Enjoy the Delta Fair and Music Festival!

Hey all! Have you ever been to the Delta Fair and Music Festival? If not, you’ll have your chance starting today, September 3rd and lasting until September 12th. It’s the perfect Labor Day weekend activity for you, your family, and friends!

You know that the city of Memphis couldn’t let a holiday pass without some sort of music or food festival, lol. TheDelta Fair and Music Festival boasts that it’s the Mid-South’s premier family event. There are so many contests, events, and vendors at the festival this year, that it’s hard to keep up with them all.  There are two national contests: Pillsbury Pet-Ritz Pie Baking Championship and Fleischmann’s Yeast Bake for the Cure Baking Contest, and these take up the Delta Fair’s culinary area.

Since it’s taking place at the Agricenter International (7777 Walnut Grove, Memphis , 38120), 15 minutes from Legacy Farm Apartments, agricenter events will be present as well. There will be competitions, family entertainment and educational farm tours. The interactive exhibits and shows include Open and Jr. Livestock competitions, Tn High School and Jr. Rodeo Competitions and an educational farm tour open daily to school groups and fair goers.

Cooper and Young Night Out!

Hey Legacy Farm Apartments residents! What do you normally find yourself doing on a Thursday Night? If your answer is nothing, then on the first Thursday of every month head down to the corner of Cooper Street and Young Avenue for a fun, filled evening in your favorite Midtown hot spot. This all takes place on Thursday, September 2nd from 5 to 9 pm.

As you stroll around Cooper and Young, you’ll be privy to local Memphis musicians, and fantastic discounts at local shops. You can get anything from garter belts and sushi to Moon pizza and brass cymbals. Yes the brass symbols are random, but some people need them, right?

This is also the time when area independent business owners stay open late and dish it all up with all of you! Make sure that while you’re there, you sign up for the drawings and giveaways; you just may get lucky!

Night Out starts promptly at 5:00 pm. The antique and retail shops are open until 9:00 pm and the restaurants and bars usually stay open until well past midnight. So grab your friends and have a great night out!

India Fest 2010

Did you know that Memphis is home to more than 8,000 people of Indian descent! It’s true, but don’t go thinking that they all share the same culture. Each Indian state is like a country unto itself, with different foods, dress, and even language. About 16 of India’s 28 states will be represented at India Fest 2010 at the Agricenter on Saturday, August 28th from 10 am to 6 pm.

Like many of the other cultural festivals that have hit the Memphis area this summer, the India Fest 2010 is sure to be enlightening and fun for all. It’s always interesting when  you can learn about cultures that aren’t your own. And we all know the best thing about these festivals right? THE FOOD! At each state’s booth, manned by local residents, attendees can sample regional foods. How awesome is that? States will even duke it out in a culture competition showcasing food, dance, and music from each region.

Each year, the festival runs by a theme. This year’s theme is Bollywood. Attendees can watch short films on the history of Indian cinema. Chefs Vish Bhatt of the SnackBar in Oxford, Mississippi, and Chef John Bragg of Circa will lead Indian cooking demos, and plenty of vendors will be on hand peddling traditional Indian garb, jewelry, and other items.

There’s even a kiddie corner for the young ones, where they can dress up like a  Bollywood star! There’ll also be henna, face painting, and an India trivia contest. It’s something for the whole family at India Fest 2010!

Another great thing about the festival is that it’s not far from Legacy Farm Apartments! It’s about 18 minutes away! You can’t beat that.

Expand your cultural horizons at India Fest 2010! Adults are $2 and kids are $1. It’s free for children under 5.

Fresh Fruit at the Collierville Farmers Market

Hey Legacy Farm Apartment Community! I know that I’ve come to you before about the Memphis Farmers Market, but have you ever been to the Collierville Farmers Market?

The Collierville Farmers Market boasts some of the same qualities of the Memphis Farmers Market, such as very fresh produce and meats at a very reasonable price, and the option to support local growers and farmers which in time will help the food economy in Tennessee.

The Collierville Farmers Market takes place every Tuesday in the summer until the end of October, and they all occur at 11 am. Like many other Farmers Markets, at the  Collierville Farmers Market you’ll find a large variety of locally grown produce, flowers, and fresh eggs, as well as local honey & beeswax products, preserves, meat, milk & milk products, baked goods, cookbooks, and wool. Okay, the wool is a little different, but it’s definitely what makes the CFM unique.

The Farmers Market is very easy to get to, seeing as it’s located at 167 Washington Street just off the Collierville Square. So on Tuesday mornings when you want fresh veggies and more, hit up the Collierville Farmers Market for your grocery needs.

Hey Memphis Redbirds fans! Did you see the amazing game between the Redbirds and the Colorado Springs Sky Sox? After sixteen amazing innings, the Redbirds landed an astounding win!

This game was so huge that outfielder Amaury Cazana, who knocked out a walk-off home run to center field, received a shaving-cream pie in the face from third baseman Ruben Gotay. That’s one way to celebrate, right?

Though Amaury Cazana was the star of the game, the bullpen was what really attributed to the game’s spectacular win. Colorado Springs touched Redbirds starter Nate Robertson for five runs on nine hits in five innings. But after the Sky Sox collected a hit and a pair of walks against reliever Renyel Pinto in the seventh inning, their next 27 batters were retired, and 11 of the last 16 struck out. After stretching the game out to 7 more innings, it’s nothing short of amazing that the Redbirds pulled it off.

It’s amazing that the 4000 plus fans stayed in the stands until the end of the game. When it comes to baseball games, i’m normally ready to bring it in by the 7th inning, unless the game is really good. I guess that’s what happened to fans last night.

Can’t wait to see what happens at the next game!

Duck! Red rubber balls are flying your way! Well, they won’t really be flying  your way unless you’re playing in the dodgeball tournament that’s taking place this weekend, August 14th from 9 am to 3 pm at WellWorx (6161 Shelby Oaks Dr.)

Registration is closed for the tournament, so if you attend, you’ll just be a spectator. But don’t worry, adult dodgeball games can get pretty intense. The event is being brought to you by Youth Villages, a private nonprofit organization dedicated to helping emotionally and behaviorally troubled children and their families live successfully. Proceeds from the tournament are going back to Youth Villages.

There will be free food and drinks for participants and spectators. This is sure to be entertaining, and it’s great to see the communities rallying together to benefit the kids. Maybe the game will inspire you to enter the tournament next year, as this is an annual event; the tournament is already in it’s fourth year.

Hey Legacy Farm! As I’m sure you’ve heard by now, tomorrow, August 10 launches Elvis Week 2010. If you’re not a supreme Elvis fan, you may want to steer clear of these events because there will be a whole lot of shakin’ going on!

There are a good amount of events going on that week, which lasts until August 16, and here’s one that looks fun for the Elvis lover in you: Club Elvis. This event takes place on Wednesday, August 11, and is at the Elvis Presley Car Museum in the Graceland Plaza. It’s basically a private party with you and a bunch of other Elvis fans. The DJ will be spinning Elvis cuts all night and a cash bar will be serving adult beverages for those of are of legal age to drink.

You’ll get a wristband once you pay for your ticket, and it allows you to come and go from Club Elvis as often as you like during the evening in order for you to enjoy all the other activities on the property. Tickets are $25; they’ll be available for purchase in-person at the Graceland Guest Services Desk starting on Tuesday, August 10, or at the door of the event if it is not sold out.

Farmers Market

When it comes to getting great deals and expecting the unexpected, the Downtown Memphis Farmers Market will not leave you disappointed.

The Downtown Memphis Farmers Market takes place in Downtown Memphis (obviously) at Central Station, S. Front Street at GE Patterson in the Historic South Main District, and occur every Saturday through October. Admission and parking is free, and there is also pet sitting available so you don’t have to leave your furry babies at home. I don’t know about you but the look on my puppy’s face whenever I leave almost breaks my heart! Almost.

Fresh Produce

At the Downtown Memphis Farmers Market, you get so much more  than produce. This Saturday, you’ll hear live music from Dave Orland (7-8 am), Potlikker (8-10:30 am), and one other artist who will play from 10:30 am until 1 pm.

There’s also a kids craft corner for the kiddies. In honor of the Summer’s Bounty, kids can make their own sunshine.   Join the crafts table at 9:30a.m. and make a paper plate sun. Sure it’s simple, but how much does it really take to keep kids entertained?

Of course some of the best deals on the freshest produce and preserves will be available at the market, so if I were  you, I’d definitely take advantage of them.

Hey Legacy Farm! If you haven’t had a chance to attend one of the Rooftop Parties held on top of the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, this Thursday’s party is your last chance. The Peabody Hotel’s 2010 Rooftop Party Season Finale will be on August 5 from 6 to 10:30 pm.

As with the other parties this season, each one had a unique theme. Thursday night’s theme is a New Orleans theme with Cowboy Mouth (the essence of New Orleans rock n’ roll) as entertainment, Mardi Gras style food, drinks, and decor, and a donation to the Gulf Coast Oil Spill relief efforts.

The rooftop party is the gift that keeps on giving. The Peabody and Rooftop Party beverage partner Miller Coors Memphis will donate 50% of the sales of every Miller beer sold that night to the Memphis-based Ducks Unlimited in support of their Gulf Coast oil spill recovery efforts.

So what’s on the menu? Well, there will be andouille sausage, red beans and rice, muffaletta sandwiches, jalapeno hush puppies, seafood gumbo, shrimp rémoulade shooters, and crawfish beignets. Popular New Orleans drinks, including Hurricanes and Hand Grenades, will be available at the bars.

Admission is $15 and this price includes one drink. This is the perfect evening end for those coming after work, or the perfect evening opener to those who like more of the late night hang outs.
