Créer en 2001, le designer's Day est un évènement parcourant durant trois jours la ville de Paris. Débutant à la place des Etats-Unis dans le 16ème arondissement en passant par le Boulevard haussman pour s'achever sur celui de St-Germain.

Il réunit des exposants tels que Baccarat, Sony Style ou La Parson School of art and design de Paris. Du 11 au 15 juin vous porrez assister à des conférences autour des thèmes de la mode, du design et de la création.

Ses oeuvres n'avaient pas été exposées depuis plus de 20 ans et ressurgissent cette année à dans la capitale française. The grand old Lady and the Parisians celebrate the 120 years of the Eiffel Tower inauguration. And are we glad the Tower of Towers is still with us! What would Paris be without this incredible landmark?
243 376 000 visitors have seen the Eiffel Tower so far. To make her look fit and young for future visitors the Eiffel Tower will get a make-over. The operation will take about 60 tons of paint, some 1500 brushes and a about year.

La Tour Eiffel fête ses 120 ans

On félicite la Grande Dame avec son grand âge. Le 31 mars 1889 la Tour Eiffel fut inaugurée à l’occasion de l’exposition universelle de Paris. Et on est bien content maintenant qu'elle n'a pas été démontée après! Paris ne sera pas Paris.
Pour être à l'hauteur des regards des millions de visiteurs et amoureux (243 376 000 visiteurs depuis 120 ans!) elle va se faire une beauté en forme d'une couche de peinture fraîche. Quelques 60 tonnes de peinture bronze, 1500 brosses et un an l'opération remise-en-forme va prendre.

La Vilette la Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie has an experience-exhibition that should be of interest for all the fans of Jerry Bruckheimer's kind of series like CSI. At Crim'Expo you are going to be the Crime Scene Investigator in charge to solve the mysteries of a crime. This hands-on exhibition runs till January 3th 2010, yet you are advised to make reservations, because some days the Crim'Expo is sold out and sometimes disappointment is harder to solve than any crime scene mystery!
The exhibition is in French, English and Spanish and should be fun for 11 years and older.

Find a WIFI spot near you

Maybe it's me but i haven't been able to successfully find a WIFI spot, with my first generation and non-3G iPhone, if I'm not connected somehow to the internet (WIFI...).
There are some apps out there, if you do a search in the app-store on "wifi" or "spot", maybe they work well if you walk around with your iPhone in a WIFI hotspot dense area.
In my usual habitat it's not a problem, becaue i know my usual suspects, but now I'm in Amsterdam, where the weather is grey and typical water-cold, i don't want to show of my mobile device too obviously for security reasons. And I'm not staying in a fine Le Quartier Hotel with free WIFI. I feel lost, i got lost and i need to download a map, maybe check out the website of public transport to see what tram to take and so on, all the things a healthy mobile and internet addicted person needs.
Well the easier way could be the check out this website with the worldwide WIFI spot finder : www.free-hotspot.com (Before you go on your trip )
Find the nearest hotspot and voila you take it from there!
And for the gadget-lovers they have also a iPhone app and a Skype tool.

If you don't own an iPhone (or better said if you're not owned by an iPhone) and hence don't have the handy metro application for iPhone, you can use the online interactive metro-map. (you can use it on any mobile device that lets you brows websites)
Mark the starting station and your end point and the site gives you the best way to go with the time it will take, the cost etc.
like: Very complete
dislike: it's in French only at least i was not able to find a menu where you can change the language.
The main information site of RATP comes in several languages

Si vous n'avez pas de iPhone, et donc vous ne pouvez pas consulter l'application Metro, vous pouvez consulter le plan de metro en ligne, préparer votre itinéraire, voir l'état de trafic etc.
Très complet et facile a utiliser. Et si vous avez un iPhone ou autre téléphone mobile qui permet d'accéder le www, vous pouvez en profiter en route!

Travel Guide and other books

This could be a new rubric where note-worthy travel guides and other books about Paris are presented.

I like to kick off this new installment with a series of travel guides that has nothing to do with Paris but are jewels, the kind you only come across once every couple of years.
It's a travel Guide, but not as we know it!

There should be a warning on the website and on the book cover saying something along the line "Do not eat nor drink while reading" because you will snort it trough your nose and way beyond the book or computer screen. Prepare the floor as well because you will be rolling on it holding your stomach. That's why i don't recommend bringing them on your travel, you will attracted unwanted attention from airport or other authorities when you're laughing so loud.
This is the most hilarious I have seen or read in a while and I have just been visiting the the Monty Python Youtube channel and have a life time subscription at Margaret and Helen blog.
And this effect is only from reading the webpages.

I'm looking forward to the upcoming titles: Arduous Walks, the guide that doubles as uncomfortable pillow; Travel for Seniors with the best tips on how to lodge a complaint, and a list with the 50 most likely places you left your reading glasses.
Hopefully by the time my ordered books arrive my abs stopped hurting.

Paris Fashion Week March 4-12

Those of you who want to know, are probably long time aware of these dates. So this is intended to inform the unaware and those who don't care.
It's almost Fashion week in Paris. The time of the year to forcefeed the public pictures and video footage of unhealthy and unhappily looking models sporting the latest creations of the creators.

Hopefully the creators decide for coming winter season 2009-2010 to let go of these low waste-line pants. They hardly look good on a skinny person with dangerously low BMI. Beside they are as uncomfortable to wear as they look really bad on 95% of the population.

And let me ask just this one thing and then i'm done ranting: How come the mouthpieces of the kings and queens of style do not have stylish websites? Look at the above official website. It has not changed nor improved since a couple of fashion seasons! Then there are other search results on Paris Fashion Week that don't update, they're stuck in last seasons info. If we update our wardrobes with the frequency they update their websites... Luckily there are some exceptions such as our colleague blogger Kamel and his "Style and the City" blog.

Depuis le 26 janvier 2009 on vie dans l'année de Buffle selon le calendrier chinois. Nous pouvons apprendre de ce savoir, car 1 milliard personnes ne peuvent pas se tromper...
Selon les spécialistes de Feng Shui Purdew & Associes l'année du buffle 2009 est féminin, associé avec l'hémisphère droit du cerveau: intuition, création, guérison, retour vers la terre, stabiliser les fondation et réorganiser. Faites le vide, recyclez, débarrassez-vous du superflu .

Chinese New Year in Paris

Since January 26 2009 we live in the year of the Ox as the Chinese calendar says. We suggest to get something from that wisdom because 1 billion people can't be wrong!
The Feng Shui specialist from Purdew & Associes learn us that the year of the Ox is feminine and associated with the right brain hemisphere: intuition, creation, healing, return to the earth , stabilise the foundations and reorganise. Clean out, recycle or sell off surplus.
Earth is the dominating element, stomach and spleen are the Earth organs, in charge of our digestion and transform our food into Qi, according to Chinese Traditional Medicine.
My advice: eat balanced, preferably warm and without stress or worries, reduce dairy and drink warm water with cold meals.

25 years ago, on January 24 1984, The first Macintosh was introduced to the world during the annual shareholders meeting. Two days before during the Superbowl the famous commercial "1984" was aired for the first and last official time. The commercial had made so much impact that it was shown on major news - TV stations, the free exposure and buzz became a unplanned school-case of viral marketing.
Besides this lesson in buzz, the Macintosh computer changed forever the way we look at and work with computers. And set the bar so high for the competition, that they still running behind and catching their breath without ever attaining the high level.

Il y a 25 ans, le 24 janvier 1984, le premier ordinateur Macintosh a été présenté pendant la réunion des actionnaires. Deux jours avant à l'occasion de Superbowl la publicité "1984" a frappé l'écran des millions de foyers américains. C'était la première et dernière diffusion officielle, mais l'impact été tellement grand que les grands chaines de télévision ont rediffusé, la pub plusieurs fois et ont fait de la pub "1984" un exemple classic d'un campagne publicitaire virale.
A part de ce leçon en viral-marketing le Macintosh nous a fait changer la façon dont on voit et travaille avec des ordinateurs personnels. Macintosh a mis la barre tellement haut que la concurrence n'arrive toujours pas vraiment à atteindre le niveau.

HEMA store opened in Paris /ouverture premier magasin HEMA en France

January 23 was the grand opening of a Dutch HEMA store. First on in France. It's a sort of Monoprix but then only with own brand products. But unlike in Holland you won't find in the Creteil store the smoked sausages next to the bras, because they won't sell the Dutch speciality in France. A very regrettable choice, still enough other reasons to check it out for the cute children's cloths, kitchenware, decoration, accessories and make-up at year long low prices. Also HEMA has chosen for a new presentation approach which is not in product families but on the moments of use. On 421 square meter there are 9 "rooms" such as the children's' room with toys, kids fashion, sweets there is also the living-room, office, kitchen etc.

HEMA Centre Commercial Créteil Soleil, (Avenue General de Gaulle)

Janvier 23 était l'ouverture d'un premier magasin HEMA en France. Hema c'est un sort de Monoprix, un magasin où on trouve des produits pour le quotidien, mais chez HEMA il n'y a que des produits de leur propre marque. HEMA a commencé en 1926 à Amsterdam avec ce concept de grand magasin pour les petits gens. Les magasins ont étaient pendant certains périodes comme les magasins TATI. Mais depuis 25 ans le design a retrouvé sa place dans les magasins et dans les produits et les prix restent généralement en dessous de la concurrence. Malheureusement ils ne vont pas vendre les fameuses saucisses fumées dans le magasin à Creteil mais ce n'est pas la seul raison pour laquelle vous ne trouvez pas, comme en Hollande, les saucisses à coté la rayon lingerie. L'autre raison est le magasin est aménagé d'une manière originale: sur les 421 mètre carrés les produits ne sont pas groupés par famille mais dans l'endroit d'utilisation dans 9 pièces différentes. Par exemple dans la chambre enfant vous trouvez des vêtements, jouets et bonbons, dans la cuisine les ustensiles de cuisine tendance et dans le bureau un faste choix de papeterie.
Un must pour les gens qui font attention au design et ont envie de s'entourer des accessoires tendance pour faire leur habitat "gezellig" (=cosy à la Hollandais) sans se ruiner.

Voyage aux USA

Attention quand vous allez partir aux USA. Il n'est plus possible de remplir le papier I-94 dans l'avion. Depuis le 12 janvier 2009 il faut remplir un formulaire en-ligne 72h à l'avance sur le site ESTA:

"dans le cadre du Programme d’exemption de visa sont désormais soumis à des conditions supplémentaires de contrôle de sécurité. Tous les voyageurs concernés désireux de se rendre aux Etats-Unis dans le cadre du Programme d’exemption de visa doivent solliciter une autorisation au moyen du processus suivant..."

Selon un article sur le site de la BBC 99,6 % des demande ont une réponse favorable et le plus part dans les 4 secondes.
Une fois l'autorisation obtenue vous êtes tranquille pour 2 ans et vous pouvez faire un weekend New York sur un coup de tête.
Si vous arrivé aux USA sans avoir rempli ce formulaire en ligne vous risquez d'être mis sur le premier avion de retour France. A éviter donc!
