Give A Dog A Bone

Most dogs...
are content with just a bone...

A bone to gnaw and chew
to their heart's content...

Like Rusty...

But not Leo...
No,
Sir BarksAlot
(as he's been dubbed),

he goes for each piece of string
that I carefully placed to hold the netting in place
to keep him and smaller doggies
from slipping between the railings
of our back deck...

Little bugger,
he figured out...

how to untie the knots...

Back to the hardware store...
I go...

Threads,
from a long ago note passed between us,
found me this morning
letting me know that you had slipped
away with grace and beauty…
The petals of your vibrant self,
softly, gently,
like the musical lilt of your sweet voice,
folded into the mystery
and I found myself
wishing for one more conversation
of books loved,
of seedlings,
and how you would coax the blooms
of your far North Winter garden
into life…
I wished for one more second with you,
to hold you selfishly in my gaze
and marvel
at how the wind could not blow out your strong flame…
Only you
could carry it into the dark unknown,
lighting the way
for me, for those who will miss you tenderly,
until we step through and over,
meeting once again in the very heart
of our enduring friendship…

Boxes & Circles

Sometimes…
I want things in boxes.

Neat and tidy
boxes within boxes within boxes,
something to contain
all of this chaos that threatens
to flood and overwhelm,
taking me down,
down, down into myself
as I let go of the edge…

upside down and inside out,
these boxes could hold it all
neatly stacked,
tucked inside each other…

Or circles,
circles upon circles,
concentric and perfect
in geometrical precision
carefully laid out,
always holding orbit
so the boxes stay within the pull
of gravity down,
down, down, to kiss the earth
and the fingers of the tramp
who whittled this wood so I could open the lid
and caress the red velvet material inside

and tuck myself away,
a treasure waiting for the day
that someone else opens the lid,
takes me out,
and says,
these are the gems I’ve been looking for…

this piece of heaven
on earth,
I am poised on endless possibilities…
This unknown
kisses my bare toes,
welcomes me in, to this warm
hallowed cave
carved throughout time
for just this moment…
Remembering
these notes that swirl
as the sun rises
behind me…
all shadows, friends
guiding me back
into this Eastern light…

illuminates the crack

Deep,
dark and ever widening,
this chasm will not close…

Life keeps
this wound open
and round,
a glowing orb of all that I am
no more…

A portal,
this untouchable sound
in my chest,
the only way left… 
for me
to step through…

Oodles of Poodles

Every second Sunday of the month
is the West End Poodle Party
at the beautiful De Turk Round Barn Dog Park
in Santa Rosa...

This was Rusty & Leo's first time at the romp,
and did they romp!

There were big poodles and litte poodles,
and all sorts of fusions of poodles,
like my aussie-doodles...

Can you see Leo
heading off a pack of white standard poodles?

While Rusty
mostly manned the side-lines...

and looked for safe havens
between legs...
Especially the legs of his beloved
Auntie Nancy & Uncle Cliff...

I so love my doodles...
They are such good, good doggies...
