Texas and possibly some Axis or whitetail roasts on the spit. As to why Tad supports the Symphony? Well, he loves music and has really begun to appreciate classical music more since his wife is a classical pianist who teaches music and has a degree in performance piano. And I quote (from Tad) about loving classical music: “I have no choice! We are very proud to be able to support the Symphony.” (I think…behind every good turkey hunter…is a good classical pianist! Or…maybe…you are what you hunt for?!)

Meet the Panini Brothers…The Panini Brothers are made up of William Monk, Lee Boyer and Keith Duplechin. Last year, they did shrimp and tasso pizzas with caramelized onions, gruyere cheese and alfredo sauce. This year, they are cooking up two unique paninis, with an account of the history and “wildness” of each recipe. One will be a saucy “Rachel” Panini. The other will be a “Peachy Cuban.” How peachy?! The group enjoys cooking for any reason, especially a good cause like this one, and they like to sample all the other contributions too. Monk said, “One of the most enjoyable things about living in Southwest Louisiana is combining the best local ingredients with the best local recipes, and then, during the meal, talking about what we plan to cook next! And, the best meals are combined with good music and good friends.” (Well said!)

Meet the We Got (pork) Butts…Chris Price, from Lake Charles, lives in New Orleans with his wife and works in the financial services industry, but that does not stop him from participating in the Wild Beast Feast event in Lake Charles. Chris said, “I love supporting the Symphony through the Beast Feast... It's such a great event that I've been trying to get a couple groups that I'm part of in New Orleans to replicate it!” Chris is making tacos two ways - wild boar and rabbit in different preparations. He will also be serving a watermelon-strawberry agua fresca. For fun, Chris enjoys playing with his dogs Winston and Mio, playing soccer, cooking and just enjoying the music, food and culture of New Orleans.

The Wild Beast Feast will have a special appearance by
these guys! They invented the "Edgemont Beast" drink
in honor of the Wild Beast Feast. Seems that the chefs
will not be the only creative culinary force!
-by guest writer Kelley Saucier

I sat down for an impromptu lunch Friday afternoon with Luke Saucier, Dean Manning, and Mark Judson, the undeniable Mayor of Edgemont. Over some of the best taco soup I’ve ever had, we discussed Edgemont Happy Hour, Edgemont Beer Summit, funny neighborhood stories, yoga (how does that fit in?), and, of course, their guest appearance behind the bar at the Wild Beast Feast.

Everyone considers Mark Judson the Mayor of Edgemont. As Dean puts it, “If not Mark, who?” So, I asked Mark, as the official mayor, about his vision for the Edgemont Happy Hour Bar at WBF. “A true bar is a state of mind. It can only be defined in the eye of the beholder. The majority of our celebrity bar tenders’ experience has been on the other side of the bar – and it is vast experience. We will utilize that vast knowledge to create the ultimate patron experience. We have a huge assembly of talent – an all-star team of goodtime-gurus for the Beast Feast.” Joining Judson, Saucier and Manning are Steve Lang, Dallas Kingham, Denny Dennison, and Randy King. Things will be moving fast at the Edgemont Bar!

When I asked Dean about his Edgemont Bar vision he replied, “The Bar is where everyone knows your name.” The homage to the television series Cheers! is appropriate, as I think that’s what we all love about living in Lake Charles and attending fun events like WBF – this is a place where you do know just about everyone! Dean also says that he “defers to Mayor Mark in all things bar related” and will most likely be the bar-back, while the Mayor is the front man.

Luke is the Bartender-in-Chief of the Happy Hour Bar. The Edgemont Beast is the signature drink he created especially for the WBF. Although the recipe is a secret, Saucier assures us that The Beast will live up to its name. “The Beast introduces itself like a lamb, mid-conversation lights start flickering, lightning strikes, and finally, The Beast roars. Luke’s recommended consumption is “one per customer!”

In addition to The Edgemont Beast, the Happy Hour Bar Crew will be serving Casa Manana Margaritas, beer, wine, and of course various non-alcoholic soft drinks and water. Don’t miss the fun at the Lake Charles Symphony Wild Beast Feast!

Edgemont is a charming downtown Lake Charles neighborhood filled with sidewalks, azaleas, live oaks and a mixture of architectural styles. Many houses in the neighborhood were built in the 1940s and at that time it was the edge of town. Residents blend old and new together, as young families and retired citizens enjoy the drone of lawnmowers, children laughing and quiet weekends; quiet, except for that one Friday night per month when the Edgemont Happy Hour gathers at an appointed home. A 17 year tradition, the Happy Hour has created legends and built friendships that will last a lifetime.

The Chris Shearman Experience at the Wild Beast Feast, May 5!

The Chris Shearman Experience - Rocking Out!

Chris Shearman's Favorite Classical Composer?
“Bach or Nothing!”
-Story by Angie Manning & Chris Shearman

For Chris Shearman, music is the ultimate form of entertainment. For him, there's nothing better than seeing people dancing, or even just nodding their heads. He shared that times are hard right now, and music is something that can be enjoyed by everyone – everywhere – anytime. And, the Chris Shearman Experience will be playing tunes at the Wild Beast Feast coming up at the Cash and Carry Building, 801 Enterprise Blvd., on Saturday, May 5.

“The Symphony is a part of the fabric of Lake Charles. Many people don't realize that so much popular music of today is rooted in the melodies and rhythms of classical, jazz, ragtime, and the older styles of music. The Symphony is integral in maintaining the education of music's heritage and history,” said Shearman.

The members of the band include Paul Gonsoulin, Blake Thibodeaux, and often, they are joined by Joseph Darbonne.

Chris said, “We have been friends since high school and playing music together for over 10 years. We are not only close band-mates, but good friends. We spend a lot of time trying not to laugh outrageously because of how much fun we have up there. Lake Charles is a wonderful place to play live music. We do it right here in our city!”

The Chris Shearman Experience band is definitely influenced by the rock bands of today like Kings of Leon and such, but they are true to the old-school Beatles, Van Morrison, and Zeppelin. For Chris’ take on classical music and his favorite composer, he shares: “I have always been a ‘Bach or nothing’ guy. His ability to transition from major to minor and his capacity for melody have always blown me away.”

The Chris Shearman Experience cranks up at 6 p.m. at the Wild Beast Feast! Chefs and other activities will also be going on that day including live and silent auctions. The event is 5-10 p.m. at the Cash & Carry Building in Lake Charles.

(Read the story behind this amazing piece of art, and you can get a chance to see it or purchase it at the Wild Beast Feast on May 5 for the Symphony, complete with food, music and auction items!)

If you went to the last Symphony concert, you saw live art created before your eyes with the brush strokes of Vickie Singletary, a freestyle acrylic artist – along with music created before your ears by the Lake Charles Symphony. She painted the soul of Shostakovich in 22 minutes with the Lake Charles Symphony performing his own composition. The painting on stage concept is called “The Music of Your Soul.”

When I talked to Vickie about it, I have to admit, that I hoped that my soul was rainbow colored, like Shostakovich’s soul! She explained to me that everyone’s colors might be different, so his “red” might mean something different than my “red,” as colors have different meanings for different people. I found that extremely interesting. So, I asked her to send me what she painted for Shostakovich – what his colors represented.

Here is the breakdown of the color symbols for Shostakovich:

Violet
Creative force, inspiration, inspires the receptive soul to express itself in art, music, etc.

Blue
Idealism, message ideas.

Gold
Love of spirit, purposeful, meaningful.

Yellow
Mental force, confidence, curiosity, practical application of wisdom.

Orange
Emotions, independence.

Red

Passion, courage in action, and intensity brings out the revolutionary and leads into affirmative thought and action.

White

Truth, self sacrifice.

Aqua

Strong individualism, bordering on eccentricity.

Green

Balancing forces, peace, compassion and renewal.

Dark Blue

(Dripping over colors) Depression, moodiness, subduing.

And, I have to say, that after I saw (what) the colors represented, I really “felt” that whenever I saw her painting along with the music that night. It made perfect sense. Vickie normally interviews people and gets to have a “picture of the person from the inside” based on stories and conversations before attempting to paint someone’s soul. For the Shostakovich piece, it was a study on the past, history and stories from reading and talking with members of the Lake Charles Symphony. Vickie has a true gift to capture these emotions.

“In the case of Shostakovich, the composer whose music was performed by our symphony on April 14, I used available information and his life story in place of a personal interview. The abstraction was done live on stage during the concert. It was thrilling for me!” said Singletary.

The piece named "The Soul of Shostakovich" will be auctioned at Wild Beast Feast. This is a 30x40 acrylic on canvas abstract which normally sells and has sold for ten years at the price of $1,800. She is also donating for auction at the same event a lively painting named Jazzy. This features jazz instruments with a piano keyboard (in the Vickanese Style as her friends and family say). This piece is also 30x40 and sells for $1,800. Vickie shared: "This project has been fun and inspiring. It is a gift to be able to give back to others and share the blessings God has given me.”

It's a time to get to know the Symphony and hang out with other supporters of music in the area. Plus, local sportsmen will cook up their savory creations with game, pork, poultry and seafood, and you can jam to the tunes of the Chris Shearman Experience too. The band has a fun sound that's diverse, and I particularly love it when the harmonica comes into the picture!

Also, you will not want to miss out on a glamorous auction with trips, exclusive dinners, hunting trips, and more. One of the auction items will include Vickie Singletary's original painting that she created "live" during the Symphony's April performance of “Memorandoom” - featuring the composer's very soul - that of Shostakovich! (Yes, his very soul!!!) The picture to the left is of Vickie painting during the performance. It was quite fascinating.

Anyway, so the pre-feast begins at 3 p.m. You will be able to watch the chefs cooking their wild beasts. At 5 p.m., you can try new dishes from any number of chefs. Oh, and children are welcome! This year there will be a kids’ corner, where your little ones can decorate chef hats and enter into a coloring contest. There will also be delicious desserts - live and silent auctions.
