In 1980 it was edgy to write your own vows.

Today, the pictures are faded, fashion has moved forward and time has left its mark on us all. These words – typed from an IBM Selectric Typewriter on simple white paper with ceremony instructions penned in the margins – were our proclamation to the world around us and the world unseen.

On our 32nd anniversary I dug out our wedding album. Turning the faded, brittle pages I found what I was looking for – the vows – glued in place. Revisiting them feels like returning to your grandmother’s house once you’re grown. These familiar words seemed larger at the time. I flipped a page looking for the rest.

Our vows were simple and to the point. Adequate. Strong on substance and short on eloquence.

If we had a redo, our words would be detailed and deep – describing how we would face every challenge ahead with undaunted courage. We’re more cautious now and know what it takes to build a marriage and life together. But two 20-yr-olds could only look ahead. Our future looked bright and pretty simple as we declared ~

I, Tim/Debi, following the guidance of my Lord, Jesus Christ, take you, Tim/Debi, to be my mate, my closest friend and my spiritual partner. I will pray for eyes to see your needs and ears to hear your spirit gently plea, as I give myself to build you up. So you and I will be as one, no longer to face trials apart from one another but to press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called us – Heavenward in Christ Jesus.

We wrote these words while on a picnic one Sunday afternoon early in our engagement. They seemed enough at the time. Enough to state our commitment and reliance. After the ceremony, my mom teased me about leaving out the words, ‘obey’, ’sickness and health’, and the big ones - ’man and wife’.

All these years later, with 19 immediate family members and counting, we begin our next 32 years together. May we never loose the simplicity of these words and the call to action they evoke. And may we remain forever ‘edgy’.

What were your wedding vows like? I’d love to hear.

A mom ‘worth her salt’ does not fall for cultural norms or compare her value to media hype. Her worth is ‘above rubies’.

A mom worth her salt -

is free to celebrate Easter without making a single craft!

lets her husband ‘wrestle’ with his children

accepts dirt as part of God’s creation

separates propaganda from toys – introducing her children to toys that stimulate learning rather than encourage entertainment

enjoys the sound of silence and teaches her family to do likewise

renews her mind with the word of God – daily!

requires her children to get along with one another

accepts life’s limitations as part of God’s plan – while praying for the unthinkable

resists the fleshly temptation to prefer one child above another

‘pleads the call of the needy’ (Prov 31:9)

loves the father of her children in open display – doing him ‘good and not evil, all the days of her life’. (Prov 31:12)

smiles at the future -

‘You are the salt of the earth’ (Matthew 5:13) preserving the culture of your home while penetrating a world around you. Every little sprinkling of your life makes a lasting difference in the hearts of your children and those whose lives they will touch. Motherhood is being redefined in our day. If I do anything in my life to pass on the heritage and privilege of mothering – it will be to debunk the lies of culture and release the truths of scripture to those who are hungry.

Let us be women who won’t settle for a normal, safe life – but ‘press on to the high calling of Christ’. (Phil 3:14)

Recently, I had a lovely visit with Courtney from Women Living Well. We attended The Mom Heart Conference here in DFW along with 800 other women! I nabbed Courtney to ask her opinion on relating to younger moms – who have such different circumstances than my generation – but the same heart and values. She gave me some ‘Courtney’ advice. “Be real, be honest, be direct.”

To be honest – I’ve been in a perfectionist stronghold regarding writing … I’ve got to break out of this mode and stop blaming my lack of blogging on my circumstances. BTW, I am busier than ever before with college prep, teen life, speech and debate, a new puppy and ‘a family that likes to eat and wear clean clothes.’ (to quote Sally Clarkson)

I LOVE my messy, busy life! Every sleepy, soggy moment of it! I asked for this job and I am living my dream – however bumpy this ride may be – I’m in it for the long-haul with every ounce of energy God gives me.

Sometimes it seems surreal – this life that I’ve dreamed of – is really happening!

Today is Ash Wednesday - the beginning of Lent. I’m not Catholic – but I appreciate the pomp and slender believers, throughout history, have brought to this season of remembrance. I woke-up this morning with a desire to tell my story – OK Courtney - I’m doing it. Being an introvert my design, blogging is a two-edged sword for me. I’d rather be a cheerleader on the sidelines – cheering others on – than opening my life up for observation. (you introverts understand)

I have some stories to tell. Stories of God’s faithfulness in the midst of personal struggle.

The spiritual discipline I’m asking the Lord to work in me through this season of Lent is absorbing the Word of God. I want to appreciate the Scriptures in a fresh, new way. The Biblical mandate to ‘remember’ is multifaceted. When I grab my old Bible – it becomes a ‘yearbook’ through seasons of my life, so far. I go back in time when I see the scribbles in the corner – the notes to myself. I remember. And in remembering – I believe. I believe the Lord of yesterday is the Lord of today and even tomorrow.

Welcome to my slide-show.

When our family was small and Tim worked a day job, homeschooling was new, days were long and life hadn’t ‘landed’ for us. We moved 6 years in a row. Graduate school was over – now what? No one knew. We had our 3 children – what now? Life was on hold. Our dreams were not being lived out – or were they? My husband struggled for purpose, we all struggled to make ends meet. He wanted to stop having children. I asked for some time to think this through. Everything felt so temporary and I longed to grow roots, to build a lasting legacy to leave fruit that would remain, for the purposes of Christ. There had to be more.

In a Bible study we were challenged by an ‘older woman’ to pray God’s word over our husbands. This approach to prayer would help redirect my will to the Father’s and accomplish the purposes of heaven. So, my personal discomfort would not overshadow the eternal purposes of God. I still have that Bible, next to my bed – these words underlined in red.

Psalm 128

Blessed {is the man} who fears the Lord, who walks in his ways.

You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within you house; your sons will be like olive shoots around your table. Thus is the man blessed who fears the Lord. May the Lord bless you from Zion all the days of your life; may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem, and may you live to see your children’s children.

I prayed these words out loud when he was gone – wrote them on cards kept in my bedside table and prayed them over him at night and began to believe this was God’s will for our family. I still pray this scripture, as a wife, today. The Lord is faithful to his word and guides the heart of man. If I could have seen those days from the perspective of ‘now’ – what a difference my confidence would have been. The Lord really answers prayer. For, my husband is characterized by every word of this scripture in every way.

This new work has rocked our home. Kari Jobe is a fresh voice in harmony with ageless truth. I’ve got to share this with someone I love. That would be YOU! The inertia behind this lovely work is so refreshing in our age of cookie-cutter gospel recordings.

I think Kari has delivered a fresh, pop sound with words birthed in the secret place wrapped-up in a symphony. So pleasant to the heart, soul and ears! Our younger boys especially enjoy ‘We are’ {the light of the world}.

So here’s the deal – I’m giving away her ‘Where I Find You’ album. Which was the #1 download on iTunes upon arrival!! When you hear it you’ll know why. Kari’s a hometown girl from DFW and God has graced her with the opportunity to be His voice to our hearts – in the car, on the laptop, in the living room …

This giveaway will end on Feb. 13th (Tuesday) Winner (chosen by Random Generator) will be announced on Valentine’s Day! {sharin’ the love}

Today is Tuesday and I continue with my Taking Care Tuesday series.

Motherhood 101 - ‘If you save your life, you loose it – but if you loose your life, for My sake – you find it.’ The words of Christ. (Luke 17:33)

In short - ‘She who refreshes others – will herself be refreshed.’ (Proverbs 11:35)

I’d love to hear your ideas on refreshing the members of your family.

The simple things make all the difference; like a fresh candle burning, dinner on the stove, a fire in the fireplace, your favorite perfume and flowers on the front porch. Refreshing goes much deeper with; listening face-to-face, stopping to acknowledge the value of the child speaking, being available for conversation – as you drive or sharing meals together. Refreshing goes deepest in; a mother’s prayers, standing on God’s promises through hard times, speaking God’s word over our children, believing in their dreams and getting to know them as individuals rather than extensions of ourselves.

Refreshing brings a heart connection between others and ourselves. The definition of refresh is: Give new strength or energy to; reinvigorate. For the giver - in the fashion of sowing and reaping – we ourselves emerge refreshed.

In a world that’s grown cold and indifferent – let us bring freshness to everyday life – right here at home.

There’s so much more to say. Please leave a comment or a link and tell us your ideas.

One less – bell to answer. One less – egg to fry. One less man – to pick-up after. I should be happy … but all I do is cry …

Over the past week the words to this 70′s Marilyn McCoo song kept playing, over and over in my mind. There’s one less of us in this busy house. Why should this bother me?

Because I keep seeing this chubby little boy run through the house with a cowboy hat on, toting a rifle (that outweighs him) and a smile that will melt anyone’s heart. Flashbacks – they appear like a mirage at the strangest times. I remember driving home from the hospital and watching him in the car-seat – the wonder of knowing this little man, so handsome, so earnest and precious to us all. In case you’re wondering, I don’t have my tenses mixed up. I’m just able to relive the past like it’s present day life – I’m a mom.

Our son, Levi moved out today. He’s finishing up college at the university. This has been a long-time-coming and he’s ready to pursue his dreams at The Meadows School of Art. He’s been working for a couple of years in anticipation. The Lord has given him so much favor and clear direction. It’s all good. Tim and I are so pleased with him. Our hearts are full.

He was loading the truck with all of his earthly possessions – one trip did it. We held the morning long. Tim made his famous homemade biscuit breakfast for us all. I brewed some strong coffee to savor together. One last trip – I ran to Kroger to get Levi living supplies that guys just don’t keep on hand. He eats oatmeal for breakfast (his roommates will laugh), I snagged his favorite coffee, some toothpaste for when he runs out, canned soup – the good kind and essentials that he doesn’t know are essential – yet. Just about to check-out, I was taking stock of my loaded cart when I paused … a familiar sound. The words came out of my mouth in tune with the grocery store piped-in music. It wasn’t Marilyn McCoo – but a new, modern version of the old, familiar song One Less Bell to Answer . Time stood still. I just stood there in the middle of the isle until the song was over.

There has never been a young man that is more loved. Even in a big family or especially in a big family – everyone matters. No one wants his room – yet. On the way home from church, to break the silence, Joel suggested we use all the money we’ll be saving on groceries to take the family out for dinner – to his favorite burger spot, of course. We all smiled.

The next time someone asks me, ‘how many kids do you have left at home?’ – I’ll just say … ‘one less’.

Confession – Take Care Tuesday is late because … I had a conflict. A prearranged hair appointment at my favorite salon!

A girl’s got to keep her priorities straight! Right?

It amazes me how much better I feel when my hair is ‘done’.

When our first child was born, my first outing alone was to the hair salon. Some changes just had to be made.

When our kids were little and Tim was in grad school – money was scarce. I made a decision to make my hair a priority. It’s a woman’s glory – right? I knew I could wear the same clothes over and over as long I had ‘good hair’! I’ve never regretted this priority.

My little great grandma kept her hair wound-up in a bun with jeweled pins. As a little girl, watching her tousle it down and comb through with an ivory comb, I made myself a promise, to wear my hair ‘up’ someday when I got to be ‘old’. I’m still holding onto that image. I see myself, someday, as an elderly woman with my hair … twisted-up in a classy masterpiece upon my little old head. Glory!

Meanwhile, during these middle years, I spend precious time on Pinterest and YouTube learning what to do with my ever changing hair. I admit, it’s fun. I’ve always liked ‘fixing’ hair.

Today, after getting a fresh cut and a splash of color – I feel better already!! Forgive me for being late?

I’d love to hear YOUR hair ideas, or any ideas for taking care!

Please link into Taking Care Tuesday with your blog, Facebook, or Pinterest and share your own ideas. The link will go until tomorrow to make up for lost time.

It’s Tuesday! I’m officially starting my weekly series on Taking Care of Momma. I’m calling it, Take Care Tuesday!

As moms, we’re so busy taking care of our families that we often overlook the need to care for ourselves. We’ve all been guilty. A little homegrown pampering will do us all good. I started the series in the summer and got so much input from readers – I had to keep this going.

We can all benefit from a little more care and attention. And, as we do, our daughters are watching us and learning to care for themselves as well.

Today’s topic is fabric. The most natural we can find – cotton.

So, you don’t have to go to the spa (although I have nothing against that) and we all can reassess our personal care by looking around us and noticing the fabrics that touch our bodies on a daily basis. I personally recommend, cotton and here’s the reason why.

We live in Texas, where cotton farming is prolific. If you meet a bonafide cotton-farmer they WILL have an opinion on their product, I guarantee. And you know what? They’re right!

A little anatomy – our skin needs to breathe 24 hours a day. This is the primary way we detox. When we utilize our body’s natural means of detoxification through our skin, this gives our major organs a break. The liver, kidneys and lungs don’t have to work as hard. If this isn’t reason enough to convince you, here’s some more.

Cotton ‘breathes’ with our body and lets the air in, allowing for better circulation. That’s why, in the old days, people wrapped themselves in cotton sheets when taken by fever – the body can sweat out the toxic waste through the cotton – naturally. This natural fabric will draw out the moisture and keep the heat in. During the winter months it’s the best bedding, in moderate temperatures, to keep body-heat intact.

In our house, we sleep on cotton and make sure the bedding is natural – no synthetic fabrics for covers. Our kids sleep in cotton and avoid the chemical laced ‘flame resistant’ fabrics most kids’ pajamas are made of. Cotton is hypoallergenic and dust-mite resistant, which is the best choice of material for people who suffer from asthma or allergies, or those who have sensitive skin prone to irritation. Also, because cotton clothing breathes better, it’s the best choice to keep you cool in hot, humid weather.

Synthetic fabrics may be less expensive and keep their form – but do not compare to natural fabrics. The benefits of cotton are endless. I consider it part of taking care of myself, wearing natural fabrics. Cotton’s just more comfortable than most fabrics and better for you to-boot!

I tuck my kiddos into bed with cotton sheets and covers.

This fabric line-dries in no time, if you have a clothesline. I hang my cotton clothing indoors at times for the air-dried feel.

Wash your face and remove makeup with cotton cosmetic pads.

Cotton towels – aaahhh – big difference! I do prefer ours dried in the dryer – much softer.

Denim is cotton – need I say more? As I type this, I’m wearing my best, old, soft jeans – a winter favorite of mine. I’ll need to replace them someday – but not now.

Please link in and let me know your ideas on taking care of yourself – as a mom. You can link an older post if you like. Visit the other linkers for more ideas and connections.

I will return next week for more ideas and tips. I’m so excited about this connection. Will you join me? I’d love to hear how you take care!

When I make a meal like this one – it’s easy to prioritize dinnertime. The smell draws everyone through the kitchen to peek and the leftovers, are better than the original version.

Here’s a recipe I’ve used for years. Like most of my favorite recipes, this one originally came from a church cookbook. Since I’m a Texan, I’ve tweaked this recipe and added some fresh options for a healthier, hotter version. I’m pleased to pass on this treasure and I hope your family enjoys it as much as we have.

Like any recipe I post – it’s been a hit for the girls and guys, young and old. This is a meal that I serve for company and take to friends in need. Tortilla Soup is easy to cook. I look forward to making this meal, and we all look forward to eating it. This recipe serves a family of 4 – so I multiply it several times over. Enjoy!

Tortilla Soup

2 cups shredded chicken (from whole, natural chicken – save the broth – always!)

1 large yellow onion – chopped fine

2 teaspoons fresh garlic (pressed)

2 tablespoons butter

1 16 oz can stewed tomatoes

1 16 oz can Rotelle tomatoes

1 4 oz can green chilies (fresh is better)

Broth from the whole chicken (3 cups – skim off the fat)

2 cups of beef broth (organic is best)

1 teaspoon chili powder

1 teaspoon cumin

dash of seasalt

Cook the chicken on medium-low. Do not boil – it makes the meat tough. Drain, pull off the bone and chop. Use ALL parts of the chicken for a rich taste. I know it takes some work, but it’s worth it!

Saute’ onion and garlic in butter.

Add all ingredients (except chicken) simmer 30 minutes. Add Chicken and let simmer for 10 minutes with the lid on the pan.

Garnish with sliced avocado, natural tortilla chips and shredded Monterey Jack cheese. (add a plop of sour cream on top for a fancy look)

Serve this with Mexican cornbread, fresh tortillas, or loads loads of tortilla chips and Pioneer Woman’s salsa.

Joining forces with:

I’ve enjoyed a much needed break from blogging and most of social media. This was an abrupt change. I realize there was no notice – no ‘gone fishing’ sign on my door. There’s a reason for that. I didn’t know I needed a break. (imagine?) Tim and I went on a cruise where I was forced to be disconnected. Once I got over the shock – it felt good – reeeaaallly good. I decided to go with it, ride the wave and see where it took me. We landed smack in the middle of the holiday season and I figured it was a good time to slip out – unnoticed.

The break felt so good and was timely in my life on so many levels. When the Lord directs us to slow down it’s just best to cooperate. This always leads to refreshing changes. The ebb and flow of life – God’s artistic design for His masterpiece. Creation.

Now that I’m back – I want to share some ideas I have and my plans for the future of this blog. First of all, I LOVE blogging and have NO intention of stopping. Above & Beyond is a blog I would read – that’s all I ever plan to offer. Giving myself to writing this blog has been a lovely journey for me. But, my life is no more kept and ordered for this mother. The livelihood of our little ones has spilled out into the community and overflowed around us. This is likely the busiest season of my life as a mother – so blogging will ALWAYS take a backseat to my family’s needs. This explains the breech in service. There may be more to follow – but I completely plan to return.

After much soul searching, I’ve come to a happy place in my planning. I want Above & Beyond to be a ‘commercial free zone’. Advertisements will not pop-up. There is and will be NO agenda – other than to encourage moms, like me – who need some strength, perspective and to know they are not alone. I WILL have giveaways! I enjoy this so. Publishers are gracious to offer these and I will only give those items that have enriched my life in hopes of spreading the love. When I find something that works for me, I just have to tell someone, but a salesman – I am not. I couldn’t even sell Girl Scout cookies – that’s another story.

I thank the Lord for Social Media and stay active on Twitter @mother211 and Facebook and Pinterest. Meet me there!

Finally, I will continue my series on Taking Care of Momma. I also want to hear your ideas, so I plan to open a Linky on Tuesdays – starting next week. Take Care Tuesday! So get ready to link up with me. (please!) We all need help taking care of ourselves and our families benefit the most!

If I haven’t returned an email or responded to a comment – please understand. This Christmas season was stellar for our family! My heart is full and I stand amazed at the grace and goodness of our Lord and Savior.

Don’t go away – I’ll be right back. Promise.

I’m home from The Relevant Conference. What a privilege it was to join 250 mom/bloggers in Harrisburg, PA for the 2nd year in a row! I returned with a suitcase full of giveaways, my mind spinning with ideas, and anxious to see my family.

During my flight there I wrote this cool post – it was WAY cool – I fully intended to blog throughout the weekend with pictures and everything. I even brought my camera AND the manual! But, my plans came to an abrupt halt when the hotel Internet refused to comply.

The message from the Lord was more like ‘rest and peace’. Typing slowed and we all settled in, more intent than before. Cool, winter air invaded our comfy hotel as the first snowstorm of the season blew in. Huge snowflakes wove a thick blanket of white – it looked like a scene from White Christmas!

Relevant is such a unique experience. Multifaceted – like a women’s retreat, enrichment classes, getaway for busy moms, friend-connect, plus, opportunities for ministry interests galore. They even had a prayer room and live dinner music from David Nevue - the man behind the music on A Holy Experience. I got to room with Ali – An Ordinary Mom and her precious little one, Faith.

The mom/blog phenomenon is a cross-cultural movement. Relevant draws southern bells, embedded missionaries, those who rescue and those who have been rescued, farm girls, city slickers, and moms like me.

Women who treasure their families and love their God now have a voice through social media. A voice that circles the globe and reaches the heavenlies. Hammering out the cries of their hearts, creative ideas and inspirations – making a collective ‘sound.’ Thanks to the women who’ve put their heart out there like Emily, from Chatting at the Sky , Sarah Markley and Serena Woods from Grace is for Sinners, they have helped pave the way for a groundswell. I was honored to be a part. Next year I hear they’re moving to a larger place to accommodate more – I hope so.

Of these modern day disciples, there is no mold in which to conform. They’re a sliver of Christianity – a mixed drink from diverse streams of living water. Each reattaching her identity to the roots of grace and truth. In a world where ambition reigns – self-promotion is a stranger here.

The accomplished alongside the deer-in-headlights newbie – we all gather for one purpose. To know God and make him known, through Christ alone. Each conveying truth – from their vantage point. Theological differences aside. Solidly Christian. Salt of the earth – preserving culture from self-destruction.

At Relevant we’re all inspired by bloggers like Kristen Welch from We are THAT Family and Ann Voskamp who’ve used their platform to rescue the hurting and connect across the world – the resources of those who have to the needs of those who have not. Proverbs 31 in the age of information.

We were challenged by Ann Voskamp and Joy Forney – The Grace Full Mama to engage in social media with purity of heart and harness it as a tool to spread the gospel without ambition. Stirring the heavens as a “collective, roaring thunder”. Making the road straight for the voice of the Lord in the wilderness. And the Lord of the harvest – He brings the rain.

The Kingdom of God is at hand.

If you were at Relevant, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

If you’re considering blogging – come on in! The road’s paved for a smooth ride.

Moving from one activity to the next - day in and day out – meeting deadlines, giving reminders, picking up debris – going through the motions … void of emotion.

Mothers are the ’heart of the home’ – but we can perform like a machine! And in so doing, we send a message to our family that we have no feelings, are immune to pain and can perform on command. Like a wind-up toy! In turn, when they expect us to keep moving as if we’re super human – we struggle to convey the pain. They struggle to understand.

Weren’t we the mom capable of working around the clock without complaint – just yesterday? Skipping meals, burning the midnight oil, winding ourselves back up with caffeine!

I marvel at the ability God graces us mothers to keep moving – regardless of ourselves. This emergency response system keeps life on course in hard times, we’ve all been there. It’s a gift! But in everyday life, robotic mothering can rob us of life’s rewards and literally wear us out – before our time.

Like you, I like to taste my food, feel the beat of the music and ‘hear’ myself think. I like textures, fresh breezes, and the sound of little feet across the floor. The familiar rhythm of basketballs thumping, wind whipping through the trees, laughter coming from the back room – these are all part of life’s symphony playing out around me.

But, when I’m all wound-up, the sounds of life – elude my senses.

When I find myself caught in this vicious cycle of motion - I have to awaken my soul. At times, I have literally stopped everything possible to reengage as a mother. I’ve called off ‘school’ and headed to the park with everyone – just because.

I want my memories to be sweet – not a blur. When I quit my robotic ways – I start to feel again and return to a real-life person, equipped with emotions, limitations and flaws. By design.

I love this scripture ~ written for moms, like us.

”She who refreshes others will herself, be refreshed.” Proverbs 11:25.

How do you reengage as a mom? I’d love to hear.

At creation, the Lord designed limitations as part of His divine plan.

Deep down, who really likes limits? We want more than we can have – by nature. Our desires, unless supernaturally regenerated, will take us beyond our limitations.

I’ve been thinking about this lately – alot. How can we enjoy God if we feel he’s short-changed us? This must be why Moses relayed God’s original message on choices - ‘Thou shalt not covet’.

As parents, choosing to live within our limits and to be content with what we have is a foundational message of faith for our children.

Our actions can say to them:

The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. Psalm 16:6

In essence: ‘God is good’. As believers, we are the light of the world – preserving society from self-destruction. If we don’t live any differently than the world – what’s to offer? How can God be good if we don’t have enough?

Our nation is 14 + trillion dollars in debt. As a country we have lived beyond our means for as long as some of us can remember.

This isn’t only a Washington problem. All across the land, households spend beyond their means. We stretch for the forbidden fruit.

By design, there’s only so much to go around. Economics call this The Law of Scarcity.

One of the best things we can do for our children and our children’s children is teach them to choose. Life can be lived abundantly, while embracing its built-in limitations. Maturity, by definition, is ‘delayed gratification’. Just pick up an old history book and it’s plain to see. This ‘gotta have it all’ sense of entitlement is only new to our ‘progressive’ society. Our ancestors lives were rich in substance while lean in incidentals.

Mankind has been expected to live with limits ever since the garden.

Only heaven will be limitless ~ eternal.

Today, we have more options than any generation before us. With credit, we can blow right through our financial ceiling with no regard. As parents, we often want ‘just one more thing’ to secure our kids’ happiness. I am as guilty as anyone. We all get caught-up in the momentary pull of the culture. Choices are daily.

Accepting life’s boarders is a faith-walk that our kids can safely follow. We want them to live in freedom and contentment, enjoying all that the Lord has provided.

Remember the ageless Westminster Catechism?

What is the chief end of man?
Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.

Tim and I were in Washington DC the morning of September 11, 2001.

We were given a most generous gift – a trip to Washington DC to attend David Barton’s Wallbuilder’s Pastors & Wives Tour of the Capital. Ironically, this tour was to be held on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. Including a guided tour of the Capital to recount our rich, spiritual heritage. Hosted by our pastor and his wife – we were celebrating a decade of service to the church and launching my husband into a new ministry/career path.

Our long, held dream to visit Washington DC was coming to fruition!

With 10 children at home we rarely traveled without them. I mean rare-ly! My ‘happy place’ was home with our children. I won’t lie – this trip, even in its grandeur, was hard. I didn’t want to leave our little ones. Micah was only 15 months old. I weaned him in time for this trip. The morning of September 10, I awoke in the early morning to nurse him – for the last time – tucked him back in bed, grabbed my luggage and left for the quiet ride in the dark – to the airport. I was 41 years old and knew this would likely be my last opportunity with one so young.

When offered this trip – I wanted to go – but thought a shorter-version might fit our family’s needs. The tour was September 11. I suggested to Tim we fly out early Tuesday morning (9/11) and meet up with our friends just in time for the tour. This seemed like a great idea to me – and it would give me another night at home. He declined. I came back with my idea again, charged with emotional appeal. He could see past my feelings and knew this would be a trip of our dreams – once he got me out of the house. We both knew the kids were in good hands.

Hours later, on a warm, rainy afternoon, we landed at Reagan International Airport. Dropped off our bags in Georgetown (a stones throw from the Pentagon) and headed to The Smithsonian by Taxi. This visit was surreal. We took in every moment: the crowded subway, George Washington University, right next to our hotel, and our destination – the National Mall. It was beautiful to behold. This long, grassy mall stretched past the row of infamous museums – which house the artifacts we had only seen in history books. We ran through the rain across the wet lawn and slipped into the museum. Ever glancing up to see the ominous Washington Monument. This trip was bigger than life for me.

I love museums!

From Lincoln’s top hat to the Hope Diamond we whizzed past every treasure we could see until they made us leave.

Closing time.

The evening of September 10th – I will remember as long as I live. Like a movie you’ve seen over and over. I’ve replayed these details countless times.

Monday evening was a celebration for us. Our pastor and his dear wife had been mentors and leaders in our lives for so long we hardly remember life before their influence. Our children had grown-up and our family prospered in their humble, loving church. Tim had served by his side for years. There was a new day coming – an end to a season. We were looking back and looking ahead in thanks and anticipation. Dinner reservations were made at a fine restaurant. Everyone around us looked important. Was it our imagination or were we among greatness?

After a leisurely dinner we strolled the streets of DC together, the four of us. The moon pinpointed on this vital city – like a flashlight. The sky around it – deep blue and crystal clear.

There was a kind of ‘hush’ in the air. I had never felt more at peace - more secure.

I must confess, I’m a die-hard patriot, postured as a stay-at-home mom. I love this ‘sweet land of liberty’. I choke-up when we sing the National Anthem at ballgames – it gets to me every time. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. The Pilgrims are my heroes. I told my high school classmates that I would be the first woman president. Really, I did! I love this land. To walk in the footsteps of those who forged this nation – to see, first hand, the place of its political birth – was a dream come true.

Once back at the hotel – I called to check on the kids. Tim was right – they were fine. Forcing myself to sleep, I finally drifted off. The anticipation of it all was bigger than life. I felt like a kid on Christmas Eve.

All was still – all was bright. A silent night – indeed.

“Practicing regular, mindful breathing can be calming and energizing and can even help with stress-related health problems ranging from panic attacks to digestive disorders.”
Andrew Weil, M.D.

Our chiropractor recommended this breathing exercise to us some time ago and it’s been a tremendous help. My challenge: Try this for a week – and see if there’s a difference. We truly are fearfully and wonderfully made! Psalm 139:14

Dr. Weil’s 4-7-8 (or Relaxing Breath) Exercise
This exercise is simple and versatile. Sit up straight. Place the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth – behind your upper front teeth, and keep it there through out the exercise.

Exhale completely through your mouth, making an audible ‘whoosh’ sound.
Close your mouth and inhale through your nose to the count of 4.
Hold your breath for a count of 7.
Exhale completely through your mouth, making a ‘whoosh’ sound to a count of 8.
Repeat three more times for a total of four breaths.

This exercise is a natural tranquilizer for the nervous system. Do it at least twice a day.

Once you develop this technique by practicing it every day you can use this technique whenever anything upsetting happens. Before you react – just breathe. Plus, this simple exercise will help you dissolve internal tension and even fall asleep at night!

So, as the school year begins and life picks up a steady pace – things may not be transpiring like you envisioned. When your body feels tense and you’re about to think, say or do something you know is not profitable to those around you …. Just breathe!!

For more info on this fascinating subject – see Dr. Weil’s site, view the youtube tutorial by Dr. Mercola and study how this simple exercise effects your overall health! Keep breathing!

Please let me know how this is working for ya!

As much as I love Thumper! I’ve gotta agree with his Father. Greens are a neglected gold-mine of nutrition. Physically, mentally, emotionally … it’s amazing what ‘live’ food does to nourish the body. This is a simple and effective way take care of momma.

To inspire you – here are some benefits of eating greens - just a few!

Greens are loaded with powerful antioxidants which support our immune system.

Dark greens have Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids which aide in brain function. {Have I convinced you yet?}

Greens have little to no carbohydrates {bonus!}

Chlorophyll {remember that from science?} detoxifies our blood! BTW – disease cannot live in a clean blood system.

Greens balance the body’s PH – taking your body from acidic to alkaline. Basically, saving your life!

For some of us, greens are an ‘aquired taste’. For others – eating greens are a ‘come to momma’ experience. I find myself somewhere in the middle. I love raw greens, but gravitate to processed foods without realizing my ways. For the sake of variety we saute, bake, grill or whatever is needed to keep the greens coming.

The boys and I made vegetable lasagna for Victoria’s 18th birthday dinner. Here’s my old recipe I got from a favorite cookbook, Eating to the Glory of God, by Sharon Bauer. I’ve made this recipe, off and on, for 20+ years and we enjoy it every time. Plus, it’s easy! Maybe recipes like this will help the greens go down a bit easier.

1 (32 oz) jar favorite spaghetti sauce

1 (16 oz) container cottage cheese

Stir spaghetti sauce in with vegetables. Simmer for 5 minutes.

4 Cups Fresh Spinach – washed, stems removed

1 (8 oz) box artichoke lasagna noodles (DeBoles is our favorite!)

1 Cup Mozzarella Cheese – freshly grated

Layer lasagna and refrigerate overnight. Serve the next day.

In 13×9 baking dish, layer ingredients:

Put 2 Tbs of spaghetti sauce in bottom of dish.

Lasagna noodles (uncooked)

Cottage Cheese mixture

Spinach

Vegetables sauce mixture

Mozzarella Cheese

Repeat layers in same order. Top with sauce. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes. Sprinkle with cheese when fresh out of the oven. Let stand 15 minutes before cutting.

In our house – this recipe serves about 4 teenage boys. You think I’m kidding? I double or triple the recipe for family gatherings and serve with Caesar salad, garlic bread and spaghetti on the side. {for the meat lovers} I have made it alongside traditional lasagna – for variety. And like any good lasagna – it tastes even better the next day!

When a cargo ship is floundering. When the destination seems beyond reach – the solution may be as simple as to:

lighten the load!

The same applies to home-life. With ‘school’ looming in the distance, I feel the pressure of making the tasks ahead doable, more simplistic and clear.

So, I’m walking the deck, eyeing the crew and identifying yesterday’s goods. We won’t be going back. That’s where we came from. My eyes are on the land ahead and map in hand.

Don’t worry – not ruthless here. Heirlooms we keep. Scrapbooks assemble and necessities we treasure.

But extra baggage weighs us down. So … I say, ‘off with it’! {haven’t I done this post before?}

We’re clearing away the rubble from yesteryear. Items like, clothing from years before and school books no one wants to see again. With a vengeance, I hunt down the worst offender: items we MIGHT need someday. These critters have stowed themselves away in the crevices of our lives. Freebies of the past that infringe upon the present and presume upon our future.

Battling the ‘Genealogy of Junk’ these items won’t be passed down – in hopes that our children will have a better life and a lighter load.

As for the crew? It’s all hands on deck around here. Each man/woman for her own – organizing this <del datetime="2011-07-28T03:59:14+00:00">ship</del> home.

Already, I can see the binders of books we love, closet floors and containers with lids that fit! We’ve uncovered treasures and never missed what was tossed, sold or given away.

For me? This is my part of ‘taking care of mom‘. Benefiting heart and soul – I can breathe more deeply and enjoy smooth sailing.

Are you tossing cargo overboard in preparation to land this fall in a new place? We’d love to hear the details!

Summer read: Organizing from the Inside Out and that’s just what I’ve been doing.

Did you know that our bodies are 60% water? Some organs are up to 90% – like our lungs. Get this – our brains are up to 70% water in composition.

That’s my Sesame Street version of anatomy. I find these facts fascinating! Pure water is directly tied to the quality of our lives. Water is our body’s principal chemical and worthy of preference in our diets.

Tap water, although filtered, is left with a residue of chemicals, poisons and nowadays – pharmaceuticals! Yep! People flush their pills and the city filtering systems can’t quite keep up with the complexity of filtering. So, it’s up to us – the consumers – to be aware and protect ourselves from the harsh chemicals in tap water.

Pure drinking water is ideal for our bodies needs.

I began to purchase filtered water during my first pregnancy. We lived in a town, which was known for having ‘bad’ water and I didn’t want to put our baby at risk.

A few years later, we purchased an under the counter reverse-osmosis filter. One of the best things we ever did! We have moved that unit from house to house for 20 yrs. It’s serviced annually and we change out the filters. Easy! When we return from a trip away – the kids head for the filtered water as soon as we hit the door. I guess we’re raising bonafide ‘water snobs’ and unapologetically so.

How much water should we drink? Here’s an easy way to calculate - 1 ounce for every 2 pounds of body weight. Let’s SAY I weigh … 120 lbs … that would require me to drink 60 oz per day. Or, 8, 8 ounce glasses for me! Wallah! It’s that simple. You can calculate for your children too. Obviously, we drink more when exercising and less when maybe … sick.

Here’s some interesting facts about water that effect us everyday:

Water regulates body temperature.

Pure water eliminates poisonous waste by flushing them out of our system.

Air travel increases your need for water and so does altitude.

Avoid drinking water ½ hour before meals and 2 hours afterwards for optimal digestion.

Next to oxygen, water is the most important element for staying ALIVE.

Being hydrated keeps you mentally sharp!

Adequate hydration reverses the effects of water retention.

Dehydration hinders weight loss.

As moms, this is a simple way to care for our bodies – while never leaving home. DRINK! Stay hydrated with fresh, pure water to maintain optimal health. Amazingly simple, huh?

Sunshine and pure water. Add these to your day and see if they makes a difference.

Genesis 1:31, “Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.”

“Nature is not God but God revealing the weight of Himself, all His glory, through the looking glass of nature.” Anne Voscamp – One Thousand Gifts.

Got any water stories? What type of filter does your family use? Has your life been changed by consuming clean water? I’d love to hear your stories. Please leave a comment!

I promise these posts will get to be more FUN. I’ve got to say the basics before we can go on to the extras! I’ve been out of town without Internet – this explains the delay in posts.

I’ll be back soon with more on taking care of Mom!

Sunshine is medicine.

When we spend time in the fresh air and sunshine – our bodies soak in the goodness of the Creator’s powerful healer – designed for His creation. Us!

Sunshine is relaxing.

It soothes the nervous system. In the old days they called it ‘sun bathing’. Basking in the sun helps heal an anxious mind and even promotes sound sleep!

With the school year coming soon and the busy-ness of fall responsibilities lurking in the distance – take a break and enjoy the sun.

During the tough season’s in life I crave the sun, God’s healing agent. Like, when our house had been on the market for some time and we’d found the home we had been praying for {the home we now live in}. The grace period to sell our existing residence was running out! During those anxious days, I’d often head to the backyard, while the kids were resting and lie in the sun. Reading the Word and praying, during one of those times, I got the phone call announcing – we had a breakthrough! The house sold within days and our lives took a turn that we had hoped and prayed for. I could tell so many stories like this. The sun really nourishes our body, soul and spirit.

When the kids were little we always had a plastic baby pool. After they were through playing, I’d have MY time in the pool. After basking in the sun and I felt refreshed to face the day. I called it our ‘suburban pool’. It worked for me. Plus, we had a 6′ fence. The neighbors had no clue.

Here in Texas, late July, it is H-O-T! I’m enjoying this sun. I try to get a daily dose – even for a short time.

When I embrace the sun, I find it more bearable. The summers when I run from air-conditioned house to air-conditioned car – I have a harder time tolerating the heat.

Here are some tips to let the sun SHINE in your life these last few summer weeks:

If you have fair skin – take in the morning sun. Actually, morning sun is better for you anyway. {before 11:00 AM}

Sun bathing releases toxins in your body. Once you sweat from the heat, shower within 20 minutes. Toss your towel in the laundry and don’t reuse it!

If you can’t get out in the sun – choose natural lighting over artificial whenever possible. Pull back the drapes and let the sun shine in.

Sunshine heals wounds. Expose the ‘boo-boo’ to the sun and watch it heal.

Take your work out of doors. I carry a basket full of ‘work’ to do while soaking in the sun.

Coconut oil is my favorite sunning oil! Aw, the smell! Plus, it’s a cure for dry skin.

The rays of the sun are a powerful germicide.

If you tend to burn – limit your time to 20-30 minutes. This will do wonders!

Sunlight enters through your eye to the pineal glad, located in the center of your brain. Healing is released for eyesight, brain, desire for food and the list goes on and on.

We can’t live without sunshine. The sun brings life!

Heather at Mommypotamus has a great post on sunscreen. Let’s just say, I agree with her!

If you embrace the sun as a lifestyle, good for you! I’d love to hear how this works for you. Please leave a comment!

See you tomorrow with more on taking care of MOM!
