Users are already having issues with Windows 11 beta

While it's been a little while since Microsoft announced Windows 11 (and there have been several development releases already), it's only been a few days since the first beta was released.

At first glance, the availability of a beta version should mean a more stable version of the operating system, but that doesn't mean there aren't any issues. Of course, when software is in beta, that means bugs and glitches are to be expected. Here it is the switch from the Dev channel to the beta channel that is causing some concern for some people. And the problem? The system requirements for Windows 11, of course.

Take a look at the Windows Insider Twitter account and you'll see complaints from many people who are having trouble switching from the Dev channel to the Beta channel. One of the issues that people face is the system requirements for Windows 11.

There have already been many complaints about the hardware requirements Microsoft put in place for Windows 11, in large part because they wiped out many perfectly capable systems.

With the Dev version of Windows 11, Microsoft has relaxed the system requirements and allowed users to install the operating system on hardware that will not be compatible with the final version. With the release of the first beta, the requirements are now enforced, much to the user's dismay.

Microsoft explained to a user on Twitter to a user, “Yes. Your hardware does not meet the minimum hardware requirements, but an exception for Dev Channel has been granted ”.

This shouldn't come as much of a surprise, not least because Microsoft had made this clear previously. But for people who enthusiastically install the Dev version of Windows 11 only to find that the beta (and therefore a preview of the RTM) doesn't work, this is a huge disappointment. For the record, Microsoft has indicated that it will not be possible to bypass the system requirements for Windows 11.

The news came in a recent Ask Me Anything (AMA) session posted for the Microsoft Tech community. During the session, Microsoft Program Manager Aria Carley shares the news while talking about the Windows 11 deployment. She answers a question about devices that are not "fully compatible with Windows 11". The user asks him:

"If you consider that a device is not fully compatible with Windows 11, will it be offered the upgrade via Windows Update? "

Carley replies:

“So we are talking about this new material floor of which devices are eligible and which are not. And we know it sucks that some might not be eligible for Windows 11. But the reason we do this is to keep devices more productive, to have a better experience and most of all to have better security than before so that they can remain protected ”.

Then there's a request to turn off backups that can block upgrades, and Carley says Group Policy can be used, although not recommended, to bypass those blocks. However, she adds:

"This Group Policy will not allow you to bypass the Windows 11 hardware application. We will always prevent you from upgrading your device to an unsupported state because we really want to make sure your devices stay supported." load and secure ”.

Switching channels with hardware that is fully compatible with Windows 11 is no problem.

In fact, moving from the Dev channel to the Beta channel is something Microsoft highly recommends. In addition to pointing out that "your feedback has the biggest impact" in the beta channel, Microsoft also says that now is the perfect time to make the switch due to the parity between Dev and Beta versions at the moment *: " You can simply change your channel setting. It's also worth mentioning that sticking to the Dev channel means not only using a potentially unstable version, but there's a hurdle to overcome when Windows 11 hits RTM later in the year. To the question "Can I stay on the Dev Channel after Windows 11 officially releases and continue to receive Dev Updates for Windows 11?" Microsoft replied, "No, if you are staying in the Dev channel and want to upgrade to Windows 11 upon commercial release, you will need to perform a clean install."

So now is the best time for Insiders to switch from Dev channel to Beta channel.

Microsoft's new system is becoming more and more stable. Microsoft has released the first beta of Windows 11, available to people who are enrolled in its Windows Insider program. Until then, early versions of Windows 11 were only available to "highly technical users" of the Windows Insider Program Dev channel, but Microsoft is now extending availability to the Beta channel. The company believes that the beta version is less volatile, with more secure builds; although this is still something you will probably want to install on a test machine or second partition.

Microsoft launches the first beta of Windows 11

“We are very pleased to announce that we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22000.100 for Windows Insiders in the beta channel,” the company said in a blog post Thursday. This means that Windows 11 is getting more stable and closer to its release. “If you're in the development channel, now is a good time to consider switching to the beta channel if you want to stay on more stabilized versions of Windows 11,” the Windows Insider team said. Of course, to install the beta you will need a compatible computer.

It's notoriously difficult to determine if your hardware will work with the next version of Windows, but Microsoft's article on Preparing for Insider Builds directs people to its system requirements page. The company said it will pay close attention to how the 7th Generation Intel and AMD Zen 1 CPUs operate during the testing period. It is therefore possible that these systems will be allowed to run the beta version, but not the final version. Usually, moving from Dev to Beta requires a complete reinstallation of the operating system.

But according to the Windows Insider Twitter account, it will be possible to do this directly on site for a "short period." So, it's probably "best" to install it as soon as you can if you don't need to stay on the Dev channel. Those who have already taken the plunge believe that the move to beta only required a quick reboot. Also, for those who are still on Windows 10, but are adventurous enough to join the beta, you can sign up for the beta channel on Microsoft's website for the Windows Insider program.

Of course, even though Microsoft claims that the Beta Channel releases are more stable than the Dev Channel releases, they are still beta releases. There will likely be bugs, crashes, and missing features. Microsoft even has a full list of current issues in its blog post, which also says that the Teams Chat feature that is available to some in the Dev channel is not yet available to beta users. However, if you can't wait to try it out, it's now stable enough that Microsoft considers it ready for early adopters.

Why Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip might not be a disaster like the Fold

At Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event in San Francisco, the company opened the show with perhaps the most anticipated announcement of them all: the Galaxy Z Flip.

And even though it's been a while since the Galaxy Fold debuted, we haven't forgotten about infamous #FoldGate – you know, that time when the Fold launched and a million problems erupted before it came to market?

We're hoping history doesn't repeat itself with the Z Flip. And, judging by the design and specs alone, we have high hopes.

Here are five reasons why.

1. A fun design in a compact form factor

The Z Flip comes in a clamshell form factor, so it's a lot more compact than the Fold. You can easily fit it into your jacket pocket or bag without taking up too much room. When it's unfolded, you can easily navigate the Z Flip with one hand.

Meanwhile, the Fold is a giant in comparison. The 7.6-inch display when it's unfolded feels like a tablet. I have small hands, which is why this thing intimidates me, but I'm sure even those with large hands can't operate the phone one-handed when it's unfolded.

Also, can we talk about the colors? The Z Flip looks stunning in Mirror Purple, Mirror Black, and Mirror Gold. Unlike the Fold, which is only available in Space Silver and Cosmos Black.

I like to think of the Z Flip as the cooler younger sister of the two who knows how to have fun and doesn't take herself too seriously.

2. A price that's a little easier to stomach

At $1,380, the Z Flip doesn't come cheap. But in comparison to the Galaxy Fold, which costs a whopping $2,000, it's not too bad.

I know the Z Flip has decent specs. And no one should pay over $1,000 for a phone that comes with the same camera sensors you'd find on a budget handset. But I'm pretty sure this is the cheapest foldable we'll get for a while, considering this smartphone form factor is still very new. And, while it remains to be seen, it looks a lot more promising than the $1,500 Motorola Razr.

The minute I saw how much the Fold cost, the allure of a foldable phone immediately vanished. And I assume that's probably what happened with a lot of other people, too.

If anything, the price of the Z Flip sets a lower barrier of entry for foldable phones, perhaps enough so that they'll actually become more mainstream.

3. Hello, durability

Rather than plastic, as featured on the Galaxy Fold, Samsung went with its very own bendable "Ultra Thin Glass." Sure, the company says using glass makes the device slimmer and less distracting without a notch. And that it also protects your screen from scratches. But we can all guess why they went with glass.

In case you forgot, early reviewers of the Fold accidentally damaged their displays because they peeled off the protective layer thinking it was a screen protector.

The Motorola Razr, which also features a plastic foldable display, makes it easy to place your finger in between the hinge and the plastic. So, it's not a great sign for durability.

It also feels a lot cheaper too. If I'm paying that much money for a phone, I want it to feel premium all around.

I'm also interested to see if it makes a difference when it comes to a crease.

4. Hideaway hinge

To add to the durability of the phone, the Z Flip has a "hideaway hinge," which features a cam and follower mechanism (CAM) to ensure that flipping and folding this thing feels stable.

I never thought about the fact that, without a strong hinge, one wrong flip could send the top half of this phone flying. It's pretty funny to picture, until you remember how much this phone costs.

According to Samsung, it can fold over 200,000 times. Which, might be a dig against Motorola.

The hinge also uses Samsung's new "sweeper technology" which comes equipped with nylon fibers that repel dirt and dust.

Seeing as how this technology is new, it's clearly something the Fold doesn't have. And, considering the fact that you might open your phone 200,000 times, I can only imagine the gross stuff that'll get stuck in the hinge every single time you fold it and unfold it.

5. A lot more versatile

One of the coolest things about the Z Flip is that the hinge allows it to stay open at different angles.

Basically, you can set it down like you would a laptop and then adjust the top half as far back as you'd like. The screen can then separate into two parts: a viewing area on the top half and an interaction area on the bottom.

So, if you're watching a video on YouTube, the video appears on top with the ability to comment on the bottom — all without interrupting the the viewing experience.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Fold does come with a multitasking mode that allows you to pull up three different apps at once in both landscape and portrait mode. As for its hinge, though, you can prop it up, sort of. But it's definitely meant to be held.

We'll obviously have to spend some time with the Z Flip before we come to a final conclusion, but I have faith that it'll set a high standard for foldable phones to come.

I mean, after the Fold, the only way Samsung can go is up, right?

"Place your card in a slot in your wallet or billfold without touching another credit card," reads the card-owning guide. "If two credit cards are placed in the same slot your card could become scratched."

That's right, don't even think about letting your precious Apple Card near that trash junking up the rest of your wallet.

But maybe you're not worried about that. You, as a true Apple stan, have set aside an entire sleeve of your leather wallet so that your Apple Card may rest easy on its own personal bed of lambskin.

Well, my good Jobs-head, you've still screwed up.

"Some fabrics," warns Apple, "like leather and denim, might cause permanent discoloration that will not wash off."

The editor

The development environment of WINDEV includes a specific interface and several editors allowing you to create the different elements of your applications.

You probably don't have a virtual reality headset. In that case, you might be wondering why "VR" has been the buzzword for "hot, new, possibly-a-fad tech" the last couple of years, occasionally serving as an easy tech punch line now that hoverboards are finally dead. VR is even showing up as a major plot point in the new seasons of House of Cards and HBO's Silicon Valley, even though most of you out there haven't even tried it yet.

The more curious among you have probably noted hearing one of the following comments in the last 12 months:

"Like 3D movies, regular people just aren't that interested in VR."

"Oculus failing at Best Buy is proof VR is doomed as a mainstream platform."

"Gaming is the only viable future for VR as we know it."

These are all generally sensible and appropriately conservative comments I've heard in recent months from VR skeptics. But according to the people making the biggest bets on the new technology, those comments are as incorporeal as the virtual objects populating VR. Or, in English: bullshit.

Here's why.

First, let's start with the obvious. Hollywood blockbuster directors like Iron Man's Jon Favreau and The Martian's Ridley Scott have both publicly embraced virtual reality as the next storytelling medium with dedicated VR projects and studio ventures. The producers of The Walking Dead just announced a series of VR games based on the hit TV series. And according to some estimates, about $2.3 billion was invested in VR and augmented realty (AR) in 2016 alone.

What all this Hollywood, TV, and investment activity means is that you'll soon be deluged with VR marketing campaigns everywhere you look, even if you currently have zero interest in VR and have never strapped on a VR headset, which, based on my own experience covering the space, seems to be the norm for most people.

So what the hell is going on here? Why is media chatter about VR seemingly on the rise while actual user adoption of VR still fairly minuscule compared to something like, say, smartphones. Or even smartwatches.

At least part of the answer was revealed a few days ago via a report from PricewaterhouseCoopers' (PwC) annual Global Entertainment and Media Outlook, which contained a surprisingly optimistic forecast for VR over the course of the next four years.

Not only does report predict that VR revenue will reach $15 billion across 10 markets (U.S., Japan, China, South Korea, the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Russia, and Italy) by 2021, but the report also claims that VR will add nearly the same revenue as TV advertising during this period.

How? According to PwC, VR video will account for the majority of VR growth in the next few years as the platform, led primarily by mobile VR headset solutions. Ok, that sounds great for the Hollywood studios investing in VR, but with few mobile VR headsets visible on the streets of most major cities, and Samsung recently touting roughly 5 million Gear VRs sold (a good, but not earth-shattering number), what is driving the cash-fueled bets from so many that VR will go mainstream in the next 24 to 48 months?

"We're in a weird place right now with VR because all the players are not aligned ... The winners will be some part of the ecosystem that steps ups and collaborates to see how the different elements of these VR experiences come together."
"We're in a weird place right now with VR because all the players are not aligned," says PwC's Russell Sapienza when I ask why the firm is so bullish on VR video in particular, even though we've yet to see a major hit from the immersive video space. "What we're bullish about is that companies investing in VR will eventually find cohesion with another. The winners will be some part of the ecosystem that steps ups and collaborates to see how the different elements of these VR experiences come together to make something cool."

As for how that excitement around VR will transcend entertainment business players and actually reach currently uninterested consumers in the mainstream, Sapienza explains: "We expect to see campaigns from traditional networks [like Netflix and Hulu] and new VR content right holders to build awareness among consumers regarding the value-added experiences that VR can bring to a video moment or experience."

That sounds promising for the future, but what about right now? Since neither Oculus nor HTC Vive have revealed user numbers, what real indications do we have that VR hasn't already flopped?

For starters, it turns out that a February report that indicated flagging sales of the Oculus Rift at Best Buy stores, including a claim that 200 of what the report called Best Buy "VR pop-ups" had been shuttered due to lack of consumer interest, wasn’t entirely accurate. "[Oculus Rift] space in stores remained the same regardless of product demos, as did the continuation of selling the headset and touch controllers in stores and online," a Best Buy spokesperson told me, while pointing out that the only thing that had been reduced were one-on-one product demos in some stores located in smaller cities. "We have dedicated virtual reality departments in more than 700 of our stores, each with an Oculus Rift presence."

This matches my own experience. During a recent visit to a Best Buy store in Manhattan just a couple of weeks ago, when I asked an employee working in the dedicated Oculus section of the store why the Oculus-branded display was still in place (despite reports to the contrary), he told me that he knew of no change related to Oculus Rift set-ups at Best Buy and even volunteered that (anecdotally) sales of the VR headset had increased month-over-month since it was first introduced into the store (Best Buy's official spokesperson would not disclose official sales numbers for the Rift).

"We continue to be excited about virtual reality, as are our customers, whether they’re using a headset connected to a PC or a smartphone,” said Best Buy's vice president of computing and virtual reality. "In addition to the great devices already available, we look forward to more products, content, and price points joining the space to create even more possibilities for consumers."

And while PwC is predicting that VR video will comprise nearly 60 percent of VR content in the next few years, VR gaming is gaining traction as well. A Sony spokesperson confirmed to me that its PlayStation VR headset has sold over one million units, and a recent Microsoft-hosted VR esports event in New York garnered nearly one million viewers on Twitch, leading to the launch of a VR esports league.

Looking ahead, VR activity is likely to ramp up in coming months as high-end, wireless VR headsets begin to make their way into the market and location-based venues like Imax VR continue to roll out new spaces in major cities.

However, major challenges around high prices, competing software platforms, and a general lack of consumer familiarity with VR still remain and could dampen all the optimistic forecasts and investments looking to push us into a new world of immersive entertainment in coming years. But that's fairly normal for new tech taking its first baby steps into the mainstream consciousness. The real make-or-break test will come from the creators of these virtual experiences.

"The future tends to repeat itself. What we had pre-iPhone was a burst of creativity and it took a while for all the pieces of the ecosystem to come together," says Sapienza. "You will eventually have two or three killer apps, those breakthrough experiences where a consumer will say, 'I want that.' But if you don’t take their breath away, you’ll never get them back. And in fact, they’ll resent for it, because you’ve wasted their time and money."

Microsoft is working on a new design for Windows 10

Microsoft has made several adjustments to its design language over the last few years, starting with Windows 8 and evolving into what we now know as "Microsoft Design Language 2" or MDL2 in Windows 10. With MDL2 being the current design language used throughout Windows 10, Microsoft has plans to begin using a much more streamlined design language with Redstone 3, codenamed Project NEON.

A Metro 2.0?

Cassim Ketfi at Numerama.com confirms our information and has heard Project NEON called "basically Metro 2". That designation refers to the first Metro design language (née Modern) that harkens to Windows Media Center up through Windows Phone 7 and Windows 8.
Metro was the defining look of the Windows Phone OS with strict principles and guidelines. It also kicked off the design movement of flat, chrome-less design focused on simplicity that even iOS and Android now mimic.

Per our sources, Project NEON has been in the works for over a year internally at Microsoft. It builds upon the design language introduced with Windows 10, with its simple and clean interfaces, but adds some much-needed flair to the UI that the current design language just lacks.

Details are still scarce, but we hear some of the new designs in the plans include adding more animations and transitions, with the overall goal of making the UI very fluid and "beautiful" compared to the current, almost static UI that is MDL2. One source familiar with Microsoft's plans described NEON as "Very fluid, lots of motion and nice transitions."

Other things we've heard include app-elements being able to "escape" the borders of a window making for a much more unique experience.
We're still digging for more info regarding what other new improvements are in the works, but from what we've gathered so far, Microsoft is interested in making the UI in Windows 10 far richer, which is excellent news.

For those who like MDL2, don't worry, Project NEON intends to build upon the current design language rather than replace it entirely. This new design language will be a natural evolution to the UI rather than a complete redesign like the transition from Windows 8 to Windows 10. Developers building apps with MDL2 in mind won't have their apps look out of place when Project NEON arrives, but will, of course, have the option to add new design language elements if they wish.

Microsoft also wants to clean up the so-called inconsistencies that MDL2 possesses. As it currently stands, developers can build apps that feature their own context menus, app bars, hamburger menu designs and more, causing for some odd inconsistencies throughout the operating system. Project NEON aims to clean all this up by providing developers with clear and consistent guidelines when designing their apps.

Timeline

Internal plans appear to suggest that the bulk of this new design language will start showing up with Redstone 3 in the early Fall of 2017, but Insiders will likely start seeing these new changes a lot sooner, as Insiders are supposed to start receiving RS3 builds in April-May. There is also a reasonable chance we may see some NEON bits begin to appear in Redstone 2 in early 2017.

Microsoft will continue working on Project NEON throughout Redstone 3's development cycle and leading into Redstone 4 in 2018, where 3rd-party developers will also be able to take advantage of the new design language.

Microsoft has a lot in the pipeline for Windows 10 over the next 18 months, with Redstone 3 seemingly turning out to be a pretty big update for Windows 10, Windows 10 Mobile and Xbox One.

The AirPods were as close as we got to an honest-to-goodness hardware surprise at today’s big Apple event in San Francisco — though anyone who heard tell of the untimely demise of the headphone jack probably could have seen this coming. Pre-Beats, at least, headphones have traditionally been something of an afterthought for the company, as anyone whose ear canals have smarted from its first-generation earbuds will gladly tell you.

These new headphones feel a bit different in that respect — after all, if you’re going to do something as drastic as killing the headphone jack, you ought to offer up more of a consolation than an in-box dongle (the first, and hopefully last, time I’ll ever write that phrase).

As the name implies, the new headphones look pretty much exactly like the company’s EarPods line, with the obvious distinction of being wireless. It’s an interesting aesthetic choice, one that bucks the recent trend of fully wireless Bluetooth headphones, which are largely circular. These maintain the EarPods’ long tail, which actually goes a ways toward helping them fit better in the ear.

As far as how well they’ll actually stay in there if you, say, go for a jog, it’s hard to say, though the buds could certainly benefit for some sort of anchoring system akin to what you get on sportsbuds from companies like JayBird.

The sound quality isn’t bad, though we’ll have to hold off full judgment until we’re able to listen to the things in a less chaotic environment than a press area after an Apple event.

There’s some interesting functionality on-board, as well. There’s a certain benefit to the Apple synergy here — in this case, they pair pretty instantly with your iPhone the moment you open the charging case (which, incidentally looks almost exactly like Glide dental floss, because good design is timeless, etc.). They feature touch functionality, as well, so you can, say, double tap to activate Siri, who will take commands via the built-in mics.
The music also stops automatically when you pull them out of your ear — definitely a nice feature that should save on battery life. Speaking of which, the company is promising five hours of life on a charge, which is actually quite good, if true, beating out the estimates of a lot of other fully wireless buds. That’s augmented by the promised 24 hours of life offered up by the charging case.

At $159, they’re not exactly cheap for a product that will feel like a must upgrade for many iPhone 7 upgraders, but it’s certainly in line with other wireless models.

In that update (or in the Windows 10 Insider Builds you can get if you're a techie or adventurous) you're going to get a lot of nice polish AND the ability to optionally run Linux (ELF) Binaries on Windows 10 at the command line. The feature is the Linux Subsystem for Windows or "Bash on Windows" or sometimes "Ubuntu on Windows." Call it what you like, they're real, and they're spectacular.

Developers can run all their Linux user-mode developer tools like Redis or even TensorFlow (without GPU support).

I went and recorded a 20 min video screencast showing what you need to do to enable and some cool stuff that just scratches the surface of this new feature. Personally, I love that I can develop with Rails on Windows and it actually works and isn't a second class citizen. If you're a developer of any kind this opens up a whole world where you can develop for Windows and Linux without compromise and without the weight of a VM.
