<p>Something shifts in May.</p>
<p>The mornings are lighter. The markets are filling up with things that are actually, genuinely spring — asparagus, fresh peas, strawberries, artichoke, herbs that smell like the season itself. The body, if you&#8217;ve been eating with the season, has done a lot of clearing work over the past two months. April moved a lot. May gets to refine.</p>
<p>This month we begin the gentle turn from clearing to cooling. The heavy lifting of Kapha season is behind us. What comes next is a softening — we keep the momentum (bitter greens, light grains, digestive spices) but we start making room for the cooling, hydrating, liver-supportive foods that will protect us as Pitta builds through the summer.</p>
<p>This is one of the most delicious months to eat with the season. I hope you feel that in this month&#8217;s menu!</p>
<h3>The Big Idea for May</h3>
<p>We are starting the transition from Kapha to Pitta season — from clearing to cooling, from heavy to light, from internal to expansive. The goal this month is to carry the clearing energy of spring forward while beginning to protect the body from the heat that is quietly building.<br />
<u><br />
That means:</u></p>
<ul>
<li>Continuing to favor bitter, astringent, and pungent foods — but softening the most heating spices</li>
<li>Welcoming spring&#8217;s genuinely cooling foods: fresh peas, strawberries, cucumber, mint, rose</li>
<li>Keeping agni (digestive fire) strong, but not stoked so high it tips into inflammation</li>
<li>Making lunch the anchor meal, letting breakfast get lighter, keeping evenings simple</li>
<li>Supporting the liver and lymph while the detox window is still open — this is the tail end of it</li>
</ul>
<h3>What&#8217;s in Season</h3>
<p>Asparagus. Artichoke. Fresh peas. Strawberries. Beets. Fennel. Spring onions. Dandelion greens. Arugula. Fresh mint, parsley, chives. Rose petals.</p>
<p>These are not incidental — they are spring&#8217;s medicine. Asparagus and artichoke are among the most liver-supportive foods available to us in any season. Strawberries are mildly astringent and cooling in a way that makes them genuinely appropriate right now (not just delicious). Fennel and mint begin shifting our spice and herb use toward the cooling end of the spectrum.</p>
<p>If you can access a farmers market this month, this is the moment. The produce is at its most alive.</p>
<h3>A few things to keep in mind</h3>
<p>The dryness that shaped our winter and early spring is easing for many of us — but if you&#8217;re still feeling it in your tissues, sinuses, or joints, continue honoring that. A small amount of good fat at each meal (ghee, olive oil, tahini) is still appropriate. Don&#8217;t overcorrect into aggressive drying just because Kapha season is winding down.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve been consistent with the spring clearing protocol, you may notice this month that your digestion feels cleaner, your energy is more even, and the heaviness of winter has genuinely lifted. That&#8217;s the work paying off.</p>
<p>And if you&#8217;re just joining us, or if winter got away from you a little — this is a beautiful month to begin. The season is forgiving right now.</p>
