Goaltender Chris Osgood reprised his starring role from Game 1 on Saturday night to backstop the Red Wings to a 3-1 victory in Game 2 to help Detroit take a 2-0 series lead in the Stanley Cup Final. Osgood turned aside 31 of 32 shots for the second consecutive night and made a huge third period save on Sidney Crosby to maintain a 3-1 lead for the Red Wings. Rookie Justin Abdelkader was the big late goal-scorer again as his goal minutes into the third gave Detroit a 3-1 lead.

Goaltender Chris Osgood allowed a first period goal he would've liked to have had back and then shut the door from then on out as the Red Wings took the opening game of the 2009 Stanley Cup Final over the Pittsburgh Penguins by a 3-1 score. The Red Wings received a huge goal from rookie Justin Abdelkader on a play that started between he and Ville Leino -- two players that were subbing in for the injured Pavel Datsyuk and Kris Draper. Abdelkader grabbed his own rebound out of the air and knocked it into the top corner of the net to give Detroit a 3-1 lead just 2:46 into the third.

Head coach Mike Babcock updated the media on the readiness of the Red Wings' wounded during a conference call this afternoon and, as has occured earlier in the day, the news is good: "I think everybody's ready to go." That would included everyone but star center Pavel Datsyuk, whom Babcock added would be a last-minute decision prior to tomorrow night's Game 1 in Joe Louis Arena. Datsyuk has skated regularly over the last few days but wants the "explosiveness" back in his skating.

In the best news yet regarding the Red Wings' much-publicized injury woes, Bruce MacLeod of the Macomb Daily reports today (http://redwingscorner.blogspot.com/2009/05/datsyuk-lidstrom-on-ice.html) that Nicklas Lidstrom (lower body), Pavel Datsyuk (foot), Kris Draper (groin) and Andreas Lilja (concussion) are all on the ice and practicing this morning. So far only Lidstrom is a lock to play in Game 1, but he development of Datsyuk taking part in practice is a good sign he'll play as well.

GM Ken Holland told reporters today that he expects captain Nicklas Lidstrom to make his return to the lineup (http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2009/05/red_wings_nicklas_lidstrom_exp_1.html) after missing the Red Wings' last two games with a lower body injury. Holland said that Lidstrom told him that he intends on playing. Holland added that Pavel Datsyuk and Jonathan Ericsson will be game day decisions to their playing status.

You had to be uneasy. After pushing hard out of the gate and taking a 2-0 lead early in the second period, after watching a pair of two goal leads evaporate, after an abandoned stick led to a game-tying goal... You had to be nervous. After a hard push early the Ducks wouldn't go away, wouldn't relent, and wouldn't succomb. As is the case in all Game 7s, it comes down to who wants it more. Dan Cleary, abused early and often in this series, wanted it more. His goal with three minutes remaining proved to be the difference as the Red Wings advance to the Western Conference Final after a riveting 4-3 victory in Game 7 Thursday night.

The Red Wings will make one lineup change for Sunday's Game 5 in Detroit as forward Justin Abdelkader -- fresh off a call-up from Grand Rapids -- will take the place of Tomas Kopecky on Detroit's fourth line (http://www.freep.com/article/20090508/SPORTS05/90508070/1048/SPORTS/Abdelkader+in+for+banged-up+Kopecky+in+Game+5). Kopecky is officially out with the dreaded "upper body injury" that was suffered during his third-period bout with Francois Beauchemin Thursday night. Center Kris Draper and defenseman Brian Rafalski will remain out of the lineup as they continue to recover from their injuries.

New lines provide spark in Game 4 rout

Heading into Thursday's critical Game 4 in Anaheim head coach Mike Babcock said that he was "close" to switching up the Red Wings' forward lines. It took a Corey Perry goal 42 seconds into Game 4 and a few bad shifts for him to pull the trigger. The results were explosive. The line of Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula and Marian Hossa was outright dominant on the ice as the trio combined for four goals and seven points in a 6-3 blowout victory for the Red Wings. Game 5 is Sunday in Detroit.

Same old story: Rafalski, Draper out for Game 4

It's not really surprising, is it? Ansar Kahn from Mlive.com (http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2009/05/red_wings_brian_rafalski_will.html) and Helene St. James from the Detroit Free Press (http://www.freep.com/article/20090506/BLOG09/90506096/1048/sports/No+Rafalski++no+Draper++no+changes+for+Wings+in+Game+4) update us this afternoon on the statuses of both defenseman Brian Rafalski and center Kris Draper: Neither will play in Thursday's critical Game 4. Kahn dug some quotes out of Rafalski that give off the feeling that a return in this series for Rafalski may be a reach.
