The night my daughter was born I went home to get some sleep, and after tucking in her three older brothers, I sat down at our piano and wrote this song. Her whole life was flashing through my eyes…well, my dream of her life anyway. This brand new tiny baby girl, who couldn’t even communicate with me at all, instantly stole my heart. All I wanted to do was make sure I loved her as well as possible, through every stage of her life, and the verses and chorus combination of this song was my heart that night. Later, after realizing the true pains of her growing older and more independent, I was able to write the bridge.

UPDATE: My daughter is absolutely amazing. She’s now a loving and caring woman. She’s extremely talented in many ways and works hard at whatever she does. She’s a fun and sweet younger sister to her brothers. And now, she is married to a man I deeply respect and love. BUT, regardless of her age and marital status, just like in my dreams…she’s still my baby girl.

For almost twenty years I lived with the hope that we would dance together to this song on her wedding day…you know, during the traditional Father/Daughter dance at the reception. I knew this would require a recorded version of this song that would meet the standards of a beautiful wedding, if it were to happen at all. I certainly didn’t want to push my own agenda, but secretly conspired about the possibility of surprising her with it regardless of what song she chose. And then one day, as the wedding drew closer, she asked me my hearts desire, “Pa”…that’s what she calls me…”can we dance to My Baby Girl at the wedding?” And then we did. And it was wonderful.

This song is a message of life-giving hope for whoever longs for more in this life. God promises that if you search for him, you will find him. He wants to bless you with his presence, with real peace that surpasses whatever circumstance you are in. Let him bless you with his presence. Come drink from the river of God. Jump into the river and receive the healing of God, and become the healing of God in the world.

LISTEN TO THE RIVER: Lee’s Linktree

Psalm 46:1-7 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Ezekiel 47:1-6 The man brought me back to the entrance to the temple, and I saw water coming out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar. He then brought me out through the north gate and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and the water was trickling from the south side. As the man went eastward with a measuring line in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits and then led me through water that was ankle-deep. He measured off another thousand cubits and led me through water that was knee-deep. He measured off another thousand and led me through water that was up to the waist. He measured off another thousand, but now it was a river that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough to swim in—a river that no one could cross. He asked me, “Son of man, do you see this?”

John 7:37-39 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

Revelation 22:1-2 “Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.”

I lay it all out there, letting you hear my raw audio recordings I made while driving my car, to ideas on the piano in my home, all the way through to the end of the process.

It may not interest you at all, and that’s fine. Everyone has their interests. However, if you like to write songs you might really enjoy this. I’d love for you to listen to this audio (45 minutes, sheesh!) and then reach out to me. Let’s talk songwriting! I would love to hear about your process and your story as a songwriter.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Jesus

It was 2009 and I was living in the western cattle town of Woodward, Oklahoma. I remember driving the two-and-a-half-hour drive home from Oklahoma City one evening; I believe it was after a youth ministers gathering. As I often do when I’m alone in the car, I sing, I pray out loud, I cry if I need to…you know, I’m alone so who cares what I do. I count those as sweet moments alone with the Lord. On that drive home, I was contemplating my feelings of isolation and was asking God to help me, to help me feel and know his presence.

Matthew 11:28 has been an important verse to me as far back as I can remember learning Scripture, often reflecting on these words of Jesus when I need comfort. His invitation is always there, and I often need to respond to it. That evening in the car, as I drove, I began to sing this special invitation. And as I sang his invitation, I began to sing my own response. God was calling me to surrender to him again that night. That was part of his invitation to me that night…and I did…again. This song came from a moment in my own life when God called me to surrender to him for my own good.

This song has been on a journey over the years. It was originally recorded in Edmond, Oklahoma with a dear friend, Erick Alexander. Erick produced the song for me and helped me build the song out with instruments and harmonies. Jeff Hall and Addi Panter were also key additions to making this song come a live, with Jeff playing drums and Addie singing vocal harmonies. This first link is the original recording of the song. Of course, it’s also available wherever you listen to music.

After time, this song has been adopted by various church families around the world, and I’m super grateful to United Voice Worship for recording an a cappella version of Come to Me. I am part of the Churches of Christ, who are mostly a cappella in our congregational worship settings by preference and tradition. Shane Coffman, who is a wonderful arranger for the church, helped me refine my own a cappella arrangement, and then United Voice Worship recorded the song. Of course, they added their special and wonderful flair to it to make it amazing. Here is a link to their version. But like the instrumental version, you can find UVW‘s version wherever you listen to music.
