wardrobe planning: spring 2022

it really feels like spring took ages to arrive this year. now that we are all (at least in our part of the globe) re-emerging into some kind of brave new world, the current mood seems to be we're all trying to figure out how to get dressed again.

during the last two pandemic years, 'fashion' was the last thing on my mind. the background stress of all that was going on in our country and the world kept my attention firmly on running the gears of wfh/daily life. however, this extended break from wardrobe shopping was actually quite helpful. it felt like an extreme ascetic design experiment – if you're not really going anywhere except to run errands or go for a walk at the park, what do you reach for time and again from your closet and why? now that we're doing more things and starting to travel again, what's essential when we're thinking of buying something new?

my core wardrobe criteria can be represented as a Venn diagram of comfort + style + joy. since the pandemic, comfort has become even more paramount in what i choose to keep or add to my closet. my style ethos has not changed much since i started the blog: keep it minimal with classic staples that will work for years to come. the joy aspect is new-ish; i'm trying to add a bit of delight in the details these days because it's a nice visual reminder to not take things too seriously. any additions will either fulfill a functional wardrobe need, replace/upgrade something that has worn out, or (in the case of accessories) be a functional item with unique qualities that spark joy.

hits/purchases:

a slouchy teddy-ish camel/tan coat: not a spring purchase, but now is a great time to find one or two f/w foundations on sale. i had been looking for a cozy teddy textured coat like this for ages and all the ones i tried on just...made me look like i was wearing a bathmat. after giving up on the idea, i happened upon this interesting French brand called American Vintage. very into the more subtle nubby texture, straightforward wool content, and the layering-friendly, oversized fit.
a light/medium weight beige open cardigan: another find by American Vintage – most of my knits are cardigans; i find them the most versatile for daily wear and also for travel. in the last few years the ones i've worn the most are the open front styles; very minimal and ideal for when you need a relaxed, put-together layer that's not a structured blazer.
velour tracksuit for self care time & weekend lounging: this is one of those hero H&M pieces that is worth getting in a few colorways. (longtime readers may remember my favorite H&M yohji-esque sweatpants -- 8 years on, they're still going strong!) the set manages to reference the Bennifer 1.0 era vibes just enough without the late '90s extreme low rise issues. super plushy and comfy! (N.B.: the hoodie runs tts but is a somewhat cropped fit; go one size down on the matching pants as they run long and a tad large in the waist.)
faux leather leggings: i lived in leggings for the majority of 2020 and 2021, so i got these to replace and upgrade my worn-out pair of coated black leggings that pinch uncomfortably at the waist. these are slightly thicker and actually have a realistic leather texture with the right amount of matte sheen, yet stretches nicely while holding you in – the practical, machine-washable version of those $$$$$ leather ones by The Row.
Polene numéro Un nano bag: this purchase fills an accessory need for the post-2020/new normal: a stylish mini crossbody in a carefree leather for running errands that's easily cleanable, and holds all the essentials (it fits a kindle!) including mask and hand sanitizer. over the last few years i've downsized from many of my larger bags. i wanted a pinky beige bag for spring/summer that would also work as a lighter neutral for f/w. the shape also reminds me of an angry dumpling and makes me smile whenever i wear it (see in ootd on insta). very happy with the quality, design and usability so far (will do a more detailed review after longer-term use).
Margiela zip card holder wallet (Saint Laurent also has a similar one): when my decade-old CdG wallet finally gave out in 2018, i replaced it with a Saint Laurent compact card case to experiment with wallet downsizing. it has held up superbly over the last few years and the card case format has been very practical, so i recently got a slightly longer zip style that can hold a bit more (Metrocard, insurance card etc).

misses:

Vanessa Bruno bucket bag: i'd been low key browsing for a more ergonomic medium everyday bucket-style bag since i parted with the Mansur Gavriel bucket bag some years ago (the regular size MG was alas too bulky and never quite softened enough to mold to the body for shoulder/crossbody wear, plus the drawstring tie closure was fiddly). unfortunately this VB bag was a disappointment in two colors and both sizes. the design details were on point: thumbs up for the multiple detachable strap options and metal feet on the bottom – i really wish more designers would include feet on bags! but the leather quality (it wrinkled and creased awkwardly) just wasn't quite there, even on sale. the search continues...

wishlist:

a prince of wales check long blazer/jacket – something that's missing in my wardrobe is a midweight jacket that's warmer than a trench but lighter than a leather jacket. thinking about adding this classic check to round out my very tiny "haberdashery" section of tailored jackets in menswear fabrics. maybe watching all those episodes of The Crown during lockdown has had some influence, ha!

wardrobe editing tip:

the next time you find yourself itching to buy, say, a new pair of jeans, add to cart but don't check out. block off some time and do a mini Kondo assessment of that specific wardrobe category: try on every single pair of jeans that you currently own and sort into three piles (keep, sell/donate, repair/alterations). this exercise worked well when i recently felt the urge to buy a few pairs of skinny jeans on sale (spoiler alert, i don't need any more jeans!). at the end of this denim Kondo, i managed to do the following:

avoided several redundant impulse buys
confirmed that i could part with several ill-fitting pairs that i never reached for anyway
rediscovered the excellent quality, flattering fit, and all-around comfort of the jeans that i am keeping, which in turn inspired some new ideas of how to wear them
and bonus – cleaned up and reorganized the denim section of my closet.

inspiration:

i've been catching up on all six seasons of the Queer Eye reboot and it's such a balm for the soul after the past two years and the daily news cycle. Gardener's World is another wonderful show that i got into in 2020 and inspired me to start my mini veg garden last summer. now that the weather is finally warming up, i'm making the effort to get out into the botanical gardens and parks as often as possible.

finally, taking a page from Ross Gay's Book of Delights and trying to make it a daily practice to appreciate life's small joys.

growing bush beans in my veggie garden last summer

hello again, gosh it feels quite rusty to be back here and writing in this space after all this time.

for the past decade plus, this blog has been a regular chronicle of style discoveries and inspirations, but at some point a few years ago i felt a bit of inspiration drought. what began as a bit of a sabbatical turned into a year, then two, then March 2020 hit. amidst everything in 2020 and 2021, writing about cute bags and mindful wardrobes felt at worst morally tone deaf and at best completely irrelevant. but i suppose there is a kind of courage in seeking out beauty in everyday life, even when it feels like the world is ending on a weekly basis. we are resilient, and it's starting to feel like a new spring; a kind of existential and aesthetic re-emerging.

so here we are, now almost-spring again four years later. my sense of time pre-2020 feels stuck in a funny mirror. the funny thing is, Fashion Time feels like much the same. i think of it in terms of Phoebe Philo's reign at Celine – 2018 felt like the end of a style era, even before the balm of elastic-waist soft pants took over our daily WFH outfits. the fashion landscape has changed a ton – designers and labels that defined the 2000s and 2010s left the scene; industry icons passed away; "the Bushwick Birkin" went viral. in light of all this change, it feels apropos to share some thoughts on what i've learned about what has been inspiring me anew, and what style means to me now.

now, raise your hand if you feel like you took a fashion nap in early 2020 and woke up back in...2001. while i can't say i'm feeling the full on revival of early aughts style, i am really inspired by shopping my closet currently and revisiting my vintage pieces with a new eye. in short, creatively remix to breathe new life into (favorite) old things.

this speaks to probably the most dreaded conundrum we've all experienced – i have a closet full of clothes, but nothing to wear! the fashion system hard-wires us to continually seek out The New, but the funny thing is, The New is always somehow tied to cyclical revisions of the past. it's fun and incredibly liberating to play with this concept in your own wardrobe. case in point, i recently "remixed" my vintage 1990s Coach bag that i got in 2011.

the problem: it had been sitting on my closet shelf for the last few years looking...a bit blah. i hadn't reached for it for quite some time. don't get me wrong: the material quality and craftsmanship and design usability are as excellent as it was when i bought it more than a decade ago. it just needed something extra. the solution: that x-factor turned out to be an inexpensive, fun bag strap from Amazon. is it a Fendi-inspired dupe? absolutely. do you need to splurge at the Fendi price point to get the same effect? absolutely not. the cool thing is that a leather guitar-style strap has the dual effect of refreshing something old in my closet while also making it even more user-friendly – the wider strap is very comfy for shoulder and crossbody wear (although depending on your height, it may be a more 'cropped' crossbody fit). and while we're on the topic of Coach, i've been very impressed by their SLGs and overall design vibes the last few years. their wide leather novelty bag straps in particular are some of the best quality-for-value and most versatile wardrobe accessories.

wardrobe planning: spring 2018 [update]

i'm convinced that spring this year will be condensed into about a week and a half before it will be time to break out the Birks, sigh. on the other hand, i'm feeling more inspired this season than last year. and something about a baby Kate looking wistful in a Parisian cafe just makes me smile.

here are some updates on the wardrobe planning front this season.

hits/purchases:
a.p.c. demilune bag – this bag has been on my radar for a number of years now, and after the MG circle crossbody (see below) didn't work out, i ended up getting this instead as an everyday compact crossbody that i could also bring as a day bag for travel. love the double zipper closure and simple, clean shape.
c/e wide leg crop jeans – found this pair on sale, and it has all the good Jane Birkin jean vibes. now just need the weather to warm up enough for cropped denim!
Leuchtturm notebooks – i've started the habit of keeping a little notebook with me to jot down thoughts, lists, and other sundries. i like the dotted version that give you flexibility to write/bullet journal/sketch as needed.
schutz loafer/mule slides – love these. Schutz is one of the shoe brands i've discovered over the last year or two that consistently comes out with on-point designs, uses quality leather construction, and often clocks in at very reasonable prices. they have a nice mix of out-there and classic designs every season, and pretty much always looks way more expensive than it is. their heels are great too. definitely check in regularly in their section at the Outnet for deals on a wide selection of their styles.
a couple of oversized sweatshirts – an essential lazy weekend staple. also great as a travel layer.

misses:
Mansur Gavriel circle crossbody – oof, i got this in the calf leather, and it was quite disappointing in person. the leather felt thin and cardboard-y and rather fragile, and the interior suede lining also felt thin and flimsy. the zipper also did not glide smoothly up and around the opening, catching each time at the top of the side gusset. IMO the quality of zippers definitely make or break a bag, so this one was very quickly returned.

added to the list:
a slouchy navy sweater – when you have an image in your mind of something, and then you find it. so good.

inspiration:
Catwalk (1995) (also here) thank goodness for Youtube or else i doubt i would have ever found this. this is a gem of a vintage fashion documentary featuring Christy Turlington and all the other '90s Supers just being young and working and trying to figure out their lives. they don't make fashion films like this anymore...everything i've seen lately feels so polished and PR. have you seen this one?

style notes: lessons i've learned pt.i

it's been nearly a decade since i started this blog, and it feels apropos to reflect on some things i've learned along the way.

one of my biggest takeaways from a number of years of shopping and periodic wardrobe editing is: be your own design advocate.

what does this mean? simply put, it means pay attention to your habits, lifestyle, and personal preferences and how they relate to what works and what doesn't in your wardrobe. this is not revolutionary style advice – "buy for your lifestyle" pops up in nearly every style manual out there. but actually following this through can be tricky.

why? well, one of the reasons is that we live in an aspirational world where the cultural current (and especially the fashion industry) pushes us to always want more. the more unattainable something is, the bigger the cult status. which brings me to Exhibit A: The Birkin.

a number of years ago, i definitely had The Birkin at the top of my fantasy timeless/holy grail accessories wishlist. but now, knowing myself better, i'm able to look at it with a more critical eye. is it iconic? absolutely. but if i could afford a Birkin tomorrow, i doubt i would buy it simply because i don't think i'd get real use out of it in my day-to-day life due to its design (the rather fussy opening/closure, the handheld-only carry option, the weight of the bag when empty). it may be the perfect bag for others for those same reasons, but i know it's not the ideal one for me. on an aesthetic level, i can appreciate it as a beautiful (museum) object, but i can appreciate it and many other beautiful things from afar without needing to want it in my life. that's a cool, empowering, liberating feeling.

another reason why "buying for your lifestyle" is challenging is figuring out what gels with your lifestyle takes time – some of my own wardrobe insights took years to really coalesce into an 'aha' moment. that's okay, because personal style is an organic process, not an algorithm or a numbers formula.

i know now, for instance, that a beautiful but delicate bag that i feel like i have to handle with kid gloves is a bag that just won't work for me (case in point: a beautiful vintage 1990s Chanel lambskin bag that i bought, couldn't bring myself to wear regularly, and ultimately sold). my current wardrobe motto is: use all the things. if something feels too precious and i just can't get over that feeling, or if i can't effortlessly integrate it into my daily, carefree life, it doesn't belong in my wardrobe. sometimes, something is just perfect in theory but impractical in real life. case in point: the lovely SC bag (regular size) that i loved, finally got, and eventually sold because the bag was just too big and the weight too heavy for everyday use. whatever the reasons, ultimately the design characteristics determine if something has staying power in my wardrobe.

i get this question a lot from readers: "how can i build a functional and timeless handbag collection when i'm just starting out?"

wardrobe planning: spring 2018

the inspiration: a new minimalism, two decades ago and now.

there's snow blanketing everything as i write this, but i am firmly in the mood for spring.

wardrobe planning this time of year always comes upon the heels of spring cleaning and decluttering. this season is mostly about style as a state of being at ease, and embracing new shapes and silhouettes that will complement existing foundation pieces.

on the list:

a new denim silhouette: the cropped boot (also love Veronica Beard's darkwash take and this C/E version) – i picked up a pair of j.crew's demi boot jeans over the holiday sales, and am hooked on this new style. all the benefits of a bootcut jean without the hem-dragging downsides. also, any jean that shows off the ankle and a cute shoe is a winner in my book.

Mansur Gavriel circle crossbody (more colors) – when MG first debuted the circle bag in the larger size, i didn't pay much attention as it seemed impractical in the hatbox size. this small version is ideal as a crossbody for day, and i plan on using it as a little clutch / minaudiere for special occasions.

loafer mule/slides – as someone who takes shoes off as soon as she gets home, i am pretty excited that these loafer-mules are pretty much designed for people like me. (also an ideal style for when you're going over to friends' homes where shoes-off is de rigueur...)

soft leather slip-on loafers – i've worn out a few pairs of flats and these stylish soft loafers will do just fine for the weekday rotation, and for stashing in my bag as a spare pair. for leather shoes, can't beat this price.

a simple slouchy leather tote – i've been feeling a bit of accessory ennui over the last year or so. this rather inspired design by rag & bone has all the good relaxed minimalist vibes.

relaxed cotton poplin oxford shirts – a few of these in classic white, blue, and stripe to replace some oxford shirts in colors/patterns that i've donated recently.

cotton poplin layered shirt – i like this sleeveless riff on the classic poplin oxford shirt, with a few subtle details to add more interest. also ideal for layering under spring cardigans and jackets.

simple A-line cotton/linen dress – love this latest piece from the IDLF collection. simple dresses like this one in natural materials are always so hard to find! perfect for the weekend farmer's market, or browsing the stacks at The Strand.

purchased:

velour sweatshirts – i have a small but regularly-worn stash of sweatshirts, and added a few of these velvety cotton velour sweatshirts to the mix over the post-holiday sales. very cozy, and easy to style with some statement jewelry as a casual/dressy top.

Botkier convertible clutch/crossbody – picked this up on sale over the holidays, and it has not disappointed. very spacious and stylish while still keeping the profile of a classic clutch. the leather is thick and smooshy, and the two included/detachable straps make this super versatile.

inspiration:

last year felt perpetually apocalyptic with all the political and retail disasters. culturally, i feel like i blinked and now the Kardashians have truly taken over every style and media outlet, gah! taking refuge in my forever style icons (CBK, Jane Birkin, Christy Turlington) and comedy/cool lady inspirations: Issa Rae (if you haven't seen Insecure, go stream it now!); Tracee Ellis Ross. happy International Women's Day!

Hi Kate, great question! and my apologies for not getting to your question sooner.

a quality black blazer is definitely an essential that everyone should have in their closet. it can go from being formal work attire to business casual to weekend chic, depending on how you style it. in terms of overall good value in terms of fit and material, i would recommend J.Crew's version in Super 120s wool. it has a classic proportion (hits at high hip, tailored through the shoulder and arms, silhouette skims the natural waist) for a woman's suiting blazer, and pairs easily with suiting pants/skirt, or separates for a business casual environment.

for a more gamine but still classic style, i also like Everlane's little black blazer in a wrinkle-free wool. pair with the matching cropped trousers for a great feminine and modernized take on the traditional suit.

if you want to add another option to your wardrobe rotation, a great variation on the classic is J.Crew's skinny lapel blazer in a stretch-wool fabrication – the little bit of stretch is always a plus for a more comfortable fit.

finally, if you have a bit more in your budget to splurge, Theory makes a great suiting blazer every season that will take you from interview to the corner office.

foundations: the 10 best winter essentials under $200

having recently survived the onslaught of Bomb Cyclone here on the east coast, i wanted to share some of the hardest working winter essentials in my wardrobe.

winterwear of years past used to be clunky, heavy, and oh-so-unstylish. but thanks to the tech advances of new fabrics and diversification of price points in the last decade or so, i think we're at a sweet spot right now for stylish winter pieces.

these are my picks to get you through every winter in warm and cozy fashion:

1. a minimalist down coat // a down coat in luxuriously fluffy 80/20 down and feathers is the perfect winter topper. the minimalist styling means you can easily swing this day-to-night.
2. the best oversized wool scarf // over the years, i've found that nothing quite keeps the windchill out like this one. this classic will take you through the big chill, year after year.
3. ugg shearling boots // unabashedly on my list because when everything else is at subzero degrees, my feet are always toasty when i'm wearing these. (tip: the black or grey versions are the easiest to style.)
4. sorel rugged snow boots // still the best for trekking fearlessly through sidewalk slush lakes and navigating icy steps.
5. leather smart gloves // i gifted these to everyone on my list this Christmas. i love that the design doesn't scream 'i'm a tech product!' and nothing beats a cashmere-lined glove.
6. ultralight down vests // i have a few of these in different neutral colors and they're always on rotation year-round. during the winter, they're fantastic as a light but warm layer under more tailored blazers, jackets, and topcoats.
7. thermal leggings // long johns reinvented. minimalist, functional, essential.
8. thermal foundation garments // see above.
9. classic cashmere knits // nothing beats a cashmere pullover for throwing over your base layers. they're pricier than other natural knits, but the silky light weight + maximum warmth combo is worth it.
10. a chunky, oversized cardigan aka 'sweater coat' // i love its cozy, Sunday-morning-coffee-and-Times vibe . bonus: it's also a super chic + seasonless classic for travel!

the find: the luxe reversible shearling coat

the outside world is a flurry of white right now. naturally, i'm dreaming of shearling everything.

(since they came up with "polar vortex" a few years ago, i haven't been able to keep track of all the neologisms for winter snowstorms up here on the east coast. i can't really process "bomb cyclone".)

if you've been wishlisting a proper shearling coat and waiting for a deal, you're in luck – Vince has some gorgeous luxe shearling coats on major sale right now. i'm a fan of this cozy (and reversible!) long version available in two colorways, and there's also this lovely shorter option with an oversize shawl collar that converts into a hood.

i like the simple and timeless design. no frills, just shearling. there's a bit of The Row in this style of coat. at this price point, i think it's an excellent splurge that will last year after year.

wardrobe building 101: the perfect convertible clutch

the perfect convertible evening clutch is one of those wardrobe essentials that's curiously hard to find.

it's a bit of a goldilocks game. evening bag options are often too small, too much bling, too much logo, or just too expensive given the cost per wear ratio. one of my pet peeves is the pretty but purely ornamental evening clutch/minaudiere that can barely fit a phone, lipstick, and my keys.

this Botkier Bleecker clutch is on sale (more colors here), and checks all my boxes for a universal evening bag.

the pebbled leather is durable but soft and roomy, and the overall design looks minimal but elegant – suitable for a variety of occasions and dress codes. it looks more expensive than it is – always a great X factor when it comes to accessories. and the addition of the two shoulder straps (one wide strap that looks cool and sportif, one slim leather strap that's got a more formal vibe) is genius and a great value.

style notes: reflections on an edited wardrobe

recently, i went to the Met and saw a fascinating exhibit.

while strolling through the American Wing, i saw out of the corner of my eye a tidy, tiny closet. i had to do a double take because it was hiding in plain sight in the middle of a pass-through corridor. the exhibit – titled 'Sara Berman's Closet' – was striking in its austerity, especially given its proximity to a neighboring exhibit space showcasing the elaborate, turn-of-the-century dressing rooms of a socialite and her daughters.

one of the most striking aspects of Sara Berman's closet, of course, is the very modern minimalism of it all. the perfectly folded piles of clothing, the absence of clutter, the all-white palette of her wardrobe in her later years – it all references many cultural notes in our spark-joy-infused times. the aesthetic was equal parts The Row and Uniqlo.

it also got me thinking about one of the main questions that inspired this blog, nearly eight years ago – how does one develop a personal style? what do the clothes we wear say about who we are?

i really admire Ms. Berman's focus and clarity. however, i don't think i could adhere solely to a tiny, all-white wardrobe. i have too many meaningful objects and stories in the pieces in my closet to be able to pare it down to such an extreme. for those of us who aspire to have a wardrobe that's thoughtfully edited, i think it's important to acknowledge the tension between the desire for minimalism and the excess of life. we don't have to stick to an artificial, highly theoretical formula of 20, 30, or 50 wardrobe items. seasonal decluttering is great, but finding a place for a special, sentimental piece is just as important.

it occurred to me that sometimes i wake up and feel like a monochromatic minimalist, and other days i feel like channeling Iris Apfel. i think i'm okay with both.

wardrobe building 101: the pretty + versatile dress

style tip: at the end of summer/start of fall, great deals can be had for certain perennial wardrobe staples.

one of these staples is the pretty + versatile sundress, ideal for any number of events and special occasions that may pop up on your social calendar during the warmer months – weddings, anniversaries, barbecues, graduations, baptisms, etc. i do think the sundress is a bit underrated in terms of its versatility. i love a fuller skirt for comfort and dancing. you can layer with a cardigan or jacket to take these into fall, and add some ankle boots or tall boots to the mix for an easy fall weekend look.

over the years, one of my most reliable sources of the sundress is j.crew, and lately they've been very on point with the quality and designs on their s/s dresses (like this pretty gingham number, this midi in classic eyelet, or this breezy cotton-linen indigo version).

on a somewhat more whimsical note, i am totally feeling the ballerina-off-duty ball skirt (also on sale in a darker pink).

a tulle ball skirt is more 'wildcard', but IMO makes a statement in all the right ways and is a year-round option. depending on how you style the top, accessories/jewelry, and shoes (or add a little moto jacket), you could go from casual all the way to formal with this as the foundation piece.

wardrobe planning: chic athleisure essentials under $50

love it or hate it, the advent of athleisure in the last few years has one big upside: it's never been easier to look good in your gym clothes.

thankfully, stylish workout gear is also much more affordable than it used to be. you don't have to be stuck with the lululemon price point anymore, which is great news for all of us who want to look good in performance basics, but would rather save the splurges for more substantial wardrobe items.

there's been some discussion recently on whether athleisure is 'over'. i suppose it depends on how you define its purpose for your lifestyle. personally, i find it more perennially relevant as a versatile category of workout essentials. gym clothes that can also serve as travel essentials and casual basics for running errands = a good buy in my book.

these are my picks for the best athleisure basics, all (except one) under $50:

1. basic workout leggings // these inexpensive but well made alternatives to lululemons are the LBD of the workout lineup. also essential as travel leggings, and work-from-home pants (at least a couple steps up from your pjs!).
2. mesh panel yoga leggings // same as above, but injected with a higher dose of 'fashion'.
3. space-age track pants // the loose track pant is generally hard to find in a stylish version, but these have just enough of a space-age, Bowie vibe to go from gym to (almost) everywhere else.
4. ankle socks // my go-to sock silhouette any time i'm wearing sneakers.
5. minimalist chic sneakers* // all of the characteristics of the perfect chic sneaker: clean lines, minimal logo, ultra cushiony sole.
6. seamless sports bra // a stylish low-impact foundation piece that's simple and comfortable (for more mid to high impact workouts, i find that Under Armour makes the best ones.)
7. strappy yoga tank // i prefer a fitted tank for yoga so there's no excess fabric bunching up and getting in the way of different poses. love these colorways and subtle styling of the straps.
8. loose racerback tank // the universal tank for nearly everything else at the gym and beyond.
9. sleek layering jacket // i've found that the thumb holes in the l/s thermal workout jacket are particularly useful for chilly days. the sleek profile also makes this a warm but not bulky layer under a little black leather jacket or coat.
10. lightweight down vest // a perennial favorite in my basics rotation – the ultralight version by uniqlo is still the best inexpensive down option for travel, workout, and getting out and about with a trusty layer of warmth.

hi again, i can't believe we're halfway through October!

now that we're back to sweater and leather jacket weather, i'm feeling newly inspired again with all of the familiar signs of autumn.

my apologies to readers who checked back from time to time over the past few months. i didn't want to post just for the sake of posting without real inspiration, so it felt right to take a breather and give this space a bit of a break. (for those of you so inclined, the archives are always accessible in the bottom right bar.)

wardrobe intel:
there are some promising notes at one of my go-to shops. at the start and end of the summer i found a number of excellent and well made blazers and vintage-inspired dresses from j.crew. it really feels like some of the old 'crew is making a comeback. compared with the last few years, there's a noticeable difference in the improved fit and quality of materials. small but important details that had languished – linings, working cuff buttons, pop of colors under the lapel, quality fabric in general – have returned, at least in the pieces i purchased. i haven't seen any of the knits, and it's still a bit of a mixed bag, but the online reviews for the individual items are very helpful for honest fit and quality thoughts. as we head into coat weather, for the first time in a while i'm actually looking forward to the new f/w offerings from a chain retailer. great news for all of you who are looking to add a few timeless wardrobe pieces at a good price point (the sales are still fairly regular, and quite good!).

reading list:
it's been a while since i bought any personal style books, but i'm looking forward to pre-ordering a copy of the new garconne, spotted via lin's blog. at a quick glance, it looks like a longer-form hardcover book version of The Gentlewoman, a good sign. will report back!

wardrobe building 101: the best leather jacket under $500

the official start of spring – aka leather jacket weather – calls for a great leather jacket.

problem is, quality leather doesn't come cheap and the sky's the limit when it comes to luxe leather options (Rick Owens, i'm looking at you). problem solved: this perfect cropped version by Oak popped up on my radar and i had to share. i love the cropped sleeves and the slightly shrunken fit –ideal as a top layer over lighter spring tanks and dresses. (tip: try to avoid too-long or baggy sleeves on a leather jacket.) also, there's just enough hardware for the classic moto look without going overboard.

wardrobe planning: spring 2016

goodbye, mild but draggy winter. hello, sunny days ahead!

finally getting energized for spring after a rather long stretch of style hibernation. spring feels shorter and shorter every year, but i'm determined to get the most out of jacket weather regardless. what's on the roster? there isn't a terribly long list of wants vs needs, the main objective is to replace some worn-out staples and add a few elements of 'new' to the collection.

on the list:
clean skinny jeans – having just completed a much needed spring-cleaning of my denim stash, on the list is a pair of basic indigo jeans. Madewell has been acing the denim game the past few years, and this season their 8" skinnies are right on – great material, not too skinny (the cut is more of a cigarette leg vs a legging), true to size.
white linen blazer – this is one of those items that has been on a wp list for so many seasons now that it's become kind of a running joke. the search continues...
peony silk blouse – really feeling a blush pink for the season, and this option from everlane is just lovely.
zara camo jacket – versatile always, and to me this is the s/s version of a great neutral print.
adidas slides – i need to replace a pair of worn-out house slippers, and these are solid enough for quick errands around the block too.
newbark leather slide sandals – ...the chic leather versions of the above. i'm planning on doing many a brunch and farmer's market run in these.
birkenstock arizonas – a classic – everyone should have a pair of these. PS: check out the New Yorker's profile of the humble birk.

purchased:
stan smiths (more sizes at adidas online) – wearing these all the time. the fit and leather on these stans are way better for some reason than my previous pair of superstars, which fit rather wide.
mini pashli bag in red – you know how some styles are just ideal for your lifestyle? in my case it's the compact crossbody bag. this will be handy for summer and travel, and the red + silver hardware is fun and gorgeous.

inspiration:
Keri Russell /the lady's got style! i love how she never looks too 'done' and has stayed true to yet also evolved a consistent look since her Felicity days.
apartment therapy /i could spend days clicking around in the infinitely inspiring and resource-filled world of AT and the kitchn. so many great ideas for maximizing style with pragmatism for everyday living.

the find: relaxed garconne loafers

longtime readers of LAM know that i love a classic leather flat.

now that we're almost in ankle-jean-and-sockless-shoe weather, i'm eyeing adding a pair or two of what i've dubbed the 'relaxed garconne' loafers to my rotation (they'll be in good company with favorite Vince slip-ons - reviewed here). about a year or so ago, i stumbled upon a pair of Newbark loafers on major sale, and they turned out to be one of my best random sale buys of the year. incredibly comfortable and lightweight without being delicate, excellent travel flats.

they're not super widely known or carried in many stores, but the buttery leather and exotic textures make them easily recognizable. i like to think of them as a luxe leather version of my TOMs (also a warm-weather staple). the one major downside is their high retail price, but look for them on sale (right now there is a good selection on deep discount here). the pair that i snagged on sale were marked as 'handmade in LA', so that's likely part of the pricing equation. for me, they're a happy medium between the more structured Dieppas and the delicate, floppy Martinianos.

foundations: the oversized cardigan coat

budget find: this H&M super cozy oversized cardigan coat/wrap

this is the new hero piece of my winter wardrobe.

you know that time of year when all you want to wear is a giant blanket? it's that time of year. that groundhog spoke too soon, obviously, because it's back to snow boots and parkas all week. the genius of the oversized cardigan wrap/coat is that it has all of the practical qualities of a Snuggie without any of the undignified qualities of...a Snuggie. i generally avoid buying knits from high street shops due to the predominance of acrylic in the fabric content, but every once in a while you can find a lovely and inexpensive piece like this one with mostly natural fibers. since i blinked and missed the Lemaire x Uniqlo capsule from last fall, this is a welcome discovery that evokes some of the same luxe minimalist vibe.

(Everlane also makes a more tailored 100% chunky wool version, which you could definitely keep at the office as an all-purpose workwear knit.)

another added bonus of the oversized cardigan coat: depending on how you style it, it's practical and stylish for everyday. i'm a big fan of the casual, Row-esque look of the H&M version – perfect for cold-weather travel.

getting through the first few weeks of the new year is always kind of a drag, but that's what the January sales are for. for all you Dieppa fans out there, a ton of beautiful and colorful DR shoes in every style just landed at 50% off.

my picks are these pretty rose gold loafers, these classic gentlewoman's oxfords, and the perfect-with-jeans-or-a-dress beige calis. i also love these Alexander Wang brogues – his shoes always seem quite sturdy and well made.

wardrobe planning: winter 2016

January is always kind of a mixed bag.

the first week or two always feels like a bit of a letdown after all the holiday festivities of the prior month and a half. at the same time, we're bombarded with all the media hype of resolutions, new year projects, goals. meanwhile, this is also when the weather legitimately starts getting cold – by which i mean curling-up-by-the-fireplace-in-pajamas, hibernation cold. it's a funny state of affairs for wardrobe planning indeed.

even so, January is still my favorite 'serious' fashion season of the year – it's the best time to do cold-weather wardrobe planning with a few fancier (and usually on major sale) f/w wishlist items in mind. wardrobe planning this winter will focus on some 'unsung staples' and a few 'maybe' wishlist items that i'll be scoping on sale (more on that in the next post).

a few silk LBDs // excellent time to mine the COS sale for these trusty staples.
a chunky wool cardigan coat // love me a cozy long oversized cardigan. ideal for throwing on for quick errands, puttering around the house, etc.
black patent loafers // equal parts Emmanuelle Alt and MJ cool.
tomboy jeans // after retiring one of my old go-to skinnies recently, i'm in need of a replacement pair. these (on sale here and here) fit the bill perfectly.
oversized cashmere stole // i like to keep a few oversized cozy stole/shawls on rotation for winter as i reach for some kind of wrap-like scarf every day.

lounge / home / beauty
cute pajamas (also love these cozy pjs for wintry evenings) // for some reason i've gone for years without proper pajamas. no need to get spendy on these, but i appreciate a properly cute set. or three.
cozy house slippers // one of those unsung essentials.
essential makeup brush kit // one of my new years resolutions is to learn how to do some basic makeup. nothing like a quality brush kit to get started!
neutrals eyeshadow palette // everyone raves about these Urban Decay palettes. i love the idea of an all-in-one assortment of shades.
diptyque candles // every winter these are my guilty pleasure. once the candle is all gone, wash out the jar and you have a lovely vessel with which to repurpose.
diptyque parfum sampler // as someone who can't commit to any single fragrance, i love collecting smaller testers and minis. these are the perfect assortment of portables.

fall wp faves:
PS1 burgundy bag // purchased this past fall and it's a great buy. second time's the charm on this handy satchel.
uniqlo light vest // reached for this in some fashion every week. super practical and layers supremely well.
