I will say that there’s even more Canadian in there than usual this week, partly due to Ro Cemm being this week’s Guest Informant.

Ro makes amazing compilations of Canadian music for The Line of Best Fit, among many other things, and we recorded a conversation out the back of the Brixton Windmill at a gig last week.

This is it, then. All Back No Front number one.

If you were familiar with this podcast when it was New Noise you’ll not notice a great deal of difference. It’s an hour or so of new songs cobbled together with links of varying quality and relevance. Fittingly, a simple approach remains key. Things have been fiddled with a little bit, though. Firstly, I’m going to invite a guest to pick one of the songs each week.

I hope Guest Informant might break things up a bit. Not only does it mean that I'll get to hear what some of my favourite musicians, producers, label bosses, writers, DJs, bloggers, whoever really (I’m considering getting my dad on*) are enjoying, but it also gave me an opportunity to mess around making a music bed out of one of my favourite songs.

Given that Dan Reeves is 33% of Cold Pumas, 100% of The Soft Walls and the man who runs the prolifically delicious Faux Discx label, he was a shoe-in to be Guest Informant number one.

Secondly, I’ve altered the recording process. I’d prefer for your head not to flop off your neck with tedium so I won’t explain how exactly, but the changes should help me publish a little more regularly, more reliably.

Well, more reliably than before, anyway. I’m aiming for Wednesdays.

You can stop smiling in that way.

Finally, some very talented people designed and made me a website. This website. The main aim is for everything to be in one place: podcasts; news of ABNF gigs (of which there will soon be more); radio tracklists; music writing, and whatever else comes up.

The podcast should still be available to digest or download via iTunes on the same feed, plus Soundcloud, Mixcloud and the other RSS feeds, but inevitably something will break down somewhere. If you need to sling me an email to tell me I’m a cretinous fathead, do it via info@allbacknofront.com or @jonhillcock, and I'll try to help (or get somebody else to).

Just smashed a personal best. 15 songs squeezed into a 65 minute podcast.

It’s a bumper bargain bonus fun-size best of edition which includes a healthy swipe of stuff I played while on the radio recently. I know you pored over every minute of every show several times through but it won’t hurt to have a quick refresher for the hell of it.

Eels on Heels is a peculiar name for a band, granted, but don’t hold it against them. If you liked Cold Pumas last week then I reckon you’ll love this Italian trio’s crashing punk attack too.

Here’s the first of two podcasts I plan to release within five days. A proposal burdened with sheer strapping insanity, I know, but bear with me.

When I started this podcast project a driving idea was to force myself into an editorial corner whereby I’d limit myself to a straight ten (or thereabouts) songs, whatever the circumstance. Two years down the line I think it’s proved a worthwhile exercise in fine-tuning my musical appetite and helped me locate the nub* of my own critical faculties and taste.

But last week, saddled with 23 solid gold drops of noise, the task proved too much. I struggled. By Friday night (sent over the edge at the news of a [brilliant] new song by Cold Pumas) I was mewling like a sickly kitten about it on Twitter. Sod it, I thought, I’m making another double.

You may recall I tried releasing two podcasts simultaneously a few months ago: an exercise that proved ultimately unfulfilling and especially time consuming. So this time I’m leaving a bit of a gap between them.

This first foray into the musical mist includes that Cold Pumas newie, plus pop, rock, filthy dirty hip hop, prog-rock-abstract–techno-inspired funk-afro-metal-industrial-noise, (or as I like to call it: PRATFAMIN), proto-synth soul from 1984 and an opener from a hairy country magpie.

Along the way you’ll also scrunch your nose at muddled musings on the death of Word magazine; the notion of what constitutes ‘challenging’ music; the fallacy of six-month best of lists; and how to go about managing a crippling habit with ever-depleting funds.

* “Locate the nub”. Sheesh.

Contained herein: music I’ve wanted to play for months; music which will probably appeal to fans of Women; music that could have you staring through things; music recommended by Gold Panda; and music by a well-established band under a different name. I’m not allowed to say who it is.

With regard to the bits in between the songs, I seem inordinately excitable in places. Sorry about that. There’s a chance you’ll actually be able to discern which of the links were recorded directly after a giddy slug of coffee.

There are a couple of announcements on this week’s podcast.

The first involves news of a gig I’ve organized.

The second explains why ‘New Noise’ is no more.

You are required to get your subs up for a good three quarters of the music included. Low-end rumbles seem to dominate, albeit in a variety of different forms including the liquid lovestep of Deft, the Black Noise of Erol Alkan and Richard Norris’ Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve, plus a summery bouncer by way of Bodhi’s euphoric ShadowBox refix.

There’s further groove-driven reverberation from a brand new EP by underground London collective Old Apparatus, much hyped yet hypnotic hip hop from Kitty Pryde underpinned by a total beaut of a hazy beat from up ‘n’ coming producer SELA, and Can-esque psychodrama from a brilliant new Vision Fortune EP. It’s all rounded off rather violently with some punishing yet unmissable organic techno from London’s California Jr.

In the June issue of Wire, Joseph Stannard interviews East London local Ralph Cumbers – Bass Clef – who speculates on the ‘regeneration’ of Hackney and the surrounding areas in 2012. He describes the inevitable ‘awful, creeping presence’ of cash-soaked Olympic sprawl, and ponders whether attempts to sanitise and gentrify the area will, in the long term, threaten its reputation for diversity and counter-cultural dissent. Stannard also hints at an interesting parallel: between the musician’s environmental concern and the vintage modular synth equipment he uses (along with a heavy late-80s Acid House influence) to create something new and unique.

By coincidence just this afternoon I heard Robert Elms on BBC London in conversation with historian Alan Dein about a new photographic exhibition: After You’ve Gone: East End Shopfronts, 1988. In an effort to capture the last remnants of a bygone era, Dein took it upon himself to photograph hundreds of derelict shopfronts of East London, many of which were to be demolished to make way for modern developments as the eighties drew to an end.

The striking collection of pictures can be seen on the Spitalfields Life blog and in an exhibition at Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives. For me personally, they mark a time when distinguishing features and specialisms (note CH N. Katz of Brick Lane, vendors of paper and string, above) weren’t necessarily celebrated, but merely a localized, unconscious way of life.

Perhaps twenty years from now, when the Olympic dust finally settles, let's hope that the rich cultural diversity, individualism and dissent of East London isn’t a distant memory obscured by a spent, dilapidated shopfront.

The haunted rave of Bass Clef’s ‘Stenaline Metranil Solar Flare’ is one of ten songs on this new podcast. Alongside it: the rambunctious return of Chips for the Poor, something from the deliriously good new Laurel Halo album, the second release on Sonic Router records – a rattling, bouncing bomb by Watville - and brand new songs by Girls Names, PET, Meursault and the much talked-about Savages.

I type while sat in the corner of the Dome in Brighton shortly before taking part in an 'in conversation' interview session with Xfm's John Kennedy at The Great Escape. It's a small window within which I'm trying to upload this podcast, which I recorded at home yesterday morning and edited in a hotel room last night. After I'm finished with the JK interview I'm jumping on a train to Manchester to cover Nemone on BBC 6 Music at 7am tomorrow.

So what I'm saying is, I'm short on time and can't scribble a natty blurb selling the music on this podcast.

Expect a man with a mower, an apology, and 10 quite brilliant pieces of music. But then I suppose I would say that.

Uploading a podcast towards the end of a Friday feels slightly like turning up at a party with cold beer minutes after everyone else has left for a club.

New Noise - 17.04.12 - Record Store Day 2012 Special

The fifth annual Record Store Day takes place this Saturday 21st April. To mark the occasion I invited the UK representative and Rough Trade East boss Spencer Hickman to record a New Noise podcast special.

 Musically - along with a few of Spencer's favourites - there's a chance to hear some of the most sought after releases of this year's event: namely a split 7" which, on either side, features Mastodon covering Feist and vice versa; a piece of punk rock history from The Dead Boys; the first new PIL song for over 20 years; new Beach House and an unreleased Top of the Pops recording of David Bowie's 'Starman'.   

In the interview Spencer and I discuss the plans, logistics and limited releases of RSD '12, and the possibility that the event may have even become too big and commercial for its own good. We also cover the current state of independent record shopping and vinyl sales in the UK, especially in light of the decline of HMV, and I finally get the chance to ask why it is that Rough Trade is so blimmin' expensive.

The first New Noise podcast of 2012 gathers up some of the songs I've been listening to relentlessly over the past month or so (the tracks from the Bathetic Records Expressway compilation, Sinkane, Hospitality, Altarboy, Amateur Best, Coolrunnings and Way Yes) alongside a few of the best things I’ve discovered within the past week (Constant Mongrel, Schoolboy Q, Cross Record).   

Originally I'd decided to give over 100% of the podcast to flagging up the songs I'd been enjoying over Christmas and January – principally all the new stuff I'd played on the 6music shows (the main reason for the absence of a new New Noise) – but while putting it together last Friday I couldn't help feeling that it needed a few fresh bits too.

This is a turbo podcast. I started compiling it at 8am this morning and managed to get it recorded, edited and uploaded etc within 3 hours - a new personal best. I'm most likely now listening to these songs (loudly) on repeat while bombing down the M4 to Minehead for ATP's Nightmare Before Christmas.

New Noise - 28.10.11

Sea Weeds are a Minneapolis duo, one half of which is Lizzie Carolan of Total Babe, (a band whose chipper, twee-pop songs I played repeatedly on the radio a couple of winters ago). When news of a new project arrived in my inbox from the label this week I anticipated something good, but not quite this good. Fall Boi is one of two free downloads preceding the imminent release of a full length, and loads the front end of this week’s podcast with weighty swoon, drenched as it is with sumptuous orchestral tension. It might appeal to anyone who this week has been enjoying the new Summer Camp album, or perhaps the welcome return of Mazzy Star.

  From there, I finally get the chance to share the A-side of PET’s second single - Middle Child Syndrome, something brand new from the upcoming Dauwd EP, a brilliantly paced cut from the free Gonjasufi EP which surfaced this week and a Regina-meets-Joanna-meets-Scout album closer from Samantha Crain.   

Elsewhere Krampfhaft serves up a distinctive hypnotic Dutch blend of rhythmic mastery with Makin’ Magic, there’s a total bruiser from the epic new Altered Natives record, and the heartbreaking chorus of Lover’s Island by Joel Brandt is sure to be swimming around your mind for at least a week.  Things come to a close much as they begun: with a duo who deal in swooping crescendo, only unlike Sea Weed’s opener, Slow Dance by London’s Hunt in Pairs grapples with a rising undercurrent of electronic clicks, whirrs and thuds.  

Finally, I must flag up the complete and utter pop perfection from The Proper Ornaments, who I also ought to thank for indirectly introducing me to a deliciously sinister song by The Free Design from 1967, which presumably gave them their name.

In a break with recent form it’s a new New Noise on a Thursday. What a novelty.   

Included in this week’s collection, (ideally suited to chunky listening systems): deep dark sonic exploration from the likes of Pariah, Peaking Lights and LA’s Eras, Cleveland’s Gap Dream invites us to spend time with a mysterious loner on 'My Other Man', Belfast’s Girls Names and Melbourne’s Twerps demonstrate immaculate songwriting chops and Vanilla smoothes out the rough with six minutes of sumptuous space-hop.

  There’s also more Nova Scotian crunch: a shot of woozy garage blues from duo Cousins - sounding like some sort of delicious Clinic/Thickfreakness-era Black Keys hybrid - and brand new Zomby.

There’s quite a bit of guitar on this week’s podcast. Nova Scotia’s masters of cracked indie pop Quaker Parents make a thrilling return, along with five combined minutes of bouncing garage surf pop from the LA’s Fidlar and Hollows of Chicago, plus an outstanding, (and previously unheard) track from the awesome imminent debut album from True Panther’s Bay Area trio Wet Illustrated.

  Sufjan fans might be fond of ‘Maps’ by underground lo-fi folk man Little Kid, which makes a neat bedfellow alongside a somewhat topical pick off the new Sea Pinks record.   

There’s also something meaty and electronic from a remote corner of Russia courtesy of Art Crime, the weird, warped and sprawling future hip hop of Pyramid Vritra, an electrifying cover of Portishead’s ‘Chase The Tear’ by No Pain in Pop’s Doldrums, and the very (very) welcome return of Ela Orleans, who provides what I think might be my favourite ever New Noise opener.   

Oh, and I also need your opinion about some music that I can’t quite make up my mind about. I’m anticipating an extreme response either way.

“..and then you step outside in the sunshine, and you can’t believe you would ever go underground… that’s crazy!”, sings Eleanor Friedberger on 'Roosevelt Island', a song on this week’s podcast.

Though I’m most likely taking the line utterly out of its intended context, it’s one that resonated with me as I walked along in the London sunshine today.

  Every week I fret enormously over the music I include. Is it too bleak? Is it too pop? Is it too awkward? Is it too try-hard? Is it too limp? Is it too straight? Is it too grandiose? Is it too underground? Is it too overground?   

My podcast is called 'New Noise' (a name I regretted approximately a week after choosing it in 2006). I’m sure there are plenty of people who arrive hoping to hear something more akin to the Refused classic - after which it is named - and quickly leave. I know there are people who fast-forward the vocal-free electronic inclusions each week, probably wondering what on earth it is I like about them. Then I’m sure there are those who baulk at even the merest hint of a hook or melody. That’s if they listen at all.  

Last night, in a mildly drunken, frustrated humid haze at about 1am, having fruitlessly searched all week for the goods, I reluctantly placed what I’d found into playlist, stuck it on my phone and called it a night, pretty unsatisfied with my haul.

  This morning, travelling into London on a phenomenally bright and beautiful Autumn day, I listened to the 15 songs again. Jesus. Each and every one sounded amazing.   

This all proves a few things: 1) context is everything. 2) I worry too much. 3) My own fickleness sickens me.

  I hope you find something you like, even if the sun’s not out while you listen.

With Peggy Sue delivering the musical goods on last week’s podcast, a fortnight of adding songs to a New Noise potentials desktop doc. left me with a long glittering list of shiny diamonds.   

Having sifted out the flawed pretenders we’re left with the following: a glossy slice of bubbling greatness from Lapalux; the very welcome return of Earlies/Late Cord man John Mark Lapham - this time with DM Stith - as The Revival Hour; a scything post-riot beast from DRMCNT and brand new Tough Loveliness courtesy of London’s Weird Dreams.

  Then there’s Jonwayne, weighing in with killer rhymes laced over a Vanguards sample. Fairewell and TV Girl offer their own unique hints at pop greatness, and Sacred Harp very nearly threaten to complete music itself with distinctive, shimmering Norwegian majesty.  

New Jersey’s Real Estate also present us with a second taster from their upcoming debut for Domino, included at the 11th hour when I was forced to pull an original selection at the very last minute. For this reason, (being unable to re-record the link at this stage on a Friday night), you’ll notice I mysteriously make absolutely no reference to it whatsoever on the podcast.

All that, and I’m finally able to share a brilliantly sinister take on Love Buzz by Edinburgh’s PET, this week’s opener, which I’ve been impatiently spinning to myself with no small amount of repressed glee for a few weeks now.

In January 2007 I contacted Brighton duo Peggy Sue and The Pirates asking to play a song of theirs – ‘The New Song’ - on a new podcast I’d just started making: New Noise. Since then, the band have released an EP, slightly changed their name, gained a member, signed to Wichita records and released an album: 2010’s ‘Fossils & Other Phantoms’.   

This week, 18 months on, Peggy Sue released the follow up: ‘Acrobats’. The album – produced by John Parish – has been well received, variously described as ‘a brooding monster’, ‘open and honest … deeply shy and brooding’, and ‘a huge step forward’. But do the band agree?  

Having been afforded the opportunity to interview Katy Young, Rosa Slade and Olly Joyce a couple of times in the past, on this New Noise Special I attempt to dig a little deeper. As well as talking to the band collectively about the new record and its reception I wanted to try and explore more about each member’s individual role in the outfit, and so asked to interview each of them separately, too.   

Along with a few selections from the new album, Katy, Rosa and Olly also pick songs by the likes of PJ Harvey, Neil Young, Department of Eagles, Townes Van Zandt and Chad VanGaalen.

As I allude to in one of this week’s wind-filled wordburps, (or ‘links’ as some call them) this New Noise contains a last minute replacement, crammed in at the eleventh hour when I realised mustard wasn’t quite being cut - lightly dented even - by something I was going to include. Listen in to hear what got the nod instead, and why.   

I also mention that this podcast could well have included 10, 10 minute expansive, dreamy instrumentals*. For whatever reason I think I’ve been one of those sort of moods all week.   

“Jon is a daydreamer,” read one of my old school reports. “He must learn to apply himself and stop wasting time if he is to succeed in any capacity”.   

As I finally get around to posting this - at 7.32pm on a Saturday evening - I concede that Sir probably had a point. Sadly I couldn’t blame The Field when I was 15.

On a related note, I would now like to ask you to spin your own minds back in time. But not very far.

It is the afternoon of Friday 19th August 2011. You’ve just had an amazing sandwich for lunch, a hefty, unhealthy beast glooped in mayo, but what the hell, it’s Friday! You’re dreaming of the weekend: a night out tonight; a bit of football tomorrow, perhaps. As an Arsenal fan you’re envisaging a welcome change in fortune, a long-awaited right turn for Arsene and a glorious home win against Liverpool! Imagine! All you’ve got to do before heading off is tie up a few loose ends and, oh… what’s this? It’s 2.20pm and a new New Noise podcast has arrived.

Enjoy the rest of your Friday, and make sure you don’t spend your entire night editing, only to forget to back up your work. You might lose the lot and then have to start all over again tomorrow. That really would be irritating, you might even end up missing Danny Baker on the radio.

Now in its fifth year celebrated annual music festival Field Day returns to London’s Victoria Park this Saturday with its largest, most eclectic bill yet. On this week’s New Noise Podcast I spend an hour in the company of event organiser Tom Baker, during which I look to find out a bit more about the man himself – his background, passions and personal music taste - and also ponder what on earth might drive a person to get involved in setting up such a musically bold music festival in the middle of the capital.

Holidays are brilliant. Except for the fact that you usually find yourself with twice as much stuff to squeeze in before you finally get to sod off to wherever it is you’re going.   

And so I find myself sat watching a slow upload bar edge across the screen at 2.04am Thursday night. I had planned to head off at around 8am Friday morning.   

Before I go just a quick mention that I'm on BBC 6 Music next week – covering Tom Ravenscroft on two July Fridays: 22nd and 29th, more details about which can be heard in this podcast. I also wrote my first new New Noise Live column for Clash Magazine this week which should appear in the next issue, out soon.

New Noise - 08.07.11

Ok, so I’m not exactly finishing Friday inwardly stricken with the knowledge that 99.9% of the British population believe me to be the indestructible epitome of modern moral bankruptcy, but still, I've had a long ol’ week.

Since we last spoke I’ve been to quite a few gigs. About nine live ‘experiences’ in all. And somewhat helpfully - for a knackered, cold-ridden sloth the wrong side of 30 – it felt like the giddy, gaudy essence of tribal teen spirit teased me at every turn. From the anarchic ADD menace of the OFWGKTA circus to a gladdening resurgence of explosive razor sharp guitar pop courtesy of Evans The Death, I. Felt. Old. At one point an audacious grinning little foetus quite blatantly and unapologetically took the piss out of me for ordering a water at the bar. Before I had the chance to explain myself he’d bounded off like a demented Relentless-injected kitten. I contemplated leaving this callous gig game for good.

Age concern aside, this week’s NN has also taken about three times as long to edit together because I’ve been forced to use a different bit of software. Horrifically boring but true, and more than a bit bothersome for a tired, grumpy old gimmer like me.

Ultimately, it’s now Friday night. I’m running behind by approximately 24 hours, and I dribble out this blurb whilst sat on the sofa with a cup of Lemsip and half a Dairy Milk. Man, it feels good. Hopefully you’ll feel the same when you hear what’s lurking in this week’s tardy but fresh collection of life affirming, ageless new music.

Thanks to any listeners or subscribers who’ve newly chanced upon this podcast via last week’s Sub Pop special. Hopefully you’ll not be put off by the fact that someone as erudite, funny and interesting as Megan Jasper isn’t here every week. New Noise - 23.06.11

There seems to be an air of menace about this week’s New Noise podcast. I’m not entirely sure why. From the off we sink into the other-worldly swirl of Planningtorock’s astounding rework of Creep’s ‘You’, and from there the clouds never really manage to part.

  Once The Twerps are done sticking their own twist on garage rock, we’re knee deep in dark disco with Guy Andrews, gasping for air in the thick funk of Hot Head Show, and downright petrified of the outrageously exciting Black Flag-sampling Death Grips.  

Even Little Eva’s pop classic ‘The Locomotion’ is given it’s own sinister chug thanks to U.S Girls, The British Public are all riffs and wry eyebrows, while Gala Drop at least try to tease out the sun with their textured Portugese patterns. By the time Thousands prettily ponder sewn up mouths and the onset of rain and age in their enchanting ‘Everything Turned Upside Down’, it feels like we’ve literally reached the end. Thank God then for the song’s climactic mantra, ‘See the sun go on and on’, which finally provides us with that lingering, hopeful hug we’ve so desperately craved.   

Those in need of a further pick-me-up should hang in there. Today I recorded another special edition New Noise podcast. It includes stunning music, inspiring tales of rock and roll legend, fantastically bad language and lots of laughter. See you in a week.

With Toronto’s NXNE Music and Film Festival taking place this week, along with the announcement of this year’s Polaris Prize longlist earlier tonight, I suppose this New Noise was always destined to include a sizeable chunk of Canadian goodness. Accordingly Pat Jordache and Volcano Playground make for an exceptional pair of musical bookends.   

Elsewhere, absorb intense electronic pleasure by virtue of Holy Other, Tropics and Samaritan, allow the cold-handed massage of Soft Metals to ice your stifled blood, and be bundled into a boot (or trunk) for a euphoric freeway joyride with The War On Drugs.

New Noise - 10.06.11

Late last Sunday night, with a crackle, a hiss, and the unmistakable opening plucks of Pavement’s Stereo, the Domino Radio soundsytem whirred into action.

And what a week it’s been. Wall to wall incredible music - new, old, weird, wonderful and, in some cases, exclusive. Most of all different. Just today I’ve been awed by the Alex Chilton-inspired show by About Group, a fifth and final breakfast show with a difference from James Endeacott, the concluding selection of sublime future music courtesy of Jack Shankly’s Liquid Lunch and a guest spot from Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood, which kicked off with Thomas Mapfumo and ended with Four Tet, by way of J Dilla and Ween.

There are still two full days to go, and once it’s finished the whole lot - all 168 or so hours - will be available to hear on listen again for at least a month. See it as a challenge.

I too was fortunate enough to be invited on to present a two hour New Noise, on Tuesday lunchtime, a 10 song portion of which comprises this week’s podcast.

I’ve been struggling to work out what to write here for a couple of minutes now.

Regrettably my train of thought has been comprehensively derailed by a slow, creeping nausea, brought on by inadvertent exposure to ‘The Lazy Song’ by Bruno Mars, which is currently being piped into the canteen I am in. It truly is a lyrical marvel.  

Today I don't feel like doing anything
I just wanna lay in my bed
Don't feel like pickin' up my phone
So leave a message at the tone
'Cause today I swear I'm not doin' anythin'
I'm gonna kick my feet up

Then stare at the fan
Turn the tv on
Throw my hand in my pants

Yes, that really is Bruno loudly and very proudly declaring his private right to go knuckle to knacker. Screw you, Mummy Mars! But the line that truly jolts my core is that which documents his audacious and resolute determination to escape the pressures of modern life by retreating to his room to ‘stare at the fan’.

  I think this song is a cry for help. Bruno is lost. Somebody needs to help Bruno. I’m scared for Bruno.  

Anyway, after last week’s marginally heavier foray into the Pink Mist universe the first New Noise of June gets back to the simple business of plucking and placing ten incongruent songs in a row, spanning a mere 45 minutes. Among the nuggets, something brand new from 19 year old Londoner Slime and a cut from the upcoming Battles album, featuring the vocal talents of one Gary Numan.

Lyrical references to the meditative merits of household appliances are few and far between.

  Along with individual interviews with each label boss - exploring the history, ethos and practicalities of running their own staunchly independent imprint - the three Pink Mist founders discuss all manner of topics, including the origins and ideology of the new project, plus secret meetings, embarrassing musical histories, looking after legends on the road, tackling a bloated modern music industry head on and the notion of being DIY, but as part of a group.

Contending with a gargantuan ATP comedown and a busy week in super humid London was never going to be easy, and thus this week’s New Noise trundles home like a wayward adolescent, out long past their bedtime.   

Pretty much all usual avenues of discovery seemed a bit flat and barren this week, (probably down to me more than them), which makes this 50 minute trek through the ten I liked the most just a little bit sweeter. Right now, to my retuned, normal ears, they sound bloody incredible.

Along with the songs, I also shout about a couple of highly exciting music events taking place this weekend in both London and New York. Events driven by the notion of music that challenges the norm and refuses to exist in the background.

Michael Azerrad. Indie label bosses everywhere. I salute you.

Tomorrow (or later today, even) I’m off to Minehead for the last ever Spring ATP Festival, this time curated by Animal Collective. In anticipation of that find in this week’s New Noise a couple of the artists I’m hoping to see, among them Ear Pwr and Zomby, whose excellent ‘Natalia’s Song’ is finally coming out officially as a limited 10” on 4AD on Monday.

New Noise - 05.05.11

Just got back from seeing PS I Love You play at the Lexington in front of an audience of around 50 people, tops. But what a lucky 50 we were.

Audacious axework, incredible songs and a very fine line in sweatbands. Between us, a friend and I made off with two 12”s, one 7” and a t-shirt (and only that was because they’d run out of mediums meaning we couldn’t have one each). Further illustrating our gleeful reaction to the show we were even compelled to ask somewhat bashful frontman Paul Saulnier to sign our plastic at the merch stall. Thrillingly he obliged, though it should be noted his indelible, scant ‘P/S’ does look like someone’s scrawled ‘PIS’ on the label.

What a band. Of course ‘Facelove’ appeared on last week’s New Noise, I only hope I get to enjoy witnessing one of the tracks from this week’s podcast performed live at some stage in the next few weeks.

Anyway, sorry for the garbled words, it’s late, I’m hungry, and I’m buzzing on empty. It’s all I’ve got in my brain. Hope you find something you like, and cheers for listening.

After last week’s foray into Captured territory this week’s New Noise podcast returns to a familiar format, namely 10 (or 11) slices of confrontational, divergent magnificence, unwillingly bundled together and forced to try and make the best of it. Not unlike Manchester City. Only with considerably less cash and sulk.

Within! Heavenly instrumental jams courtesy of Old King, Gyratory System and Three Trapped Tigers, who burst in with a knockout first airing of a track from their long awaited debut album. That’s alongside a few roasted gems made to stare at the sun to, courtesy of All Tiny Creatures, Sun Glitters and Sepalcure (messing excellently with School of Seven Bells), plus Californian majesty from Young Hunting.

Bang in some dynamite bars from obscenely talented 18 year old Lewis and two guitar pop belters from either end of this fine island - in the shape of Bos Angeles and Copy Haho - and you’ll be 50 minutes closer to the end of the day.

This week’s edition also marks the return of weekly service. Having dabbled (badly) with being a 10 day affair, I’ve decided that Thursday’s are now the new New Noise day. Until Thursday, then.

Some of the songs on this week’s New Noise suit the Spring sun more than others, particularly those from Dream Hits, Idiot Glee and London Elektricity. Fortunately, for those who run from hot daylight faster than you can say ‘ginger goth’, there’s a healthy bit of contemplative darkness and angst in there too from Timber Timbre, D. Paris and Elliot Whale Boy.

Also, I forgot to mention this week, the next podcast, (due next week), is going to be a little bit different. Just a one off.

Late again. Does it matter? Probably not.

I consider the opening song of each New Noise podcast to be of vital importance and use a song's 'opener potential' as a bit of a barometer to work out if I like something enough to include it. If I don't think it'll work up front, it probably shouldn't go in.

This week, for whatever fussy reason, I struggled for openers. The search for sufficient material took far longer than usual, and thus partly explains this delayed arrival.

The plus side is that I'm stupidly excited about each and every one of the beautiful little nuggets I eventually found.

And the opener? Jeez, WHAT an opener.

On the whole I find Christmas a bit of a drag when it comes to music. I think working in various retail outlets in the past has withered my enthusiasm for festive songs to such an extent that I instinctively and irrationally baulk at anything with a sleigh bell on it (except for Sleigh Bells). And this endless End of Year List attack is getting to me too.

Silly moaning aside, such lists at least provide us with an opportunity to flag up things we may have missed. The twisted rhythms of Altered Native's excellent album 'Tenement Yard Volume 1' helped it land at number Nine in FACT magazine's excellent list, and I've included its closing track on this week's New Noise.

Other than that (nearly) everything on the new podcast is fresh and new, (at least to my ears), and might hopefully provide 50 minutes or so of festive respite.

Contained within the metaphorical walls of this week's audio excursion are Snow White samples, defunct Scottish hardcore, one of the most talked about hip hop productions of the moment, a pregnant pause, a couple of brilliant demos, a fair helping of actual noise and a warm, looping pop gem.

This week's wholly free collection of New Noisettes include an Andy Votel-produced Gruff Rhys gem, a brand new single from The Neat, a dynamite demo from Leicester's We Three and the Death Rattle and a dreamy debut from Evan Voytas, which is easy listening in the best possible fashion. That's alongside experimental Aussie duo Lazy Dre, a very welcome free download from Kurt Vile, a 1981 underground synth-pop gem from RUTH, a highlight from Suuns recent debut album and a couple of lovely folk pop numbers from Shugo Tokumaru's upcoming fourth record.

Also included, a new single from satisfyingly frenetic Leeds lot Pulled Apart by Horses. The band make the cut for two reasons: 1 - I love them like Rooney loves checking his balance, and 2 - I want to shout about a live radio session the band are doing this Friday from 7pm, on BBC 6 Music. With me as host. Tom Robinson is on holiday and I've been asked to cover him, meaning I'll also get to play lots of songs I like live on the radio for a couple of hours.

If you can't get hold of me between now and Friday it'll be because I'm in a small room with a record player trying to work out what I should play first.

Let's Wrestle are one of my favourites. Thus receiving news of their brand new single was akin to being invited to watch the rest of season four of Mad Men in one sitting, joined on comfortable sofa by Christina Hendricks and a limitless supply of tea and toasted cheese and ham sandwiches. I was pleased.

Crushing Nerves is the sound of LW at their awkward adolescent best and a tantalising glimpse at the kind of thing they may or may not have been recently recorded in Steve Albini's Illinois studio (speaking of whom, this GQ interview in which he discusses the 'death of radio' is worth a look if you haven't already). Thanks to Stephen at Tough Love for letting me include it on this week's New Noise.

Also on the new podcast the truly inspired Gun Fun from Warmest Chord's Slow Talk, a first play of a b-side by Seattle's Seapony, a whacked out belter from the new Teeth of the Sea album and the first taste of Darkstar's greatly anticipated debut album North. I also pluck some Randomer from the new Soul Jazz Future Bass compilation, pick a favourite from the Islet EP which is out this week and get to play the brand (brand brand) new Berlin inspired beauty from SEAMS - Hung Markets - which is available as a free download from his Bandcamp as of right now.

It all follows something oddly wonderful, and forty years old, from Les Maledictus Sound.

Finally, in this - the first New Noise podcast of October 2010 - I get to whack out something from the sublime, free-to-download new White Denim album. (Never mind that I spent the days following the recording fretting over whether I picked the wrong one, just download it now and get lost in the lot). It'll be interesting to see how it compares to their official new album due out in a few months. Have they casually tossed away a gem? I'd love to know the politics and motive for the decision.

Aside from the heroic Austin three-piece, I've included spliced and sampled briliance from Sweden's En Björnen, another drawn out dream from Diskjokke who's rejigged Crystal Fighters to great effect, and a beautiful, twinkling treat from Glasgow's Remember Remember.

Since 2006 Jon Hillcock's New Noise new music radio programme has evolved from a podcast into a radio show (on Xfm and NME Radio), to a mailout, and now into a fully downloadable free weekly pod/cloud/sound/music/noise-cast.

This week's blast of New Noise kicks off with an eight minute avalanche of snaps n' samples courtesy of Pretty Lights; primarily the work of Colorado native Derek Vincent Smith.

Thereafter Everything Everything's fizzing skew-pop wonder 'QWERTY Finger' marks today's release of their peerless debut album, the sinister monotony of Italy's Husband lends things a touch of menace, and Chris Ward, aka Tropics, brings us back in from the cold with his woozy lead EP track 'Give It Up'.

The lovely warm chug of Colorado's The Skeletones Four heralds the return of guitars, (along with parps and plonks of sporadic horns and piano), before a demo of Captured Tracks upcoming single release 'Party Talk' from Craft Spells, and Oberhofer's impossible-to-reference-without-sounding-like-a-tit ‘o0O0o0O0o’, which you'll most definitely be humming subconsciously for the rest of the week.

Finally, ahead of the gentle enchantment of Londoner Keaton Henson and New York's Holy Spirits, listen carefully for the static and crackle of the superb Simon Bookish remix of Late of the Pier's 'Blueberry', played directly from the of the aa-side 12" Remix LP. It's a total winner (though it really doesn't make the wait for a second LOTP LP any easier).
