Monumental Games will be giving the world’s first live demonstrations of PRIME, the only commercially available browser-based 3D MMO engine, at this year’s Game Connection in Lyon (November 15-18, 2010).

PRIME provides a complete set of tools for developers looking to create and operate 3D worlds within browsers, incorporating real time lighting, 3D animation and visual effects. These worlds can then be populated by thousands of players, all interacting with each other at the same time. It enables developers to build and launch 3D MMOs rapidly, providing significant savings in both time and financial resources and hence reducing risk.

PRIME is currently being trialled by a select number of developers before being made available to the larger development community immediately after the Game Connection event.

PRIME has been built by Monumental Games ‘from the ground up’ for MMOs. It is fully browser-based and Facebook-compatible, while the downloadable plug-in enabler is sub-1Mb, making installation simple and quick.

The live demonstrations at Game Connection will give developers hands on experience of PRIME allowing them to try out various elements of the toolset to start making games. Those interested in arranging a demonstration can fix up a meeting by using the Game Connection meeting system or by contacting Monumental through the PRIME website at http://www.the-prime-engine.com.

The Nottingham based outfit, which features in the listing for the first time, has seen its sales grow 146 per cent a year from an annualised £346,000 in 2006 to £5.2m in 2009. Founded in 2005, Monumental primarily focuses on online games, and its new PRIME technology enables thousands of people to play simultaneously in 3D worlds embedded in social networks such as Facebook.

Monumental is also the developer behind titles such as MotoGP 09/10 (Capcom) and Football Superstars (Cybersports).

The full findings were published in a special eight-page supplement with the business section of The Sunday Times on September 19, 2010 and on www.fasttrack.co.uk.

The former CEO of Codemasters and managing director of Playground Games will work with Monumental CEO Rik Alexander and the senior management team to drive the business forward. Nick brings nearly 20 years of experience in the gaming industry to the post, where he will help to build on the success of titles including Moto GP 09/10 and Football Superstars.

The appointment comes following the recent announcement by the leading developer that it plans to release Little Horrors, the first 3D MMO for Facebook this summer.
The game, entitled ‘Little Horrors’, is set in an infant school for monsters. Rooted in the desire to connect people in a new way online, ‘Little Horrors’ is based on simple games people remember from the school playground, such as “tag” and “stuck in the mud”, but with an added twist.

The Nottingham-based game developer aims to have its browser-based MMO platform ready to go live in beta in summer 2010. Following launch, Monumental Games developers will continually work on improvements to the game based on user feedback and trends. They plan to use key performance indicators (KPIs) to find out what players love about the games and what they think could be better.

This development initially stems from a funding grant awarded to Monumental Games by the Technology Strategy Board in August 2008 to develop browser-based MMO technology, but recently received a significant boost following investment from the Capital for Enterprise Fund.
Become a fan of Little Horrors on Facebook to keep up to date with the game’s development.

Monumental Games has made three key appointments as it structures its business for the future to take advantage of business growth opportunities and technology advances.

The online games developer has created three divisions to focus on building its offerings and skills across the core areas of its business.

Monumental Conversion and Emerging Technologies (CET) will work on future technology developments within gaming such as augmented reality and motion controllers as well as technical conversion. It will be headed up by Michael Delves who has over 23 years in the gaming industry working with the likes of Hasbro, Software Creations, Acclaim and
Silverback Studios.

Monumental Online has been created to develop the Monumental Technology Suite and existing Massively-Multiplayer Online (MMO) games, Football Superstars, published by Cyber Sports, and the newer Hunters World. Gylan Hunter has been chosen to head up this area of the business and is also the chief art director. He was employee number three at Monumental Games, joining back in 2005. He has over 12 years’ industry experience and has worked on games such as Need for Speed, Alone In The Dark and Moto GP 2 and 3.

Monumental Racing will continue its work on Moto GP, which is published by Capcom, and will further develop Monumental Games’ racing technology capabilities. This division will be headed by Andy Norman who started his professional life at the BBC. He entered the gaming industry in 2000 and has worked with leading players such as Eidos, EA and SEGA before joining Monumental Games towards the end of 2009.
