On Sunday 16 February 2014 RefWorks will be “making improvements to its internal systems to accommodate a growing number of users and reduce the need for future downtime”.

We’re told an eight hour (8) maintenance window is needed to perform these enhancements, which in the UK will last from 03:00 until 12:00 approximately on Sunday February 16.

During this time period RefWorks users can expect sporadic availability, including short periods of complete downtime. We anticipate that access issues and possible functionality problems will last anywhere from 3 to 15 minutes. If you experience issues with RefWorks during this maintenance window we recommend that you close your browser session, and return to RefWorks at a later time.

Please email any enquiries on this to refworks.support@proquest.com

This message is for anyone who is a current user of Refworks who uses the Keele “Group Code” as part of their Refworks login process.

Users in this category log in from the www.refworks-cos.com homepage rather than the Keele website, and may do so if they, for example, share an account with others, or have created an account outside the Keele single sign on system.

If you do not use the Group Code as part of your Refworks login, then the following does not affect you. There’s no need to read further!

We’ve recently been notified by Refworks that as of 9 December 2013, users will no longer need to use the Group Code to log into Refworks. All you will need to log in (from at the www.refworks-cos.com homepage) is your existing username and password, with no need to initially enter the Group Code at the start of your login procedure.

Anyone who has set up their Refworks account using their Keele credentials are entirely unaffected by this change. Please continue to use that login, via the link provided on the Library website.

Please contact support@refworks-cos.com if you have any queries or issues regarding this change, which we hope will be of minimal impact.

This message has also been sent to the Campus Staff email list.

For those people who need to login to Talis Aspire our Reading Lists system, it has now been upgraded to use normal IT logins instead of the old ‘classic Athens’ details. Note that consulting the system normally does not require any login – you will only be asked to login if you want to add personal details to the system or if you have rights to edit lists

For those of you who have logged-in previously there is a one-time migration process to ensure that any details attached to your ID, such as lists which you can edit or personal comments, are made accessible from your IT login. On first login you will be prompted to enter your IT login details, then there will be a message box telling you about the changes and prompting you to login again with your old ‘classic Athens’ details. Once this information has been entered everything will be copied across and your details will be accessible. Future logins will only ask you for your normal IT login information.

Please let us know if you have any problems.

Ernest Warrillow (1909-2000), press photographer for The Sentinel newspaper for over 50 years, gifted his private photographic collection of over 1800 negatives to the University in 1981. The Warrillow Collection depicts the changing landscape of North Staffordshire from the 1860s to the 1970s and we are thrilled that the camera used to take many of these photographs has now been donated to the Special Collections and Archives by Mr Alan Vickerman, Warrillow’s close friend and former colleague.
Warrillow made his unique camera from brass plate, just large enough to hold 9x12cm glass slides, and fitted it with a rare 100mm front cell focussing GB-Kershaw 630 lens. The camera comes complete with its original custom-made carrying case, with space to house a small tripod, flash gun and a dozen glass slides.
