The piano is an important musical instrument for jazz bands since the origin of jazz music and it can be played in the style of a solo performance or as part of a band. Like the guitar, the piano is one of the few musical instruments in a jazz band which can play chords as well as notes instead just single notes only instruments such as the saxophone, trombone, trumpet or even the vibraphone (1 or 2 notes together).

Gone were the days when a jazz pianist’s role is just to keep tempo with repetitive chord combinations. Nowadays, the pianist is free to choose any technique or style to accompany a band or a singer using both short and sustained chordal and melodic fragments called comping.

An accomplshed jazz pianist must not only be good at sight-reading as well as good at improvising chord symbols but also must be able to adapt to the different playing styles of various bands he jams with. Jazz pianists must balance this interpretation and improvisation to the musical style the bands are playing.

The jazz pianist is indeed a happy musician because of the extended range of the piano. The piano offers the pianist with a much greater number of choices and techniques for improvisation, much more so than any other instruments in a jazz band.

In a jazz musical style known as “striding”, the left hand of the pianist alternates positions very quickly playing notes in the bass register and chords in the tenor register. The right hand will usually play the melody, but might also play harmonic content, chordally or even in octaves.

Jazz pianists play the solo with 3 basic objectives to fulfill simultaneously. The techniques are as follows :-

a) To provide a clear and swinging rhythm. This style is usually done by striking a beat with the right hand just after a weaker beat with the left hand. The objective of this technique is to mimic the combination of a cymbal ride as well as the walking bass. This technique can also be executed deftly with the left hand alone, by imitating the weaker beat preparatory swing note that is played by a bassist just before he strikes some of the notes of the bass phrasing.

b) Play the melody or solo improvisation with the right hand.

c) Establish the guide tones for chord changes.

One method commonly used by jazz pianists for tackling this triple situation simultaneously is to hold the hands together in a fork-like shape with the index and the third finger joining the thumbs to form a central group, whilst the fourth and fifth fingers are spread outwards.

This is done so that the pianist can use the left branch fingers to play bass notes, the middle fingers to moderate the guide tones and the right branch fingers to play the upper lines of the melody.

It is indeed challenging for the pianist to meet all these demands at the simultaneously. However these skills are inherent in most competent jazz pianists.

What is commonly called the ‘circle of fifths’ is also an important element in playing jazz piano because it provides harmonic diversity through a well guided harmonic phrase. Playing the circle of fifths technique is very much related to chord “planing” techniques which shift a chord, often voiced in fourths, up the scale, while implying a repeated harmonic pattern of tonic-dominant-tonic-dominant.

If you intend to be a good at playing jazz piano, then mastering these styles and techniques is a required skill.

! if you know where your notes are, and your basic scales, then the next step is to get a book about jazz theory.once you can play basic chord progressions, try and identify a song that has them and transcribe, or play what they are playing and he next time that chord or progression comes up you will be able to play that lick! you can embelish it or what ever, if you want to completely improvise yourself , start with playing the root 3rd 5th and 7th of each chord/triads – if you dont know what that is, you betta learn! like i said a bassic lesson in theory or a begginer jazz theory book would help a lot.

I assume u mean play guitar chords on the piano. You put your pinky on the chord u want 2 play (for example, if you want to play the C chord, put your pinky on the C key) put your middle finger on the key two away from your pinky and your thumb two away from ur middle finger. Press down on all three keys at once. NOTE: some chords aren’t done like this (most are, tho). I reccomend picking up a copy of Michael W. Dean’s $ 30 Music School for a pictoral reference for playing piano chords.

Image by -Snugg- While playing hide-and-seek today, I ran across a long lost friend: Chick Corea (a.k.a. Tortellini). We haven’t seen him for months… apparently he had rolled under one of the human’s beds and hadn’t come out because it was so nice and cozy under there. Tortellini is one of the best jazz pianist ever. He used to make recordings, but there was a human whose name was Chick Corea, and that human would sell the recordings, saying that he had played them. Well, folks, this is the real Chick Corea. We even call him Chick Corea sometimes because of it. He’s pretty good at the piano for someone who doesn’t really have arms, let alone fingers. Anyway, Tortellini/Chick Corea tried to teach me how to play the piano today… it’s really hard, but I had fun trying.

The piano is an excellent instrument for almost any genre of music, but none more than blues. For decades, the piano has been a mainstay in blues music.

Beginner Blues Piano

One might ask, “What is blues piano?” Well, the answer is simple. It’s a form of music that is played on the piano. It’s also one of the easier styles to learn and once you master this style of music other styles will be easier to learn. I guarantee that by the time you are done reading this you will know a great deal about beginner blues piano.

The first thing you need to learn is 12-bar blues. This a common progression in blues piano playing. In order to play this, most people will use seventh chords. When playing a song it is usually broken down into three sets and each set is broken down into four bars. You should start out playing on the “C” key. If you do this then your fourth key should be “F” and the fifth “G”. For instructional purposes think of “C” as “I”, “F”, as “IV”, and “G” as “V”.

Now, the first set will be played as follows I, I, I, I. The next set will be IV, IV, I, I. And the last set will be played V, IV, I, I. These should be played using your right hand. In order to come up with the correct sound you really should learn to play seventh chords.

Now that you know what your right hand should be doing, it’s time to learn your left hands positioning. Your left hand will follow an 8-note pattern. This pattern goes like this: I, III, V, VI, VIIb, VI, V, III. Now the actual notes that you will be playing with the C chord are: C, E, G, A, Bb, A, G, E. While the F chord notes will be F, A, C, D, Eb, D, C, A. And for the G chord is: G, B, D, E, F, E, D, B.

Before you begin playing look at the notes on the piano and familiarize yourself with their positioning. If you already know the chords and notes of the piano, blues piano lessons will be easy to master. The first thing you should concentrate on learning is the 12-bar blues in key C. Once you have it down in this key then try playing it in others.

If you learn blues piano first it will give you a good foundation that will help you move on to the genre of music that you long to play. Once the foundation of piano playing has been established you will find that it is much easier to learn new styles of piano. Just keep in mind that learning a new style can be challenging, but once you learn them you will be able to play with ease and elegance.

Finding a good teacher to help you can actually be beneficial to your learning of the piano. If you can’t find a good teacher in your area don’t worry because there are always other methods. You can always go online and find some very good information on blues piano lessons or find a DVD to play at home. A lot of time the DVD will come with an informational book to help you out. If you are serious about wanting to learn blues piano and stick to your routine and practice you will soon find that you are playing like a pro.

Just remember that you won’t learn to play overnight. It will take time and patience, but the end result is quite rewarding.

The main thing is to listen to and transcribe solos from various jazz musicians regardless of instrument. Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, et al. Transcription will train your ears and it will help immensely with phrasing. Although you would not want to “steal” licks, learning lines from the masters is invaluable. -Learn all of your modes which you may already be familiar with. -Learn to use guide tones (3rd’s and 7th’s) as a foundation for your solos. -Learn all your arpeggios in relation to the chords. -Learn to use approach notes. Of course, this is a big task that you are undertaking so you may also want to find a good teacher.
