Wedding Traditions of the Jewish Faith: Learn about some of the beautiful Jewish wedding traditions for weddings in the Jewish community.

1. CHUPPAH | JEWISH WEDDING TRADITIONS

The Chuppah is a canopy under which a Jewish couple stand during their wedding ceremony. It consists of a cloth or sheet, sometimes a tallit, stretched or supported over four poles, or sometimes manually held up by attendants to the ceremony. A chuppah symbolizes the home that the couple will build together. This Chuppah is from Benji and Brendon’s intimate wedding at Sapphire Point in Breckenridge.

2. BREAKING THE GLASS | JEWISH WEDDING TRADITIONS

As the ceremony comes to a close, the groom (or in some instances the couple) is invited to step on a glass inside a cloth bag to shatter it. The breaking of the glass holds multiple meanings. Some experts say it represents the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. Others say it demonstrates that marriage holds sorrow as well as joy and is a representation of the commitment to stand by one another even in hard times. The cloth holding the shards of glass is collected after the ceremony, and many couples choose to have it incorporated into some sort of memento from their wedding day. Remember to yell Mazel Tov! after the glass has been shattered.

3. KIPPAH | JEWISH WEDDING TRADITIONS

A Kippah is a brimless cap, usually made of cloth, worn by male Jews to fulfill the customary requirement held by Orthodox halachic authorities that the head be covered. These are a beautiful blue suede that matched the colors of the wedding.

4. KETUBAH | JEWISH WEDDING TRADITIONS

A ketubah is a special type of Jewish prenuptial agreement. It is considered an integral part of a traditional Jewish marriage, and outlines the rights and responsibilities of the groom, in relation to the bride. In modern practice, the ketubah has no agreed monetary value, and is never enforced, except in Israel. Ketubah signing are done with the Rabbi, couple, the immediate families and typically the wedding party. They are beautiful reverent moments.

5. THE HORA | JEWISH WEDDING TRADITIONS

The hora is a traditional dance performed at Jewish weddings where the newlyweds are lifted into the air while their family and friends dance in circles around them. During the hora, the couple each holds one end of a handkerchief or napkin to signify their union. If you have ever been part of one of these at a wedding reception, you know how much fun they are. Kendall and Spencer are certainly having a blast at their wedding reception at Ten Mile Station.

AN AUSSIE RAISED ABROAD MARRIES THE PILOT OF HER DREAMS

An Australian raised in England meets an international American pilot and love soars! They share a love of travel and adventure so we created a destination wedding in the Rocky Mountains that perfectly matched their personalities and shared interests. Bi-wing planes suspended from the ceiling at the reception hall, as a nod to the groom and that travel is how the couple met. Earthy chocolate and forest green invitations stamped closed with gorgeous red sealing wax. Emerald jewelry for the bride and deep forest green bridesmaid dresses.

TENDER MOMENTS, FIRST LOOKS, STUNNING SCENERY AND PHOTOS 

Capturing a tender moment with the father of the bride: Being raised predominately in England, the bride wanted to gift her parents with embroidered cloth handkerchiefs, to wipe their happy tears on this special day. Although the original is very good, the tweaks I made seemed to satisfy my boozy friends over the Christmas holiday quite well. Many in my tribe are currently or formerly in the events industry and they know how to enjoy a party particularly with holiday craft cocktails.

Try this delicious recipe out at your next holiday party especially in the fall and winter. Let me know how you like it and any customization’s you made. Although this recipe is per cocktail, I often batch the mix then add the tequila to make each drink to order….

CAN’T KEEP MY EYES OFF OF YOU, COUPLE’S FIRST DANCE

Lindsay and Bobby were referred to me by another wedding planner and friend, Carly Witzburg, for dance lessons and to create a routine for their first dance as husband and wife. It was such a delight helping them and as you’ll see in the video below they totally NAILED their dance! 100 percent.

They danced to a live band which always makes it even trickier since you practice with the original track but the band was so wonderful to follow the tempo needed and to match the style of the original version as closely as they could. Since I was off the evening of their wedding and it was local, I had the privilege of seeing their hard work in person. I was one proud dance teacher. Special thanks to Mark Morarie Films for the beautiful video.

A Roaring Good Time! 1920’s Wedding with Swing Dancing

The Great Gatsby took place in the roaring ’20’s; the height of the Jazz Age and everything swing! A wonderful theme for a unique wedding, complete with costumes, a jazz trio and swing dance lessons.

Sunset Reception under the Stars 

What could be better that a wedding set out under the stars? In our opinion, nothing! Brooke and Ryan’s private residence in Boulder, Colorado was a perfect choice for the ceremony and reception because well just look at the photos from Adam Houseman Studios and you will see.

Both were held outside in the backyard and the weather was spectacular. Guests enjoyed dining at community tables under the setting sun while listening to the soft sounds of jazz by Odessa Rose. Everyone dressed the part in their vintage attire and had a rousing good time sipping champagne and custom made cocktails. After dinner, the dance floor opened beneath market lights with the stars surrounding the couple and guests and the party began…

The Dance Lessons Begin…

Having dance lessons at a wedding or event is a fabulous way to get the party started! Especially if the band or DJ you’ve hired is in a certain genre. This allows guests to feel comfortable on the dance floor and to take part in the dances of that era or genre of music. For Brooke and Ryan’s wedding, which was Great Gatsby themed, guests were excited to learn swing moves from the 1920’s to the 1940’s from a professional dance instructor. Encouraging everyone out on the dance floor with fun and laughter helps get through the potentially awkward time after first dances. Plus, everyone leaves with some new steps they can use to impress their friends at the next event! The lesson was a big hit as you can clearly see from the photographs.

The Teachers Cut Loose

After the official lesson is over the dance instructors can show more advanced moves. Laura and Miles provided swing dance entertainment for guests as well as some motivation to keep grooving.

Rustic Mountain Wedding Planning and Photography

Haley and Garett came from Kansas to Florissant, Colorado to celebrate their destination wedding weekend. Tihsreed Lodge wedding venue was the perfect rustic mountain location to host their closest family and friends. They are a super laid back and outdoorsy couple and wanted their wedding to reflect that for their guests. We were honored to both coordinate and capture their special day.

Intimate Wedding with Family and Friends

The couple chose to incorporate little details into their day that came from family. Their handmade wooden ring box had a deer etched into the top. The shawls the bride and bridesmaid wore, to keep out the chilly mountain air, were handmade by Haley’s mother. The custom made guest favors were coasters from slabs of wood, etched with mountains and their initials. Bringing in special items like this makes everything so much more meaningful. We loved helping them fit these details into their day!

THE CEREMONY: A TIPI TENT AND RUSTIC CHARM

Haley and Garett’s wedding ceremony was held under a unique tipi (teepee/tepee) style tent from Under the Sky event rentals. This is not your average white wedding tents. Made with wood poles, carpeted flooring and draped with market lights, this sturdy rustic tipi was the perfect way to keep their guests warm while incorporating the mountain views and ever changing spring weather conditions.

The tent was later converted to reception space for dining, followed by live music, a surprise from the bride and dancing.

THE RECEPTION: AN EXTRA SPECIAL SERENADE  

Haley and Garett had a couple of special surprises during their wedding reception. They rode into the Tihsreed Lodge on horses… well, children’s stick horses to be exact but horses nonetheless. Haley then surprised her groom with a special serenade on the ukulele and you can see from the look on Garett’s face that he was smitten! The Father Daughter dance was also a sight to be seen with choreographed moves that got the party started. To say these things were awesome would be an understatement especially the ukulele serenade – way to go Haley!

Marriage Proposal Tip 1: Timing is EVERYTHING!

You might be planning an elaborate surprise engagement – but make sure you build in some wiggle room. Your significant other doesn’t know what you’re planning and life happens. They might have to work; they might get sick. Make sure you build some flexibility and even a backup plan into your marriage proposal plans.

Marriage Proposal Tip 2: Curb Your Crazy

You don’t want to be super secretive and give off the wrong vibe. Keep the secret calls and covert operations to a minimum. One person told me that her boyfriend had been acting so strangely while planning the proposal that she thought he was going to break up with her! So, take it easy, take a breath, and DON’T FREAK THEM OUT.

Get a professional photographer or videographer. Seriously! You both are going to want to remember this forever in all it’s glory. Plus you’ll want to share it with all your family and friends so they can experience the moment with you.

Marriage Proposal Tip 4: Be Careful, Head’s Up!

Be extra careful when you’re proposing in nature. You don’t want to lose the ring in a swiftly moving body of water, a snow drift or accidentally drop it off a cliff. Or in this couples story, drop it into Lake Dillon – he didn’t I promise!

Don’t propose in front of large groups. It’s way too much pressure for many people. You can always have the option of a big, engagement-announcement party, with all of your people, afterwards. Speaking of parties…

Make sure to pop the question when your significant other is looking and feeling good. You know if your significant other is somebody who wouldn’t be caught dead in front of a camera without makeup/new haircut/eyebrows on fleek. So, plan something that lets them feel their best.

Watch where you put that ring! Seriously. I know you’ve seen it in the movies but DON’T put the ring in the cake for them to find. They might eat it. Similarly, don’t put it into their drink because they might just swallow it. (And you won’t like what happens after that.) In short: Protect the ring – and your loves digestive system.

Luxury Wedding in Scottsdale, On Cloud Woody

If you want to see what a luxury backyard wedding looks like then you will LOVE today blog post about Kendra and Jamie’s gold and blush backyard soiree in Scottsdale, Arizona. It ranks as one of my all time favorites!  It sits neck and neck with her sister Kaitlin’s wedding. Although both weddings could not have been more different.

First Kaitlin + Jon’s Wedding

Like I mentioned, in 2013, I planned a wedding for Kendra’s sister at their uncle’s home in Evergreen, Colorado. It was an instant connection with the families! They are some of my favorite people! They are loving, authentic, kind and super fun!! The wedding was a whimsical rustic mountain affair to remember!!

Then Kendra + Jamie’s Wedding

So when Kendra got engaged to her sweetheart, Jamie,  I was unbelievably honored to be asked to plan their wedding in Scottsdale, Arizona at their parent’s home. This one was a luxury backyard wedding to remember! The sparkle, the detail, the music, the wood-fired pizza! They even brought the vintage Ford out, from Colorado, so Kendra’s dad could “walk” both girls down the aisle in this beauty. I highly recommend watching their wedding video. It will warm your heart and show so much more of the story of the day. Watch for the bride’s entrance in that amazing vintage car.

Siblings with Style
