Not ideal but at least it’s down so that’s always good.

Heading into today I’ve had a great week and really can’t wait to get on the scale to see how it played out. Let’s see how it went:

Previous Blogged Weight — 289.8 lbs (on 04.14.2012)
Previous Weight — 286.8 lbs (on 05.05.2012)
Current Weight — 283.8 lbs
Change In Weight — -3.0 lbs

Not too bad and I’m feeling stronger every day. I’m still loving the circuit training and actually enjoying some running again while it’s not yet hot.

Yesterday I cut my calories lower than usual and really tried to control my sodium. Looking back at my LoseIt records I noticed that I’m usually 1,000 – 1,500 mg of sodium above the RDA of 2,500 mg daily … yikes! I guess that could be one of the reasons my blood pressure has been so high. While I have worked to lower my sodium in comparison to where it was, until yesterday I hadn’t looked up the RDA for sodium.

Don’t take me wrong, I’m not saying sodium has caused me to gain weight. It’s an indicator of the less than ideal food choices I make and it certainly hasn’t helped my blood pressure.

So add to my list of changes I mentioned in yesterday’s post that I’ll be watching my sodium a lot closer going forward.

What does your daily sodium intake look like?

It’s been a few weeks since I last checked in so I thought I’d better knock out a post before people sent out a search party. It’s been a busy few weeks with my new job, the family, getting ready for the new chicklet, and trying to fit workouts in but I’ve managed them all quite well … it’s just the blogging that’s suffered.

So I’m sure you’re probably wondering how my workouts and weight-loss are going, this is a health & fitness blog after all. Well lets get to it … my workouts have been going pretty good. I’ve managed 5-6 days per week doing circuits, running, cycling (on the trainer), weight training, and some other random cardio. The big challenge for me hasn’t been if I work out but when I work out.

With the new job I’ve been doing my workouts at night instead of the morning which has really thrown off my day and apparently my metabolism. I’ll admit it’s been challenging after a long day at work to come home and after the kids are down muster the energy to work out. I prefer to just get up early in the morning and knock it out so my metabolism can peak during the day … instead I’ve been working out and then going to bed, putting that metabolism to sleep at the same time.

So now we’ll get into how my weight-loss is going. To say it’s going slow would be an understatement. I’ve dropped around 3 pounds in the past 4 weeks, not counting this week as tomorrow’s my weigh-in day. While I know my workouts aren’t entirely to blame they’re certainly not helping me as much as they might have when I was able to get them in during the morning.

What I mean by that is that while my food is meeting my caloric needs it’s nutrient makeup isn’t ideal. Combine that with less than ideal workouts & metabolism now and my losses are trickling. Going from losing 2-3 pounds per week to maybe 1 (if I’m lucky) is hard to swallow.

But rather than go insane repeating this slow grind and expecting better results I’m instead going to try to shift it up to make it work better. Here are some of the things I’m starting to do:

Reducing my calories — LoseIt has me targeting around 2,300 calories (it goes down as I lose) which until now has been fine. With the workout changes though I feel like I need to lower that so I’m shooting for more around 1,800 for now. I’ll adjust later as my training changes if need be.

Cleaning up my food — No, it’s not covered in dirt but it certainly isn’t as whole as I’d like. Part of it is due to laziness and part of it is due to circumstances at home. With the spring here and the farmers market opening soon (tomorrow, May 12th) an influx of fresh veggies and fruit will help a lot. Add to that more bbq’ing and an attempt by me & my wife to just cook more and it should get better. I’ll also be trying to make better lunch choices at work, free does not always equal better.

Random low cal day — I was thinking about doing one random day per week where I’d go really low calorie. I’ve talked to a few people about this, all who I trust and who aren’t fad dieters, and they’ve had solid success with this approach to stimulating their metabolism. I’d certainly try this with caution and wouldn’t drop to below 800 – 1,200 calories but it might be worth a shot if my other changes aren’t having much impact.

Smaller portions — In an attempt to choose smarter food I’m at the same time resetting my food portion size mentality. This includes everything from my free meal foods to my regular foods. Resetting the American portion size mentality that bigger is better is hard and while I’ve certainly made progress over the years adjusting it I still have work to do.

I’m hoping that these changes will help me to bring my losses up to a level that I feel comes close to matching the quality of the workouts I’ve been doing. While I feel stronger and faster and I really push myself in my workouts I’m not seeing losses to match. Lets hope these changes correct that misalignment.

How have your workouts been going?

I’ve decided that today’s (Saturday) going to be my new official weigh-in day. If you’ve visited my blog in the past you’ll know I usually do this on Fridays. Given the new job and that I like to workout before I weigh-in that means todays the day since I can’t workout in the morning during the week any longer. Yes, I’ve weighed in after working out for years now so I’m not cheating because I’m consistent week to week and month to month because I always do it.

Anyhow, the last time I blogged my weighed in was on February 10th. I did weigh-in last Saturday just after I restarted and I’ll state that as well as todays weigh-in results now. On to the numbers!

Previous Blogged Weight — 278.4 lbs (on 02.10.2012)
Previous Weight — 294.0 lbs (on 04.07.2012)
Current Weight — 289.8 lbs
Change In Weight — -4.2 lbs

I’m very happy with this weeks results given how focused I’ve been. I’ve eaten almost perfectly and have managed to workout almost every day I wanted. I did have one lazy day but sometimes that happens. Here’s what my workouts looked like this week:

Friday — 45min, Circuit Training

Saturday — 30 min, Running, 40 min Walking

Sunday — 40 min, Circuit Training

Monday — Off Day

Tuesday — 40 min, Circuit Training

Wednesday — 45 min, Cycling Trainer

Thursday — Off Day (lazy day)

Friday — 40 min, Cycling Trainer

Saturday — 40min, Circuit Training

Those are all of my workouts since I started back up again last Friday. You’ll notice that I started on Friday but didn’t weigh-in until Saturday which means I was probably even higher than 294, yikes

I mentioned “almost perfectly” above because I will admit to having partaken in some small portions of easter candy around the house. I’ve limited myself to like 10 M&M’s and no more but I have had 1 serving of easter candy per day, usually late at night when I’m relaxing. Far from perfect I know but not as bad as I’ve been in the past … progress not perfection.

This week I’m going to continue my focus and build some momentum. My new job was great and really made it easier to get my food in without over indulging. Despite there being food I shouldn’t eat on hand they had ample fresh fruit and healthier options which was a huge win each day. For our dinners we ate at home every night except one where I had some Chicken Kabobs and Potatoes … healthy options for the win!

While we were out and about today I picked up a new pair of shoes for work along with some new running shoes. I’ve had to stick with traditional running shoes with their thicker support for my running because my ankles and the bottoms of my feel hurt far too much if I don’t. I am however fine with minimal shoes for circuit training, walking, and everything else so I picked up a pair of the new New Balance Minimus Trail 10.

They feel great so far, I’ll let you know how they work out in the future. I still use my other New Balance Minimus shoes for cross training, weight lifting, and other things along with my VFF.

I hope your week was as good as mine and that you’re starting this new week with momentum and focus.

I think the kids were starting to feel it as well as they’ve been sleeping more and were yawning much earlier each day. All that fresh air wore them out

Today though, it’s back at it … in more ways than one.

Today I start the new job I wrote about a few weeks ago. I’ve been very excited about this new opportunity and can’t wait to start contributing to the team. New job, new friends, new challenges, and a fresh perspective … it’s going to be great.

Today I also continue my first week (day 4 actually) of being back working out and taking names. I’ve had some great workouts the past few days getting back to some circuit training, running, and a bit of cycling scheduled for tonight. I’ve also been eating really well, excluding Easter breakfast which included some apple pancake. Even with that though I was well under my calories for the day with a killer workout and a nice walk in the afternoon.

While it’s nice to be back at it I’ll admit that I’m going to really miss seeing my little ones all day every day. They can certainly be a hand full but they’re worth it. The next time I’ll have this kind of time off will be when number 3 arrives in ~10 weeks, gulp

I hope you had a Happy Easter weekend with your families and are as excited about the coming weeks as I am.

It’s a fully supported ride through the lovely hills of Wisconsin. This particular event has 6 different distances to choose from including 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 km of which I’ve chosen the 200 km route.

You may remember last spring when I did the Horribly Hilly Hundreds (HHH) which was a 100 km ride through similar hills or maybe you recollect the Pumpkin Pie Ride (PPR) which was a 100 mi ride through pancake flat Illinois. This ride is longer than the PPR (which is my longest to date) with the added fun of the wicked hills of the HHH multiplied by ~2.2 (HHH was 5,682 ft).

Oh yea, the ride has an elevation gain of 12,369 ft and is a total distance of 120.2 miles. While there’s no evil Blue Mounds to climb this time there are more climbs strewn throughout this course which means lots of climbing fun is to be had.

Check out this elevation profile:

Looks like an EKG doesnt it? That’s roughly 19 climbs averaging ~651 ft per climb … the HHH had around 15 climbs with most of the elevation change being on the Blue Mounds climb at the start and at the end. I felt pretty awesome on most of the other climbs so I have high hopes for the DD climbs.

Last year the HHH took me 5 hours with plenty of time taken to rest at each of the supported stops along the route. Given my HHH experience I think the DD take me roughly 9-10 hour to complete.

There were roughly 2 major rest stops (food, liquids, and mechanic) and 2-3 smaller stops with liquids. The DD looks to have 10 rest stops and 3 water stops along the 200 km route according to the maps. I’m still researching what nutrition they’ll have at the DD but if it’s anything like the HHH or PPR then I’ll be set for nutrition, now I just need to bring the legs.

So what am I doing to bring my legs? The #1 thing I’m going to be doing is dropping weight.

“Every extra pound you carry above your ideal weight makes you 15-20 seconds slower for each mile of a climb” — May 12′ Issue of Bicycling Magazine

That means that for me I’m roughly 30 minutes slower on a 1 mile climb. I know the math may fall apart the heavier you are, and I’m not doing any 1 mile climbs, but the logic and overall meaning are sound. The heavier you are the slower you climb and the more energy you expend while climbing. So for me the best thing I can do is to steadily drop weight for the next 130 days until the ride.

My goals for the next 4 months:

Eat Clean

Consistently workout 6 days per week

Eat Clean

Ride as often as possible

Eat Clean

As you can see my biggest downfall and nemesis has been eating clean … I know it and certainly can’t deny it but I can plan for it. I asked Amy if she thought I could go 130 days without eating bad, what was her instant reaction? Nope … she’s only being honest. I don’t believe that I’ve ever went an entire week without at least having something bad. I did change from free days to free meals and eventually tossed free meals but bad food has remained in some form.

So over the next 130 days I’m going to have some killer workouts, put a lot of miles on my bike, burn an amazing number of calories, and I’m going to eat clean and learn to tell about it. Look for updates along the way as I work to stay accountable for my new goal and during my transition into a new job next week.

Have you set any big goals for the season yet?

I’ve been away in Michigan the past few days for my brothers 40th birthday … today’s the real day actually, Happy Birthday Bro! It’s hard to believe I’m almost there as well, not quite but soon.

Anyhow, heading back home usually causes me to reminisce about where I’ve been, how far I’ve come, and the path I’ve traveled to get here. Sitting in the car for 10+ hours affords you many an opportunity to take inventory of such things. With my latest announcement I couldn’t help but look back at a number of the significant events in my life that have happened around the Spring and what’s interesting is how they usually happened in pairs.

A few short months after I first started working out and getting in shape in 2000 I met my future wife Amy.

Amy and I were married during the Spring (a few years later) and soon thereafter she started PA school.

Abby was born in the spring and soon afterwards I started a new job.

Brad was born in the spring and soon afterwards I started a different new job.

A few months after I start my new job we’re having our third child.

Yes, you might say that Spring is a season of (re)birth for me and my family.

I know most of these may seem like coincidences and I’m sure they are, but they’re still interesting to think about … especially on a long car ride. If you’re in the southern hemisphere this whole idea “falls” apart but give me some latitude ahe

“Never cut a tree down in the wintertime. Never make a negative decision in the low time. Never make your most important decisions when you are in your worst moods. Wait. Be patient. The storm will pass. The spring will come.” – Robert H. Schuller

Spring is usually seen as a time of renewal, a time of rebirth, a time where things come out of hibernation and revisit the world with fresh (and often hungry) eyes.

If you’ve been in an unhealthy or unsatisfactory situation for a while maybe now’s the time to rethink it?

If you’ve been dragging your feet to start working out or maybe you’ve been floundering in your nutrition since the first of the year then perhaps you should refresh or start anew?

Go find something motivating and/or interesting and get to giving it 110%! Find a way to improve yourself and those around you … even if you’re doing great I’m sure there’s something worth cleaning up or starting fresh.

For me, I’m picking an event to train toward this fall along with starting fresh with my nutrition. I’m cleaning house and taking inventory again of what’s worked, what hasn’t, and what it’ll take for me to make some significant progress in the coming months. Look for more details soon …

The storm has passed, Spring is upon us, and there are amazing new opportunities around every corner … it’s now up to you to turn and look.

While I alluded to it in my last post I figured I’d come out and say it today, I recently quit my job. Don’t worry, I have another one lined up and start in a few weeks. I have a healthy mix of nervous and excited energy right now as this is going to be a challenging new opportunity.

So perhaps you’re wondering what this means for my health & fitness? Well, with this new job I’ll have to adjust my routine quite a bit.

My hours will be much earlier so my workouts are now permanently moved to either the evening or much much earlier in the morning (an option I’m not opposed to but 4am doesn’t sound too exciting).

Because I’m going into work earlier I “should” be able to leave earlier which means more time with the kids in the evening, win! This should also make meals easier as I can help cook more often since it won’t be as late when I get home.

The job will afford me less opportunities to step away from my computer. As a perk they help make this easier to handle by offering free breakfast and lunch. This is a pretty fantastic thing as it will save time and money in the long run and I can pick from some healthy options.

I’m pretty excited with all of these changes and while the workout changes are going to be challenging I’m certain I can make it work. I really don’t mind working out at night, it’s just a matter of making sure I don’t pull the “I’m too tired” excuse and miss my workout entirely.

I think I’ve used up my allotment of excuses this year on why I can’t work out so the evening workout one isn’t an option

My workouts have been sporadic at best the past few months. With far too many late nights researching, studying, and coding I missed most of my morning workouts. Yes, I even take my “analyze everything” gift to career research as well … fun ahe? Anyhow, needless to say I’m excited to be done and having found my way I can now redirect some attention to my health & fitness again.

The past few months of this year (yes, that’s most of 2012) have been pretty challenging for me. I’ve been doing a lot of professional soul searching and have had a few fitness hiccups during that time but I’ve been pretty quiet here on my blog, for that I apologize.

That doesn’t mean that I haven’t been itching to post nor does it mean that I’m giving up blogging … I have & I’m not!

I’ve honestly been swamped with the whole finding my professional mojo thing and as is typical, the first thing to suffer was blog posting and then a close second was fitness. While I haven’t negated my losses for the year I’m sure I’m close … more on that soon.

One of my flaws (or less than ideal traits) as I’ve mentioned before is that I dig into most things 100%. There’s no kinda sorta toying with something for me, it’s usually an all in approach. Yes, I’m sure you’d love to play poker with me wouldn’t you?

Along with that all or nothing approach is the difficulty I have accepting mediocre situations that aren’t showing a perceivable light at the end of the metaphorical tunnel. With fitness we know we can usually control the switch for that distant light and when we’re focused we can usually see it, though sometimes faint, but we can see it and charge toward it. With almost all other things however, like career, that light isn’t necessarily in our hands. We can work to impact the switch but turning it on and off isn’t always in our hands.

Anyhow, I’ve always tried to keep a very clean separation of my blog life from my professional life and this is no exception. One thing I will say though is that there’s a double switch on the wall now, one of which is now in my control … and I’m reaching to turn it on.

Sorry, there were way too many household switch metaphors there. Look for more of me here soon

But today is Brads birthday and it’s crazy to think that it was 2 years ago today that he was born.

His constant state of running, love of the word uh uh (no) & caw caw (his word for coffee and all things food), and his unusual anger with the dogs stealing his food are hilarious and always make us smile. The way he’s constantly looking for his Mom and mimics everything Abby does is infinitely cute. Even though he’s not exactly a chatterbox yet (his sister beats him there) he’s crazy smart and loves doing puzzles and playing games.

A day without seeing Brad is a day that’s missing a little joy. I love you Brad, Happy 2nd Birthday!

Sometimes the more you do something the less you enjoy it because it becomes boring and repettive. Sometimes the more you do something the fonder and more excited you become with it. As I cycle toward my goal I have a bit of spare time to sit and think about the reasons that cycling is so enjoyable, peaceful, and rewarding to me.

Here are a few of the things that I love about cycling:

Riding into the wind at the front of a pace line.

Espresso half way though a long ride.

Pushing your legs and body to complete exhaustion doing intervals.

Finishing a ride covered in sweat, road dirt, and looking the worst for wear yet feeling like a million bucks.

Riding a new bike for the first time.

The first outdoor ride of the year after spending the winter cooped up on the trainer.

Getting new cycling gadgets & gear.

Being asked to take another pull or a longer one at the front of a pace line

Outsprinting a dog with your heart beating out of your chest.

Being told you climb really good “for a big guy”.

Gliding past cars in traffic while drivers stare ahead filled with road rage.

Your first ride in a real cycling kit.

Teaching your kids to ride a bike for the first time.

Finally learning how to pedal circles and seeing how it changes your pace forever.

That click your shoes make locking into your pedal.

Being able to help someone fix a flat.

Riding on an open road with no one around for miles.

Watching the pros climbing in Le Tour and daydreaming about doing it someday.

Being schooled by an older rider on a fixie.

The first ride after cleaning your bike.

Your first successful clip out.

Seeing someone admire your bike.

Breaking 42 miles per hour on a hill decent.

The anticipation of a weekend ride after a stressful work week.

Standing to climb a hill and smiling when you reach the top only to realize you made it without walking or sitting.

How about you, do you have a sport or hobby that you love?

Another Friday and another day of weighing in and taking account of the good and bad things I did this week. All in all it was a really solid week of effort. While my eating wasn’t perfect because we ate out a few times I still made sensible choices when we did. Nothing crazy, nothing bad, and certainly no soda or sweets to speak of.

As for my workouts, it was a solid week of workouts and I got some much needed saddle time in:

Saturday — Off Day (two weeks in a row, what gives)

Sunday — 60 min, Cycling Trainer

Monday — 45 min, Cycling Trainer

Tuesday — 45 min, Cycling Trainer

Wednesday — 30 min, Weight Lifting & 20 min, Elliptical

Thursday — 30 min, Cycling Trainer

Friday — 15 min, Running & 20 min, Elliptial & 20 min, Precor AMT

I managed a week of solid efforts and lots of sweating with all morning workouts except for Thursday which was in the evening. So now let’s see how the weight faired:

Previous Weight — 281.4 lbs (on 02.03.2012)
Current Weight — 278.4 lbs
Change In Weight — -3.0 lbs

I’m very excited to finally be in 270′s again. I’m slowly working down to my low again and hope to be the in a few months.

Some of my new workout clothes that had been starting to get a bit tight are loosening up again. There’s nothing worse than buying new clothes because you lost weight only to not fit in them anymore because you gained.

I’m still on the fence about signing up for a triathlon this season. NOT because I don’t won’t to, just because of the practical timing of most of them being around the time our new baby is due or late in the summer when I might be traveling again. It just makes sense to focus on cycling and maybe signup for a bike race/ride when I find one that fits.

How’d your fitness week go? Hopefully as good a mine

I’d also like to start by sharing that as of Sunday I’m no longer planning to use Gympact … I’ll go into the why’s around this decision later.

For those that aren’t familure with Gympact, it’s a website that allows you to set a fitness pact (aka goal) and be rewarded (or punished) for meeting your pact with cold hard cash. For example, you could set a pact of $5 to workout at the gym 3 times per week. If you don’t make it to the gym all 3 times you’d be charged $5 each and every week. If however you do make it to the gym you’d be rewarded with … something not even close to $5.

I started on January 2nd setting up a goal of 3 workouts per week with a $5 pact. I know a lot of you are wondering what type of cash you could make off this thing. Maybe you could quit your job and just workout for a living?

Well, I hate to burst your bubble but your lifestyle wouldn’t be very extravagant. Here’s a rundown of my cash rewards over the past 5 weeks:

Jan 02 — Jan 08 paid $2.19

Jan 09 — Jan 15 paid $1.29

Jan 16 — Jan 22 paid $1.29

Jan 23 — Jan 29 paid $0.54

Jan 30 — Feb 05 paid $2.10

Total paid $7.41

Not quite the windfall you were expecting? That’s bit lower than that $5 pact you put up isn’t it? What could be interesting is to see how the payments change over the coming months. Obviously January was a month of New Years resolutions but as you can see that last week there were quite a few failed resolutions in the money pool.

During the course of using Gympact I compiled a few comments & complaints.

There is ZERO transparency into the equation used to calculate the payouts. You have no idea what Gympacts cut is in the transaction nor how your pacts financial commitment or number of days impact your weekly payout. You’d think that the more you put up the more you’d make? That isn’t the way it works based on what I’ve read online.

The iPhone application is noticeably sluggish and clearly not native. It doesn’t scroll smoothly, it regularly crashes, it constantly fails to find me, and the UI lacks polish in terms of responsiveness and intuitiveness. For something that potentially costs me $5 per week I expect more polish and consistency.

You can’t find your weekly pact payout or costs online. You can find your total win loss to date from your pact but not a breakdown on a weekly basis so if you toss the email your SOL.

Gaming the system is pretty easy, though I didn’t do it I promise. An example of how you could game Gympact is if your gym has a coffee shop or restaurant nearby all you have to do is go there, check into Gympact, sit, and enjoy a free additional workout.

Sometimes when you workout and check out when you’re done, the next time you checkin it tells you that you completed a 24 hour (or whatever hour) workout since the last time you were at the gym. With this bug you essentially get double the workouts for each real workout.

There’s zero social interaction to the application. This was kinda crazy to me since I expected to see friends pacts, share progress, etc. This definitly makes the whole application boring and forgettable to be honest, which might be the point so they can get your pack money. Yes you can tweet or Facebook each day but this is not Fitocracy, Dailymile, or LoseIt.

On a positive note, the two times I had issues with the application or recording a workout the support staff was very quick and on their game. All I had to do was reach out via email or twitter and they usually got back to me in a few hours.

So yes, in all I do have more complaints than positives when it comes to Gympact but I don’t want that to discourage you from trying it. If you’re someone who works out at the gym regularly this application is like free money. If you’re someone who’s competitive and driven by losing a few bucks per week then this application could be for you.

To me Gympact is more of a stress than a motivation. That constant worry of “did my workout record” … “did it find the gym this time” … “did I remember to check out” … “but I want to workout at home” … it just wears at me and doesn’t make it fun any more. Combine that stress with the gym conflicting with my 6,000 mile bike goal for 2012 and Gympact just doesn’t make sense for me.

If you love trying new things, workout a lot at the gym, and don’t mind working through a few quirks then I’d give Gympact a try. If you’re someone easily frustrated at lost data, crashing applications, want a social support system, or stress out about hitting a financially motivated goal then this is definitely not your thing.

I think Gympact is a solid idea and given more time it could become a great application that really motivates many people, I just think it has too many rough edges right now.

While playing with him the other day it dawned on me how this struggle is so much like losing weight. Our children’s first words are a lot like getting healthy because initially we don’t have a clue what we’re doing (or saying) but slowly we figure it out.

You learn to speak by speaking, to study by studying, to run by running, to work by working; in just the same way, you learn to love by loving — Anatole France

While Brad knows quite a few words, colors, letters, body parts, etc. when prompted, he refuses to say them in his day to day interactions. Instead of speaking words he prefers a finger point, a shake of his head no, or a turn of his head and grunt.

While we may generally know what foods are healthy and that we should be exercising regularly we don’t always act on that knowledge in our daily lives. Instead of applying this knowledge toward getting healthy we prefer to eat and do what we want when we want it … we choose to turn our metaphorical heads and grunt.

At some point we hopefully turn a corner on our healthy life journey, just like Brad will and just like my daughter turned a corner and learned to talk.

At some point the finger pointing will turn into “hello” and eventually into “Daddy, I’ve got something to tell you” (one of my daughters favorite phrases).

At some point we’ll choose the smaller portion size or the vegetables over the cheesy processed puffs.

At some point we’ll take the stairs instead of the escalator or maybe we’ll choose to sign up for that 5k instead of sitting on the sidelines.

Inside of us is the potential to be healthy and happy much like the potential to speak. What spurs that growth and desire to communicate beyond the grunts and finger pointing varies with each individual. While we may not speak clearly at first and we may not make the best choices we will learn lessons along he way and become fluent in healthy living.

What’s important is that we don’t stop trying to unlock that potential … that we don’t accept being overweight and unhappy … that we don’t give up and accept the grunting over the “Daddy I love you”.

Have you chosen to keep on grunting or are you speaking with your actions?

It’s Friday again, time for another weigh-in. I’ve worked out 6 times since last Friday with 2 off days. I managed to do mostly morning workouts again this week getting out of bed around 5 am, bright and early.

Now that I’m in the morning groove I love it. While it’s certainly challenging at first fighting the alarm, once you get into it you find that your whole day clears up. You make healthier food choices, you have tons of energy, and regardless of how bad your day was at work you don’t have to somehow muster your last ounce of energy for a workout.

Here’s a look at what workouts I ended with this week:

Saturday — Off Day (I forget why I was lazy today)

Sunday — 60 min, Cycling Trainer

Monday — 30 min, Running & 20 min, Elliptical

Tuesday — 45 min, Weight Lifting & 30 min, Cycling Trainer

Wednesday — Off Day (Planned)

Thursday — 50 min, Precor AMT

Friday — Evening bike workout planned

So now I’m sure you’re wondering what the scale looked like … on to the numbers!

Previous Weight — 280.2 lbs (on 01.27.2012)
Current Weight — 281.4 lbs
Change In Weight — +1.2 lbs

Well that’s not at all what I expected. I felt great all week and ate pretty well. The only thing I can think of was eating out a few times this week even though I made positive food choices that were normal portions (aka kid sized).

Calories wise LoseIt shows I’m about 1,800 calories under for the week and that’s already including and accounting for a 2 pound loss. Don’t worry, I don’t usually end up under much for the week since my free meal spends the credit.

Shrug, onward and downward … I’m not going to dwell on the number, it’s just a number. I feel stronger, I’ve done some new workouts this week, and my energy is great so I’m just going to keep on keeping on. Besides, next week is going to be the week of the bike since I’m tossing Gympact to focus on my cycling goal instead of my 50¢ weekly windfall.

How’d your weekly goals go?
