Leona launches Hackney Academy

Last week Leona caught up with Plan B and Radio 1 DJ, Trevor Nelson, to launch the BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra Academy.

Leona is thrilled to be an ambassador for the Academy, which offers Hackney teenagers the chance to try out fashion, radio, film and music through a series of masterclasses, as well as providing practical advice on everything from CVs to interviews.

The Academy is running between June 1st-22nd in the run-up to the Hackney Weekend and you can get involved by emailing takeiton@bbc.co.uk.

I remember as a little girl dressing up, putting red lipstick on and singing along to ‘I will always. Love you’ on the coffee table in our living room. I knew every single word to all of Whitney Houstons songs and I remember her inspiring me to listen to the power of song and voice.

I’ll never forget you Whitney, your the voice of a generation and an inspiration to every singer and artist.

Talenthouse Winner Lilyana Maslenishka

Leona says that the quality of the Talenthouse designs made it hard for her and her team to come to a decision: “We all spent so long going through each and every design. I was amazed and impressed by the care, time and effort people put in.” In the end, it was Lilyana’s submission that stood out most to the performer, who chose her design to be developed by Leona’s team into a reality. Leona wears the winning design at the Royal Variety Performance 2012 during the finale performance with Cee Lo Green and is pictured wearing the dress meeting Princess Anne.
