Los datos proceden de New Thorensen Chess Engine Competition, que para los entendidos viene a ser como el campeonato del mundo oficioso de máquinas (¿oficioso? ¡tiene reglas más claras que el de humanos!). Las enfrentamientos entre engines se hacen a ritmo clásico, bajo el mismo hardware y con acceso únicamente a un libro de aperturas común hasta la jugada 8 (veánse detalles técnicos).

Evidentemente, la comparativa humanos-máquina es meramente ilustrativa. Si ya es difícil estimar la fuerza de juego entre humanos con el sistema elo, entre máquinas puede serlo aún más. Aún dando por buenas las cifras ofrecidas, posiblemente pudieran mejorarse con un hardware aún mejor.

No obstante, el mayor inconveniente que le veo a esta comparativa que acabo de realizar es que el elo, tanto humano coomo de máquinas, es un coto cerrado; no nace de enfrentamientos mutuos humano-maquina y, por tanto, no creo que sea homologable. La mejor comparativa que se me ocurre es recomputar el elo de los humanos exclusivamente en años recientes para evitar la influencia de elos anteriores más bajos, de manera que quizá (y sólo quizá) los jugadores humanos mejoraran sus cifras.

Mientras tanto, aunque no sepamos con certeza cual es el mejor ente ajedrecista, creo que todos tenemos una idea bastante clara. Las máquinas son mejores, pero no conozco tantos houdinistas, stockfisheros o rybkistas como fan boys (& girls) de Carlsen, Kramnik o Aronian

Por tanto, Caïssa no era una musa “original” de la mitología grecorromana tal y como la mayoria de los aficionados piensan, porque simplemente ¡en la antigüedad clásica no se conocía el juego del ajedrez!

No obstante, con esta entrada quiero facilitaros dos enlaces sobre la temática. Tienen la particularidad de que han sido escritos casi de manera familiar, porque sus autores resultan ser marido y mujer además de padres de una niña a la que parece que le gusta el ajedrez.

El primero es “Diez razones por las que el ajedrez es bueno para tu cerebro” y está escrito por Federico Marín Bellón (@FedericoMarin en Twitter) que elabora el excelente blog Jugar con cabeza en ABC, sobre ajedrez y póquer. No es sólo blablabla sino que ofrece 10 razones que avala con estudios académicos, de ahí su interés.

El segundo es “¿Quieres que tu hijo sea listo? Apúntale a ajedrez” (título absolutamente radical y militante en el que me he inspirado para esta entrada), publicado en el blog EntreMadres, una de cuyas autoras es Cruz, mujer de Federico Marín a quién realiza una entrevista que resulta  un complemento perfecto a la primera entrada por ser la experiencia de primera mano de los autores (lo que los ingleses denominan ate your own dog food).

Simplemente por el hecho de alejarse de los típicos y tópicos informes de organismos ajedrecísticos presentados a organizaciones con competencia sobre los modelos educativos ya merece la pena destinar unos minutos a su detenida lectura.

Mucha suerte a Federico y Cruz en su aventura ajedrecista. No sé si conseguirán que Olivia sea más lista, pero sí le habrán regalado a su hija una actividad que a lo largo de su vida le reportará amistades, experiencias y muchos buenos ratos

Nivel de frikismo y dificultad: bastante elevado. La participación se encuentra abierta a todos los estudiantes de primer, segundo o tercer ciclo de la Universidad de Oviedo durante el curso 2012/13 de los títulos que tengan carácter oficial y validez en todo el territorio nacional (Ley Orgánica de Universidades 6/2001 de 21 de diciembre) así como a todo el personal docente e investigador (PDI) y personal de administración y servicios (PAS). El ganador del torneo será el Campeón de Asturias Universitario 2012/13.

1. El torneo tendrá lugar el día 24 de febrero (domingo), a partir de las 16:00 horas en la Escuela de Medicina del Deporte de la Universidad de Oviedo (Campus de los Catalanes, Instalaciones Deportivas de la Universidad de Oviedo, c/ Catedrático Jimeno s/n).
2. La competición se disputará mediante el sistema de liga a una vuelta. Si el número de participantes impidiera realizar el torneo en el horario establecido, se disputaría por sistema suizo.
3. El ritmo de juego será de 15 minutos con incremento de 10 segundos por jugada (Fischer). La reclamación de eventuales jugadas ilegales corresponderá única y exclusivamente a los contendientes de la partida. Se bonificará con un minuto al oponente por cada una de las dos primera jugadas ilegales; la realización de una tercera jugada ilegal supondrá la derrota, excepto en los casos en los que la FIDE no contemple posibilidades materiales de victoria al bando bonificado, terminando entonces el juego en tablas.
4. La organización está facultada para eliminar de la prueba a quién no comparezca en la primera ronda. De igual modo serán eliminados los participantes que falten a una partida sin justificación.
5. Los posibles empates en la clasificación final se resolverán atendiendo a los siguientes criterios, por orden de aplicación: Sonneborn Berger, número de victorias, match/liguilla a 5 minutos entre los afectados. En caso de disputa por sistema suizo el desempate se resolverá, por orden de aplicación: Bucholz-1 FIDE, Bucholz Total FIDE, Sonneborn Berger, Progresivo y sorteo.
6. Los primeros clasificados obtendrán por orden consecutivo las plazas para el Campeonato de España Universitario (CEU) que hayan quedado libres tras la realización de la selección, caso de que éste se celebrara y la Universidad de Oviedo acudiera al torneo. Eventuales bajas se cubrirían conforme al mismo criterio. En base a la reglamentación del CEU 2011 las plazas libres para clasificar serían dos (2).
7. Todo lo no previsto en estas bases se resolverá atendiendo a los criterios de la FIDE.
8. La organización está facultada para la modificación de los establecido en estas bases, especialmente en lo referente al sistema y ritmo de juego, comunicando a todos los participantes estas modificaciones en tiempo y forma adecuados.
9. El puesto final como primero, segundo o tercer clasificado se verá reconocida con 1 crédito conforme al Reglamento de Reconocimiento y Transferencia de Créditos y de Adaptación.

Las inscripciones podrán realizarse en las oficinas del Servicio de Deportes de la Universidad de Oviedo o en el correo electrónico jesgar@uniovi.es (se confirmará recepción) con plazo de finalización el jueves 21 de febrero.

Posiblemente, este sea el año en que peor porcentaje de puntos se haya hecho, aunque quizá haya influido la reducción de tableros de 8 a 6. Pero a pesar de todo, y no sin emoción en el tramo final del torneo, se ha logrado el título número 13. Aquí no somos supersticiosos, así que no vamos a decir 12+1 ni nada parecido, simplemente nos emplazamos a que el año que viene podamos hablar de 14 de 17 ¿Por qué no?

El dato negativo de la temporada lo ha puesto el equipo B que ha descendido de Segunda a Tercera División. Lamentablemente, el ajedrez es así, (siempre lo quise decir ) y merecidamente nos vamos a la Tercera. Esperemos que el próximo año no sólo estemos celebrando el título número 14 sino un nuevo ascenso a Segunda.

Mientras tanto, toca disfrutar de este nuevo título y de la marca conseguida. Seguramente muchas personas no se den cuenta del valor de lo logrado en todos estos años, y es que los ajedrecistas a veces tenemos una percepción de muy corto plazo (¡demasiado cortoplacista!). Pero pensemos en lo que habría supuesto esta marca en cualquier otra actividad deportiva. Disfrutémoslo mientras podamos.

Enhorabuena todos los que han contribuido formando parte del club a la consecución de este decimotercer título, y también a todos los que contribuyeron de cualquier manera a los doce anteriores. Y también al resto de clubes, a los que cumplieron sus objetivos y a los que no, nunca olvidemos que en esto del ajedrez, como en cualquier otra actividad no profesional, lo importante es participar y disfrutar de ello.

El estudio es el siguiente, publicado este mismo año 2012: The Benefit of Chess for the Intellectual and Socioemotional Enrichment in School Children. Seguramente muy interesante, pero trata sobre la actividad de ajedrez como actividad realizada en horario extraescolar y como alternativa al fútbol o baloncesto. En un plano menos científico, existen bastantes obras sobre la presunta aplicación del ajedrez a ámbitos de la vida, normalmente profesionales y de negocios. Como la vida imita al ajedrez de Garry Kasparov o Jaque Mate: Estrategias ganadoras del ajedrez para aplicar a tu negocio de Miguel Illescas son simplemente dos ejemplos, si bien acaban siendo simplemente colecciones de anécdotas y batallitas de Abuelo Cebolleta de las que cada cual puede sacar las conclusiones que desee; tampoco nos debe extrañar este subgénero de libros de autoayuda y gestión empresarial, basta entrar la sección correspondiente en una librería y veremos más que suficientes ediciones de El arte de la guerra de Sun Tzu dispuestas a ayudarnos a mejorar nuestra vida profesional con sus mejores ideas estratégicas …

Por tanto, no nos extrañemos de que se sobrevaloren las propiedades del ajedrez en la enseñanza. De las propuestas para introducir el ajedrez en el sistema educativo, escribí no hace mucho. Seguramente como actividad extraescolar resulte sumamente interesante, o al menos no menos que otras como fútbol o baloncesto, especialmente cuando los padres superan la identificación de actividad saludable con aquella que se realiza al aire libre, sudando y corriendo. Pero incluirla como actividad obligatoria supone:

1. Imponer obligatoriamente la actividad a los niños ¿Cuántos no la acabarán odiando?
2. Quitarle horas a alguna otra materia bastante más útil, nimiedades tales como matemáticas, lectura o escritura que resultan bastante útiles.

No cabe duda de que para todos los aficionados al ajedrez y monitores más o menos profesionales puede ser una buena noticia. Y desde luego no sería una actividad más inútil que otras muchas que actualmente ocupan un espacio en los planes de estudio (Religión …). Pero no creo que ese sea su lugar, como tampoco lo creería de otras muchas actividades.

En cualquier caso, la mejor propuesta que he leído en este debate es la que hizo vía Twitter el bloguero (y maestro, en el doble sentido) Luis Bernal: introducir el ajedrez como una unidad didáctica en Educación Física o en Ayuda al Estudio. Simplemente como una herramienta más para el desarrollo y mejora de ciertas habilidades, sin excesiva carga horaria.

La base de la estrategia de AGON parece estar en la cifra mágica de los 605 millones de jugadores, en la línea de los mil millones de jugadores deseados por el presidente de la FIDE, cifra de la que ya hablamos en esta web hace pocos meses. El argumento básico es que si existe una masa crítica suficiente de conocedores del juego, se les puede vender un producto atractivo convenientemente empaquetado y promocionado. ¿Pero qué hay de cierto en esa cifra de 605 millones? Entremos un poco más en detalle en ella.

El cálculo es fruto del trabajo de la empresa demoscópica YouGov. No emplea trabajo de campo, sino que se basa en un panel de individuos que acceden a recibir y responder encuestas por Internet a cambio de una recompensa. En consecuencia, sus costes se rebajan sustancialmente sobre el clásico estudio de cuestionario conducido por un encuestador y puede generar muestras masivas. Como en todo estudio estadístico, la fiabilidad vendrá de considerar a esa muestra como representativa de la población. Personalmente, y por mi experiencia con el trabajo con bases de datos masivas, en la mayor parte de los estudios debería ser preferible el control de la muestra por el equipo investigador sobre el tamaño de ésta; ignoro el control de YouGov sobre su panel muestral pero habrá que suponer que el trabajo se realiza de manera profesional y que un panel masivo de personas que responden encuestas por Internet es representativo de la población general. En concreto, en EE.UU. y Reino Unido YouGOv cuenta con paneles de 1.000.000 y de 350.000 individuos respectivamente, no a todos les fue enviado el cuestionario sino sólo a una fracción (no se especifica), y la tasa de respuesta habitual en este tipo de estudios es del 35-50%. Además de los países citados, también se realizó el estudio en Rusia, Alemania e India.

Según los resultados un 70% de los encuestados habían jugado al ajedrez alguna vez en su vida (aunque fuera en el colegio), y recordaban el juego con admiración aunque ya no lo practicaran; esta proporción se mantenía estable en todos los países del estudio. Un porcentaje del 12% de los encuestados en el Reino Unido jugaban actualmente al ajedrez (al menos una vez en el último año), 15% en EE.UU., 23% en Alemania, 43% en Rusia y 70% en India. En el caso de los indios, el porcentaje se corresponde con el segmento de la población considerado ABC1 en estudios de marketing, es decir, clase social media-alta y superiores, así que no parece que el estudio pueda concluir que el ajedrez es un deporte de pobres. Más de la mitad de estos jugadores habituales de los cinco países del estudio pertenecen al segmento de edad entre 18 y 34 años (no se especifica sexo ¿hombres principalmente?).

Respecto a las características que identificaban con el ajedrez, tanto aquellos que declaraban ser jugadores como aquellos que no identificaban el ajedrez en mayor grado que otros juegos o deportes con atributos como inteligencia, sofisticación, estrategia, perfección y complejidad, algo que en términos de marketing se enuncia como “el ajedrez es de pensadores y triunfadores”. Además, los jugadores de ajedrez parece que se difenciaban sustancialmente de aquellos que no jugaban y eran consumidores de medios escritos -especializados y generalistas- entre 2,5 y 5 veces más.

Respecto al nivel socioeconómico, y a pesar de que debido a sus escasas barreras de entrada el juego se practica en todo el espectro socieconómico, el 78% de los jugadores en EE.UU. tenían estudios universitarios, el 21% de los jugadores pertenecían a hogares con renta superior a los 120.000 dólares (recordemos, jugador se corresponde con aquel individuo que en el último año ha jugado al menos una partida, aunque sea por Internet). La probabilidad de que un jugador gastara en un bien de lujo (coches, joyas, relojes, alcohol de marca, compras on-line) era entre un 40-100% superior a un no jugador; con estos datos sin duda el jugador de ajedrez resulta ser bastante consumista.

En resumen, para AGON existe un segmento de población que tiene interés en el ajedrez, no necesariamente en jugar pero sí en sentirse identificado, y con un poder adquisitivo considerable. Uniendo dinero con deseos, AGON quiere explotar publicitariamente los grandes eventos del ajedrez mundial. E indirectamente, ha facilitado los mercados objetivo: EE.UU., UK, Alemania, Rusia e India, y todos aquellos que se puedan considerar análogos. Por medio de esta analogía es por lo que parece que se llega a la cifra de 605 millones, aunque me plantea dudas si se llega a ella en base a la población mundial o en base a países análogos (total de la Unión Européa, Canadá … China). En cualquier caso, es el dinero de AGON y supongo que no tienen interés en mentirse a sí mismos. Claramente, para cumplir sus objetivos necesitan sacar los grandes eventos de ajedrez del Caúcaso y llevarlos a países de mayor poder adquisitivo, nadie se va a sentir identificado con una actividad que se lleva a cabo en esas zonas geográficas, no al menos en los términos en que ese informe enuncia. Porque no lo olvidemos, todas estas cifras no hablan realmente de como desarrollar el ajedrez: hablan de cómo ganar dinero con la explotación comercial del ajedrez (aunque ambas cosas pudieran ir de la mano).
