SOPA and PIPA: The Cause and the Controversy

Much has been made in the last few weeks about two bills currently being debated in the US House of Representatives. If passed, SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect Intellectual Property Act) have the potential to put a stop to the illegal online distribution of copyrighted material. However, opponents argue that the vague wording of the bills combined with the broad range of powers they intend to impart upon US government agencies would effectively give them the power to censor the Internet, and thus become a direct violation of the First Amendment.

The Bills

The theory behind the bills is that they are necessary for enforcing copyright laws in the swiftly developing information age, where the world is becoming a smaller place and international boundaries are becoming less significant.

Current legislation does not account for intellectual property offered over various direct download and torrent sites if they are registered and operated in countries other than the US, as this legally makes them a foreign entity. Alternatively, if their servers operate outwith the States, this means the origin of the copyright violations were not within US jurisdiction. Technically, if no infringement took place on US soil, no crime was committed under US law.

The purpose of the bills is to grant powers designed to rectify this technicality and take some steps towards allowing the law to catch up with advancing technology.

The Support

Unsurprisingly, two of the principal supporters of the bills are the Recording Industry Association of America and the Motion Picture Association of America. Studies have concluded that online file sharing annually costs the music labels and movie studios around $60 billion in lost revenue. Other supporters include a number of music and movie guilds such as Directors Guild of America, the Screen Actors Guild and the Songwriters Guild of America, as well as large companies such as Nike, Ford Motor Company, L’Oreal and Viacom.

By giving greater power to those charged with preventing online piracy, it is hoped that the practice will be halted and the income from lost sales returned to the economy.
The Opposition

Much of the bills’ opposition comes from technology and Internet companies such as Facebook, Yahoo!, Google, Wikipedia, reddit and eBay. Individuals opposing the bills include Reid Hoffmann (Executive Vice President of PayPal and Executive Chairman and co-founder of LinkedIn) and Evan Williams (Director and co-founder of Twitter).

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act, passed in 1998, allows intellectual property owners who feel a website is violating their copyright to submit a request for the offending content’s removal. However, under the provisions of SOPA, a single validated complaint would be grounds for completely blocking a website, as the active monitoring of its content becomes the responsibility of its operators.

Concern is that fear over the swift and merciless use of the new powers will stifle innovation and creativity as people will be required to spend more time scrutinizing every single aspect of their website. This can cause significant issues for online communities or for any part site where aspects of its contents are user-generated (such as its forums).

The Protests

On January 18 2011, a coordinated Internet protest of the bills took place. Over 100,000 websites staged some form of visual protest against the proposed legislation, with Wikipedia and reddit blacking out completely and presenting a modified homepage suggesting such access blockades was precisely what the government would grant itself the power to do at will, and invited visitors to contact their representative and voice their opposition. Other major sites such as WordPress, Mozilla and Flickr changed their home page to declare their own concerns.

As well as such huge internet presences, protestors also included numerous professional webcomic authors, such as xkcd’s Randall Munroe and Questionable Content’s Jeff Jacques, whose popularity – and thus livelihood – was possible due to the unrestricted sharing of their material.

Four days before the blackout took place, the White House blog posted a declaration that “any effort to combat online piracy must guard against the risk of online censorship of lawful activity.” Following up, on the eve of the protest a further statement was issued declaring the White House “will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet.

The Outcome

Following the recent takedown of Megaupload, the passing of the bills may see the end of similar file uploading sites such as RapidShare, which allow people to share vast volumes of data without the physical need for transfer. Also in the crosshairs are torrent sites such as PirateBay that will inevitably contain copyrighted material amongst that distributed by its owners.

At first glance, the bills seem relatively harmless to the average Internet user who does not regularly download whole libraries of music, TV or movies or provide access to sites that allow such activity. But it may be that the advert provider of your favorite webcomic links to a site that used some unauthorized song lyrics in its content. Maybe a TV review site used screenshots from a show recorded and then distributed online. Perhaps a blogger might innocently link to a film site containing news of interest to their readers, where in that site’s forums a user offers a Filesonic link to a misappropriated copy of The Avengers.

Although the creation of SOPA and PIPA may have been done with the best of intentions, it may well be all too soon that their sting is felt by those they were not originally intended to target.

Holding on to textbooks in an online world?

Within days, we will have entered the third year of the second decade of the 21st Century. Most newspapers and magazines have been available on the internet for a decade. In the world of higher education today, one in three students have taken some or all of their courses over the Internet, and online degrees are becoming common among graduates in the workforce. We live in a digital age. Smartphones abound on campuses, and e-readers are affordable for just about any budget. So why, given the technology of the times, aren’t students embracing digital textbooks?

In black and white

Somewhere not far behind tuition, room and board and textbook costs are among the bigger expenses of getting an education. It’s not uncommon for a single textbook to run upwards of 200 dollars for a single course, and resale value of textbooks is only a tiny fraction of the original cost. Digital texts, however, can be purchased at a considerable savings compared to bound copies, often times costing half that of a traditional book. Renting a text, when available, is even more affordable, though access to the digital copy will likely expire soon after the course ends. With these opportunities for savings, though, why is it that students are staying away from digital books in droves with digital purchases expected to barely exceed ten percent of all purchases? Two reasons surface, though neither is exactly satisfying.

Experience and expectations

One very understandable reason why students are reluctant to use digital textbooks stems from what some might call human nature. People, so the reasoning goes, are most comfortable with what they already know. If this is the case, we’re at the beginning of a generation of future college goers who’ve spent their elementary and secondary educations holding, carrying and touching the pages of bound textbooks. Using some form of an e-reader to access even the same material found in a bound issue is a foreign experience, despite the fact that the information is exactly the same. But here’s where the issue becomes more complicated and the reasoning behind the avoidance of digital textbooks does make some logical sense.

At present, students and administrators are openly disappointed with the quality of digital texts. With all of the opportunity to be interactive and engaging in a way a traditional textbook could never be, many digital books are simply the same material as their bound counterparts, only in digital form. Students, nearly all of whom have grown up with evolving online games, smartphones and even websites have come to expect a lot from their electronic resources and that’s just as important of an experience as is their comfort with holding traditional books.

A generation thing

Necessity being the mother of invention, it is safe to say that publishers of school textbooks will and are figuring out ways to improve their products. While that’s clearly bad news for printers of books, publishers stand to gain real cost savings by transitioning more to digital products. By providing interactive experiences for students, not just those in college, but for those in primary and secondary schools, the two main reasons for which students today avoid digital textbooks may be replaced with a new habit students enjoy and embrace.

But instructors are now finding ways to incorporate social media into their teaching, both inside and out of the classroom. And by giving students the opportunity to use social media to enhance their learning experiences, instructors are discovering something interesting: students are using social media to facilitate collaboration in learning.

The issue of digital literacy

With Facebook putting time, money and effort into cultivating educational resources for higher education and teachers using Twitter to communicate with students, social media is becoming an integral part of teaching and learning. But using social media to help students collaborate requires a certain level of digital literacy—and, surprisingly, many students aren’t as digitally literate as you might think.

An article in the Guardian from March of this year makes the distinction between digital residents and digital visitors —people who have integrated online activity into their everyday lives, and people who use technology for short periods of time and then log off. For college students, time is precious—and many students who didn’t have constant access to technology in their younger years might take a while to acclimate themselves to using technology every day. Students who come to campus with a laptop, a smartphone and an MP3 player may be more open to collaborating with classmates online, but the technological learning curve for other students might be steep. Holding on to textbooks in an online world?

The $50 Indian Tablet Aakash

When the Kindle Fire was released at $200, people immediately thought about what it would mean for students.

Then, the Aakash tablet was released in India for a whopping $50.

It’s no accident or good fortune that led to the tablet being made that cheaply, though. The Indian government worked closely with British developer DataWind to produce a computer that was cheap enough that impoverished rural students could afford them.

Originally, they promised students a $35 laptop that ran on the Linux operating system, but later announced they would be making a tablet for that price instead. The switch was met with severe pessimism, but just a little over a year later, the dream mostly became reality.

The tablet is slightly more expensive than the target cost, but with the government promising to fund half of it for students, it brings the cost to $25, including shipping and insurance.

The tablet began production on Oct. 5, 2011. It will be sold in stores under the name of UbiSlate 7 for just $60. While it’s doubtful that sales will make up for what the government is putting up for students, it will tip the scales a little more evenly.

Aakash, Hindi for ‘sky,’ was created to link India’s higher learning institutions through one online learning program. The program will be populated with different sub-programs, all designed to further students educations.

India’s job market has shifted in recent years from being agricultural to technology and service oriented. The change means that their educational practices have had to grow tremendously to allow their students to keep up. As the job market expands, workers who are educated and technologically savvy will be in high demand. India’s program to bring the tablets to poorer students is a way for them to ensure that everyone has a fair chance to compete for the best jobs.

It may seem like a lot of work for one tablet to accomplish, but it can succeed with a little bit of effort from everyone. The tablet will give students access to the internet at all times, and the solar energy feature will allow them to always have power. This means that the entire world is at their fingertips at all times. Students who are willing to work a little harder than most will be able to read news reports and essays from the greatest minds in the world. Students like this are the ones that will be sought after when they graduate.

The tablets come pre-loaded with educational programs from the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology that will help students along the subjects that the mission feels are important for its students. Since these are the experts in the country, they’ve based their projected lessons on research and knowledge. The system is incredibly hands-on from the government, but perhaps the unifying function of it is just what students need.

Aahash may not change everything, but the fact that a country was willing to sponsor the creation of a computing device for its students may well flip what education in India looks like. If the United States were to take similar measures, it could very well trigger a wave of educational reform.

Top 5 Features of iPhone 4S [Review]

Apple recently launched its latest iPhone – the iPhone 4S. While many people had been hotly anticipating the iPhone 5 they felt a little bit let down by the 4S that finally made an appearance. Despite some disappointment being voiced on all corners of the internet the iPhone 4S is still the most powerful and feature filled iPhone to date, and looks set to be the biggest selling too. So how does the device fare and what are its best features?

Processor

The iPhone 5 comes with the same processor as the iPad 2 – the A5 chip. This is a very powerful 1GHz dual core processor means the new iPhone has twice the power of the iPhone 4 and means it is far more capable of performing numerous activities efficiently. This is in addition to the new GPU which means the phone now has seven times the graphical processing power of the original and has some amazing capabilities.

Not only is this the fastest iPhone yet, but it is also the fastest smartphone on the market. Even though some Android handsets such as the Galaxy S2 and HTC Sensation have faster 1.2GHz processors, the iPhone 4S outperforms them in numerous speed tests and performance trials.

Camera

The iPhone 4S comes with a new 8MP camera, which is capable of 1080p video recording. This ensures that the device is more than equal to many of those other premium phones out there. The new iPhone combines this with the already existing Retina display to great effect. The iPhone 4S produces some fantastic images and is a huge leap compared to the iPhone 4’s 5MP camera.

Even though this camera may sound like it is just matching what is already available on the current top end smartphones, the iPhone 4S’ camera offers a picture quality that cannot truly be conveyed in terms of megapixels. Thanks to an improved lens and CMOS as well as a new IR filter and Image Signal Processor, the camera on the iPhone 4S offers some of the highest quality, vibrant and crystal clear images that can be found on a smartphone camera.

Not only has the camera seen an improvement but the way that you interact with the camera has improved too. You can now gain direct access to the camera app by double tapping to home button, and can even take photos with a physical camera button by appropriating the volume controls on the side of the phone. All of the technical upgrades made to this camera by Apple make it one of the fastest cameras found on a smartphone, allowing you take a picture (theoretically) every half a second.

Antenna

The new iPhone 4S comes with dual antennas. This means that the phone is capable of switching from one antenna to another, depending on which signal is stronger. This is a great help and a jump from the iPhone 4 and the antenna issues that plagued its release. This will also mean a more solid internet connection and really improves the devices standing in this area which is an important leap forward.

One of the reasons that Apple were able to make the iPhone 4 so slim and pocketable was that they added the antenna around the side of the handset, rather than inside the casing. While this was a great leap forward in terms of design it had the unfortunate effect of cutting out phone signal while the iPhone was being held in a certain position. The new operating system has been one of the most important Apple developments of recent years and comes with an array of new software features earlier iPhones didn’t have. This new iOS 5 allows for notifications in a similar way to Android, has iMessage a new improved Newsstand and Reader feature. It also comes with wireless iCloud support which means it is able to connect wirelessly.

iMessage is Apple’s version of BlackBerry Messenger and allows iPhone users to chat to each other over the internet. This can be used by iPhone users in a similar manner to SMS messages, except iMessage does not incur a charge like SMS does. iMessage also allows users to send pictures and videos to each other, use smileys and emoticons and even see when the other person is typing.

Another great social feature that has been added is Find my Friends. This allows you to find the location of your friends on a map. You can use this to locate friends at a gig or even to help direct people to your home in case they should get lost.

While many of these features are now available to all iPhone users via a software update, the main attraction of the iPhone 4S’ interface is only available on the iPhone 4S: Siri.

The Siri feature is the most advanced voice control feature ever and allows for voice control to become a feasible option on phones. This technology means you can dictate messages, what you want apps to do, as well as note entries with complete accuracy.

While there are voice controls on many smartphones today, these are usually limited to a certain feature, such as searching Google.
