What was it in Noah's day that caused such an outpouring of evil to cover the earth? Note it and note it well: it was their marriage discipline, their disregard of proper family relations, their gluttony and their drunkenness--all of which led to wars and carnality and corruption.

When Noah cried repentance to the people, they said: "Behold, we are the sons of God"--they claimed for themselves the blessings of true religion, thought they lived after the manner of the world--"have we not taken unto ourselves the daughters of men?" Men were marrying out of the Church because they preferred a lewd and lascivious way of life rather than the one decreed in proper matrimony. "And are we not eating and drinking, and marrying and giving in marriage?" Theirs was a life of gluttony and drunkenness. "And our wives bear unto us children, and the same are mighty men, which are like unto men of old, men of great renown" (see Moses 8:21).

Is it any different today? Never in the entire history of the world has there ever been such an assault on the family unit as there is now. In some nations women work and the state rears their children. Women are handed rifles and taught the ways of war, and they are employed alongside men in drudgery and labor that destroys feminine sensitivities. Homosexuality is becoming too common, and none of it should be accepted. Millions of couples live together in sin. Death-dealing abortions have legal approval. Courses given in public schools encourage and approve immoral practices. Prostitution is legal in some jurisdictions, or not controlled in others.

All this and all else prevailing in our social structure make us wonder how much worse things must become before the burning fires of destruction shall cover the earth.

Truly, "by the word of God," the earth in Noah's day was "overflowed with water," and its inhabitan6ts "perished". And so, the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men" (2 Peter 3:5-7).

So says the holy word, and so shall it be.

God's Reason for Natural Disasters

The Earth Itself Cries: Why So Many Natural Disasters?

Due to recent events over the past couple of years, does it seem like there are more natural disasters occurring? Does God not love his children that he seemingly unnecessarily causes them harm?

This earth was created for us, to be our abiding place during a mortal probation. It was made in such a way as to best serve our needs. The Lord had power to arrange the earth, the elements, and all created things in the way that would best serve man, his crowning creation. Why did he make provision for natural disasters? What purpose is served by earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions, storms, tempests, heat waves that burn the crops of men, and cold waves that freeze the fruits of the earth? These have all been woven into the continuing existence of our earth, an earth designed to serve us. Why?

It seems clear that we are here in mortality to gain experiences that could not be gained in any other way. We need to combat and overcome the forces of nature. We must face up to the sorrows and vicissitudes of mortality if we are to appreciate the eternal joys of immortality. And in addition, the disasters of earth--controlled as they are in the infinite wisdom of the Lord who knoweth all things--are used by him to temper and train us. He uses natural disasters to bring to us the conscious realization that we are dependent up a Supreme Being for all things. Does that sound familiar with the earthquake in Haiti, or Hurricane Katrina?

He uses natural disasters as a means of judgment to punish us for evil deeds done in the flesh. He also uses them to humble us so that perchance we will repent and live as he would have us live.

"Except the Lord doth chasten his people with many afflictions, yea, except he doth visit them with death and with terror, and with famine and with all manner of pestilence, they will not remember Him." ~Helaman 12:3
And all of this has particular application in this day of wickedness when the world is being prepared to receive its rightful King.
Most of the time, we are told that it is given to newly baptized members. We are also told the Holy Ghost's role is to give peace, comfort, and guidance. And while the common stories of people praying to find a lost item are very real, there is so much more that the Holy Ghost has to offer.

There are many names given for the Holy Ghost including Comforter, Holy Spirit of Promise, Promise of Eternal Life, Spirit of Truth, Light of Truth, Light of Christ, and many more. Let me emphasize two of these names: Spirit of Truth and Promise of Eternal Life.

When I was younger, I would see on television religions where the preacher would claim and praise the fact that they had the Holy Ghost to guide them. They had Him in them. While it was somewhat comical, it caused reflection. How can they claim to have the Power of the Holy Ghost? Was it not only given to baptized members of the LDS Church? After some thought I realized that what they were feeling was His presence, or rather the Spirit of Truth. It is possible for them to feel the Holy Ghost because we are all born with the Light of Christ, sometimes referred to as our conscience. Perhaps those people I saw on television were receiving that feeling because they had some of the truths. But they do not have all the gospel doctrines. The Holy Ghost--called the Spirit of Truth--was manifesting to them that particular doctrine was true. Thus, the Holy Ghost helps all people to know the difference between God's truths and Satan's neverending lies.

The Holy Ghost is there as a constant companion to us if we are living good lives and are worthy for his presence. Through him, we can feel the presence of Christ and our Heavenly Father. Steps to becoming perfect like our Father in Heaven can be summarized in seven steps (which are to be understood to include faith, repentance, baptism, and Laying on of Hands). We must first (1) have the Light of Christ. This is given to every person who is born on the earth, and is known as our conscience. When you begin to see how Christ can help you in your life--like the the feelings church investigators often have--you are using (2) the Power of the Holy Ghost. It is a testimony of the truth of Christ's Everlasting Gospel, but is only temporary. When a person is baptized they are afterwards given (3) the Gift of the Holy Ghost. When living righteously, He is a constant Comforter who gives you guidance and peace that is aligned with God's will. Throughout our lives we must constantly be aware of our actions and repent of wrong doings. However, this is not a "repent now" attitude, or repenting just to get that sin out of our life. We must (4) become sanctified with Baptism by Fire through the sacrament's power. This is described as a "mighty change of heart", or to be "born again". The sacrament plays an important role by acting as a weekly recleansing of sins we have repented of. The sacrament is an act, whereas sanctification is a process that takes time. Sanctification comes when we begin to love the things we hated, and hate the things we once loved. You must actively make an effort to become better, not just act better. Similar to making a candle, you must constantly be strong--meaning dip and re-dip your candle into the wax, ultimately created a useful candle. For our spiritual cleansing, it takes smalls steps to become better--line upon line, precept upon precept.

In Omni 1:26, we are counseled to (5) "endure to the end". But what does that really mean? Nephi, in his vision of the Tree of Life, taught that the way to eternal life is by the straight and narrow path. That is how we endure to the end. Enduring to the end is a continuous loop coinciding with the previous step of getting Baptized by Fire. We must continue to have that mighty change of heart and desire to align our will with God's will through actions, thoughts, and desires.

Although not often talked about (because church members as a whole are not ready), you can (6) receive the confirmation that your exaltation in the highest degree of the Celestial Kingdom is guaranteed. This is called our Calling and Election. Once we have endured to the end for a sufficient length of time, and have a mighty change of heart, you have the chance to get a Second Comforter: Jesus Christ. The scriptures are filled with accounts of individuals who have beheld the face of God. This privilege is in no way reserved only for prophets. The Lord has promised, "It shall come to pass that every soul who forsaketh his sins and cometh unto me, and calleth on my name, and obeyeth my voice, and keepeth my commandments, shall see my face and know that I am." (D&C 93:1; John 14:21.) This privilege is something for which the Lord tells us to strive: "Seek the face of the Lord always, that in patience ye may possess your souls, and ye shall have eternal life." (D&C 101:38.)

How do we get our Calling and Election? On May 17th, 1843, it was revealed to Joseph Smith that "the more sure word of prophecy means a man’s knowing that he is sealed up unto eternal life, by revelation and the spirit of prophecy, through the power of the Holy Priesthood." (D&C 131:5) So you must have it manifested to you by the Spirit of Prophecy (the Holy Ghost), and you must use the power that comes from the Holy Priesthood. But this eternal guarantee will come to us when God knows we are ready. "And if your eye be single to my glory, your whole bodies shall be filled with light, and there shall be no darkness in you; and that body which is filled with light comprehendeth all things. Therefore, sanctify yourselves that your minds become single to God, and the days will come that you shall see him; for he will unveil his face unto you, and it shall be in his own time, and in his own way, and according to his own will." (D&C 88:67-68)

In conclusion, the Holy Ghost is a gift from God given to us to aid us in receiving the greatest gift of all--eternal life and exaltation. Having the knowledge you now learned, read John 17 and you will gain new insights. The fourth article of faith states, "We believe in the first principles of the gospel..." Those are the first principles, not only principles. That means we have must to learn. Until we obtain our Calling and Election, there is only so much doctrine we can learn on our own. "Behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and there will be no more doctrine given until after he shall manifest himself unto you in the flesh. And when he shall manifest himself unto you in the flesh, the things which he shall say unto you shall ye observe to do." (2 Nephi 32:6) What will Christ teach you? He will teach you about your eternity. In time, you will (7) be exalted, and become perfect even as our Father in Heaven is perfect--of Him, in Him, and through Him we can have the fullness of His power and love. How merciful is our God who loveth his children on a small earth far away that I testify He created.

Rocket of the Priesthood

The priesthood is like a rocket ship's flames. It has so much power and potential that is often not utilized. Priesthood members of the church often go up and say "Wow, look! I can light a candle using this rocket's flame. We can light candles! The room can get hotter with these!"

Yes, worthy members can use the priesthood and light their own "candles". Collectively, the heat and light can become vast as a church. Much goodness can be done in this state. But what they must remember is that the rocket's flame is far more powerful. Each person has the potential to accept more power and responsibility, far more than they do now--so much that their wimpy little candles would be melted away and they themselves could obtain the great power equal to the rocket's flame of eternal priesthood power.
Yesterday, I woke up and looked at my schedule for the day. 2 Papers due, one of which I hadn't started. A music theory assignment, 2 hours of oboe practice to get in, a Sight Singing Test and eight hours of classes, one of which I was supose to perform an Oboe Solo in. I thought, there is no way you can do all of this today. It's just not going to happen. I prayed for the Lords help, well, more like pleaded for it. Then set about the day. It was amazing how everything fell into place. I finished my test just in time to do some homework before my first class and my second class started 10 minutes late giving me time to finish the homework. I wrote the paper in an hour and a half and then spend 1/2 hr practicing. After classes practiced more, and everything worked out. Heavenly Father was there helping me stay calmed and focousd throught the whole day. I realize that in terms of eternity and importance, my worries about a busy day were nothing. But for me, I was really concerned about everything. Heavenly Father, although busy with helping everyone else in the world, listening to prayers and helping those with real seriouse problems and life and death situations, still found the time and ability to help me. It just reminds me of how much he truly does love each one of us. He really does care and will help us with everything we need. I love him so much and am so thankful for all he has done for me. I just wanted to say that. :D

Symbols in the Temple

Many times we encounter symbols. They are everywhere in the world. But most importantly, and often mysteriously, symbols exist in the church. The sacrament shows Christ's death and resurrection. The cloth on the sacrament table represents His victory over temporal existence. The hierarchy of church leadership shows that order is maintained and constantly checking each other. There is an order in all things--all things temporally, all things spiritually, all things eternally, and all things in God's wisdom.

In the temple we have the chance to see and experience extraordinary things. Ordinances and covenants made in the temple are sacred. They are sacred because they deal with personal progress and eternal existence. The temple is full of symbolic things with symbolic meanings. Many of these can be connected with stories and scriptures we already know, such as the Tree of Life and the temple during Moses's time.

Going to the temple over and over may seem like nothing new is gained. Everything is the same and you do and hear the same things each time. But no matter the time, you can always learn something new. If you go but don't understand the symbols, then examine your life. Most often you are doing the best you can. (You have a temple recommend, and that already shows your worthiness and willingness to learn and progress to exaltation.) Keep doing what you have always been taught. Pay your tithing, go to church, magnify your church calling, sustain and uphold church leaders, honor your family, and enjoy life. But most of all--pray, read the scriptures, and be patient. The scriptures are packed full of explanations and descriptions of symbols.

Why does God teach in symbols? Why did Christ teach in parables? Almost always, you must think and study to understand the meaning of the symbol or parable. It is not always black and white, but gray. However, the meanings become glaringly black and white once you understand the message. These methods of teachings reiterate the fact of God's love and mercy for his children. He does not give us more than we are able to comprehend. Thus, that is why some people get more out of church meetings, scriptures study, and temple attendance. The deeper meaning is there for when God knows--in his wisdom and timing-- the time is best for you. But just because you don't understand Isaiah or particular symbols does not mean it is worthless or you are foolish. It only means that the stage of your progression is such that you will learn different things at different times. Be prepared at all times with an open mind and open heart. There will come times when an epiphany strikes--even if you've heard, read, or seen the same thing numerous times. Allow the Holy Ghost to teach you, and again, be patient.

The temple is a wonderful sanctuary for mortals. It is where we learn how to become like God and how we can live with our families forever, even after death. No matter where you are, first learn the literal symbols. Then, through study, learn the symbolic symbols. In turn you will gain confidence, wisdom, patience, compassion, and self-confidence while learning about God and yourself.

--from pi.rg.9.22.08.reliA211

Law of Moses VS Law of Christ

The Law of Moses and the Law of Christ have been given at different times through Christ, but had different purposes.

The Israelites were wandering through the wilderness for forty years. It was a long journey and led them in circles, both literally and spiritually. At one point, God gave Moses what we call "the higher law", but they were not ready for it. Because of their disobedience, they were given a lesser law called the Law of Moses. It was a series of tedious tasks and rules for them to follow and they were direct instructions on day-to-day activities. It was the idea of going from behavior to principle because if you practice the endless actions, you will eventually "get" the principles trying to be taught. Underlying all these rules were wonderful doctrines, the biggest ones being eternal covenants and the law of consecration.

On the other hand, we have what is called the Law of Christ. It is the opposite effect of the Law of Moses. Instead of a direct commandment, a principle is given. Often Christ taught these principles in parables while in His mortal ministry. In our lives, we are given these principles which can guide our behavior--behavior in harmony with God's teachings.

Nowadays, revelation and guidance in the church comes in forms of both "Law of Moses" and "Law of Christ" commandments. Take for instance caffeine. Although the Lord told us of many substances to avoid specifically, caffeine was not mentioned. This has long since been a debatable topic in the church. Why? Because people just want it told to them. But instead, God has given us a "Law of Christ", meaning we were given the law of the Word of Wisdom, and are then governed by that principle. Our behavior regarding caffeine comes from that principle.

On the other hand, Gordon B. Hinckley told all young women that one pair of earrings are sufficient enough. Another example is gambling, pornography, and abuse. These are principles intended to guide our behavior. It does not say "be nice", but do not look at degrading images or do not gamble. Often, and sadly, both "Law of Moses" and "Law of Christ" commandments are rationalized by church members. But no matter what excuses are made, the laws that God gives us are for our benefit. Instead of trying to find ways around them, use them as catalysts to let yourself grow exponentially to a higher spiritual level.

--obtained from pi.rg.9.8.08.reli211

Christ is the Father of Creation & Father of our Spiritual Rebirth

Today in class we talked about the many titles told of for Christ. Jesus Christ has many titles for his name. Two of them are Father of Creation and Father of our Spiritual Rebirth.

Father of our Creation describes the earth where we live. Christ created earth, but so did God and a host of others. It can be compared to with Brigham Young creating BYU. Does that mean he came back from the dead and somehow built the Spencer W. Kimball Tower? No. There were many other people involved in the creation of this university. So it is with the earth. We only say that Christ and God created the earth because they were at the head of it. They were in charge.

Father of our Spiritual Rebirth is a comfort to us each day. This title shows how we can endure to the end. Christ is part of our spiritual rebirth. Before the pre-existence, we grew spiritually and eventually grew enough that our spiritual body was aligned perfectly with the will of our Father (God). Now, on earth, Christ is here to "fulfill all righteousness" by allowing himself to be a catalyst to our spiritual growth and eventual exaltation. Without a physical and biological father, we would not be able to get a body. So without a spiritual father, so to speak, we would not be able to be re-born spiritually and become like a child. That is why we need Christ. He is the center of everything. He came in the meridian of time--not necessarily in the meridian of man's time, but may mean he is the meridian, or center, of all time and for all of us.

--obtained from pi.rg.9.15.08.reliA211

Levels of Scripture Study

There are three levels of scripture study. If I believe anything that God has ever said about himself, and anything pertaining to the creation and organization of man upon the earth, I must believe that Deity consists of man and woman. Now this is simplifying it down to our understanding, and the great Christian world will be ready to open their mouths and cry, "Blasphemy! Sacrilege!" Open wide their eyes and wide their mouths in the utmost astonishment. What! God a man and woman? The Shakers say he was, and Ann Lee says, "Christ came in the form of a man in the first place, and now comes in the form of a woman," and she was that form.

Then these Christians‑‑they say he has no form, neither body, parts nor passions. One party says he is a man, and the other says he is a woman. I say he is both. How do you know? I only repeat what he says of himself; that he created man in the image of God, male and female created he them, and he called their name Adam, which signifies in Hebrew, the first man. So that the beings we call Adam and Eve were the first man placed here on this earth, and their name was Adam, and they were the express image of God. Now, if anybody is disposed to say that the woman is in the likeness of God and that the man was not, and if vice versa, I say you are both wrong, or else God has not told us the truth.

I sometimes illustrate this matter by taking up a pair of shears, if I have one, but then you all know they are composed of two halves, but they are necessarily parts, one of another, and to perform their work for each other, as designed, they belong together, and neither one of them is fitted for the accomplishment of their works alone. And for this reason says St. Paul, "the man is not without the woman, nor the woman without the man in the Lord." In other words, there can be no God except he is composed of the man and woman united, and there is not in all the eternities that exist, nor ever will be, a God in any other way. I have another description: There never was a God, and there never will be in all eternities, except they are made of these two component parts; a man and a woman; the male and the female.
---Obtained by Randy Bott, BYU Religion Professor

300 Things a Mission Should Accomplish

1. Admit to yourself that you are struggling.
Get out of bed and explain how you are feeling to Heavenly Father
Serve your companion. Polish his shoes, iron her dress, fix breakfast--unless that could be misinterpreted as a hostile gesture.
Study with companion and alone
Get out on time and stay out until the prescribed time to come in.
Talk to everybody you meet.
Teach, testify, talk gospel.

Pres. Ezra Taft Benson (Teachings p. 200)
One of the greatest secrets of missionary work is work. If a missionary works, he will get the Spirit; if he gets the Spirit, he will teach by the Spirit; and if he teaches by the Spirit, he will touch the hearts of the people; and he will be happy. There will be no homesickness, no worrying about families, for all time and talents and interests are centered on the work of the ministry. That’s the secret-- work, work, work. There is no satisfactory substitute, especially in missionary work.

When you come back in, you’ll discover that 90% of your homesickness is gone.

Will it ever come back?
It could. Birthdays, family celebration times, deaths in the family, special events like marriages, baptisms, etc. Break-up with girl/boy friend, particularly difficult companion or area.

Reverse homesickness--no real cure.
Starts about six months before end of mission.
Time goes 10 times as fast as first part
Know you’ll never be with your beloved people again
Young missionaries envy you and want to trade places with you
Members claim you’ll forget them and never write-- don’t make promises you can’t keep.
Some even threaten the Mission President. It won’t work.
Last day comes and you are sure you will die-- you won’t.

If you allow your mission to go through you as well as you going through your mission, you will never lose your love for the people and the country. How many missionaries have you heard say their’s was the best mission in the whole world? They are right all of them.
---Randy Bott, BYU Religion Professor

Dealing With Flashbacks with old sins

1. What is a flashback? Many times when we were dumb and young we thought we could get away with things. Each bad thought, foolish act, careless word gave a bullet to Satan who would eventually use them against us.
A. we normally didn’t think about the long range effects of our foolishness so now we must deal with the problem.
B. President Spencer W. Kimball’s statement on becoming perfect.
Spencer W. Kimball ABe Ye Therefore Perfect pp. 241-242 (Speeches of the Year, BYU 1974)
To be perfect, then, one must begin early in his life. He or she must become the perfect husband, the perfect wife, the perfect father, the perfect mother, the perfect leader, and the perfect follower. One’s marriage must be perfectly performed and perfectly kept on a hallowed plane. One must keep his life circumspect. Each person must keep himself clean and free from lusts. He must shun ugly, polluted thoughts and acts as he would an enemy. Pornographic and erotic stories and pictures are worse than polluted food. Shun them. The body has power to rid itself of sickening food. That person who entertains filthy stories or pornographic pictures and literature records them in his marvelous human computer, the brain, which can’t forget this filth. Once recorded, it will always remain there, subject to recall--filthy images.

As we have stated before, the way to perfection seems to be a changing of one’s life--to substitute the good for the evil in every case. Changes can come best if we take them item at a time. For instance, it’s not difficult to be perfect in tithe paying, for if one pays one-tenth of his income annually, he is perfect in that respect. It is not difficult to become perfect in avoiding a swearing habit, for it one locks his mouth against all words of cursing, he is en route to perfection in that matter. If one studies the scriptures with all reasonable devotion, he has approached perfection in that matter also.
C. They will likely come at the most inconvenient times (i.e. baptismal experience where 18 year old girl was viewed as centerfold picture Elder had looked at).
D. What can be done? Not too much about erasing the thoughts. A lot can be done about how to approach the situation.

1. AThank you Satan for reminding me what a wonderful blessing the Atonement is and how badly people out there need it in their lives. I’m going to redouble my efforts to spread the Agood news of the gospel to everyone I can.
2. Every time a flashback occurs, stop, read, and ponder the promises associated with the Atonement.
3. Put your life in proper perspective. Likely your transgressions don’t come anywhere near the problems your investigators have experienced. Use your experience with the bitterness of sin to gain greater empathy with those you teach.
4. Pray fervently for relief from the torment (if not from the flashback itself)-- See Alma 36:18-19.
5. Avoid places which trigger the memories.
6. Avoid, where possible, people who were involved in the problems that result in the flashbacks. (JST Matthew 16:26, see footnote to Matthew 16:24)
7. Don’t re-plow the ground by thinking about, talking about, re-experiencing the transgression. Block it from your mind completely and focus on something of your choosing.
8. Get a priesthood blessing for additional help.
9. Remember the point under AUsing Satan against Satan-- have a plan A-E to take the advantage away from Satan. Don’t either think about or think about not thinking about the transgression.
10. Focus your mind on eternal goals and blessings. James 4:7-Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Remember: Unless Satan is successful in getting you to feel unworthy to serve, he knows you will be and effective instrument in God’s hands in winning people away from his kingdom. You need to expect that he will use every imaginable tactic to try to destroy you.
---Randy Bott, BYU Religion Professor

Kindergarten Decisions

1. What is a kindergarten decision? One that is simple, easy to make not necessarily easy to keep.

2. They constitute the foundation for a successful mission, marriage, and life.

3. Only make them once and then spend the rest of your time and efforts in keeping your commitment.

4. What are some of the kindergarten decisions which contribute to a successful mission:
a. Keep all mission rules
b. Get up on time and out on time
c. Don’t stay longer than 20 minutes at a members house when getting a referral or a drink of water; not longer than 1 2 hours for a dinner appointment with an investigator.
d. Write President’s letters and letters home every week.
e. Don’t develop a false allegiance to companions.
f. Keep focused on mission.

The list could and should be enlarged according to your mission and your knowledge about what is necessary to hedge up Satan’s most effectively used tactics against you.

5. So you get the drift, let’s list some kindergarten decisions which would contribute to a successful marriage:
a. Don’t flirt with anyone other than your husband/wife after marriage.
b. Think before you speak-- don’t say things that will weaken your relationship even if they are true.
c. Don’t discuss private relationships of your marriage with others.
d. Always begin and end the day with couple prayer
e. Center your lives around Christ and His gospel.
f. Identify problems while they are small and use the gospel to solve them.

You can see that the list can and should be longer and more specific to your relationship. One of the great lessons of life that I have learned is that we don’t fight over things we agree upon. We just don’t know we disagree. Talk to understanding (i.e. talk-a-thon).

6. List a few kindergarten decisions which will make for Celestial living in a Telestial world.
a. Treat everyone with respect and as Christlike as you know how.
b. Don’t let others determine how you act or react.
c. Use the question What would Jesus do? as a measuring stick for your actions.
d. Do everything with eternity in mind.
e. Follow the counsel of the living prophets and the scriptures.
f. Spend some time every day in meditation and pondering to keep life in eternal perspective.
g. Be totally involved in the Church, using repentance daily to stay on the straight and narrow path.
Again, your success in life will depend to a large degree on how seriously you take the idea of making kindergarten decisions and how much energy you spend in following through on them.

7. Satan would have you believe that you can’t control your life--that is why he is called a A liar from the very beginning. (D&C 93:25).

8. Pick on the Goliath’s in your life first. Something you know you must change before you are welcome in the Celestial kingdom. Work on it consciously, asking for Divine assistance (see Ether 12:27).
a. Make a game of overcoming problems (i.e. short temper, sulking, being obnoxious, etc).
b. Recognize and reward mini-successes. (i.e. the Lord called every step good in the creation although none were complete until the very end when He called it Avery good).
c. Refuse to get discouraged when you suffer setbacks. (i.e. masturbation by a missionary-- how long since the last problem? A year. How long had you gone before your mission? Max was a week. Look at the progress. Let’s see if you can duplicate your last record and extend it!)
d. Keep an eternally optimistic outlook-- Satan can’t tolerate optimism.
e. Aim for perfection-- the top of the Spiritual mountain. If you fall short, you are infinitely higher than if you had refused to climb at all.
f. Remember D&C 76:60- speaking of those in the Celestial Kingdom-- They shall overcome all things.
---Randy Bott, BYU Religion Professor
