The Best of Womenfest!

My partner and I have attended Womenfest Key West two years in a row, so I think we may in fact be experts now ;) We know where lesbians should go and what to do while you are there. First and foremost in Key West you need a moped or two. We like doubling up on one and taking turns riding bitch. The first year we rented one from the cheapest spot in town and we definitely got what we paid for, cheap and run down. This year we rented from Moped Hospital and the bike was clean, ran perfectly, was in great condition and very sexy. This is truly the best way to get around on the island…wind in the hair (or whizzing under your ball cap). You can experience warm humid air that purifies your parched skin, and joy in the occasion sprinkles under the beautiful blue skies. Parking is much easier and it's just so much more fun!

Once you check into your room, it’s high time for cocktails and a dip in the pool where you can decide what to do next. Keep in mind that there is no real concept of time in Key West. This makes it the perfect place to do what you want, when you want and not feel guilty about it. And with all the fabulous events the Business Guild puts on for Womenfest, you have plenty of options, all day every day, to be surrounded by lovely lesbians.

There are pool parties, beach babe/hot buns contests, gay trolley tours, fantastic museums and exhibits to explore, shopping, water sports adventures, cruises, party boats, dance parties, bull riding contests, comedy shows, and more. The beauty of it is, there is no wrong decision about what to do next. Everywhere you go you run into lesbians, and the island has a very accepting, welcoming feel about it demonstrated by the rainbow flags throughout Duval Street. When we are on vacation, the most important thing for me is that I feel safe to be me and safe to be with her. Being in an environment such that I can openly hold my girlfriend's hand walking down the street is so important and so appreciated. While we could not possibly hit every single event offered, here are some we did attend and highly recommend!

The Fury all women ultimate adventure tour is a must do! Go ahead and add it to your bucket list. It’s an all day boat trip where you stop for snorkeling, jet skiing, parasailing, a water playground with inflatable slides, rock climbing walls and a trampoline. As if this wasn’t enough, they also feed you lunch and provide an on the boat happy hour. All of which is included in the cost of the event. Oh and did I mention it’s top optional; so you’re sure to see some beautiful boobs ;)

I am not a big comedy show fan, so when I first saw Curiously Strong Comedy show with Julie Goldman, Jackie Monahan, Gloria Bigelow on the list I was not all that excited about it. After some coercing from some of our new friends we met at Womenfest, we decided to join them at the show... and I’m soooo glad we did. We had a absolute blast! This was lesbian comedy at it’s finest. We were truly LOL.

There are many other nightlife options each and every night of Womenfest. We chose to hit the Aqua Traffic Jam Dance Party and I danced my ass off with all kinds of different women for hours. The theme utilized glow sticks showing everyone's status red=taken, yellow=want to play, green=single. It was nice to know where everyone stood ;) The music was pumping and the crowd was bumping all night long. We also ended up running into a number of people we hung out with at the last Womenfest. It was kind of like a damn reunion!

I admit I am not a country music fan at all. However, we decided that we HAD to go to the Cowbill Bill's Pink Party with Pink Panty Sexy Bull Riding Contest because it benefited breast cancer research. I am a big fan of any event that supports this cause, and of course, who doesn’t like sexy bull riding contests? Before the contest, Jennifer Corday & the Cougars performed which was a definite crowd pleaser. Once the contest started all bets were off and um, so was a lot of clothing. Some took off tops, other pants! Suffice it to say, super hot and super fun event. Country fan or not, you need to add this to your list of must do’s while at Womenfest.

To sum up WomenFest, expect thrilling adventures, fun in the sun, lesbians galore, laid back tropical island, clothing optional excitement, slow paced tours and high energy nightlife, and much more. Plus, if you have any social graces at all- you will make friends for life on this trip! We did:)

Here are some other wonderful things to do while enjoying your time on charming Key West.

If you have a couple of hours to spare and desire a high speed adventure on the water, check out one of the island’s jet ski tours. We opted for one that circled the entire island in less than 2 hours. The tour literally takes off at a private beach adjacent to the Reach Resort. You start off in the choppy Atlantic Ocean hitting speeds of up to 40-50 mph. Getting air is a definite possibility so hold on tight! The tour makes a handful of stops around the island, most of which are quick explanations of where you are, where you came from and where you’re going next, then you’re off again racing around the island. The longest stop was in an area of beautiful aqua blue water where we played on the jet skis and took a swim. Bring a waterproof camera for sure. Some of the stops were simply gorgeous. Make sure to take some of you on your jet ski too! You can frame and remember the moment when you get home ;)

If you are over by the Reach Resort, wander over to the Strip House Bar (striphouse.com) even if it's for just one drink. Any card carrying lesbian will appreciate the bar's décor. It’s actually a steak house and bar with 1940esque cabaret style nude images adorning all the wall space. Not a lesbian bar, but worth a stop in our opinion.

Fort Zachary Taylor Beach is America's southernmost State Park. The gay and lesbian locals refer to it as Elizabeth Taylor Beach. It is a little off the beaten path, located near the end of Highway 1. It's worth the trip as it is the most beautiful public beach we found anywhere on the island. It’s a couple bucks to get in but go ahead and splurge on it ;) The Atlantic Ocean meets the Gulf here and causes a warm water commotion. Top this with the torrential rains and lightening we experienced during our visit and it was one of the greatest adventures we have ever been on.

Brewery Tours of San Diego

My girlfriend and I have a bucket list and one of the many things we each wanted to do before we die was to go on a beer tour. Yes, we love beer! A couple Christmases ago we stumbled across Arrogant Bastard (made by Stone Brewery) in a Bevmo store…awesome brew! So naturally as this brewery is pretty local, North San Diego, we decided the inclusion of this brewery was a must on whatever beer tour we chose. I looked through a couple different websites to see which tour sounded like the best fit for us and finally found the perfect one! Brewery Tours of San Diego (BTOSD), not to be confused with another tour with a very similar name that actually operates out of Carlsbad. BTOSD offers private and public tours which are quite affordable considering they pick you up at your house, or hotel in our case, drive you around to 3 different breweries with 4-6 tastings each, feed you lunch and then drop you off at the end of the day. Because it was just Anna and I the public tour seemed like a perfect fit and it truly really was!

We took the Sunday 10-4pm tour, which started out at Stone, then progressed to San Marcos Brewery, and finally ended at Lost Abbey.

TAKE US TO THE BREEEEEWERIES PLEASE!

Jon was our beer tour guide extraordinaire!

As promised Jon called us the day before to confirm pick up time and location, and even better...he was there right one time to pick us up for a day of over indulgence. The sign posted on the inside of the bus over the drivers head had me cracking up the minute I sat down in my seat. Great saying for a Lush like myself.

We picked up a few more people and then were on our way to our first stop, the most anticipated, Stone Brewery. This place is fantastic.

Definite highlight of the entire tour. The grounds are rugged and sexy. The outside patio was spectacular. Perfect for anything from a large event to a small afternoon of lunch and brews.

They also have this garden of indigenous plants on display which was such a pleasant surprise for us LA girls.

The deco was on point, even in the ladies bathroom. I mean seriously…I want to duplicate this in my house!

Both Anna and I thought all of the beers were excellent with the exception of one that had a meaty flavor…almost like a beer marinade. The only complaint I had is I would have liked to go on an actual tour here, and definitely would have loved to spend more time "tasting" at this brewery. But alas I guess that’s the point of a 3 brewery tour, to give you a small taste of a couple so you know where you will return. Stone Brewery is a definite repeat for us! We will come next time with a larger, private group.

Next, we went to San Marcos Brewery. I am not sure many of the people on our tour were big fans of this place. However, this is where we had lunch and by this time we were all quite hungry. Anna and I both had the turkey burgers. The beers were not particularly impressionable in my mind and neither was the food, however it was a very relaxing setup where the patrons on the tour actually got to chat a bit, discussing their favorite brews and beer stories.

The last stop now that we had a full tummy was the Lost Abbey, which was literally in a warehouse. When we drove up I think we were all taken back a bit as it wasn’t at all what we expected. Once you walked into the roll up metal doors in the docking area, there it was...cylinders and barrels full of beer and a bar with taps of all sorts of interesting flavors to enjoy. This was a nice local experience.

Our tour guide showed us around the brewery and explained the process as well as pointed out that Stone Brewery actually started in the exact warehouse the is now housing the Lost Abbey. Stone came a long way from a little rinky dink brewery in a warehouse to a very large well know brewery ranked #16 in the US (according to our guide Jon). He gave us a quick run down of the entire brewing process that takes place at the Lost Abbey and then we were free to have as many tastings as we could down in the remaining time. The beers were delicious and quite strong. At this point in the day no one was able to drive, so thankfully we didn't have to!

The Lost Abbey brewery cat also enjoyed the tasting!

Although it appeared we were the only "family" on this specific tour, it was clear the neither Jon nor anyone else on the tour seemed to mind that a lesbian couple was amongst the straights. It was a really fun and next time I would like to get a bunch of friends together and go the private tour route. We will definitely be back again!

Hot Top Gun actress Kelly McGillis, 53 and her sales exective girlfriend Melanie Leis, 42 were joined in a civil union this week. They have known each other since 2000. Judge Robert T. Zane III, municipal presiding judge officiated at the Collingswood Municipal Court in New Jersey's Camden County on Wednesday. The couple met when Leis was a bartender in the Key West, Florida, restaurant McGillis owned with her second husband. McGillis came out to People Mag in 2009 when a reporter had asked if she were looking for a man or a woman. "It was like a moment of truth," she said. "I thought, Hmm, do I say the truth, or do I just say, It's none of your business, which is my standard answer? I said you know, I'm just going to say the truth. Definitely a woman." Among McGillis's best-known film roles were opposite Harrison Ford in 1985's "Witness," and opposite now openly lesbian Jodie Foster, in 1988's "The Accused."

10 Things Lesbians Must Discuss with their Doctor

These are the health issues the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association have identified as of most common concern for lesbians. While not all of these items apply to everyone, it's wise to be aware of these issues.
1. Breast Cancer
Lesbians have the richest concentration of risk factors for breast cancer than any subset of women in the world. Combine this with the fact that many lesbians over 40 do not get routine mammograms, do breast self-exams, or have a clinical breast exam, and this cancer may elude early diagnosis, when it is most curable.
2. Depression/Anxiety
Lesbians have been shown to experience chronic stress from homophobic discrimination. This stress is compounded by the need that some still have to hide their orientation from family and colleagues at work, and by the fact that many lesbians have lost the important emotional support most others get from their families due to alienation stemming from their sexual orientation.
3. Heart Health
Smoking and obesity are the most prevalent risk factors for heart disease among lesbians; but all lesbians need to also get an annual clinical exam because this is when blood pressure is checked, cholesterol is measured, diabetes is diagnosed, and exercise is discussed. Preventing heart disease, which kills 45 percent of women, should be paramount to every clinical visit.
4. Gynecological Cancer
Lesbians have higher risks for many of the gynecologic cancers. What they may not know is that having a yearly exam by a gynecologist can significantly facilitate early diagnosis and a better chance of cure.
5. Fitness
Research confirms that lesbians have higher body mass than heterosexual women. Obesity is associated with higher rates of heart disease, cancers, and premature death. What lesbians need is competent and supportive advice about healthy living and healthy eating, as well as healthy exercise.
6. Tobacco
Research also indicates that lesbians may use tobacco and smoking products more often than heterosexual women. Whether smoking is used as a tension reducer or for social interactions, addiction frequently follows and is associated with higher rates of cancers, heart disease, and emphysema - the three major causes of death among all women.
7. Alcohol
Alcohol use and abuse may be higher among lesbians. While one drink daily may be good for the heart, more than that can be a risk factor for cancer or osteoporosis.
8. Substance Use
Research indicates that lesbians may use illicit drugs more often than heterosexual women. This may be due to added stressors in lesbian lives from discrimination. Lesbians need support from each other and from health care providers to find healthy releases, quality recreation, stress reduction, and coping techniques.
9. Domestic Violence
Domestic Violence is reported to occur in about 11 percent of lesbian homes, about half the rate of 20 percent reported by heterosexual women. But the question is where to do lesbians go when they are battered? Shelters need to welcome and include battered lesbians, and offer counseling to the offending partners.
10. Osteoporosis
The rates and risks of osteoporosis among lesbians have not been well characterized yet. Calcium and weight-bearing exercise as well as the avoidance of tobacco and alcohol are the mainstays of prevention. It is also important to get bone density tests every few years to see if medication is needed to prevent fracture.

Are Kids of Lesbian Parents Well-Adjusted?

Researchers Say Children of Lesbian Parents Have Fewer Behavior Problems
By Kathleen Doheny
Reviewed by Laura J. Martin, MD
Children raised by lesbian parents develop into psychologically healthy teens and have fewer behavior problems than their peers, according to the latest report on a long-running study that began in 1986.
''Contrary to assertions from people opposed to same-sex parenting, we found that the 17-year-olds scored higher in psychological adjustment in areas of competency and lower in problem behaviors than the normative age-matched sample of kids raised in traditional families with a mom and a dad," says researcher Nanette Gartrell, MD, the Williams distinguished scholar at the University of California Los Angeles School of Law.
Gartrell's report, published in Pediatrics, is the latest in a series from the U.S. National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study (NLLFS), which enrolled 154 prospective lesbian mothers between 1986 and 1992. Researchers followed them and their children as they conceived through donor insemination. Most (140) were either birth mothers or co-mothers, but 14 were single moms from the start.
The retention rate of the study is high, with 93% of the original participants, or 78 families, still enrolled, Gartrell says.
More than 270,000 U.S. children were living in households headed by same-sex couples in 2005, according to Gartrell, and nearly twice that number had a single gay or lesbian parent. For the latest report, Gartrell and her colleague, Henny Bos, PhD, of the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, looked at 78 teens from 77 families; one family did not complete all the survey data.
The teens, average age 17, completed questionnaires. The moms were interviewed and completed lengthy checklists about their children's activities, social life, school and academic performance, and overall competence.
The researchers compared the results of the participants with those from a comparison group of 93 teens, also average age of 17, from another research sample that included maternal reports on the same topics. The teens raised by lesbian parents were rated higher in social, school, academic, and total competence, Gartrell found, while they were rated lower than the peers in the comparison group in engaging in problem behaviors such as rule-breaking and aggression.
No differences were found among the teens raised by lesbian parents who were conceived by a known donor, as yet unknown donor, or permanently unknown donor, Gartrell found, or among those whose mothers were still together and those who had split up.
When interviewed for this report in May 2009, 56% of the mothers who were co-parents when the child was born were now split up. But most of those, 71.4%, shared custody.

Parent Profile
How to explain the good results? "These are not accidental children," Gartrell tells WebMD.
The babies, she notes, were all planned, all conceived through donor insemination. "The moms tended to be older and attended parenting classes. They were very involved in the process of education [for their children]."
''They anticipated their kids would experience stigmatization," she says, and many discussed how to handle it, both with family members and at discussions at their child's school. She describes the parents as ''very committed."
Were the mothers realistic in rating their kids? Gartrell thinks so. ''We saw a tremendous amount of candor,'' she says. The checklists include more than 100 items.
Gartrell can't say with certainly whether the findings would apply to gay fathers. It's ''highly likely," she says. But gay couples who have a child through a surrogate is much more recent phenomenon than lesbian couples opting for donor insemination, so the research will take time to catch up, she says.
The follow-up on the families she studies will continue, Gartrell says. Bos, her co-author, plans to replicate the study in the Netherlands. The study was funded by a variety of organizations, including the Lesbian Health Fund of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association and others, but the funders had no roles in the study, Gartrell says.
''What's really impressive is the long-term follow-up," says Ellen Perrin, MD, a professor of pediatrics at the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center, Boston. She reviewed the paper before publication for the authors but was not involved in it otherwise.
While much research has been published on younger children in lesbian families, there's ''almost no understanding of what happens as they become adults," says Perrin.
The good news from the latest report, she tells WebMD, is that these children are doing very well socially, psychologically, and academically. Adding credibility, Perrin says, is the high retention rate -- 93% of the original participants are still being followed. "Very few people have been able to do that," she says. "That makes the data very valuable."
Will the results change the minds of those opposed to same-sex parenting? "I hope it does," Perrin says. "People need to look at the information."
WebMD requested comments on the new research from two organizations that favor traditional family structures -- Focus on the Family and the Family Research Council. Spokespeople for both groups said they will try to review the findings and provide comment, but those comments were not received in time for publishing.

Sunday, April 30, 2000
By SHARON UNDERWOOD
For the Valley News (White River Junction, VT)
Many letters have been sent to the Valley News concerning the homosexual menace in Vermont. I am the mother of a gay son and I've taken enough from you good people.
I'm tired of your foolish rhetoric about the "homosexual agenda" and your allegations that accepting homosexuality is the same thing as advocating sex with children. You are cruel and ignorant. You have been robbing me of the joys of motherhood ever since my children were tiny.
My firstborn son started suffering at the hands of the moral little thugs from your moral, upright families from the time he was in the first grade. He was physically and verbally abused from first grade straight through high school because he was perceived to be gay.
He never professed to be gay or had any association with anything gay, but he had the misfortune not to walk or have gestures like the other boys. He was called "fag" incessantly, starting when he was 6.
In high school, while your children were doing what kids that age should be doing, mine labored over a suicide note, drafting and redrafting it to be sure his family knew how much he loved them. My sobbing 17-year-old tore the heart out of me as he choked out that he just couldn't bear to continue living any longer, that he didn't want to be gay and that he couldn't face a life without dignity.
You have the audacity to talk about protecting families and children from the homosexual menace, while you yourselves tear apart families and drive children to despair. I don't know why my son is gay, but I do know that God didn't put him, and millions like him, on this Earth to give you someone to abuse. God gave you brains so that you could think, and it's about time you started doing that.
At the core of all your misguided beliefs is the belief that this could never happen to you, that there is some kind of subculture out there that people have chosen to join. The fact is that if it can happen to my family, it can happen to yours, and you won't get to choose. Whether it is genetic or whether something occurs during a critical time of fetal development, I don't know. I can only tell you with an absolute certainty that it is inborn.
If you want to tout your own morality, you'd best come up with something more substantive than your heterosexuality. You did nothing to earn it; it was given to you. If you disagree, I would be interested in hearing your story, because my own heterosexuality was a blessing I received with no effort whatsoever on my part. It is so woven into the very soul of me that nothing could ever change it. For those of you who reduce sexual orientation to a simple choice, a character issue, a bad habit or something that can be changed by a 10-step program, I'm puzzled. Are you saying that your own sexual orientation is nothing more than something you have chosen, that you could change it at will? If that's not the case, then why would you suggest that someone else can?
A popular theme in your letters is that Vermont has been infiltrated by outsiders. Both sides of my family have lived in Vermont for generations. I am heart and soul a Vermonter, so I'll thank you to stop saying that you are speaking for "true Vermonters."
You invoke the memory of the brave people who have fought on the battlefield for this great country, saying that they didn't give their lives so that the "homosexual agenda" could tear down the principles they died defending. My 83-year-old father fought in some of the most horrific battles of World War II, was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart.
He shakes his head in sadness at the life his grandson has had to live. He says he fought alongside homosexuals in those battles, that they did their part and bothered no one. One of his best friends in the service was gay, and he never knew it until the end, and when he did find out, it mattered not at all. That wasn't the measure of the man.
You religious folk just can't bear the thought that as my son emerges from the hell that was his childhood he might like to find a lifelong companion and have a measure of happiness. It offends your sensibilities that he should request the right to visit that companion in the hospital, to make medical decisions for him or to benefit from tax laws governing inheritance.
How dare he? you say. These outrageous requests would threaten the very existence of your family, would undermine the sanctity of marriage.
You use religion to abdicate your responsibility to be thinking human beings. There are vast numbers of religious people who find your attitudes repugnant. God is not for the privileged majority, and God knows my son has committed no sin.
The deep-thinking author of a letter to the April 12 Valley News who lectures about homosexual sin and tells us about "those of us who have been blessed with the benefits of a religious upbringing" asks: "What ever happened to the idea of striving . . . to be better human beings than we are?"
Indeed, sir, what ever happened to that?
Sharon Underwood's son is doing fine now, the first in his family to graduate from college.
If you have friends who think Jesus would have been a Republican -- on the side of billionaire Pat Robertson, et al, in opposing Hate Crimes Legislation, opposing the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, and, yes, opposing Vermont's extension of economic benefits to same-sex couples -- please feel free to forward this column to as many of them as you like. Can't you just see it? Jesus arm-in-arm with the NRA trying to maintain the gun-show loophole? Stumping the Holy Land in favor of a massive tax cut for the rich, while opposing a hike in the minimum wage? Somehow, I think not.
Tomorrow: Back to Business. (Probably.)

Well ladies, Club Skirts The Dinah’s lesbian debauchery fest has come and gone again, but let me tell you Mariah did it right for the big 20! My first Dinah experience was spent with Club Skirts at the Doral years ago, and sometimes when venues change I’m sadly disappointed, but not this year! The pool parties at the Hilton were great, loved the set up!

And what lesbian doesn’t love a little lube wrestling and um…jiggley, bouncy, naked boobies? Oops I mean fully clothed wet t-shirt contests??? *wink*

Aaaaah….Love the pool parties!

I have to say too that every year it seems like the White Party gets better and better. I mean Katie Perry last year was killer, but Ke$ha?? TiK ToK is on commercials, tv shows, movie trailers, and now all over The Dinah! Sweet! The performances were great, but I do think the highlight of the entire weekend for me was definitely the red carpet event. No I’m not a star struck lesbian that goes ga-ga over seeing people walk the red carpet, but I was highly entertained by drama and excitement I witnessed at the event.

Anna and I were minding our own business in the pressline set to take pictures of Billie Myers, the Paradiso Girls, Meredith Baxter (btw how cool is she?? Family Ties mom comes out of the closet as a freaking lesbian! YES, Go Meredith!), and all the other headliners and celesbians, when we were viscously attacked and lesbo-handled by Sarah Shahi fans trying to get to their precious Carmen!

Well maybe not quite viscously attacked, but there was mass chaos with lesbians trying to cross the press line, shoving, pushing, and outstretched hands with camera phones everywhere! Is Sarah even a lesbian or is she just that unbelievably beautiful? Well once she walked by our spot in the press line I have to tell you, she’s IS that beautiful. She is one of the few people that are actually prettier in person. So gorgeous I almost didn’t notice how awful her outfit was! I said almost ladies. ;)

Club Skirts rocked The Dinah what more can I say. From performances from KeSha, God-Des and She, the Paradiso Girls, Martha Davis & The Motels, Lolene, freaking Salt-n-Pepa (can you say FLASH BACK), to comedy shows, celesbians galore, photos shoots for the NOH8 Campaign, wet t-shirt contests, pool parties, lube wrestling, go-gos, drinking, debauchery and so much more, I needed a month off just to recover! Let’s do it again next year! I’m ready to book for 2011 are you? ;)

15 Ways We Waste Our Money

Is your purse or wallet leaking? Whether it's careless spending or tiny indulgences that add up over time, these little drips can add up to big bucks. Plug them up and watch your savings grow.
Here are 15 common ways we girls waste money. If any sound familiar, look for ways to stop the bleeding.
1. New Nina: Cars, books, toys, exercise equipment and furniture can be purchased used for a fraction of the cost new ones, often in perfect condition.
2. Credit Carrie: If you have a $1,000 balance on a card charging 18%, you blow $180 every year on interest. Get in the habit of paying off your balance in full each month.
3. Ida Impulse: When you impulse buy you rarely get the best price. Resist the urge, go home and sleep on the decision. If you still want to buy the item the next day check your budget and go for it. Sometimes, you'll decide you don't need the item after all.
4. Surcharge Sally. A buck or two here and there may not seem like a big deal. But surcharges can really add up.
5. Dine Out Dinah: A habit of spending $10-$20 per person for lunch or dinner can be a huge drain on your wallet. Learn to cook, pack your lunch and brew your coffee at home- you could save a hundreds of dollars each year.
6. Lazy Linda: If you keep your savings in your checking account, you are wasting money. Move a lump sum into a savings account that pays you interest and you’ll get paid to save.
7. Brand Babe: From groceries to clothing to prescription drugs, you could save money by choosing the off-brand or generic over the label. And in many cases, you won't sacrifice quality. Clever advertising and fancy packaging don't make brand-name products better than store brands.
8. Wasteful Wilma: 40% of your energy bill is consumed when the appliances are turned off. Pull the plug on appliances with a clock or that operate by remote whenever possible.
9. Fiona Fee: Overdraw your checking account and you'll pay a $20 fee or more each time. Keep a close eye on your balance.
10. Needless Nelly: This sounds like a no-brainer to avoid, but how many times have you seen something on sale and thought you couldn't pass it up? Even if something is 50% off, you're spending too much if you don't need it. Coupons can be a great way to save on your grocery bills, but if you buy things you won’t use just because you have a coupon, you're wasting money.
11. Ida Ignore: Don't discount the discount store. Go there first, before Target or the grocery store. You can real deals on cleaning supplies, small kitchen tools, soap and toiletries, holiday decorations, greeting cards and gift wrap.
12. Unhealthy Ursula: Smoking not only damages your health, it burns up your cash. That daily $6 pack costs you $2,190 a year. Daily runs to the convenience store can be pricey as items are 50% more than at a regular grocery store.
13. Unassuming Sue: When was the last time you shopped around to determine whether you're getting the best deal on your car insurance or other service? Rates vary each year and with each insurance company.
14. Bankroll Betty: If you get a tax refund each April, you loan the government too much money via the taxes taken from your paycheck all year long. Put that money in your pocket by adjusting your tax withholding. Make sure to save year-round so you can pay your tax bill, but make money on the interest in the meanwhile.
15. Pointless Pia: How many cable channels do you really watch? Do you really need all those extra features for your cell phone? Are you getting your money's worth out of that gym membership? Take a look at what you pay for and what you actually use and cut what you don’t.

Career and Money Lush

It’s been rough out there, ladies! Many of us have recently lost our jobs or taken pay cuts. Some of us want to change careers and it seems impossible. How do we improve the situation? Does a cut in your hours mean cutting out daily vanilla lattes? How can we find a new job or make ends meet in such a difficult economic year?
Lesbian Life, Love & Career Coach Barb Elgin shares her tips for weeding through this trying financial time:
Do You Believe? Remember you are not alone; over 10% of Americans are unemployed. Trust that you have value and others will, too.
Keep It Current: Hone your current skills to make you more valuable to employers. Take a course or acquire an advanced certificate. Read books and trade magazines monthly. Basically, become an expert at whatever you do!
Network: If you are out of work or need a better job, attend any functions available to meet people in business settings. Chamber mixers, fundraisers and private events are opportunities to meet new people and expand your scope. People want to hire people they know!
You, The Expert: With a surplus of people in every field looking for work, now may not be the best time to change careers. Consider sticking with what you are good at for now to get your resume noticed. When things improve you can make a move into something new.
Manage Your Moods: Feel defeated or depressed? Try herbal remedies and vitamins for a boost. Exercise, sleep and healthy eating are mood enhancers. Feeling really blue? It’s OK to ask for help so visit your doctor for more options.
Lose The Attitude: Don’t let yourself fall into the negative spiral that frustration can bring. Surround yourself with positive people who won’t let you have a pity party for yourself. Too much negativity can make you appear less valuable to an employer and is bad for your well-being.
It’s All About Money, Honey: Now is the time to take a hard look at your financial status and re-think frivolous spending. Make a spreadsheet of your expenses for a month. You may be surprised at what you find! Forego a magazine subscription or Starbucks habit for awhile. You may actually feel better in the long run when you have more money in your bank account.
No CNN: Don’t watch any news program for more than an hour a day. Constant stories about the bad economy can reinforce a negative outlook. To remain cheery, keep yourself informed on current events, but don’t dwell on them.
What’s The Plan? Seek help to set financial & employment goals from a fiscally responsible parent or friend, or even a life coach. Figure out where you’d like to be in six months or a year, and create an action plan to achieve these goals.
Believe in yourself, ladies! You can control only so much in this life and the economy is not one of them. However, you can make a plan and learn to broaden your horizons by making yourself accountable and more valuable. If you believe there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that things will get better, they usually do.

Lesbian Web Series Raises Funds For Haiti

Cast of 'We Have To Stop Now' Donates Show Proceeds To Haiti Relief Efforts
Los Angeles (19 January 2010) – The lesbian web series 'We Have To Stop Now,' starring out, lesbian actresses Cathy DeBuono & Jill Bennett,
announced today that it will donate a portion of all proceeds from the show's subscription sales to the relief efforts currently underway in Haiti.
"We wanted to be able to contribute something to the efforts being made in Haiti right now. We decided that, for any subscriptions we can gather
for season two between now and January 31, we will send a percentage of the proceeds to Haiti," said DeBuono. "We're hoping that this helps to raise
some relief support sooner rather than later."
'We Have To Stop Now,' is a romantic comedy that follows two lesbian therapists as they struggle to keep up the pretense of their own
relationship after the success of their book “How To Succeed In Marriage Without Even Trying.” Written by Award-Winning, Internationally Produced Playwright & Actress, Ann Noble, this off-beat love story features the ultra-sleek, intellectual Dyna (DeBuono) and the quirky, emotional Kit (Bennett) along with their therapist, Susan, played by the charming & hilarious Suzanne Westenhoefer.
Season 1 of 'We Have To Stop Now' will be available on DVD this summer through Wolfe Releasing. Season 2 boasts the return of Suzanne
Westenhoefer, & welcomes guest star & recently out actress Meredith Baxter along with a long list of other out, lesbian celebrity participants. A full video re-cap of Season 1 will also be available to Season 2 Subscribers to help fans catch up with the show so far.
About “We Have To Stop Now”
We Have To Stop Now” is a romantic comedy featuring lesbian icons Cathy DeBuono, Jill Bennett & Suzanne Westenhoefer. It is also a prime example
of how lesbians are making their own media now that the “L Word” is off the air. The absence of lesbian characters and story lines in mainstream
productions has created an opportunity for talented women to create their own media – bringing fresh, new lesbian-focused content directly to consumers, and finding success online on their own.
Guest Stars Season 1: Maia Madison, Mara Marini, John W. McLaughlin, Catherine O’Connor, Marcus Procto, Darin Singleton & Rob Thelusma.
Guest Stars Season 2: Meredith Baxter, Erin Foley, Nicol Paone, Kate McKinnon, Gloria Bigelow, the Cherrybombcast, Doria Biddle, Dani Campbell, Sandra Valls.

Club Skirts The Dinah 2010

The publishers of Lesbian Lush recently got the opportunity to chat with Mariah Hanson about the upcoming 20th Anniversary of the Dinah Shore Weekend in Palm Springs. Here's what we asked and what the lesbian mogul had to say.

What makes this Dinah Shore, being the 20th anniversary, different from prior years?
20 years is considered a milestone so I think my customers are excited to help me celebrate. Apart from that, I have put together an amazing line up and series of events and activities that should help us produce another stellar Club Skirts "The Dinah."

Is the Dinah Shore Celebration still relevant after all these years? How so?
I'd have to defer that question to my customers but since they are coming in larger numbers than ever, I suspect they'd say yes. I certainly continue to enjoy producing it. I think we are offering the lesbian community a style of event not available anywhere else in the world. The level of entertainment is unparalleled even in the straight world, and the platform we offer for celesbian talent, burgeoning media outlets, such as your own, venders, sponsors, and a heck of a lot of single girls, and married women who enjoy five days in a celebratory environment, hopefully help us maintain our relevance.

Speaking of single vs. married...The Dinah single? The Dinah coupled? What's the best way to experience The Dinah?
Either. Depends on what you are looking for .... I do guarantee this .. at The Dinah, presented by Club Skirts ... you'll find it!

What is the craziest thing that has ever happened to you at the Dinah?
Oh dear, there are so many. It's such a wild, weekend, and the girls do go nuts in such fun ways. But for me personally, I think the year we tried to turn the music off at the pool party at The Riviera and the hotel begged us to turn it back on cause they thought there was going to be a riot... girls were starting to pick up lawn chairs to toss them into the pool. Or the time it snowed .... Or the time a tornado hit the Riviera and lifted heat lamps several feel in the air.... god, I could go on and on!

Why do you suppose lesbians have the stereotype of being cheap? And have you found any truth in this stereotype considering you run an event like the Dinah that is not considered cheap?
I don't think lesbians are cheap. I think they want value and service for that which they are paying. I actually think they are very savvy customers. They tip well. The hotels love them. The premium rooms sell out first at my hotels. It's a myth.
Looking back at the last 20 years, have you ever just once considered taking a year or more off?
No, I can't wait to start planning it again. I get depressed when it's over ..... I feel very passionate about this weekend and I get what it means to the community.

If you had the power to change one thing in regards to lesbian rights, what would it be and why?
Well, I think LGBT rights are all interconnected. For me, it's the marriage bill. I think we need to continue our passionate fight for marriage as it's paramount to our civil rights. But for lesbian issues, we need to pay more attention to breast cancer. We're four times more at risk and so even for lesbian who do not have access to health care through mainstream channels, I hope we continue to establish places like The Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center who do such a great job of picking up the slack in that area.
And I think every lesbian should adamantly exercise her right to celebrate her life .. preferably at The Dinah... :)=

New Study Uncovers Wide Range of Experiences in Lesbian Womens Healthcare

The Scandinavian Journal of Primary Health Care has published a new study which examines the importance of healthcare professionals awareness, attitudes and medical knowledge when treating lesbian patients.
Lesbian Women's Experiences with Health Care: A Qualitative Study was based on the detailed histories of 128 lesbian women living in Norway. The study found that although the social situation for gay, lesbian and bisexual people has improved over recent decades, lesbian women still face unique challenges when seeking healthcare services. Lesbian women as a group may suffer from certain health complaints in a different way than do exclusively heterosexual women or the general female population, probably due to the effects of marginalisation, explains Mari Bjorkman, MD, general practitioner. Examples are mental problems such as anxiety disorders and depression.
This study demonstrated the negative and positive consequences of healthcare professionals awareness of the existence of lesbian women among their patients, the impact of healthcare professional attitudes towards homosexuality, and how lack of possession of adequate medical knowledge affects the treatment lesbian patients receive, continues Bjorkman.
The study provided details both good and bad of lesbian womens experiences with their doctors. While some praised their GPs for open attitudes and understanding, others reported that their doctors seemed to think that being lesbian equals being depressed, or that the lesbian orientation was the cause of all illnesses and complaints.
Other lesbian patients provided worrying examples of lack of medical knowledge: one doctor wrongly informed the lesbian patient that screening for cervical cancer was not necessary for lesbians, and another doctor seemed unaware that STDs could be passed between lesbian partners. Yet another group of participants had been told that the lesbian orientation was merely a phase when young and that they would eventually become heterosexual.
Nevertheless, other histories demonstrated excellent knowledge of the specific health concerns of lesbian women among their healthcare professionals.
“The study concluded that doctors should be informed about the implications of heteronormativity and be attentive to the significance and vulnerability of disclosure, explains co-author Kirsti Malterud, MD PhD.
“It is good practice to use gender-neutral language and meet new patients with an open mind towards the question of sexual orientation. Medical knowledge about lesbian women should include gynaecological and sexual health issues, but – above all – the effects of marginalisation on health, well-being and identity, Bjorkman adds.
“Norway is historically more liberal than many other countries and it is likely that lesbian womens experiences in other western countries around the world would be on a par – or even slightly more negative – than those of the women questioned in our study, concludes Bjorkman.
