Particularly some of the simpler looks of the '20s. And not so much the flapper or evening gowns as much as the simple cotton day dresses and plain jane frocks with bits of ruffles or embroidery at the collars. Well, I'm sure I'll do a post on it some time. At the moment I'm a little sick (again!) and non-coherent, so I'll just stop rambling and leave you with the photos . . .

Silent Sunday favorites Dolores Costello and Madge Bellamy.

Marion Davies . . . . Enid Bennett.

Bessie Love (I think) and William Haines (who I need to do a post on one day!) . . . The best thing I found by far was this little goldish-yellow jacket . . . Supposedly it had belonged to an actress in the '60s; her daughters were in charge of the estate sale and--in terrific New York accents--kept trying to get me to buy a similar green coat instead, saying that it was in much better shape, but I only had eyes for the yellow one. And of course when I got it home I saw that they were right--it needs a good drycleaning and the hem's completely undone.

I really don't mind paying a little extra to have it freshened up though because I think it might be the '60s jacket I've been looking for. My love of yellow coats started up almost three years ago when I found a little Aquascutum coat at the thrift store. I wore that thing as much as you can get away with wearing a yellow coat . . . it may have been bright, but back then I was into much brighter things than I am now, and whenever people made jokes about how they could see me coming from blocks away I just fake-laughed them off. And then when my style started to gravitate towards more subtle colors and less graphic shapes I put the coat in the back of my closet and forgot about it.

The Aquascutum thrift store find . . . . . Trying on a Milly coat in the dance club mall . . . . . Elizabeth Hooks in an old issue of Lucky.

But then last year some time I saw the most amazing goldenrod-y yellow '60s coat worn by an Anthropologie fashion merchandiser in Lucky Magazine, and it sent me on a hunt for a new version of a '60s yellow coat. I ended up selling the Aquascutum coat, but never found a replacement 'till today. The new one is a bit more subtle in color than the more mod one that I sold, but I think that the best thing about it is its shape--smaller and more fitted, with a daintier (I kind of hate that word, but it fits!) collar and sleeves, and then little rhinestone covered buttons that are sort of old lady-ish, but maybe in a good way. And then the length is absolutely perfect, which you really can't tell from the photos since the hem's hanging loose and looking terrible. Actually the whole thing's in pretty bad shape right now, but by Fall I'm going to do my best to have it all dry-cleaned and tailored up and ready to put on my blog. And I'm crossing my fingers that by then my hair will be long again, too--seeing photos with my hair all long and kind of ratty makes me wish I never cut it!

I got the same feeling later on that day when it rained for the first time in weeks . . . it just seemed so fitting.

Anja's the one to blame for June purchase number four, since she sent me the link to a Marion Davies biography on Etsy. Well, really it was nice of her--I'm in the middle of reading the book now and it's put me on an even bigger Marion Davies kick than I was on before. If I had been around in the '20s I would have tried to be her friend for sure!

At the moment I'm obsessed with the Etsy shop Rosebud Cottage and the vintage barrettes it sells, even though my hair's still at a weird in-between stage that makes me look extra funny when I wear any sort of barrette or headband. But when I saw this little pale yellow rhinestone barrette from the '40s I just had to buy it.

And you've already seen these sandals in two of my outfit posts, and I guess it's safe to say that you'll be seeing a lot more of them since I've been wearing them about every day. I just love them; they're the '70s ankle strapped sandals I've been on the hunt for for months, and the 2 inch heel makes them just right for weird summer adventures. But really I'm just waiting 'till Fall when I can wear them with a pair of black tights. I don't think I've ever been so excited for cool weather in my life!

Most of our time there was spent at my grandparents' house for their annual 4th of July party, but I did get to spend some time with my mom and sister Lauren, talking about Scarlet and Michael Jackson (I think they're pals in Heaven, because Scarlet was so much cuter than Bubbles!) and relaxing while Drew and my dad went on long bike rides in the countryside.

On Saturday two of my college friends came to the party, so it was nice to be able to joke around a lot and get my mind off of sadder things. It was a blast--there was lots of food (all the men on my dad's side of the family are obsessed with cooking, and Lauren's husband Neil is a cooking star, too) and wine (rum and coke for less fancy people like me) and fireworks, which I don't like much either, so I was a little relieved when they got rained out.

On Sunday it didn't start raining 'till later, so we drove out in the country with Drew so he could take some quick blog photos. I thought the old Laura Ashley dress I brought to wear was cute 'till I saw the little blue gingham dress that Lauren had found at a local thrift store. If it hadn't been made for tiny-waisted girls like Lauren I think I might have stolen it.

These photos also mark the debut blog appearance of my new denim purse. The lovely Tara at SWANclothing must have known that I was getting bored of the 2 or 3 purses I carry around on a regular basis, because she offered to send me one of her new Tiny Rose purses, which I'd been eyeing. I think I've used mine about every single day since it came in the mail--small cross-body bags are just perfect for summertime anyway, but this one is especially nice and light. The denim fabric gives an edge to my a lot of times too cutesy outfits in the same way that a denim jacket does--I was actually tempted to wear a jean jacket with this dress, but it would have been way too hot and I would have gotten teased, and, besides, the Tiny Rose really gives the dress the same sort of feeling.

After we took these pictures I realized I didn't get any sorts of close-ups of the purse, but I'm sure it will be making plenty of blog appearances from now on so I'll be able to get some soon.

on Etsy

Oh dear . . . after writing yesterday's post about how much better I was feeling I suddenly got a bad case of Scarlet-blues again. It's strange how it comes and goes . . . Last night I was back to crying again, and while I didn't cry today I did feel pretty detached and strange. Also I didn't do a bit of work. I figured I was going to take the week off of listing, but I think I might list just a few things tomorrow after all--they are extra good things, too!

I did feel better once I got out of my apartment and went to visit Drew for dinner at Whole Foods and a trip to Borders. And dressing in cheery colors even helped . . . sort of. I'm not usually drawn to pink, so I'm not really sure why I've been buying so many things in girly colors lately; I found this little cardigan at the thrift store on Monday, got a mauve-ish skirt at Anthropologie on Saturday, and then yesterday found a little pink '50s blouse at a vintage store in Athens. But then I think it may be those hand-colored '20s photos and silent film star postcards that keep seeping into my head, making me want to dress in the extra girly and romantic colors that I've been trying to avoid over the last few months. I don't know what else it could be, but I guess it's ok 'till Fall comes along.

Rex. albums for her I was sure that she loved them!

When I went away to college I didn't get to see her nearly as much, but I always worried about her, and every time my mom called sounding the least bit sad I'd get terrified that something had happened to Scarlet. Well, when I got the call yesterday I knew that the time had finally come, and it was true . . . Just a little while later my mom called to tell me that Scarlet was gone, and we both cried and cried. I still can't get through a couple of hours without crying. I'm pretty much useless right now, so there won't be any outfit posts this week, though I'll do my best to keep up regular posts, even though I don't know how terrific they'll be. My mind's really somewhere else, I guess.

came in the mail the other day and it reminded me that I did a list for them of the 12 (vintage-related) things that I love about spring. Now, it was written about a month or so ago when nice spring coolness was pretty much on its way out here in Atlanta, so I was really putting together the list with summertime in mind.

1. Spotting wild lizards at Georgia flea markets!

9. Hunting down the perfect '50s bathing suit.

10. Wearing over-the-top pretty dresses for plantation sight-seeing.

11. Springtime reading.

12. Saturday morning coffee and estate sale adventures.

At the time I was still actually excited about the idea of dressing for summer; I guess I forgot how the humidity likes to frizz up my hair and how boring the simple sun dress and sandals outfits can get, and how those '50s bathing suits of my dreams never do end up fitting me right.

But then again how could I get sick of things like summer day trips and iced coffee (double shots on ice from Starbucks!) and lizard-hunting? And for all my complaining I really don't even mind summer clothes so much . . . I still do like the ginghams and floral prints from the list, only instead of being inspired by 1940s photos at the moment I'm sort of knee-deep into old '20s photos and anything Gatsby garden-party.

Garden at the Robert Mills House . . .

. . . . . . Anita Page

I really would love to know more about her. Of course I'm nerdily fascinated by any woman who played a big part behind the scenes of the '20s studio system, but then again I'm equally fascinated by her photographs. They just seem so different than the ultra-glamorous, glossed-up portraits Hollywood was churning out at the time --they seem more personal. Less perfect, but more interesting to me--I especially love the photographs of screen goddesses like Joan Crawford and Anita Page looking a bit goofy and somehow more real. And the portrait of Mary Nolan with a cigarette in hand looks nothing like the glamorous George Hurrell (one of Louise's successors) photos of smoking starlets that would come about in just a few years . . . Mary looks more tough than glamorous, and her sort of raggedy clothes and half-sad look makes me want to imagine up a story about her.

Leila Hyams Maybe watching girls walking about the city in wonderful thick coats and wintery clothes isn't the greatest thing to be watching for someone who's already tired of summer, but there's plenty of warm weather inspiration to be found too. My favorite part is when the girls change into little 1930s-ish shorts and white dresses and start tap dancing. Maybe mostly because it's nice to see that I'm not the only one out there who gets weird urges to tap dance after having a little too much to drink. But then again I don't look one-half as cute as they do . . . They are the sorts of girls who look perfectly put-together and accessorized and are probably neat and organized to boot. They probably don't go around letting debit cards drop out of their messy, old receipt-stuffed purses. But seriously, the clothes are about too good to be true, and now I've suddenly got silk tap pants, simple-but-pretty dresses, and small suitcase-style purses on my ever-growing wishlist.

LEWIS Fall 2009 Collection from LEWIS on Vimeo.

I just like the idea of wearing something that's a bit simple and loose, and just rolling up the sleeves. At the moment I like this sort of thing better than the little floral dresses I have in my closet, but then again I'm so fickle . . . And really not one to talk, considering that the last dress I ordered may be be the frilliest one my closet has seen yet.

The summer heat! I don't know what they did in those days before air conditioning or even fans. Especially those poor women in all of their Victorian and Edwardian layers of clothes. I'm such a baby that I even wore shorts, and I never wear shorts! I think I have the same sort of shorts-phobia that Casey has, because I haven't worn a pair for years and years, unless you count shorts-with-tights as shorts-wearing, but I don't think it's really the same. I guess that the Georgia summer heat is finally wearing away my resistance, because when I found a pair of shorts at the thrift store that actually fit I had to give in. They sort of make me feel like Ruby Keeler in a Busby Berkeley film, or at least Ruby's clumsy older sister who can't tap dance for the life of her but doesn't let that stop her from trying.
