This is a fairly simple jobbie: I come in with the little piece of paper you sent me in the post, I give you my little bits of paper with numbers and in return, you give me a brand new piece of paper. The whole thing should take no more than a few seconds from start to finish.

Since you insist on closing at 3 in the afternoon, myself and the rest of the piece of paper recipients need to make special arrangements to come and see you. So, after I come to visit you, the less than nice lady at the door tells me to stand in the enquiry queue, which I do. Just so you know - you need some new aircon. It's a tad over 30 degrees outside and I almost threw up in my mouth a little from the smell at your place.

Anyway, after 10 minutes of standing in the enquiries queue, the helpful staff there tell me that I should have gone to a teller. Why did I come to enquiries? Surely I should know that I need to go to the teller? And then I start to slump towards a line that zigs and zags for close to an eternity - I see a sign.

The sign in question is a poster, placed in a weird corner where you can't really see i unless your a little lost (like I was). The sign says - "Renew your Vehicle Licence Online." Gasp! What's this - I can avoid the smelly buildings and the acid friendly staff? Well why didn't you say something?

So, Traffy old buddy old pal, here's a tip for you - next time you send me a notification to renew something, let me know if I can do it online. That way I won't have to come over to your place. The lines in your front room won't be as long and the air won't smell as bad. The staff won't be as friendly a they are now. And you might even be able to justify closing at half past 3. That's the thing about technology though - it's meaningless if you don't spread the word. If the people you're trying to assist don't know about the help you're trying to offer, it's all a little pointless.

Anyway, I'm sure that there will be some reason for me to come over to your place again before too long, so see you then.

P.S.I secretly dream that one day there will be a traffic department who fantasizes about working for the public, instead of trying to bend us to their illogical will. But I know that's crazy talk.

Make no mistake, email is still alive, well and very important as a communication, branding and sales tool. So with this in mind I jotted down a couple of thoughts about email.

These are all based on previous experience and not in any order

From Address
Make sure that this is something that the recipient can identify. Having your company name in the from address will make it easier for your recipients to know that it's you.

Subject Line
Subject lines are tricky. Too salesy, and you'll get stuck in the spam box. Too plain, and you won't get any one to open it. You'll need to test a couple of different stories so that you can decide which one you want to use.

Here's one way to do it:
Come up with a couple of different subject lines. Send these to a small percentage of your list and check the response. So, for example, if you have 1000 memberes on your mailing list, send subject line A to about 100 members and Subject Line B to about 100 members. Give this a day or so and then see which subject line worked best. Now you can use the winning subject line and send this out to the balance of your subscribers.

Header Image
Pictures a great way to communicate in a very quick easy way. The trick is not to get too carried away. Here are a couple of tips to consider when designing your header image.

Wider is badder.
Try not to make your images too wide or your readers will need to scroll in order to see all the information. It might also cause their email clients to wig out.

See the lighter side of life
Try and keep your header images as small as possible (in terms of k size). Heavier images take longer to load and this will probably irritate your readers (especially in a country like SA where bandwidth is still an issue).

Call to action
You'll need to choose what it is that you want your email to say. What's the one thing that you want your email to say? Try not to cram too much info in to the header image.

Body Copy
This is the really important part of your email, the meat of the matter if you will. There's always a temptation to add too much to a newsletter. If you add too much content, it just becomes boring. I've always considered a newsletter as a entry point. It's there to direct traffic to your website or your blog or your sales offer. Whatever the case, try not to cram too much in to the body of your newsletter or quite frankly you'll bore your readers. Instead, have a summary or shortened version of your article with a link where readers can go to read more.

As with your header image, try and stick to your Call to Action and not add too many different incentives to click. Too many CTA's and your mail becomes confusing.

A tip that I've found to work is to have clearly outlined sections. Use different sizes or colours or even header graphics to split out your content in a way that makes it easy for your readers to pick out what it is they want to read.

Signature
The signature is a very underrated part of an email. In addition to containing your details, don't forget to add your website link. It's also a great place to add a P.S. I've found that a little something in the PS field always tests well and gets pretty good click through rates.

Footer
This is the section of your mail where you need to include your unsubscribe information so that if you do piss anyone off, they can leave your club. With anyone and everyone having a social media profile of some sort, this is a great place to add links to your social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, MySpace or any other network.

Wake Up Early

I'm a big fan of working late at night. I'm nocturnal by nature so this usually suits me fine. The problem here is that no one else is awake at the time, so all of answers/input/feedback that I need to get from other people needs to wait until morning. Recently, this has started bugging me so now I've resolved to get to bed a bit earlier and rather be up before the birds. So far, it's working. Having said that, the coffee does have to be that little bit stronger though...

2. Work smaller

Over the last few months I've been working on really big chunks of stuff. But big chunks have delivery dates far down the line. Working on smaller tasks within bigger tasks has given me a greater sense of achievement and (most importantly) motivation. And before I knew it, the bigger ones started to resolve themselves.

3. Keep a timetable

Recently I dusted off an old varsity time table and tweaked it to fit in to my current schedule. Now I work in 50 minute increments with a 10 minute break between. At first it was hard to switch from one task to the next, but now routine has set in and it's getting easier. I'm also finding that when I stop working on one task and get back to it a few hours later, I have some fresh perspective and usually some new ideas.

4. Schedule the driving.

For a while, I was driving every day. Not a lot, but consistently. With the state of the roads here in Cape Town, no trip was ever a short one, so a 30 minute meeting would turn in to a 90 minute trip. I'm trying to schedule all of my driving so that a lot of it happens on the same day. At least that way I can get some flow going on non driving days.

5. Use Bookmarks

I love reading, and more specifically, I love reading tutorials and articles about cool ways to do things. The problem is that one article usually leads to another and another and another. Instead of reading these during the day, I now use Delicious to keep track of all the cool stuff I find and then set aside some time to read them later.

While there are probably 500 other things I can do to get more done, these little ones have helped so far.

Mostly, this was in order to try and figure out what it is that I actually listen to. But I also wanted to see if I could actually spot the difference in all of these genres.

Sadly, I must report that I got caught up in the splinter genres before too long and was classifying things as chill/rnb/soul/ (Lewsi Taylor - Bittersweet - Awesome Track).

More and more it feels like it's all mashing its way to just becoming Music. Genre divides will become smaller and smaller until eventually they disappear. These days, I use artists or bands as Genre Markers. It's the same principle that Pandora and LastFM work on. If I like a band, I'll probably enjoy music from other bands who sound like them, or like the song I like.

I've found that this way of finding music is a lot more accurate than trying to buy within a genre.

Mine's Heineken, It's delicious when it's cold, comes in a green bottle and ha my name in the title. What's not to love? Anyway, after making us all laugh with their first walk in fridge ad, Heineken have now released a sequel, and it's pretty funny.

http://lesterhein.blogspot.com/2009/11/heineken-walk-in-fridge-part-2.html

Now although the walk in fridge ad was funny, I'm almost tempted to say that the spoof that Bavaria made was funnier. The internet, radio and even TV is buzzing with talk about the botched SA anthem.

There's a phrase saying that there's no such thing as bad publicity, but the Ras Dumisani incident may just test this chestnut to the max, with a whole lot of less than nice things being said about the singer.

Here's an audio clip of Ras on radio giving a "better" version of the national anthem than the one he delivered at the stadium on the night of the rugby match.

Ras Dumisani singing the South African Anthem by lesterhein

Highly bedondered. Pissed off and Bevok. And it's all thanks to the way that the national anthem was performed at the SA vs France rugby match on Friday night. I didn't catch the game, but I had heard of the ermm...rendition from a few buddies and decided to check it out.

Here it is:

(if you're reading this on Facebook, go here to watch the video)

My first response was "those bloody frenchmen." But it turns out, I was wrong. In an article published by the UK's Telegraph newspaper, the identity of the singer was revealed. Ras Dumisani is a dude from Durban. Our side.

Here's an extract from the Telegraph article:

"I must convey that we are annoyed by the fact that the French disrespected our anthem," blasted South Africa coach Peter de Villiers.

"They didn't get someone who really knows the thing and show any respect for it. We expect people to show respect to the anthem of any other country."

But Dumisani was aghast that de Villiers and other Bok players were unhappy with his rendition.

"Everyone at the stadium told me I sang well, even after the match. The Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika has been my tune since a baby," he said. "How can I not know the words?

Personally, I'm a little upset myself. I like our anthem. It has four languages and a catchy tune. It confused little children and Americans. And for someone to come along and botch it on an international stage is not acceptable. I think that maybe the organisers should have checked with Ras if he knew all the words before they booked him for the gig....

What do you think?

UPDATE - Ras Dumisani was given a chance to tell his side on the story on radio. Click here to listen to the clip from the Redi Direko show on 567 Cape Talk

http://lesterhein.blogspot.com/2009/11/danger-ras.html

And truth be told, I still don't know which side of the line I'm on. On the one hand, an iPhone would help the Mac situation (Symbian to Mac relations are not going so well). On the other hand, the BlackBerry is just kinda, well, cool (in a pimped out Exel spreadsheet kinda way).

Any way, Blackberry is laying down the gauntlet for Apple, and I must admit, I like it.

Here's Blackberry's retort. That's my first reaction. Anyone who designs a car that burns 5l of fuel per minute should be called irresponsible. When that same engine produces 1000hp, you call them sir. When it costs a million pounds, you probably don't call them. If you know a little about cars, specifically the close knit relationship between fuel and air, you know that a car needs to swallow a whole lot of air to burn fuel. An 8l V8 engine swallows 24ooo litres of air to make 500hp. That's a big engine. Now image an engine big enough to make double that. Holy hell in a handbag.

The smart people at Bugatti managed to keep the engine size down by mashing two v8 engines together to create a W8. (the two Vs make a W). They tickled it with a turbo charger. They bolted on the mother of all transmissions. It has always on all wheel drive. It's a serious chunk of metal.

* A W-16 engine that can produce 1,001 horsepower
* A top speed of 250+ mph (400+ kph)
* A zero-to-60mph time of three seconds
* A zero-to-180mph time of 14 seconds
* A price tag somewhere in the $1.2 million range.

Once all the mechanical details were taken care of, the designers dressed it for the ball, and what a pretty girl she is!

If you wanted to take her out on a date, maybe just one date, you can rent one for £15,000 a day. It always has. There's so much of it lying all over the place - in spreadsheets, emails, smses and on random bits of paper. I know a lot of very smart people who are very good at organizing, storing and using data. But I reckon the coolest ones are the ones running the video store around the corner from my mom's place.

You see, I have a thing about video store cards. And the thing is that I keep losing them. I refuse to keep unnecessary cards in my wallet and as diligent as I am, I can never remember where I last put the video store card. Which is why my mom's video store (for lack of a better name) is so cool.

They've implemented a biometric finger print scanner to replace video store cards. So whenever you rent a video, you go and give them the finger and up pops your account letting you know what the last porno was that you rented and just how many fines you have outstanding. It's all very Star Trek, which makes it even more fitting to be found at a video store but is a very smart and efficient way to profile their customers and associate you with your data.

It also makes sense. Biometrics scanners these days start from just a few hundred rand, which means that the store will save on designing and printing cards for new members and replacing the inevitable lost cards for existing customers. It also saves time since the staff don't need to waste time looking up accounts or searching for id numbers.

Some folks do however some safety concerns about the 'new' technology worrying that there personal information is at risk or that they are that much closer to being a victim of identity theft. Personally, I think having your mail stolen is a much higher risk.

The scanners that businesses such the humble video shop make use of might look very CSI, but they're a lot more low tech. Firstly, they're not connected to the internet (in most instances) and secondly they record on average 5-7 regions on your finger print. If memory serves, the police require a 16 point match (though I could be wrong here).

More and more businesses are using biometrics fro access control and in the US, schools have started to issue kids lunch using their fingerprints to prevent lost lunch money or lunch cards. The trend is clearly showing that this is a technology that is gaining traction.

The question I have is simple - are you freaked out by fingerprint scanners or do you accept that its' something we'll all have to deal with in the future?

Weird things like fonts and cable connections make me smile. I spend hours reading about mic placement and CSS float rules. And I don't like socks. all of these together make me a geek, I guess. Which is why I'm annoyed today.

I'm trying to find the answer to a sound geek question, and I can't get to an answer. The question in question is whether or not using an XLR to 1/4 Jack will deliver a lower quality signal hen compared to an XLR to XLR mic cable.

The reason this particular question has captured my attention span is because I'm thinking of getting a new mixing desk for the StereoType Records live performances. The desk has 8 x 1/4 line ins with mic preamps. I'd like to mic our drum set using the line jacks and save the XLR inputs for the lead and backing vocals, but I' worried that this might not be as good as sending the drum signal straight to XLR.

If XLR is better, it means finding a different and more expensive desk which can take all the mic ins that we need. Bleh.

If you know the answer let me know.

The default one is a little confusing if you're a new user and our brand is badly represented.

So far, I've managed to customize the registration page as well as the registration email that is sent to new users, but all of that is almost pointless if the user lands on a boring, unbranded Dashboard.

I'm sure that all it's going to take is a bit of time until I can figure out how to do this, but in the mean time, have you tried this before? Did it work for you?

Please let me know how you managed to style and brand your Wordpress dashboard for different user roles.

And yes, I do realize the irony of blogging about Wordpress customization on a bloger blog.

I hear this everywhere - from people trying to sell me gym memberships to the ones trying to keep me regular with their high fibre diets. I've been working hard at getting my balance right. The right amount of work and the right amount of play. The right amount of sleep. The right amount of protein. It's all a bit much really.

This month, I'll be working on my musical balance. For the last year I have been immersed in the live music scene and have seen and worked with some truly talented artists. But the down side is that the other electronic glitchy thumping squelchy world of electronic dance has been neglected. There's no balance and the scale its decidedly lopsided.

But that is about to change ;)

The first step was to get the right toys for the job.

1 x MacBook

1 x pair of Sennheiser HD202 headphones

1 x Beghringer BCD3000

Now that I have these all nicely assembled, it's time to rebuild my musical arsenal with a selection of tunes so good they'd make the pope swear out loud.. The last mix I put together was called The Swinger's Club and was made up of killer house tracks inspired by Swing and Jazz from the 1940s and 50's.

This time around, I'll be pulling together my 1990's influences from Hip Hop and RnB and fusing this with house music (of course).

The results should be...interesting.

Here's the last mix that I put together. So much so that I've not had time to indulge in my favourite activity - the written word - for the past while. Today things reached the point where I simply need to write something, Anything. Hopefully this first stride will galvanize me in to action and verb will flow.

The fluid verbs will sadly have to wait a bit tho. There's still tons to do before the bills are even barely paid.

Oh well. Ce La Vie.

This is itself if a big thing and all the usual guys things are running through my brain - "Man Down!" "Another One Bites the Dust" & of course "I should get him a name tag for his chain."

The other unexpected complication in this whole shebang is that he had the bad sense to nominate me as his best man. This means that I get to plan the stag. And of course, the rehearsal stag, just to make sure that we get it right.

I've also been having a few other ideas for the big guy's big day. So I'm thinking that at the church we can do something like this:

(if you're reading on Facebook, go here - http://lesterhein.blogspot.com/2009/07/hadleys-getting-married.html)

And at the reception maybe a little something along these lines:
(if you're reading on Facebook, go here - http://lesterhein.blogspot.com/2009/07/hadleys-getting-married.html)

Whatever we wind up getting up to (or down to) I can guarandamtee that this is going to be one for the photo albums.

What do you think I should get them to do?

While I was checking out the "Preachers" sample pack I got the idea that some of the vocals would fit nicely to a new groove I've been playing with.

What I wound up with is a funky new groove using some of the classic acapellas. Classic house heads will recognize quite a few of the samples dropped in to this track (DJ Gregory, The Matrix, Gil Scott Heron)

So far, the track is called "7 Minutes" cos that's how long it took to lay down the bassline. Have a listen and let me know what you think.

7 Minutes by stereotype

Now lawnmowers as a whole don't have a particularly pleasing tone, but what made this one worse was that I new my car was standing close to the grass. A quick glance through the window confirmed what I suspected - the gardener was in the process of converting my car to an Eco-Friendly model was blasting it with grass from the lawnmower.

Here's what I saw:

What you can see here is a small taste of what happened after I took the picture and went back inside. My car now looks like a badly disguised G.I. Joe doing recon in the jungle.

And now it's started raining. Zille’s provincial Cabinet members also being driven around in the government garage’s fleet of second-hand vehicles – which had been used by the previous ANC provincial government.
Rapport reported that the Mercedes C230 that Western Cape Health MEC Theuns Botha uses already has 230 000km on its clock.

It was said that Zille’s financial diet has already resulted in a savings of R3million in one week for the province.

Zille said according to calculations each provincial department would be saving at least R250 000 by cutting down on lavish entertainment – a total saving of R2.5m.

And by opting for a less glamorous opening of the Western Province parliament Zille has already put at least R500 000 back in the coffers of the province’s taxpayers. She has cut her own budget for meals from R270 000 to R26 000. (This is not a typo!)

Anyone concerned about the economy, the ever increasing unemployment figures and rising poverty should compare Zille’s budget cuts with what’s been happening in other provinces. They will find, for instance, Gauteng provincial minister have used their new found powers to buy official vehicles at about R960 000 each.

Even ANC supporters and the ruling party’s alliance partners in the trade union movements – and Communist Party too – should take umbrage about this kind of spending.
This has nothing to do with party ideology. The other provincial leaders should know that the electorate will compare them to Zille.

Zille’s budget cuts should be an example to political leaders, who purport to have compassion for the less privileged. During their respective election campaigns all political parties pledged to alleviate poverty. If all provinces followed Zille’s example and cut down extravagant spending and began walking the talk, the greater the chance of realising these promises.

DAILY DISPATCH EDITORIAL 23 JUNE 2009

What's your take on the issue?

You know, sit around and talk with cool people about cool stuff. Sort of like Ellen without being gay. Or blonde. Or a woman. Anyway, last week the myself and the rest of the team at StereoType Records launched a new YouTube channel called StereoType Live.

Each week I get to interview a new artist and chat to them about live, music, performing and anything that they might find interesting. Except shoes. I don't talk about shoes. Ever.

Anyway, here is the first video from the series where I get to spend a few minutes with singing sensation Chad Saaiman.

The show is great fun and I'm learning a helluva lot, though I'm hesitant to use the term DJ, since there are no discs to jockey. Throwing the term 'Radio Personality' around also seems like a bit of a stretch when you consider that I'm mostly rambling to myself at four in the morning when most sane people are still out partying and the rest are already passed out.

The shows are fun for now and we'll see where things go from here. One thing seems pretty certain - this is going to be a fun ride ;)

Lester
