Reviewed by Dayna Davis, LDSFiles.com Staff Writer

The Woman at the Well by Emily Freeman. Illustrated by Simon Dewey. Published by Deseret Book.

Retail Price: $19.95
Available here

This is a beautifully illustrated book that tells the story of the woman who meets Jesus at the well and is taught about living water. The author makes the woman come to life, in such a way that we can all see ourselves in her. Simon Dewey manages to convey emotion and realism that compliment the story through his paintings. It is a lovely way to teach this Bible story to children and adults alike.

Reviewed by Dayna Davis, LDSFiles.com Staff Writer

Eddie Fantastic by Chris Heimerdinger. Published by Covenant Communications, Inc.

Retail Price: $15.95
Available here

"Eddie Fanta is a fifteen-year-old boy entangled in tragic secrets which leave him questioning life, questioning justice, and questioning God. Louis Kosserinski is a savagely scarred and crippled old man who has remained in utter seclusion for the last forty years.

Mysterious circumstances bring these two characters face to face where Eddie discovers the old man's unprecedented genius for electronics and microcircuitry — a genius which has spawned a series of inventions which could change the universe forever! Although Eddie sees Louis' inventions as an opportunity to improve an imperfect world, he ends up wreaking havoc at every hair-raising turn."

Chris Heimerdinger is the author of the "Tennis Shoes Among the Nephites" series. I thoroughly enjoy everything that he has written, and I think I've read most of it. However, 'Eddie Fantastic' is geared more toward technology and science fiction than any of his other books, in my opinion. I thought it was interesting, but it didn't appeal to the girl in me very much. There were many details that I didn't understand, and concepts that went a bit over my head. But I'm sure that my nephews, son and brothers would have loved this book. My recommendation is that it will appeal most to boys, thirteen years old and up.

Reviewed by Dayna Davis, LDSFiles.com Staff Writer

Fool Me Twice by Stephanie Black. Published by Covenant Communications, Inc.

Retail Price: $15.95
Available here

Megan O'Connor will do about anything to make her twin sister, Kristen, happy. This time Kristen has asked Megan to pretend to be her, so that she can keep a job and still go on a vacation that she has wanted to go on. Kristen promises that they will both be rich when they are done. But Megan has second thoughts when she meets and becomes friends with some of the people that believe she is Kristen. As time goes on, she learns she has more to worry about then she thought.

'Fool Me Twice' is a suspenseful, mystery story that keeps you guessing until the end. I found it interesting the things that Megan would do to keep both Kristen and her mother happy. It made me wonder if I become someone I'm not in order to keep the peace? I really liked the ending. I found it to be realistic to the storyline and natural consequences to choices that were made in the book. I thought it was a very good book.

It follows the lives of three close friends and their families, through the various challenges that come their way.

This series helps us see life through the eyes of three entirely different women. I believe that is the whole purpose of this book. By learning to empathize and try to understand other people's trials, we develop compassion and knowledge that helps us in our own lives. It helps us with insights into our own problems and gives us solutions and direction to overcome our own issues. If you enjoy books that have a purely human interest angle, you will like these.

But when repetitive nightmares that have plagued her throughout her life, begin again, it's hard for her to ignore. She decides to move into the family estate she has inherited, to have a change of scene. But that move brings up more mysteries than those she left behind and this time she is determined to confront them.

This book struck me as a genuine who-dun-it type mystery. I liked the various twists and turns that all the characters took, and the author did a good job making it an interesting story. There were a few loose ends that I felt could have been wrapped up a little better, but they really weren't essential to the plot. It was an enjoyable read. It is not scary at all and I would recommend it for all ages from twelve years old and up.

Maintaining a positive attitude in your classroom --
both you and your students -- is important.

Here's a great quotation from Elder Richard G. Scott's
14 August 2008 Commencement Address at Brigham Young
University:

"Radiate a positive attitude. Let your attitude be that
of continuing happiness. The challenges you face, the
growth experiences you encounter, should be like
temporary scenes played out on the stage of continuing
peace and happiness. Don't become so absorbed in a
single event that you can't think of anything else.
Challenges are not intended to be the substance of
life. It is by understanding and obeying the teachings
of God that your life will fulfill its glorious purpose.
That perspective keeps challenges confined to their
proper place -- stepping stones to further growth and
attainment. Life should and can be wondrously
 beautiful."

Best wishes,

Ken

www.KenAlford.com

Reviewed by Dayna Davis, LDSFiles.com Staff Writer

Max and the Gatekeeper by James Todd Cochrane. Published by Dark Moon Publishing Inc.

Retail Price: $9.99
Available here

Max believes it will be a long, boring summer at his grandfather’s house, away from his mother and all of his friends. A strange encounter on the bus makes him realize, right away, that this will not be the dull summer he expects it to be. As Max gets to know his grandfather, he learns that there is a lot more to the world than he realized.

This is a great new book by a first time author! I really liked it. It was fun, interesting, clear, consistent, but not predictable.

One of my pet peeves is when an author introduces characters or situations but then doesn't explain them or wrap them up. Everything in 'Max' made sense. It had no loose ends at all, except for the openness of the ending - but that makes sense, considering there is a new book coming out. It was easy to read and the characters were quite intriguing. It kept me interested and I DIDN'T read the ending first. That by itself is pretty big. I get bored easily and if that starts to happen, I read the ending to know what is coming so that I don't have to finish it all. ‘Max and the Gatekeeper’ is a magical adventure. It’s family friendly and entertaining for all ages. I would especially recommend it for those 8 years old and up.

For example, from the Main Menu, select the "Jesus Christ and His Gospel" item, and then the "Images of Salvation" menu item. You can read detailed explanations and information about several great New Testament works of art.

The "Joseph Smith and the Scriptures" menu option includes the text of the complete Joseph Smith Translation, and sections are being added to include comments made by Joseph Smith about various passages in the Bible.

In addition to resource information about each of the Standard Works, there is a growing selection of church history information, as well. There is even an "On This Day in Church History" database -- that you can search by date or by keyword. (I learned, for example, that Elder Dallin H. Oaks and I were born on the same day and month.)

Oh...
And did I mention that it a tri-lingual website? In addition to English, materials are also available in Spanish and Portuguese.

I have no doubt that this website will continue to grow in usefulness in the future.

Best wishes,

Ken

www.KenAlford.com
ScriptureMastery@KenAlford.com

Preparing Glue-Ins

I like to share quotations, in the form of glue-ins, with students during class.

I find that glue-ins are the most useful to students when they have been linked to a specific scripture and then are glued into their scriptures near the linked verses.

Summer is a great time to prepare many of the glue-ins that you plan to distribute throughout the Seminary year. You can photocopy, cut, store the glue-ins. (Make two extra copies of each glue-in so you can easily handle any new students). Then annotate your lesson manual (for example, "Glue-In for James 2:17-18") so that you will remember to share your glue-ins during the appropriate lessons.

Additional information about glue-ins can be found in the online [Seminary-Notes] Newsletter Archive:

17 August 2003

30 December 2001

To possibly save your some lesson preparation time...

Please note that hundreds of New Testament glue-ins (each linked to a New Testament scripture) are available in the New Testament Seminary Scripture Mastery Resource Volume 1 and Volume 2 packets. The Table of Contents in both volumes list the specific lessons when the glue-ins in that volume can be given to students. (The lesson handouts from both volumes have been formatted so that you can easily turn them into glue-ins, if desired.)

Best wishes,

Ken

www.KenAlford.com
ScriptureMastery@KenAlford.com

Matthews (who was serving as the dean of Religious Instruction), shared a comment written in 1969 by Elder Hugh B. Brown, one of the Twelve Apostles:

I am impressed with the testimony of a man who can stand and say he knows the gospel is true. What I would like to ask is, "But, sir, do you know the gospel?" I say it is one thing to know the gospel is true, and it is another thing to know what the gospel is.

Mere testimony can be gained with but perfunctory knowledge of the Church and its teachings, as evidenced by the hundreds who are now coming into the Church with but bare acquaintanceship. But to retain a testimony, to be of service in building the Lord's kingdom, requires a serious study of the gospel and knowing what it is.

Our responsibility this coming year is to help our students better learn and live the gospel -- not just to know that the gospel is true.
Best wishes,

Ken

www.KenAlford.com
ScriptureMastery@KenAlford.com

Birthday Card Ideas (part 1)

.

[Seminary-Notes]
====================================
FOR YOUR INFORMATION...
====================================

Summer is a great time to prepare for the coming Seminary year. Periodically over the summer I will share some ideas for ways you might prepare and "get a jump" on the coming year.

This week's suggestion involves birthdays.

After you find out who your students are for the coming year will be, ask your ward or branch clerk to print you a birthday roster from the ward membership records.

For students who have summer birthdays figure out their "half birthday" (six months after their birthday) and celebrate their birthday on that date.

Use summer time to print or create birthday cards for each of your students. Address the envelope and write a personal message in each card. I also recommend that you include a "little something" in each card -- perhaps a favorite General Authority quotation, a scripture mastery card, etc.

In the upper corner of each card, write (in light pencil) two dates -- the student's actual birthday or half-birthday and the "presentation date" (the closest Seminary day before their birthday when you will actually give them their card).

Then write the presentation dates on your Seminary master calendar.

But... what if your students change during the Seminary year? No problem! It's easier making a few cards instead of all of them!

To possibly save you some preparation time...

Please note that the following teaching resources are available in the New Testament Seminary Scripture Mastery Resource packets -- a birthday card master (Volume 2), scripture mastery first letter cards (Volume 2), hundreds of glue-in quotations from apostles and prophets (Volume 1 and Volume 2), numerous handouts and scripture-based activities (Volume 1 and Volume 2 packets).

Best wishes,

Ken

www.KenAlford.com
ScriptureMastery@KenAlford.com

She forbids her grandfather to do any more matchmaking attempts. But then Jackson shows up to work with her horse. Has her grandfather been at it again?

A book about horses and romance. Really- what could be better! This was the fastest book I have read in a long time. I just couldn't put it down. It is a great book about forgiving yourself, and moving on past a tragedy. I felt like there was one loose end, but hopefully there will be another book to tell his story. This book set it up perfectly for it. I enjoyed the writing style and hope that there will be more books in the future.

But when the phone call came that his ex-wife died, he saw the chance to repair some damage. He didn't hesitate to head toward Panguitch, Utah to convince his sixteen year old son to come home with him. Taking him back to Arizona would be difficult, but not impossible. However, building a relationship with him may very well take a miracle.

This book took a while to really get in to. But once I did, I really liked it. It is simply about relationships and letting go of grudges. It made me wonder if every parent feels like they have made mistakes that are difficult to forgive. I also thought about how well a child feels like they know their parent. It was a simple plot but the characters had a lot of depth and I felt like they were all friends by the time I was finished. If you like books about relationships, I recommend it.

Her farm 'experiment' in Texas after a painful divorce is exactly what she thinks she needs. But she doesn't count on Ryan Delaney moving in next door. Then, when random acts of violence start to happen on her farm, she has no idea what to believe.

This is an interesting book. The author has obviously done a lot of research on current farming techniques and how to create a self sustaining environment. I found the information on living off the land very compelling. By the time I was done, I wanted to plant a garden at the very least, and I'm not much of a gardener. This book really isn't much of a romance, I would classify it more as a drama. It was a good book to pass the time.

Published by Covenant Communication, Inc.

Retail Price: $15.95
Available here

Seventeen years ago, Leah sent her young son, Austin, to the dark silhouette that she assumed was her husband. Austin disappeared. The extended search for their son has taken an emotional toll on their marriage and family as Leah and Garrett refuse to give up hope that Austin will be found. Will the new person who appears in their life help heal or harm their family?

I really enjoyed this book. It is clear, interesting and doesn't leave any loose ends. I couldn't predict the plot at all. How could it end so that it was okay for all involved? The author made sure that this story was realistic but hopeful. It certainly gave me a lot to think about - including thoughts about what holds a family together. I recommend it.

Each time I have taught the New Testament, I have received questions from students about the Apocrypha.

Doctrine and Covenants 91 notes that the Apocrypha "is mostly translated correctly" and includes the important counsel that "whoso is enlightened by the Spirit shall obtain benefit therefrom;"

Here are two useful things you can do to start learning about the Apocrypha:

Read the excellent entry in the Bible Dictionary. It also contains short summaries from each book in the Apocrypha.

If you have time to read one or two books from the Apocrypha, I recommend reading First Maccabees (for some of the "missing" Jewish history) or Ecclesiasticus (for some excellent advice that you can share with your students).

To possibly save you some time...

You may wish to note that there is a large glue-in entitled "Changes in the Land of Israel" in the New Testament Volume 1 Seminary Scripture Mastery Resource packet that lists changes in government, language, location of the Jews, religious authority, priesthood, religious unity, idolatry, and religious centers that took place in Israel between 587 B.C. and 30 A.D.

There is also a handout entitled "Section 91 -- The Apocrypha" in the Doctrine & Covenants Volume 2 Seminary Scripture Mastery Resource packet. It lists almost two dozen excellent quotations from the books of Ecclesiasticus and 1 Maccabees in the Apocrypha.
Best wishes,

Ken

www.KenAlford.com
ScriptureMastery@KenAlford.com

Starting with the first chapter in Matthew, flip through your New Testament -- keeping an eye on the JST footnotes at the bottom of most pages. Then turn to the JST excerpts that were too lengthy for inclusion in footnotes. Those additions and corrections will make your teaching job this coming year much, much easier.

Best wishes,

Ken

www.KenAlford.com
ScriptureMastery@KenAlford.com

Master

Reviewed by Dayna Davis, LDSFiles.com Staff Writer

Master by Toni Sorenson. Published by Covenant Communications, Inc.

Retail Price: $22.95
Available here

'Master' is the story of the life of Jesus Christ, as told by his servant Almon. Joseph and Mary found Almon, a young boy that was attacked by robbers and left for dead, and brought him into their household. Almon's primary responsibility was to care for and watch over Jesus throughout His entire life. Through Almon's eyes we gain a new respect and awe for the life of Jesus.

I was prepared to not like this book. I expected it to be a little too flippant with the subject matter for my tastes. But I was completely surprised. It was beautifully done and in a very reverent tone. It reminded me a lot of "The Work and the Glory" series. The events portrayed were real, with some creative license taken with a few characters to help the story make sense. I love reading books that bring real experiences to life and make me feel like I could have been a part of it. With this one I did. It started when Jesus was three and went through His entire life. How would I have reacted if I had been there? Would I have been one of Jesus's followers? I have often wondered. This book brought up many things to think about and I read it slowly, pondering as I read. I highly recommend it.

Reviewed by McKenzie Stephens, LDSFiles.com Teen Staff Writer

Diamondback Cave by K. L. Fogg. Published by Covenant Communications, Inc.

Retail Price: $16.95
Available here

'Diamondback Cave' is the third book in the series. It is about how Imogene Vandergrift, a crazy woman who thinks Wesley Mackey is her son, wants the judge to post bail so she can get out of jail and recover her diamonds. Jack Mackey will do anything to make sure she stays in jail. When Alex Harris disappears, though, the Mackey family might actually have to help Imogene. Wesley Mackey, and his best friend Amanda, want to take matters into their own hands. The travel to Diamondback Cave to save Amanda's soon-to-be stepfather. There- they find that this case is more complicated than just Alex disappearing!

I would definitely recommend this book as long as your have read at least one other book in the series. I have read 'Widows Revenge' (the second book) but not the first and I understood this third book totally. This book is suspenseful and adventurous and for the first time you see the character Amanda really involved in the adventure. The author has done an amazing job, in fact, this is my favorite of her books that I have read. She keep you on the edge of your seat up until the very last page. I would recommend this book for ages 11 and up.

The FLDS & Apostasy

In recent weeks, many of us have watched with great interest as events have unfolded at the YFZ Ranch in Eldorado, Texas. While watching the many news stories, it was easy to become deeply concerned about the treatment of women and children at the ranch and within the Fundamentalist LDS Church as a whole. On the other hand, I have also been concerned about the rights of the parents and children. The whole saga is deeply disturbing and it will be interesting to see how all of this plays out.

A few months ago I read a book titled Modern Polygamy and Mormon Fundamentalism: The Generations after the Manifesto by Brian C. Hales. It is a history of those who continued to practice plural marriage after President Woodruff’s manifesto declaring an end to the practice within the Church. It is a fascinating read about those individuals and groups who believed that President Woodruff was wrong and then continued the practice. As I progressed into this history and read about how these groups functioned, I felt impressed that I was reading a study on the fruits of apostasy.

I have been fascinated by some of the video coming out of the FLDS story, particularly those scenes showing the homes on the ranch. In a scene or two, pictures of the FLDS presidents were shown on the wall. The pictures progressed in the following order: Warren Jeffs (apparently they still think of him as their prophet), Rulon Jeffs, Leroy Johnson, John Barlow, Lorin Woolley, and John Woolley. The pictures continued right to left with John Taylor, Brigham Young, and Joseph Smith. In other places, only the picture of Warren Jeffs was visible. Hanging pictures of the prophets in one’s home is not unusual. I have a picture above my desk of all the latter-day prophets. What I found unusual is that there were no pictures of the Savior. I looked carefully through multiple scenes both on television and the Internet. If you walk into a typical LDS home, you almost always find a picture of the Savior in a prominent location. I wondered if they should change the name of their church to the Fundamentalist Church of Warren Jeffs.

This past Friday, in my daily Book of Mormon reading, I read again about Alma’s mission to reclaim the apostate Zoramites (Alma 31). Within that chapter we learn how the Zoramites corrupted the true gospel. They built a tower, which was the only place where they could pray and worship. Alma tells us that after praying, “they returned to their homes, never speaking of their God again until they had assembled themselves together again to the holy stand, to offer up thanks after their manner” (Alma 31:23). Alma tells us that they failed to keep the Law of Moses and did pervert the ways of the Lord. We learn in Alma 32 that the poor among the Zoramites were cast out of their places of worship.

What happened to the Zoramites? They failed to give heed to priesthood authority and to obey the word of the Lord as it was given through his prophet. As a consequence, their faith was corrupted and they worshipped after the manner of their own desires.

What happened to the FLDS? Like the Zoramites, they failed to give heed to the duly constituted priesthood authority and disregarded the word of the Lord as given through his prophet. The FLDS, and other such polygamous groups, believe that Joseph Smith was a prophet. Yet they are will to be obedient to only one portion of that which the Prophet taught. The Lord, through Joseph Smith, revealed the pattern for succession in the presidency. These groups are fine with that process until it reaches Wilford Woodruff. Because President Woodruff stopped the practice of plural marriage, they believe that he no longer spoke for the Lord.

Like the Zoramites, these people fell into apostasy. Like the Zoramites, we see the fruits of their apostasy: unrighteous dominion, child brides, possible child abuse, children taken away from their parents, boys kicked out their homes and church.

In the Section 1 of the Doctrine and Covenants, the Lord issues a warning to all people that must be carried to the world by his disciples. If these people truly believe that Joseph Smith was a prophet, they are unable to carry out this commission from the Lord because of their actions. Their fruits speak louder than any truth they might possess. In excerpts from President Woodruff’s addresses, attached to the end of the Manifesto, he indicates that if the Church had continued the practice of plural marriage, the work of the Church would have been unable to go forward, temples would have been confiscated, and the work for the dead would have ceased.

The work of preaching the gospel to the ends of the earth and doing saving ordinances for the dead has continued because President Woodruff heeded the Lord’s counsel. Since the days of President Woodruff millions have accepted the gospel and been blessed in innumerable ways. Since the days of President Woodruff, the work for tens of millions of the dead has been done in the temples. In the almost 120 years since issuance of the manifesto, only thousands have become part of the FLDS church or the other polygamous offshoot faiths. Little or no preaching to the world has been done. President Woodruff was inspired to cease the practice of plural marriage and time has confirmed the importance of issuing the proclamation.

Reviewed by Jennifer Wilks, LDSFiles.com Staff Writer

First Day by Allyson Braithwaite Condie. Published by Deseret Book.

Retail Price: $15.95
Available here

First Day is a continuation of the story Condie started in her first book, Yearbook. Many of the chapters are told from the perspectives of Andrea and Ethan Beckett, and the stories of their friends Julie and Mikey are interwoven in these chapters. New characters are introduced as well, including Joel Hammond and Caterina Giovanni, who each have chapters of their own.

I wasn't sure if I would be able to enjoy First Day, having not read Yearbook first. Many times when reading the second book in a series, it's hard to catch up. There was a little bit of that in the beginning, trying to figure out what was going on in situations that would be obvious to those who had read the first book.

I was pleasantly surprised, however, at how fast I was able to get into the story. The format was unconventional, with most of the story lines basically unrelated to each other, rather than telling different character's viewpoints of the same story. It didn't hold my attention as well as many of the other books I've read recently, but there is also one main story that is pretty compelling and pulls the reader through the book.

On the other hand, the book was fresh and interesting, and it was fun to see the lives of the different characters who were related in some ways, but completely individual in others, just as it is in our own lives.

All in all, I thought it was a good read with a few twists and turns thrown in to keep the reader on their toes. It could be enjoyed alone, but I think it would be most enjoyable for those who have first read Yearbook.

I didn't know if I would get anything out of this talk since I am already married, and it appears at first glance that this talk is only for those about to get married. Not so! It doesn't matter if you are considering getting married, a newlywed, or married for 40 years. Everyone can get something from this talk. I heard Elia Gourgouris at Time Out for Women and he is a wonderful speaker. In this talk, he discusses how vitally important it is that we define our expectations before we get married in four different aspects of life: Communication, Finances, Spiritual Beliefs, and Emotional, Spiritual, and Physical Intimacy. If you are already married, it's never too late to discuss with your spouse your expectations in these areas. It is also a good idea to periodically examine where your expectations are and how you are doing as a couple. If you have children close to marriage age or that are newly married, getting this talk for them would be a big blessing for them. I wish I had been able to listen to it before I got married.

Published by Deseret Book.

Retail Price:$9.95
Available here

My husband and I listened to this talk on CD while driving on a recent family trip. About 5 minutes into it, my husband said, "I'm pretty sure I have heard this before." That's when we discovered that this was not a new talk, it was actually done in the 80s, but has such a powerful message that it never gets outdated.

Brother Johnson tells in a compelling way the story of Kent Williams, loved by all, an extraordinary missionary with an extraordinary testimony that gets taken from life much earlier than expected. He tells with such passion the effect Kent had on him and all his peers, leading us to undertsand that each person's influence can be felt and make a difference in many peoples' lives. Nearly 30 years later, his influence is continuing to make a difference as this talk maintains its popularity. Thank you for your example, Kent, and thank you Brother Johnson for telling us his story.

She has become a very popular speaker at events like TOFW, Education Week, and EFY. In this book, she compiles thoughts from different talks she has given. I love the idea of being able to read some of the best talks she has given without having to be there when she gave them. She is funny and heartwarming, all while making important spiritual points. I've said before I love these books that have short, individual chapters because as a busy mom, it's much easier for me to find a few minutes here and there to sit down and read a chapter or two.

On each page, Max is searching for the greatest treasure ever. With each character, mom gives him encouraging praise like, "You are amazing" and "You are my hero". At the end, Max discovers what his great treasure really is.....his mom. I loved this story because I have a little boy like Max, so I can really relate to his mother.

If you have a boy or girl like Max too, I'm sure they would love to have this book read to them. I would especially recommend this book for those dads or kids that are looking for a sweet gift for Mother's Day.

Home Evenings That Help Teens Defend the Church

We inoculate our children against harmful disease. Why not inoculate our teenagers against harmful attacks on the Church they face at school by sharing with them accurate material on difficult subjects in the safety of a Family Home Evening setting where they can ask questions and discuss.

The following video clip is right up to date. It deals with recent news items that confuse the FLDS Church with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Teens can even send it via Facebook, or email to friends who misunderstand.

If the clip doesn't play to the end, click on stop, then pull the little arrow further along the bar and release. The end is powerful.

30 Seconds

As stated earlier, I've been wanting to write some short stories on random topics to help practice and fine tune my writing. I've studied stories from Poe to Richard Matheson (Terror at 20,000 Feet, and I Am Legend) to various others, looking for varied approaches and such.

Given the break-neck pace at which the story "E. B. Samuelson" came to me - virtually dictating itself to me - I think I got a little spoiled by the experience. I guess I was hoping that that would continue to happen with other stories. After all, that one just came to me out of the blue and literally came word for word as I was waking up one morning.

But, such was not to prove to be the ongoing case.

It had been several weeks, and no inspiration had come. I had some ideas, sure, but nothing was clicking and I couldn't get interested enough to actually sit down and type up any of them.

Then, last Saturday, I was sitting with my son listening to President Monson's talk during Priesthood Session. I've heard it said that during church you should make note of the thoughts you get, even if they aren't related to what is being said, because it might be inspiration for something important in your life.

Well, I'm not sure how "important" a short story is, but I certain had some interesting thoughts pop into my mind that had NOTHING to do with the talk (that I at least thought I was paying attention to, up until then).

The first one that hit me with the vapid permanence of a dream. All I remember is it had something to do with a guy managing to get out of a plane that has crashed in the ocean, and that he's the only one in a life raft and he's able to see the lights of the plane sink away into the murky depths.

The second one really stuck with me though. It was of a guy on a mountain path who is lying on his stomach reaching over the edge of a cliff. In his one hand is his wife. In his other is his teenage daughter. He's desperately trying to pull them up to safety, but doesn't have the strength. He gets to the point where he has to choose which one he will save. He's going to have to let go of one so he can use both hands to rescue the other, and making the choice is KILLING him.

What a terrible predicament!

I jotted down a key paragraph that night. I was hoping for another flooding of inspiration moment, but it didn't happen. Cool plot. No story. Monday I added a sentence or two for another portion of the story.

I was still questioning pieces of the plot. Why were they there? How did they fall? How did he get himself into a state where he's holding both? Will I need some "filler" information to make the story long enough to be worth reading? Will that filler info be background info on why they all care so much for each other, etc.?

Nothing on Tuesday.

Wednesday, I decided to just start writing. I was shooting for a 3-pager.

Rather than leading up to the fall, I started with him hanging over the edge with his girls clinging to him. I pictured it all in my mind, slowly, trying to envision what was going on in everyone's mind. Trying to decide on and describe what all would be tried or happening.

It was a pretty tense situation. The palms of my hands were starting to sweat as I wrote - and empathized with them.

Just before midnight, I finished the first draft. Seven pages. My heart was pounding having "experienced" the whole scenario over the past couple of hours. I was pacing with energy. It was a great feeling to get the story out in completeness and see it through.

I had Teresa read it right then. She normally would have zonked out after about half a page at that time of night, but she zipped right through it. It's probably the best page-turner I've written to date.

I titled it, "30 Seconds" because that's about how long the story lasts in real time.

Her companion sleeps all the time and the sisters that they have been assigned to see have always had letter routes. But Cath determines to do her best. She finds that things never turn out how one predicts.

This is a great book about rising beyond expectations in spite of the obstacles. I really enjoyed this story. Sometimes as women, we truly don't understand each other or our motives. I appreciated the author's approach with this book. The main character, Cath, doesn't know what the outcome is going to be from her efforts to visit her sisters - instead of just sending the letter that she's been told to send. It also seems like everything else in her life is falling apart. But Cath tries to find joy in the small things. I think she is an excellent example of perspective. I thought the whole book was a great reminder of the true purpose of visiting teaching, and I hope there will be another story to follow.

He introduced her to the tools that could capture the beauty around her, she in turn, introduced him to the gospel. Now, Samara is a promising student of photography, with a steady boyfriend, and a dysfunctional family. Adam's reappearance in her life is a gift, but what does it mean?

What a thought-provoking book. This novel appropriately handles some tougher subjects. Samara has a testimony as a teenager and thinks that it solves all of life's problems. As she gets older, she learns that sometimes her testimony is not the answer to everything and then she's not sure what to do next. "Shades of Gray" is exactly what the name suggests - no black and white answers, just some different levels of thought on different problems. It also touches on the influence and affect we can have on each other's lives. I really liked this book because it was unusual and made me think.
Whose Church Is It Anyway?

Over the past year there have been numerous articles and blogs addressing the Church, its doctrine, practices, and people. Much of this is due to the Romney candidacy. I have taken an interest in following this discussion about the Church. As I have tracked threads from articles and blogs, I am sometimes led to the pages of those who are members of the Church, yet unhappy with its doctrines and/or practices, or some of those who have left the Church. I do not dwell on these pages for I find little constructive discussion.

I came across the blog of one individual who recently resigned his membership in the Church. He posted on his blog, “The 96 Theses: Constructive Suggestions for Improving the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” I suppose he is trying to beat Martin Luther’s 95 Theses. Here are a few of his suggestions or criticisms:

The Church should acknowledge that the “faith-promoting” history it has been teaching through its correlated materials is often misleading or false and the Church should present members with accurate and complete information about Church history. The Church should not teach through word or visual image things that are demonstrably false.

The Church should sell its interest in KSL and other media ventures. The Church should not be in the media business.

The Church shows disrespect toward women by withholding the priesthood from them. The Church should grant women the priesthood and the right to officiate in all the offices pertaining thereto.

The Church shows disrespect toward homosexuals by supporting a constitutional amendment to prevent states from granting all the same legal rights and privileges to homosexual couples that married heterosexual couples enjoy.

The Church shows disrespect for members whose spouses are not members of the Church or are disaffected with the Church by teaching that only couples sealed in the temple who maintain strict obedience to Church teachings and requirements will enjoy family relationships after death.

The Church should clarify for its members that a “full and honest tithe” should be paid on one’s “surplus,” that is, on the amount of money one has left over after paying for taxes and necessary living expenses such as food, housing, clothing, utilities, and transportation.

The Church should shift focus to humanitarian service missions rather than active proselyting missions.

I would love to discuss each of these challenges (and maybe I will at some future time), however all of these challenges and criticisms boil down to one single question: Whose church is it anyway? In his preface to the Doctrine and Covenants, the Lord stated, “Wherefore, I the Lord, knowing the calamity which should come upon the inhabitants of the earth, called upon my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., and spake unto him from heaven, and gave him commandments” (D&C 1:17). Later on in the same revelation that Lord stated, “And also those to whom these commandments were given, might have power to lay the foundation of this church, and to bring it forth out of obscurity and out of darkness, the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth, with which I, the Lord, am well pleased” (D&C 1:30).

The Lord has claimed this Church as his own. He called Joseph Smith to be his voice upon the earth. Through him, priesthood authority, the authority to act in God’s name, was given to men. An organization was revealed that would perpetuate God’s kingdom upon earth. If this is not the Lord’s church, then whose church is it? If it is not the Lord’s, why belong to it? Apparently, the writer of the 96 Theses does not believe it is the Lord’s church or he would not have resigned his membership. In which case, why the 96 Theses? Why try to reform something that is not what it claims to be?

One of my favorite missionary scriptures is found in Amos 3:7, “Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.” If this is the Lord’s church, he will reveal his will through his prophet. The Church is not a democracy where we gather in a convention to discuss doctrines and practices and then vote to decide what to change or not change. They tried that at the Council of Nicea, which excluded the will of God, and ultimately led to the incredible fragmentation of Christianity.

Is the Church (meaning the membership) perfect? No. Is there room for improvement? Absolutely. This is the reason for the existence of the Church, “For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive” (Ephesians 4:12-14).

As members, we can make suggestions for improving the effectiveness of this great work. Within the limited authority granted through our callings, and through inspiration, we can do that which helps us to succeed and carry out our responsibilities. In the 1930s, Harold B. Lee, then president of the Pioneer Stake, along with other stake leaders, came up with a welfare plan for their stake that was eventually adopted by the whole church. However, the acceptance of the plan at higher levels was subject to approval by the Brethren under the guidance of the Lord.

This is the Lord’s church. Changes as suggested by the writer of the 96 Theses are not the prerogative of the writer, myself, or even the entire body of the Church. Such changes in doctrine and practice must be approved by the Lord and revealed to “his servants the prophets.” It continues to amaze me that such individuals that have separated themselves from the Church even care whether it changes or not.

A final note. We all loved President Hinckley. I never met him personally, but he was my friend and counselor. I came to know that he was the Lord’s prophet. Upon his death, I felt the loss of my friend and prophet. Though I have admired President Monson over the years and cherished his counsel, I could not see him filling the great shoes of President Hinckley. Last evening I attended General Priesthood Meeting at our stake center. As I watched President Monson speak to the priesthood brethren assembled throughout the world, the spirit manifested to me that the mantle of the prophet has been moved and President Thomas S. Monson is the man bearing that mantle. There is a new prophet in town.

Reviewed by McKenzie Stephens, Teen LDSFiles.com Staff Writer

Stay True: Music for the Young Women's 2008 Theme by Lyndsi Houskeeper. Published by Covenant Communications, Inc.

Retail Price: $9.95
Available here

I think this CD is very beautiful. The music is based on the 2008 Young Women's theme. The instrumental performances are like the other ones except they don't have any singing. They are beautiful to listen to if you don't want to hear words. Lyndsi Houskeeper, the person who wrote all of these songs, did an amazing job communicating the message. I'm not a big music person but this was understandable and interesting to listen to. The singers are amazing and truly gifted. The musicians in it, all do a fantastic job.

The first track was called "More Like Him". It talks about being more like the Savior and to be steadfast and immovable. "No Greater Joy" is in the perspective of a mother. It shows a mothers love to a child and the importance of mothers. "The Work of His Hands" is about growing from our trials. One line is, "with every hill I climb, the view I find is perfectly grand." It helps you know that you can learn from the hard times to make the good even more wonderful. My favorite is, "That's a Friend". It's about being a true friend. A friend who sticks with you through thick and thin and lifts you up. They help you achieve the best and there's "no contest. No comparing. Pure compassion, Christ-like sharing." There are many more songs on this CD with beautiful messages in each. I would recommend it to all Young Women.

She has a husband, Wayne, who adores her, plus three beautiful boys. But that changes when Dr. Brandon Rhodes, a famous heart surgeon and a key figure in her past, shows up in her grocery store. Mercedes knows that things won't be quite the same again.

I enjoyed this book. It is not quite a sequel but it follows a few of the characters that we met in a previous novel "Flying Home". Rachel Ann Nunes is a solid storyteller, and her books are always interesting - not at all predictable. This one makes you wonder about different paths in our lives. Did we have experiences where our perspective may not have been the whole story? Would we have made different choices if we knew what everyone involved was thinking and going through? I recommend it.

It is an excellent tool to help those that are struggling with trials both big and small. The author has insights and answers that are helpful and easy to understand. The statement I love the best from this book is: "The gospel of Jesus Christ is not insurance against pain. It is resource in the event of pain, and when that pain comes (and it will come because we came here on earth to have pain among other things), when it comes, rejoice that you have a resource to deal with your pain."

Carlfred Broderick died in 1999. I think it is wonderful that his words still live on to touch and influence others.

Doctrinal Ping Pong

I often receive questions about various aspects of the gospel from those who frequent my lesson outlines posted on the Internet. Though I’m not a scholar, I search my resources and attempt to provide an answer based on the teachings and writings of the Brethren (past and present).

I recently received the following question: At what point in time did Joseph Smith become the prophet? The question was raised by a sister during a lesson discussion in Relief Society. The instructor taught that Joseph became a prophet at the time of the First Vision. At the end of the class, the sister who raised the question came up to the instructor and said that Joseph could not have been the prophet until he received the priesthood and the Church was organized. This sister then raised the question with the husband of the instructor. Apparently, the discussion continued among some of the sisters the following week, creating a certain amount of stress and contention.

I recall a High Priest group meeting I attended some years ago. I do not recall the topic of the discussion. What I do recall is the group discussing a variety of answers to a particular question, some of those answers speculative. The discussion continued for several minutes when one of the quorum members indicated that we were participating in doctrinal ping pong and not getting to the heart of the matter. I remembered that discussion when I received the inquiry about the Joseph Smith and at what point in time he became a prophet.

I love nothing more than a good gospel discussion and have probably been involved in more than my share of doctrinal ping pong conversations. I would also be among the last to put the brakes on a healthy interchange of ideas. Such discussions can be both spiritually and intellectually stimulating. However, within our class and quorum discussions, we need to be careful about getting caught up in discussions over questions that cannot be resolved, require speculation, or may negatively affect the feelings of a class member. Doctrinal ping pong discussions should be limited.

The answer to the question posed by the writer, did not have a simple answer. Each party seemed wed to a particular answer without exploring the response by the other. In the end, one simple fact remains, Joseph Smith became the Lord’s mouthpiece for a new generation. Regardless of the day or year his prophetic calling began, this simple truth stands above the rest. Our ultimate goal is to seek truth and we need to be careful about getting sidetracked in that quest by participating in doctrinal ping pong.

It is much more thorough. It begins the story before the Passover and continues all the way through to Jesus Christ's visit to the Americas. It might not keep the attention as easily as the first book for very young children, but for older children, it is a perfect teaching tool. In board book form, it is convenient to take to church and will last through many children. The very last section is called "Why we celebrate Easter" and I think this is the best part of the whole book, a great way to wrap up everything the children have learned.

There is one subtle detail I caught and really thought was nice. On the cover, instead of it saying "By Deanna Draper Buck", it says "Retold by Deanna Draper Buck."

Maybe you will decide you want both! "In the Garden" is a short, condensed version of the Easter story. Many key elements are left out of the story, but if you are looking for a very basic version to help your children understand a very complicated topic, this would be a good choice. The illustrations are beautiful and are truly what makes this book special.

Reviewed by Melanie Lott, LDSFiles.com Staff Writer

Time Out for Women

My sister and I got the wonderful opportunity to take a Time Out from our lives for 2 days and boy did we! It has been so long since I've been to EFY that I kind of forgot that feeling of being completely uplifted, almost elevated, ready to conquer the world. We experienced wonderful speaker after wonderful speaker that lifted my spirit more than I can express. We were taught by Sheri Dew, Wendy Watson Nelson, Virginia Hinckley Pearce, Wayne Boss, Chieko Okazaki, Elia Gougouris, Michael McLean, Mercy River, Hilary Weeks, Mary Ellen Edmunds, Doug Brinley, Merilee Boyack, Jane Clayson Johnson, and Carolyn Rasmus. I haven't felt so spiritually filled in a long while. As I looked around the auditorium filled with thousands of women, I was struck by the thought that the heavens had opened as each woman there was receiving individual spiritual instruction to help them further build the kingdom of God. Amazing. My sister and I were touched and learned from completely different things, making me realize how individual our purpose is.
<br /&gt
