I think you misunderstood my argument, when I referred to Urdu I was just using it as metaphor for the sense of encampment that I think best characterizes Islamic experience in India. I am quite surprised why you think that Urdu as a language is a problem, surely you don't want Persian or Arabic to be taught in India.

Makkuji, I plead guilty to regurgitating well known facts and being a empty vessel making noise. However I would like to think that not many people have framed their arguments in term of identity or at least I haven't encountered.

Now I don't agree with you in that the deliberate distortion of Indian history by Congress has anything to do with the unity of India, it may need a separate to flesh this but the idea is that all these lies are aimed towards maintaining secular stranglehold over Hindus.

Also it may come as surprise but while I argue that Islam has been in conflict with India, the biggest threat to India right now doesn't come from Islam but from itself.

Now while I don't mind political incorrectness, I disagree with your solution. What you are proposing is in fact a class of slaves. Prosperity of Indians is only possible on the basis of freedom of its citizen. Also may be it's because I am much less knowledgeable and therefore lack the perspective I am less sanguine about India's prospects. May be it's because I am a Hindu Fascist but the only way India can rise is by realizing its identity.

Now my concern here is not that Muslim are getting disproportionate share of booty. I believe, on almost all socio-economic indicators Muslim lag behind other groups. What I gear is the conflict between Islamic and Indian identity will hold India back.

Well it was certainly not my main point. Anyway if you read the previous post you will find I argue Hindutva as presented today is not electoral viable, however I will still that it is wrong to argue that violence was a significant factor in present elections.

I am not talking about reasons for BJP's loss. I am saying violence is perhaps the reason Hindutva is not viable electorally.

Speaking of BJP's loss in the past two elections, I think it has to do with its loss of their virginity. Until the late 90s, the BJP could say "you've been ruling us for half a century and look what you've done" to the Congress. That no longer works (though it is true, read reality check's recent post). Even on the issue of national security, people (intelligentsia) are quick to point out Kandahar and the Parliament attacks. It is literally impossible for the BJP to point out bad policies of the government of the day. The way out is to try the 90's technique in states where they've not been in power yet.

Actually if you will read again I have talked about getting rid of Muthalik and his ilk "Provided we get rid of the more unsavory elements, call them lumpen Hindutva to make a distinction".
Anyway I am not convinced that violence alone was the reason BJP lost the elections (or even a primary reason). Despite all the hue and cry BJP won the elections in Karnataka handily. True it is unlikely that violence endeared BJP to Pink Chaddi brigade, but I rather doubt that Pink Chaddi brigade was going to vote for BJP anyway or that the demography is that important election wise.
Main problem was the violence resulted in really crappy visuals for BJP these visuals were deftly used by ELM to sour small city electorate mood towards. However even the visuals just contributed to the existing disenchantment and thus suppressed the support, I really doubt that violence alone was ever a significant issue.

Reg. premise since I am only responding to the debate I am not setting the premise it has been already set, viz BJP can win by being center of right party.

Reg belief, its all and good but the thing that matters in the end is who has the power or who is the victor. Frankly Hindu spirit of detachment is nothing but covering its moral indifference and civilizational defeatism with respectability. I think India can do without this spirit of detachment.

Ultimate aim of who? The vEdAntic philosophy talks of that as the final end of human evolution, but it isn't realistic to expect people to do their actions with that end in view. Don't you think an overwhelming majority of your daily actions are all directed at material gain in mind rather than spiritual? The point is, we are not yet ready for sannyAsa or even sAdhana-based gRhasthAshrama. As long as our mind is mostly concerned with satisfaction of immediate desires rather than knowledge of truth, all that can be expected of us is to live satisfying our desires, but in a manner conducive to dharma.

You may ask the million dollar question "What is dharma", over which Yossarin and Seriously Sandeep have killed each other. But since there is no dharmashAstra laying out stuff for modern times all we can do is, follow our individual consciences in this regard.

I will also quote from the this comment that I got in my live journal :
Perhaps the notions of karma, akarma and vikarma are different for moksha-seekers vs. the dharmic-life people vs. the materialists.

The first kind have to reduce their kAmya-karmas. The Second ones can do kAmya-karmas as long as it is in the realm of dharma. The third ones have their karmas driven only by desire (icchha-dvesha).

Sure. I was aware of that, but wanted to clarify.

I will also remark that I am not convinced with "all India" explanations for BJP's failure. Most trends, at least from my rudimentary glance ( didn't check in detail ), seemed state-specific.

Customs are important but I am really not sure that decline of Hinduism has anything to with Indian wearing pants instead of dhoti, or Nadar women covering their breasts.
