Robots! Cinco Ranch High School students built this contraption to shoot balls to a moving wagon, measuring distance and speed through a mounted camera. This is so cool. My son Ben stood there literally for an hour watching and asking questions. I think he's ready to join the robotics club!

Katy ISD Technology Showcase Part 1

On May 27, 2009, the Katy Independent School District held their annual Technology Showcase in the beautiful Merrill Center. Each school had student and teacher representatives showing off all the cool stuff they did with tech this year. Along with a LOTS of digital storytelling, there were some really exceptional projects where you could easily tell the students poured in a labor of love. Hats off to Katy ISD for promoting this, even though, in general, they block more sites than many communist countries. But that is a story for another day. Today, we’re going to look at some of the blogs and podcasts that a few St. Laurence teachers have started using Posterous. Take a look at them below and let me know if you want to get one started for your classroom or event.

SLCS Tech Blog – http://slcstech.posterous.com

This blog is mainly an archive of all the tech emails I send to the staff, including this one. If you visit the blog, you will be able to search for entries by keyword. Or you can click the tags to the right to drill down your search. Application: you could use a blog to collect emails you send to parents thereby creating a searchable archive and/or an FAQ section.

From Katie Lavery’s Journalism class – students recited, recorded, and posted their essays to a blog. What a great way to share what students are doing. Also, when students know they are performing for a wider audience, the quality of the work increases.

Texas Weatherbugs – http://weatherbugs.posterous.com

From Fran Rice’s class – students use the Weatherbug system to record the current weather and to forecast the weather for the week. This is a collaborative project between our school and Dr. Green Elementary School in El Paso. This is a “proof of concept” blog at this point to show how two classrooms can collaborate and share information.

The last two sites I mentioned are also podcast enabled. What that means is that you can subscribe to the sites using iTunes. By doing this, all new episodes will be pushed to iTunes once they are published. This happens almost automatically. To subscribe to these podcasts, do the following:

Open iTunes.
Go to the Advanced Menu and click on Subscribe to Podcast.
In the window, enter the feed address of the site by adding “/rss.xml” to the end of the address. For example: http://klavery.posterous.com/rss.xml.
Click OK and you will then see iTunes begin to download the latest episode.
Click on the GET button for each additional episode you wish to download.

OK, I hope you enjoy the sites I listed. It’s time to get out there and blog and podcast your heart away!

SMART Board Documentary Video Request

I recently was tasked to create a short (3 minute) video for our annual auction at our school. The purpose of this video is to let parents know how successful the recently installed SMART Boards are in the classrooms and to solicit funding to purchase more for next year. So, for lack of a better term, it's a marketing documentary.

My thinking on this video is to interview teachers (those with and those without the boards) and interview students (1st-7th grade) about their experiences using SMART Boards. My question to my network:

What questions could I ask to the students AND to the teachers that might solicit an appropriate answer that would help convince parents to support more SMART boards? I really want to stay away from too much pedagogical techno-babble because I'll lose my intended audience. I think elicited words like "excited", "motivated", "engaged learning" would be effective and to the point. Short and sweet.

I'd like to ask 4 or 5 questions to the teachers (both with boards and those without...interesting comparison) and a few questions to the students whose answers will have an immediate impact on parents and their understanding of how important this technology is during the day-to-day learning of their child.

What questions would you pose for this documentary-marketing video? Of course, once it's done, I'll post it. Thanks in advance.

For Our Friend - Mr. Paul R. Wood

Over the last month or so, several friends of Paul R. Wood decided to create a healthy cookbook with our favorite recipes. This was in response to a scare Paul had that led to several days of hospital care (and lots of Twitter chatter). Fortunately, with the power of prayer, everything seems to be OK. But I'm sure it was a wake up call for Paul and a good reminder for all of us to eat more healthy.

On a side note, I loved being involved with this project. Here is a list of videos that can be used to supplement your curriculum and give inspiration to your students. The list is broken down into categories: History, Science, Language, Arts, Inspiration, Classroom Management, How to Guides, Technology, and Humor. A couple of the videos may not be completely appropriate for classroom use so preview before you show them with your kids. One in particular I like that is reflective of my teaching philosophy is called Pay Attention, written by a friend of mine from Utah.

On a related note, streaming video in your classroom can be dicey at times with respect to our Internet bandwidth. To get around this for YouTube, there is a website called KeepVid – http://www.keepvid.com – that will allow you to convert a YouTube video to a video file that can then be downloaded to your computer. By doing this, you will avoid any potential buffering issues caused by video streaming.

SMARTBoard Literacy Activities

These activities are primarily geared for K-5 classrooms. Some of the activities include rhyming words, punctuation, descriptive words, ordering, verb play, phonics, letter/sound identification, and poetry. Give it a spin and find a gem that you soon won’t be able to live without.

Geography and Third Grade - A Shameless Request

It must be the timing of when third graders learn certain things. Recently, I read a post by Karl Fisch about a geography project his daughter is engaged in. My son, who is a third grader here in Texas, was just assigned a similar project where he needs to gather information from around the country and the world. Specifically, he chose to send the actual paper request to our good friend in Oregon (who also happens to be a middle school social studies teacher). Since we lived there for nine years, it was an obvious choice.

So, in my most transparent (and shameful?) manner, I am going to flatter Karl with imitation (and maybe some extra Map 2.0 stuff) and ask you to post some information about where you are from. There are two places to make your mark...
