It's time admit...I need help...

I do.

It's painful.
You dread getting dressed for work.
You hate walking out the door.
You don't embrace the day.
You do the bare minimum in public, then go back to your hiding hole at home.
It's not a life.
It's barely an existence.

It's time to get real.

Whenever I'm invited to an event, I try to put on a brave face, and dress myself up as best I can. I've always tried to make the best of what I've got. I might not be able to wear fashionable clothing, so I dress up my outfits with fashionable accessories and colours. I try...and then a photo like this surfaces. I was mortified! I'm so much bigger than every one else. It just reinforced that I've been lying to myself about how bad it is. I guess in a way, I'm thankful. It's the kick up the butt I need!

Whenever I share a photo of myself, I always make sure it's taken from a high angle to eliminate my double chin. Once again, I'm not just fooling those I share the photo with, but myself. Then this was captured...my side profile in all of it's "glory". Once again...mortified. My head looks so swollen and my features have all but disappeared. Further proof that something drastic needs to happen.

So, today, I signed up to Michelle Bridges' next round of the 12 Week Body Transformation.

I'm scared.
I'm anxious.
I'm doubtful.
I can't picture myself thin.
I don't know what the future holds.
It has to be better than what it is now.
I don't want to fear the future.
I want to embrace it.

The Block | Week 5 round up...

Just when the couples from The Block thought hell week was over...this week they had to deliver not one, not two...but three rooms! The foyer, staircase and another bedroom. You may not consider the foyer and staircase to be rooms, however there is an equal amount of work required to make these spaces functional and stylish. There was a massive difference between 4th and 1st place this week...the chumps scoring 19/30 (which I thought was pretty harsh), and this week's winner's scoring an impressive 27/30! Here's why...

Dani and Dan - guest room and hallway
This week, Dani and Dan scored the lowest marks on the block. They have all but striped any of the original features out of this terrace home, including the beautiful archway at the end of the hallway. The wall colour, flooring, pendant lights and artwork on the floor are all incredible, however they were seriously let down by the squared off archway. I don't know what they were thinking. Hopefully they'll be able to find some time and cash to rectify it before sale.

The gloss black stair case looks amazing, and is right on trend. The original details are highlighted beautifully with this finish, and help integrate the staircase into the modern design that Dani and Dan are going for.

Now this was a major risk...zinc covered stair treads. I love the gloss black down either side of the staircase, but I think this would have worked better with dark grey carpet through the centre. I have in the back of my mind that these are supposed to be family homes. Is the zinc hard to maintain, and would it be slippery once it gets a little dusty? Personally, if I bought this house, this would be the first thing I would replace.

Dani and Dan's third bedroom is just lovely, and perfect for a teenage girl. The wallpaper feature wall, cushions and artwork all work really well together. Neal Whittaker commented that he couldn't see how they relate together. In my opinion, they don't need to be exactly matching...the colours compliment each other well, and there's a range of pattern sizes...I guess that's the scrapbooker in me. lol.

Opposite the king single bed, is a built in wardrobe and desk area. Once again, perfect for a teenager. If you swapped out the cushions and artwork for something a little more masculine, this room would work for a teenage boy as well as the wallpaper isn't too feminine. I think Dani and Dan were really unlucky this week. If it weren't for the dodgy arch and zinc stair treads, they would have scored a lot higher.

Mike and Andrew - guest room and hallway
I love that the brothers kept the original archway in their terrace house, and complimented it with a modern pendant light and dark timber floors. Unfortunately it looks unfinished. The hallway could really have done with a splash of colour on the walls...a bold artwork or even a mirror. As it stands, it just doesn't look very welcoming. They did admit last night that they ran out of time, so it will be nice to see what they add.

Once again, the brothers have created quite a masculine space with loads of built in storage, clean lines and neutral colourings. They've mixed it up this week by adding a feminine bird print quilt cover, artwork and bedside tables...and a plethora of cushions. The judges were critical of their styling choices, saying that there were too many birds...and I agree. Each of the items independently are nice, but all together it looks way too themey.

I absolutely love this side table! It's so sweet, and would be perfect in a tween/teens room. I'm not convinced it works in a sophisticated adult guest room though. I think this room needs a little tweaking before it goes on the market.

Brad and Lara - guest room and hallway
This entryway is so welcoming. The beautiful original archway perfectly frames the staircase to the upper levels; the hall table is a great place to drop your keys as you walk in the door; and let's not ignore the killer Fandango lamp hanging from the ceiling. It floats like a cloud in this space...so soft and light.

The view is equally as impressive looking towards the front door. Brad and Lara did a fabulous job restoring the original corbels at the base of the arch. The white paint throughout makes this space feel so welcoming, and the glass bottles on the hall table add a much needed pop of colour.

Brad and Lara have been blessed and cursed with the largest house on The Block...loads of space to work with, but lots more work to do. I love the styling in this room. It's bright and airy, with ample room around the bed. Brad and Lara have stayed true to their design style, using the same ceiling fan and down lights that they've used throughout the rest of the house. The neutral colours work really well, with the addition of teal.

I absolutely love the teal chevron cushion on the bed, and the chevron European pillows at the back...love that pattern! It suits both sexes. The bench seat and green ottoman look great too. This is a beautiful bedroom that would suit many people. I wouldn't mind having this room myself!

Sophie and Dale - guest room and hallway
This week's winners with an impressive 27/30! Sophie and Dale have restored the original brickwork back to it's former glory, teaming it with timber flooring and statement light fitting, to create a moody and welcoming entry way. The beaded pendant light is just stunning, and so detailed. It really has that WOW factor and gives your guests a hint as to how beautiful the rest of the house must be.

Size doesn't need to be an issue when it comes to style. Sophie and Dale have made the most of this small room to create a bedroom perfect for any child or teenager. To save on space, the newlyweds to the risk of painting a bedhead on the wall...genius! I'm also impressed with the vintage luggage drawers designed by Sophie. I have seen this idea on Pinterest before, but this one is executed beautifully.

Opposite the king single bed is a beautiful forest wallpaper. Wallpaper is back in a big way, and this print is so striking, without overpowering the room. The little desk is perfect for a child to sit and colour, and imagine and play. I love this space and I know my daughter would love this room. This room isn't large, but it's huge on impact. Congrats Sophie and Dale on your first win!

6 layouts, 1 scrapbook kit...

Back in mid March, I hosted the first Storyboard Kits retreat, and we had an absolute ball. I was joined by 35 ladies at The Tops conference centre for a weekend full of scrapbooking fun! Good company, good food and lots of inspiration...

I'm gearing up to announce next year's retreat, and release a new kit...but before I do that, I thought I'd share the layouts I created using the Storyboard Kits retreat goodie bag! Each retreater received an exclusive Storyboard Kit and I kept one for myself to play with...I needn't have packed any other product! These 6 layouts came from the one kit, and there was still product left over...

Andrew's Nanna...I love this photo of her taken at my b.i.l's wedding last November. The ladies at the nursing home fixed her hair specially, and drove her down to Wollongong for her to witness the ceremony. She was so happy...I miss her.

Lastly, my layout for the sketch challenge...also featuring some WOW mini scallop frames. This is the first time we took Seth to the Easter Show, and he had such much fun in the animal nursery. We wasn't so much patting the sheep, as whacking them! lol.

Yes, each of the layouts above came from the one kit! Storyboard Kits are chock full of patterned papers and products, so that each of your layouts can have it's own identity. I love that the colours in each one are so different.

This week I'll be releasing a new kit named "Morgan", so keep an eye out for that one, as well as some class kits left over from the retreat, PLUS the details for next year's retreat! How to create a Ninjago cake...the easy way!

Each year, I make a special cake for my children's birthdays, based on their favourite thing at the time. Ninjago is the number one toy in this house, so when it came to selecting what cake to make my son this year, it was an absolute no brainer...it had to be a ninja! In this post, I will share with you how easy it can be to create your own Ninjago inspired cake. There's no need to know fancy fondant techniques, own specialty cake decorating tools, or even know how to bake! Sound good? Read on...

You will need:

rectangular cake/slice tin )
circular cake board or large plate
2 x your favourite packet cake mix
2 x tins of ready made white frosting
food colouring
licorice strips
Wilton black sparkle gel
Cake inspiration photo

Step one - bake the cake
Bake two separate cakes according to the directions on the packet, in a rectangular cake/slice tin. You may need to adjust the baking time, so keep an eye on it. I have used a Chef's Toolbox slice pan which measures 28x22x4cm. Allow the cakes to cool in the refrigerator overnight. If you're pressed for time, bake just one cake for a thinner finished product or purchase a ready made slab cake from your local bakery.

Step two - gather your decorating supplies
Over the years I have accumulated a number of food colourings, and they're all kept together in a tub in the pantry with patty cake cases, sprinkles etc. You can make any colour though by having the basics - red, blue, yellow and green.

Step three - shape your cake

Layer your two cakes together, spreading a little of the frosting or jam between the two to fix them together. Then, using a bread knife, start cutting your cake into shape. A Ninjago's head is a little pointed at the top, and more pointed at the bottom. No need to use a template...just trim a little away at a time until it looks similar to your inspiration image. Transfer the cut cake to your cake plate or board, adding a little icing underneath to stick your cake in place.

Step four - ice your light colour first

Place a small amount of white frosting in a bowl and add some yellow food colouring. Mix together, adding a little more yellow if needed. Next, mark out the yellow face part of your ninja with a knife, then fill the area with yellow frosting. You can see in this image, I have a jug of water handy. Keeping your butter knife/spatula in boiling water will allow you to spread the icing out easier. Scrap away any icing outside of the face area.

Step five - ice the rest of your cake

Mix up a large quantity of icing in your chosen ninja's colour. Red = Kai; Blue = Jay; White = Zane; Black = Cole. Seth chose Kai, so blue it is!

Spread the blue frosting over the rest of top of your cake, and down the sides. Smooth out the sides, the add a little more frosting on top, then sweep your knife across to create a "wrapped" look to your ninja's mask. Be careful not to get any blue icing on the yellow.

Step six - time to add character

Using your inspiration photo as a guide, cut out the eyes and eyebrows for your ninja from the licorice. Add the pieces to your cake, gently pressing them into the icing. Add a little dot of white frosting to the eyes to finish them off. To soften up the lines of the face, push a little of the blue icing down onto the yellow. Lastly, clean up around your cake using a damp cloth.

Step seven - personalise your cake
Using the Wilton's black sparkle gel, pipe out your birthday message to your birthday child! If you're feeling crafty, try replicating the Ninjago font. No need to worry if you get the spacing wrong, or make a spelling mistake...the gel will easily wipe away for you to have another go. Once finished, pop your cake into the fridge until you're ready to celebrate.

Step eight - sit back and enjoy!
You can see from the look on my son's face that he's thrilled with his cake this year! This cake took under an hour to decorate, and the effect was well worth the effort. My son loved it, and he's already making plans for next year's cake!

It's really not that hard to create a character cake...just take it slow, and remember your child will appreciate whatever you create! If your child asks for something that is a little on the difficult side, use this little white lie...the image is copyrighted and you can't recreate it! lol.

The Block | Week 4 round up...

This week on The Block, the four couples delivered four very individual and inspiring bathrooms. One of the most important rooms in any home is the family bathroom. It will take up a big chunk of your renovation budget, so getting it right is a must! Chances are, you won't be replacing it any time soon. So, what makes a great family bathroom? A functional layout that allows for loads of room to move, good storage for all of your family's daily needs, fittings and fixtures that won't date in a hurry, easy to clean surfaces...and a little bit of style. Here's the main bathrooms revealed on the block...

Sophie and Dale - main bathroom and laundry
Sophie and Dale integrated their laundry into the bathroom, reducing the amount of usable bathroom space considerably. The trade off was a small bath tub with over head shower. The bathroom they delivered though was very stylish. The timber vanity adds some much need warmth, and I love the little vintage touches they've added during styling. Love the frosted windows too! They allow a lot of light to bounce around this bright space.

Here's the side view of the cabinet. I like that the toilet roll dispenser is tucked away out of sight. Whilst I'm not a huge fan of patterned bath towels, I do like the chevron pattern on these ones. Overall, I think they did a great job with this family bathroom.

Mike and Andrew - main bathroom
The judges described this bathroom as having Hollywood appeal, and you can see why thanks to the wall to wall mirrors and lighting. Mike and Andrew chose not to include their laundry in this space, to allow room for a separate shower and bath. The shower itself was lined with marble, giving this room elegance galore. The judges were quite critical of their choice of bath tub though, as it was quite mundane, ie. normal. lol. A lot of homes in Australia would have a very similar bath and be very happy with it.

The judges also criticised the brothers for over styling the space, which I do agree with. Each of the individual items were great...there was just too many of them. There was floor to ceiling mirror along one wall, and I would dread cleaning it! You'd want to have a lifetime supply of Viva Glass and Mirror Wipes!! I can't imagine this bathroom being used by a young family, that's for sure.

Dani and Dan - main bathroom and laundry
aka...the controversial bathroom of the week! Dani and Dan abused the noise restrictions by grinding and cutting tiles until after 1am. The other couples voiced their disappointment, and Scott Cam fined Dani and Dan $1,000. They were still in the running to win, and I was kind of hoping their bathroom would suck...but it didn't! They presented a really sophisticated space with a very dramatic black and white colour scheme. I really like the pendant light hanging above the bath, but I wonder about the safety aspect of it (knowing how much water my children fling around!). The white subway tile and stylish bath tub contrasts beautifully with the oversized black tile.

To be honest, I hadn't noticed the vanity until now...I like how the shape of the basin mimics the bath tub too. Dani and Dan expanded the dimensions of their bathroom, so as not to compromise their design by including a separate shower, and laundry inside the bathroom. I think it works well, I'm still not convinced that laundries in bathrooms work well. Although this is a really nice space, I think it's way too dark and looks like it belongs more in a luxury hotel, rather than a family home.

Finally, Brad and Lara win a room reveal! I am loving this bathroom. It's really spacious, with it's wet area comprising bath and separate shower. It'd be a great space to bath the children. The bath looks as though it has a "bed head", with the faucets mounted to a timber frame. The step up to the wet area gives it a little grandeur too. Once again, there's a patterned bath towel, which not only softens the space, but makes it appear a little more casual.

Brad and Lara installed a sliding door into the bathroom, giving the room more usable space. The chunky timber shelving unit adds some much needed warmth to the space, and provides some much needed storage for towels. I like that the toilet is somewhat tucked behind the shelves to give a little privacy too.

The basin Brad and Lara selected looks almost identical to the one chosen by Mike and Andrew, however, mounting it to the side gives the vanity ample counter space for the family to use. The judges commented that they needed to add more in the way of styling, perhaps a print, but I think they've nailed the brief on this one. It's spacious, stylish, functional and has loads of storage. Well done Brad and Lara!

You know you're sick when...

You will more than happily watch infomercials on day time television, and the slice-o-matic and shark navigator vacuum all start making complete sense! Someone hand me the telephone...the first 100 callers get a free ah-bra or some such nonsense.

The flu season has well and truly started early in the Warren household this year! I think we're single handily keeping the local medical centre running. Last week alone, I saw the doctor four times, and Eme twice. This week it's Seth and Andrew's turn, with their second visits happening today. Think of all that bulk billing!!

Surprisingly, each of us have had completely different strains of the cold/flu virus. I have been suffering from a chest infection sent straight from hell. I'm still on four antibiotics a day, ventolin, seretide, and panadol. I've tried nasal sprays, throat gargles, cough medicines, you name it. Thankfully I'm starting to feel a little more human, but the coughing, oh the coughing, continues. If I was thinner, I think my abs would be ripped by now!

I am so thankful that my hubby is incredible at getting the kids ready for school, making dinners and ensuring the essential household stuff happens. I was literally confined to bed for a whole week, only venturing out at dinner time to eat and spend some time with the family. I'm also very thankful for my mother-in-law for dropping over bowls of Nanna's chicken soup...it's like penicillin in a bowl! Andrew whipped up a massive pot of it last night too...so good!! I'd give you the recipe, but then they'd have to kill me. lol.

Ironically, I'm heading off to meet the people from Bisolvon tomorrow where they'll be sharing tips for keeping your family well and to help safeguard them from impolite coughers this winter. Maybe they can use me as a bad example?

The Block | Week 3 round up...

Last night on The Block, the four couples revealed their guest room designs! I was really looking forward to seeing how the rooms came together; whether they would go down the whole "guest room" route, or make a bedroom more practical for family living. IMHO, a guest room is a luxury, and the children's rooms would come first. I guess it depends on what market they're selling to. I would have thought that these townhouses would be family homes, not just for a professional couple. The couples were also challenged to install a powder room on the ground floor, underneath the stairwell. Having a downstairs WC is an essential, especially if you're working from home, and having clients to visit. You wouldn't want everyone trudging upstairs to use the facilities. It's great for families too...how many times have you come home, and done the dance of the busting man at the front door while trying to insert the key into the lock? lol.

Here's how the couples interpreted the "guest room" and "powder room" brief...

Sophie and Dale - guest room and powder room
Sophie and Dale's contemporary shabby chic style is really growing on me. Once again, they have stuck to their neutral colour palette, with pops of colour to accessorise. Third room in, and you can really see what direction this home is going. The bench seat, with integrated bedside table, and storage, is a great idea for this space. This room would be great for a teenage girl...you can just image sitting there in front of the window, reading a book...or perhaps holding court with her friends. The small writing desk is a nice touch, but it isn't particularly practical. Mind you, in this technological age, chances are you'd only be using a netbook on top.

On the opposing wall are two built in wardrobes with mirrored doors, as well as a number of cutout shelves. Imagine them with a row of Blythe dolls, or perfume bottles, books and cds. I didn't like that feature on first glance, but the more I see it, the more functional it appears. The cluster of art drawers out the colours of the bedding...greys, yellows and peach. The layered pillows and throw rugs make you just want to dive into this bed...so very welcoming! I also love the grey architraves featured throughout all of the rooms revealed so far. It's the consistency of the trim that ties all of the rooms together.

Let's face it. There's not a lot you can do in such a small space, however Sophie and Dale have made some great choices for their powder room. Concealing the cistern inside the wall is a great space saving idea, and the oversized buttons are a great feature. I'm not quite sure why they chose to install the toilet off-centre though.

The exposed original brickwork cleaned up beautifully, and is a real feature in this small space...adding much need warmth. The mini basin, with underbench hand towel rail, is ideal for this space too. I like the hand towels that they've chosen. Even the smallest room of the house needs a little pattern.

The judges loved this room, awarding it the most points for the night (until Dani and Dan won it out from under them...more on that later). The concept of this room is interesting. The custom made bunk beds allow for a great shared space. I love the colours, the window treatments and the storage solutions...although the styling confuses me. I don't understand the Elmo doll, with the teenagers skateboard.

The same confusion continues with the styling of the integrated workspace. Everything displayed on the shelves relates to a toddler, or small child; yet the desk and chair is designed for a teenager. Given the double bed and single bed combo for the bunk bed, I can't see those two age groups sharing a bedroom...can you?

This bedroom also featured the mother of all flat screen televisions...teenage heaven!! I think you'd only ever see your teenager when they were hungry. Then the room gets confusing again...on the wall behind the tv, you can see the mdf tree, with hand print leaves, and rope ladder, which just screams toddler/young child. I'm not sure what potential buyers will think of this space.

Unfortunately there are no images to share of Mike and Andrew's powder room available at the time of writing this post. It was a good looking space, with wall to ceiling mirrors, making this small space look triple the size.

Brad and Lara - guest room and powder room
I really love this room! It's light and airy, with a killer walk in wardrobe. I would have given anything to have this room as a teenager! It would be your own personal retreat. Once again, Brad and Lara have teamed the original ceiling rose with a stainless steel ceiling fan, with downlights in the corners of the room. The bed looks super soft, and the touches of green in this neutral space work really well. The judges commented that the shelving to the side of the fireplace needed a little more on it, and I do agree. I also think an ornate mirror, or perhaps a large piece of art hung above the fireplace would have given this room a little more character. btw - the fireplace works!! What a bonus!

Brad and Lara took a risk this week, and added a floating bedhead/room divider to the space. Does it work? I'm not too sure, but I do love the extra storage hidden within. Imagine storing your shoe collection in there. The false wall does jut out into the room, and won't be to every one's taste. This is large room, and I think it can handle it.

Inside the walk in wardrobe, there is ample hanging space, with double hanging one end, single hanging the other, and a large chest of drawers in the center. What teenage girl would want that? Heck, I want that! There isn't a whole lot you can do to style this area, but I probably would have swapped out the birdcage for a tray with crystal bottles, brush etc, to add a little more luxury.

I honestly thought all four powder rooms would look so similar, but boy I was wrong! Brad and Lara installed a Caroma Profile 5 toilet suite with integrated basin!! Not only does this toilet suite save space, it saves water. The basin in the top allows you to wash your hands, then the water is recycled to fill the cistern and flush the toilet. Brilliant! This is a great environmental initiative, and I can this style of toilet suite becoming more and more popular in the future. The other design elements in the powder room work really well, with the exposed brick, simple light fitting and mirror creating a moody, warm space. I truly believe they deserved to win this week, but hey, I'm not a judge. :-)

Dani and Dan - guest room and powder room
The bold blue chosen by Dani and Dan was seen as a risk, and it paid off! Dani and Dan were half a point behind Mike and Andrew this week, and thanks to a bonus point earned a couple of weeks ago, they were able to snatch first prize! Good for them. I think this room is beautiful. The colour is very similar to our own master bedroom. Most people are used to sleeping in pale coloured rooms, and there is the concern that this colour closes the space in. To a degree, this is true...but in a good way. Having a room this colour is incredibly soothing and warm. It's like sleeping in a big hug.

It's amazing how many colours go with a dark blue...look at the selection of pillows Dani and Dan have added to their bed. It looks so inviting! The purple, teal, yellow and creams work beautifully together, don't you think.

During the lead up to the room reveal, Dani raised her concerns over how the furniture was too big for the space. A double sized bed instead of the queen used, would have given them just that little bit more room for a second side table, and perhaps a larger chair. The tripod lamp in the corner looks great, however I think the timber chair looks a little lost. It doesn't look very inviting as a place to sit and read, but it would be great to sit there and do up your shoes in the morning.

There's not a whole lot I can add to the powder room...like the other rooms there's the exposed brick, hidden cistern, small sink etc. I love the hanging light and wall mounted soap dispenser. You have to think creatively to get as much into a small space as possible, and I think this works.

Congratulations to Dani and Dan for their win for Week 3! There's a couple of things I'll be taking away from The Block this week...the colour scheme from Sophie and Dale's guest room (for my new living room); and the linen coloured curtains from Dani and Dan's guest room (they look gorgeous with the navy walls!).

This week, the couples will be designing the main bathrooms for the house. Will they stick with the neutral grey floor / white tile / glass wall combos again...or will they add a little more luxury or colour? Time will tell. Enjoy watching the drama unfold during Week 4 on The Block!

Ethos Design update...the buffet!

I love my buffet. I run my hand across the top every time I walk past it. I love it's curves, it's diamond patterned veneer, and all the bumps and scratches that come with age. I have had it since March 2011 (a birthday gift to me that my family chipped in for). Before me, it had been in the one family since the 1940's. The couple that sold it to me were so sad they couldn't take it with them when they moved interstate, and I promised to look after it. Love it.

A couple of months ago, when I had the opportunity to work with Anna from Ethos Design, this was one area where I wanted some help...to really make this piece shine. Although I love the home print by May and Belle, it looked completely lost hanging above the buffet. It just wasn't working. I have since moved the framed print to another area of our home, and followed Anna's advice to hang a mirror in it's place.

Anna's advice...

"A mirror will help reflect light from the door around the room, and a striking piece here will provide a beautiful focal point when combined with the buffet."

"Buffets are a perfect place for a lamp to add more ambient lighting...Rather than keeping it plain, a lampshade provides the perfect opportunity to bring some pattern into the dining room. I’d suggest buying a length of the feature cushion fabric and using it to cover a plain shade, adding more teal trim for contrast."

Challenge accepted...ta da!!

This is a work in progress for our home. The lamp base Anna recommended from Ikea, wasn't available at either of the Sydney stores, so it was onto plan B...find one that had a similar feel. I fell in love with this Venice table lamp from Freedom. I like the scale, the clear, antiqued glass, and metal base. The slightly tapered shade fills the space beautifully. Overall, this lamp suited the look and feel of the buffet and the mirror...I love combining old and new and making it work together.

The Cairo mirror, also from Freedom, is just beautiful! Anna got this choice absolutely spot on. The beveled detail on the mirror gives it old world charm, while the brass finish and clean lines of this masculine style mirror, make it work with everything else in the space. It fills the space so perfectly above the buffet...the added bonus being that I can now see what's going on in the kitchen while I'm seated in the bay window area of our living room. No more kids sneaking into the pantry and fridge! lol.

As mentioned above, Anna recommended that I customise the lamp shade by using a patterned fabric. When I ordered a couple of handmade pillow covers from Aurelia6311, I also asked if I could purchase an extra length of the Dwell Studio Chinoiserie Vintage Plume fabric. Thankfully Aurelia had extra! It doesn't hurt to ask, does it. Next step...covering the lampshade...

I haven't actually gotten around to the covering part yet...I'm still trying to decide which part of the fabric to use (it's all so lovely!). There are a couple of peacocks featured, and I want to get the right one front and centre. Here I am testing the fabric to see what level of light shines through.

It's amazing what a little pop of colour and pattern can do for your space! Even though I like the white shade, I am preferring the pattern there. Once I've covered the lamp shade, I'll be adding a little band of teal ribbon top and bottom to finish it off.

For now, I'm just enjoying the mirror and lamp as they are, and getting used to seeing my reflection every time I walk past. The change has added so much warmth to our buffet and dining space.

Decorating your home can be a slow process...enjoy all the small changes as you go! There's no need to finish it all in one hit. Every little update we make to our decor makes me feel so much happier. I think I'm just going to enjoy this little vignette before I move onto the next. Watch this space...

The Block | Week 2 round up...

It was hell week on The Block! Two rooms to complete...the master bedroom and and ensuite. Throw in a two day challenge, and a building challenge, and that doesn't leave a lot of time to renovate, shop, decorate...and sleep! The teams this week averaged around 2 hours sleep over the 48 hours prior to the room delivery. They must have been running on adrenaline and coffee, and had their eyelids propped open with tooth picks. Let's check out their beautiful rooms this week!

Sophie and Dale - master bedroom
Last week, Sophie and Dale's dining room was criticised for being more shabby than chic. This week, they delivered a bedroom that was not only sophisticated, but retained their whimsical style. The sanded back door bedhead is gorgeous. I love the blues and greens peeking through the layers of paint, as well as the holes left by the door handles. The mason jar downlights are a hit too!

The bedding is lovely...just a little bit of rust red makes this grey and white colour combination pop! The combination of traditional geometric print cushions and playful cloud and bird cushions work so well together, without making this master bedroom seem junior. I am so glad they had custom curtains made this week! They certainly give this room the sense of luxury it deserves.

The bookcase to the side of the built in wardrobe is an unexpected and delightful touch. I love the ottoman and pillows here, but think a winged back chair would have worked better, raising the height of this vignette, and tying in the fabulous bird wall art. At the moment, it looks like it doesn't relate to the rest of the space. Overall, this room is a winner, and a massive improvement on their dining room. I can't wait to see what they do next!

Sophie and Dale - ensuite
This is such a narrow space to work with and I think they did pretty well. The clean lines of this ensuite and the neutral colours won't date in a hurry. I do agree with the judges though...you wouldn't want to be too tall for that toilet...you would bang your knees on the wall when sitting down. You may also need to walk sideways past the loo when exiting the shower...minding not to bang your back on the towel rail.

It's pretty clear from last week's guest bedroom, and this week's master bedroom, what Dani and Dan's style is. The tufted headboard is repeated in this space, as are circular side tables. The accessories are a little more grown up, and the ottoman at the end of the bed is a really nice touch. Dani and Dan were the only couple to do a center opening door to their ensuite, making better use of the space behind...see further down for the results.

I love the custom artwork on the wall...nude paintings always work well in a bedroom. I also love the floor skimming sheer curtains they've installed on the french doors. They let in a lovely diffused light into the bedroom, and don't look too heavy for the space. I am not a fan of the big brass lamps on the side table. I can see them getting knocked over very easily. A wall mounted version would have looked fab, and freed up vital space on the small round side tables.

Dani and Dan - ensuite
I love the layout of this ensuite...toilet at one end, shower at the other, and basin in the centre. It is a smart use of space, and allows easy access to all of the facilities. Once again, neutral colours make this an ensuite that won't date in colour in a hurry, however the basin is a worry. The bowl isn't deep enough at all, and there's nowhere to put any of your things while you're using them...hairdryer, straightener, makeup, etc...it's not very practical to be opening the cabinet above all the time. I was disappointed for Dani and Dan that they didn't have enough time to grout the tiles properly, and the sink leaked when the judges went to use it...a combination of the shallow bowl and the tap set way too high. Hopefully they can pull it together for the next reveal.

Mike and Andrew - master bedroom
This week's winners of the room reveal! Once again, the brothers have pulled a smart looking room out of their hat. To me it looks more like a luxury hotel...very inviting, but not for a permanent stay. I'd be frightened to jump on that bed and ruin the hospital corners! Although the side tables are very stylish and fit the space well, I don't find them very practical. There isn't enough space for everything you need beside the bed...a book, alarm clock or phone, glasses, other general crap that accumulates there (lol), etc. The mirror wall feature and agapanthus canvas are lovely too, but I'm not sure they work together.

The timber framed upholstered headboard is lovely, but I think it's the wrong scale for such a grand sized bed. I would have liked it to be a bit taller, so that it fills the space between the headboard and canvas more. It looks a litle understated with the table lamps the same height. A pop of colour on the bed would have been nice too. Perhaps bringing in a bit of the green from the canvas would make the art relate more to the space. Everything else is once again quite masculine. These boys really need to discover their feminine side.

Mike and Andrew - ensuite
This ensuite is lovely. The Stegbar glass walls look amazing and would be super easy to maintain. The sink is in great proportion, and the toilet cistern is set back into the wall, giving the room more space. As the judges pointed out...there's no where to hang your towel! Perhaps they plan on hanging them like my children...on the floor. Overall, the boys were deserving winners, but not my preferred room at the reveal.

Brad and Lara - master bedroom
Saving the best for last! Once again, Brad and Lara have wowed me with their style and practicality. This room feels so warm and inviting, with it's cool colour scheme and pops of aubergine. The oversized winged back chair in the corner adds a little drama and whimsy, and looks like the perfect spot to sit and read, or to pop on your shoes. Although there are no curtains in this room, the automatic blinds look great, and allow plenty of light to fill the space during the day.

Creating a custom headboard/room divider was a brilliant idea! Although there's no space for bedside tables, the cut out in the headboard gives the owner plenty of space to store their essentials while they snooze. How fun is the oversized alarm clock by Salt and Pepper! Where I think Brad and Lara win in this space is the styling. The pillows and throw on the bed make this bed look incredibly welcoming...a stark contrast to the clean lines preferred by the brothers above.

Another feature I love is the addition of a stainless steel ceiling fan. Not only is it practical for those warm Melbourne summers, but I love the juxtaposition of the modern against the restored ceiling rose. I'm so impressed that Brad and Lara have maintained some of the original features of this period townhouse.

Now, here's the serious WOW factor! A walk through robe! There is a massive difference between a built in robe, and walk through wardrobe. It instantly amps up the luxury. Instead of the full length mirror in the centre there, I would have liked to have seen a dressing table connect the two dressers, with a nice chair for the lady of the house to sit and do her makeup and hair. I would kill for a space like this in my own home!

Brad and Lara - ensuite
The judges had a couple of criticisms for Brad and Lara's ensuite, and I think this is where they lost the week. The square tiles on the floor do look a little cheap, and a lot of owner/builders choose this tile. I guess because this is a television show, you expect a little more. A rectangular tile would have looked gorgeous! The other criticism by the judges was that you can't open one of the drawers in the vanity without hitting the ensuite door. A sliding door would have been perfect for this space.

I am loving this year's series of The Block! The couples seem really nice, and the work they've produced so far has been beautiful! I really admire their drive, and I can't wait to see what they deliver next. This coming week looks to be another hell week, with the couples all needing to reveal a guest bedroom and a WC underneath the stairs. It will be interesting to see whether they all do another bedroom with a double/queen sized bed, or whether they'll dress it more for a family. The tight space underneath the stair case will also prove a challenge...how much style can you fit into such a small area? Time will tell...

Here's my take! I love a sketch that uses standard sized photos!! I was digging through some older photos, and came across these two. I had set them aside to do a layout about my cousin's wife's 30th birthday, but I felt these two told a completely different story. Look at that pout! Poor little Seth was upset that his baby sister was getting so much attention from Nanny, Poppy and Aunty Beth. Until she came along, he was always the centre of their attention. Thankfully he got used to sharing...but that sweet little face gets me every time!

For this layout, I used the following WOW product:

12x12 cog frame set C819
mini dragonfly set C1053
classic alphabet lowercase C1385

I have coated all chipboard pieces with markers in colours that coordinate with the patterned papers I've used. I then finished them off with glaze. I have also added liquid pearls around the cog.

Here's another layout that was recently featured on the WOW blog. This photo was taken in December 2011, just two months before Nanna passed away in February this year. I'm so glad we took a photo with her that day. She looks so happy to be surrounded by her grandbabies. This layout just reminds me how much I miss her.

For this layout, I used the following WOW product:

Once again I've coated the chipboard in markers and glaze. I swear, markers are a chipboard fan's greatest tool! Here's a tip...colour your lettering in with marker before removing them from the base, as it's much easier to handle and reduces mess.

5 ideas for displaying your collection

Once you've started your collection, the next step is to figure out how to store it or display it! The amount of space you devote to your collection will depend on what it is you're actually collecting. If you were collecting expensive stamps, you wouldn't just leave them in their packets in the kitchen drawer. You would take the time to purchase a safe stamp storage album, and carefully arrange them inside. The same goes for collections that are on display in your home. It makes sense to display your collection in a way that really makes it a conversation piece in your home. Firstly, remember to:

Use sturdy display shelves or cabinets.
Maintain your collection by cleaning and dusting it regularly.
Keep a breakable collection away from inquisitive little fingers.
Review your collection periodically and remove or dispose of items that no longer suit.

Here's some great ideas for displaying your collections!

1. Make your collection into an art work

You could keep your stamp collection in a standard stamp collector's album...or you could create a piece of art! Obviously, you would need to choose stamps that aren't valuable, but you would still have fun finding enough stamps to fill a frame. This piece really makes a statement, and a great piece of art in the living space, or even your son's bedroom! Choose stamps that have the same colour tones, or the same theme.

2. Use open shelving

Displaying your collection on open shelving makes great economical sense. Opening shelving can be wall mounted (such as the one below), or free standing. Free standing is the perfect option if you are renting, or your collection is a little on the heavy side. The last thing you want is your collection of teapots falling off the wall in the middle of the night! When organising your collection, grouping similar colours together will give your display more visual impact. Resist the temptation to arrange your items in height order...the height variances will add more interest.

3. Use the surfaces of your existing furniture

A cluster of like items will look fantastic displayed on your buffet, sideboard, drinks trolley or shelving. Move your photo frames from on top, and fill the open space with as many items from your collecting that will fit. As with the open shelving idea above, mix up the different heights of your items. In the image below, there are two collections grouped together...world globes on the framed sketches on the wall. Together they make are really interesting display, and they're a definite conversation starter.

4. Repurpose furniture finds

The next time you are out thrifting, or shopping for furniture, try picturing different uses for the pieces you find. Here, an old mail sorting centre because the perfect display case for a collection of cameras. Just a lick of paint was all that was needed to update this piece! Rethink using old crates, pieces of luggage, printers trays to display your collection.

5. Hang it straight on the wall

No need to place everything in a cabinet. If your collection can be wall mounted, group them together to create a really effective wall display...just be sure to use the right hardware!

There are unlimited ways you can display your collection in your home. Just remember to dedicate enough space, and use discretion. As one reader commented in the previous post, it's just as important to know when to stop collecting! Each of the display ideas above work really well, because thought has been given to placement and space. If your collection is starting to take over two complete rooms in your home, then perhaps it's time to pare it back a little.

6 tips for starting a collection...

Many people find a lot of joy in collecting things...whether it be shells from the beach, Christmas ornaments, mason jars or even vintage cars! There are no end of possibilities for what you might collect...you just need to discover what it is you love! When I was a child, it was all about the stuffed toys, postcards and porcelain dolls (which I didn't actually like, but people kept giving them to me as presents). As you grow older your interests may or may not change. There is nothing wrong with a grown woman collecting dolls (Blythe...anyone?). Follow these six tips to get your collection started:

1. Discover what you're passionate about...
Starting a collection can be very exciting...yet a little daunting. It can be a personal pursuit, or perhaps a shared love. Either way, make sure your chosen collection speaks to you. Have a good think about what it is you're drawn too. Chances are, you already have a collection...you just haven't realised it yet.

Is there a particular item that you're always pinning on Pinterest, or perhaps even purchasing?
Group together the like items in your home, and you will discover what it is.
Discuss your new hobby with your partner. The items you collect and display may impede on their personal space and style too.

2. Do some research...

Where can you find your chosen item?
Do you have to save money or set a budget in order to start your collection?
Are you looking to make money from your collection in the future, or is it purely for the joy?
Is there a collectors group or online forum you can join?

3. Good things come to those who wait...
This is where you need to show a little (or a lot) of patience and restraint. A collection is something that develops over time, not purchased in one go. It's a hobby that is to be enjoyed, and not designed to send you to the poor house in the first month. When you are passionate about something, it can be incredibly difficult to resist rushing out and buying every single item that suits your collection. What you may end up with is a house full of clutter, rather than a cohesive grouping of items. Enjoy the collecting process and build your collection up over time.

4. Make discretionary choices...
As I said in point 3 above...it can be very tempting to purchase everything you see. Ask yourself a few questions before you hand over the cash.

Is this item good quality?
Does this item compliment and/or enhance the other items already in my collection?
Will I regret not buying this item?

The majority of times, the answer will be no. Show restraint and put your purse away. Asking yourself these questions will ensure you don't end up with a collection you've settled on, rather than falling in love with.

5. Be prepared to say no...
Once your friends and family find out that you have a collection, they may start "helping" you by adding to it...birthday and Christmas presents, or just because they found it and thought of you. They may have the best of intentions, but their choices may not be exactly what you're looking for. It is okay to say thank you, but no thank you. Take the initiative during these gift giving times and point them in the direction of items you actually want...there's nothing wrong with being fussy. You are the one that is going to have to live with your collection, not your welling meaning relatives.

6. Look after you collection
If you were collecting expensive stamps, you wouldn't just leave them in their packets in the kitchen drawer. You would take the time to purchase a safe stamp storage album, and carefully arrange them inside. The same goes for collections that are on display in your home.

Use sturdy display shelves or cabinets.
Maintain your collection by cleaning and dusting it regularly.
Keep a breakable collection away from inquisitive little fingers.
Review your collection periodically and remove or dispose of items that no longer suit.

The Block | Week 1 round up...

I have long been a fan of The Block and have watched every series. This year proves to be the best yet as four couples renovate the most dilapidated terrace homes I've ever seen!. Last night saw the couples reveal their first rooms, and I sat enthralled, waiting to see what they had created! Most weeks, the couples are decorating the same room type, making it a level playing field. This week, they could make the front rooms fulfill any function...with all four couples taking completely different approaches. A bedroom, sitting room, study and dining space. Check out their fabulous designs...

I think it was incredibly smart for Brad and Lara to add an additional living space for this family home. As a mum of two loud and active children, it's great to have another room in the house to have some time out...and let's face it, there's always some kind of chick flick playing when someone wants to watch the football. This looks like the perfect breakaway family space.

The mirror that Brad and Lara designed for the challenge this week bounces the light around the room beautifully, and the scale of the mirror is just perfect for that wall. I also love how minimally the shelving has been decorated. There's no need to cover every surface for shelves to be beautiful, functional, and balanced.

I only have two criticisms of this room...one, that they didn't include a mantel above the restored fireplace (those tiles were a major find under all of that paint!), and two, the curtains don't touch the floor. This was my favourite room for this week, and I could totally see myself curled up on that chair reading a book or watching a little television. Well done Brad and Lara!

Mike and Andrew's study

If I was decorating this room, I would have done a home office/guest room too. The long desk beneath the window, looking out on to the street is fantastic, and very inspiring for the person who works at home...there's nothing worse than staring at a wall for hours on end. Great shelves next to the desk too so that everything you need is right there when you need it.

The Tiltaway Bed hidden in the centre of the built in wall unit is a great idea for those emergency guests. Simply keep the bed freshly made and push it back up into the wall, freeing up valuable floor space during the day.

The boys were criticised last night for having two very distinct lights in the space. I think they work really nicely together...love the abstract timber pendant and metal floor lamp. The challenge piece designed by the brothers is ah-maze-ing!! I can see this popping up in home decor stores very, very soon. Mike and Andrew have a great eye for design, but I think I'd like to see them discover their feminine side a little. Although that chair is great, an upholstered high backed armchair would add a little softness to the space. I can't wait to see what they do next week!

Sophie and Dale's dining room

I really like this couple, but I'm sorry to say, this is my least favourite room of the week. There are some absolutely fabulous individual moments in the room, such as the sweet buttery coloured buffet unit with blue interior...but as an overall space, it doesn't quite feel finished.

Sophie's mason jar chandelier is so beautiful and right on trend. I love the mix of clear and blue glass, and the industrial feel it gives the space. I also love the exposed brick chimney breast and cluster of mirrors hung above the fireplace. Together, they work so well.

I really feel like this room could have benefited from a patterned floor rug to soften the space...as would have a heavier curtain that brushed the floor. I really like Sophie and Dale's eclectic style, however I think the mismatched chairs were taking their design a little too far, particularly for a dining space. I would have teamed the industrial table with leather chairs along the long the edge, and two statement chairs at the ends. I'm looking forward to seeing their master bedroom and ensuite next week.

Dani and Dan's bedroom

You wouldn't know from looking at these images that this bedroom was inside a period home. This sleek bedroom/study combo was the judge's pick last night. The quality of the work in this room is excellent...Dani and Dan have a great eye for detail. My favourite feature of this room is the wall filled with built in wardrobes and study space. This room would be idea for a teenager.

I see that Brad and Lara either repainted the orange side tables, or built new ones because they are nothing like the ones made in the challenge earlier in the week. The glass table top gives these mdf side tables a little more umph, but they still look a little bit lost beside that big bend. The grey padded headboard, teamed with the black and white chevron quilt cover looks fab! I'm not sure why the judges thought the colourful pillows on the bed didn't work...that pop of colour is just what this room needs!

Here's what I don't understand. Why are all of the contestants buying packet curtains? Custom made curtains that skimmed the floor would have added a lot more elegance to this space. On the whole, this room is beautiful...I just don't know if I would have done a 4th bedroom, knowing how much more space is to be included on the 2nd and 3rd floors of this terrace home.

Yoplait...it's french for...a fun day out!

Not really...don't go and consult your English -> French dictionaries. lol. Yesterday, Eme and I went along to Nuffnang's Yoplait Blogger day out, and we had a lovely time. My sister and nephew came along too, and thankfully she drove because I had no idea where I was! A banner at the entrance of Neilsen Park in Vaucluse told us we'd found the right location...the most gorgeous park right on Sydney Harbour. Cameron started shouting "balloon! balloon!" and sure enough there was! A path bordered by stunning Moreton Bay figs lined with red and white helium balloons led the way. As we got closer, Eme noticed the balloon bunches were tied to tubs of Yoplait yoghurt! Very clever...

We were greeted at the White Pavilion by the lovely Nuffnang staff and given a great bag with a Yoplait picnic blanket, hat and frisbee inside. Yesterday was the perfect day for a picnic, and the grassed hill beside the pavilion offered the perfect view of the water. Eme had different ideas though...she spied the plaster craft stand and she was off! Out of all of the choices available, she made a beeline for the plaster kitties in a basket (of course!). She then picked out a "love" sign and set to work painting that one too! I'm sure she would have sat there all day if I'd let her. Next up, she made friends with the girls at the bead making stand, making a colourful necklace for herself and a bracelet for both her and I.

What's a great day out, without balloons??! The balloon artist was so clever, whipping up flowers, swords, animals and hats for all the ~~big~~ kids. Meanwhile, Cami had fun running around the pavilion and playing outside kicking a ball around...and painting too, especially Beth's top. lol.

The Nuffnang team thought of everything. I'm pretty sure yesterday was the equivalent of the best day ever for Emeline. She asked the face painter to decorate her face with a colourful butterfly, and she sat there so patiently while the painter got to work...adding pretty frangipanis to the butterfly to match her headband.

I was next, and had some orange blossoms painted across my face (to match my outfit of course!). Unfortunately it got a bit smudged by my balloon hat. lol. I love face painting! I even had a face painter at my 30th birthday...might have to have another one for my 40th in a couple of years...

We were treated to plenty of Yoplait yoghurt, french crepes and a great lunch bag with baguette, croissant and fruit. Perfect. Eme practically inhaled a tub of vanilla yoghurt, bar one spoonful that she allowed me to taste...it was delicious and there were actual vanilla seeds in there. The blackberry flavour was yum too!

All too soon, it was time to head home, back along the balloon lined path...with Eme pushing Cameron's pram all the way. A big thanks to Nuffnang and Yoplait for a great day out! Their advertising must have worked, because Eme put Yoplait in the shopping trolley today. I don't mind...it's tasty and healthy, and a good serve of dairy for the school lunch box. Who said children weren't susceptible to good marketing?

The tooth fairy needs to update her records!

Last night, the tooth fairy had cause to visit the Warren household. For weeks, Eme's front tooth has been getting wobblier and wobblier...with a bit of help from Eme and I. Yesterday, I maintained my record of physically pulling out 100% of the children's wobbly teeth (gross I know...there was only a little bit of blood). The kids are always shocked when they first realise that it's out, then a gappy smile comes over their face when they remember that they'll be all cashed up the next day!

In our house, the tooth fairy isn't overly generous...$5 for the first tooth, and a gold coin for every tooth after that. Not too shabby. I remember getting somewhere between 20c-50c when I was child. That's inflation for you!

So, onto our tradition. Seth and Eme both have a little container that they use to house their tooth so that the Tooth Fairy can find it. The Tooth Fairy takes the tooth, and in exchange leaves a shiny gold coin. Just one problem...Eme had taken her container up to the grandparents house last week just in case her tooth came out...and she forgot to bring it home! Eme was a little upset, so I texted Nanny to let her know. In the meantime, Eme found a different container to use, so in went her tooth to wait for last night's visit.

This morning, Eme was delighted to find out that the Tooth Fairy delivered twice! Once at our house and again at the grandparents. Lucky girl. I think I might have to talk to this Tooth Fairy...she's going to send us all broke. lol.

The last time she was scheduled to come to our house for Seth, she forgot. Ooops...major tooth fairy faux pas. A quick call to granny indicated that she had in fact left $2 at their place because that's where he lost the previous tooth. Then...Eme loses a tooth the next day...and the Tooth Fairy had better remember because the kids would seriously lose their shizz. Thankfully, a reminder was set in the Tooth Fairy's diary, and not only did she remember, but she gave Seth an extra $2 to say sorry. That was an expensive week! lol.

Here at the Warren house, I am making plans to furnish and decorate our front living room. It's going to be a big job to clear it out. Unfortunately it's become one of those rooms that everything that doesn't currently have a home, gets dumped there. A few years ago, hubby painted it the colours I chose...a dirty beige with a rust red feature wall. I don't know what I was thinking. I really do prefer cool colours. I have in my mind a colour scheme of pale grey, yellow, white, cream and maybe a pop of teal. Whenever I think of sitting in there, this song comes to mind...

Jewellery organisation...keep it simple

A couple of weeks ago, I played along with Fox In Flat's Arm Party Dare. I had so much fun wearing all of my costume jewellery that week, and rediscovering pieces that I forgot I even had! My jewels looked so pretty on my arm, but at the end of the day, I was just throwing them in a pile...completely disorganised. They've always been this way, and often I can't find the one thing I want to wear. It drives me mental every single morning. It's not just bracelets...there's rings, earrings and necklaces to contend with too. What's a girl to do?

I am in the middle of reorganising our walk in wardrobe. It's a small triangular shaped room, which currently has barely enough room for our clothes. With some careful planning, I have managed to move around the clothes rails to fit in a chest of drawers. On top will be my accessory centre. lol. I have been searching Pinterest for jewellery storage inspiration (as you do)...and here are a few favourites...

There were so many choices! I was toying with the idea of making something beautiful to display all of my pretties, but let's face it...I don't have the time. There are plenty of ready made options available on the market, so why reinvent the wheel (so to speak). I found this velvet bracelet/watch display system on ebay for less than $20. Why would I bother making it myself? I made the purchase, and it was delivered within a couple of days. I don't think it could have been any easier.

Here's all of my pretties on display. There was a three tiered display unit available, and I'm kicking myself now that I didn't get that one instead. Mind you...do I really need any more bracelets? Stupid question...of course I do! lol. Sadly, I'm fairly sure that some are missing. Once I finish reorganising, they'll turn up.

I love how organised they are now, and I can see exactly what I've got. The roll lifts out of the holder, and the bracelets slide off...making it super easy to use.

This system works for me because it's simple, it's practical and it's compact. When it comes to organisation, for me, the simpler the better. I know I can maintain this. I can't wait until the rest of my costume jewellery is organised...no more tangled necklaces!!

Scrapbooking Sunday | Titles and frames

If you struggle to create titles for your layouts, then Words or Whatever's ready made chipboard titles are the product for you! There is a huge selection to choose from, so you're bound to find one that suits your layout to a tee.

Here I have used WOW's "I love you infinity" chipboard title. I was thrilled when I found this one in WOW's title collection. Seth and I have this conversation all the time about who loves who more. It started with Seth saying "I love you", to which I replied "I love you too". Then one night he had to one up me with "I love you three". lol...and so it continued, until we got up to infinity. That's a lot! lol.

I have coated the title in markers that coordinated with the patterned papers I was using. To define the area where the "f" crossed over, I scored the outline of the letter with a craft knife.

WOW also have a huge range of school chipboard titles, making those school layouts a snap! Here I've documented Eme's first day of school. I remember my kindy girl looking so tiny in her uniform, with her backpack coming half way down her legs. For the colour scheme, I have steered clear of the blue and white...there'll be plenty of years for that...instead, drawing inspiration from her backpack (that coincidentally had to be returned after 3 days of use due to a hole...grrrr).

Once again I have used markers to coat the title, then added a little softness to the chipboard flower by layering a satin flower underneath. A resin brad fixed through the centre adds even more dimension.

Last but not least, I challenged myself to create a layout to showcase last year's Santa photo. This was no ordinary Santa...but the Santa from the QVB, Sydney, who was sitting in the most gorgeous Christmas cave surrounded by Swarovski crystals. There was no way I could use the traditional red and green.

I have coated the entire frame using Martha Stewart's glitter glues, in hues I pulled out of the photo's background. Once dry, I attached decorative leaf lace to replicate a Christmas wreath, then wrapped a strand of pearls around for a little whimsy. A mountain of flowers finish off the layout.

Logies...fabulous fashions and faux pas...

I love the Logies...the glitz, the glamour, the really bad puns...it's all good. Last night was probably one of the best and worst Logies I've seen to date...and yes, I watch it every year! I loved the fact that there wasn't one particular host. I felt that the show ran so much smoother, and there were no awkward hosting moments at all. The worst...running over time...again! Oh, and finding out who won the gold a good hour before it was televised (congrats to Hamish Blake!). Of course, the main reason to watch the Logies is to check out the gorgeous (and some not so gorgeous) frocks worn by Australia's favourite stars. Here's my picks for this year...

Fashion favourites on the night...

Delta Goodrem

I thought Delta look absolutely flawless last night...stunning frock, makeup, hair and minimal accessories. This woman is a goddess and has the dress to prove it! I love that Delta doesn't feel the need to show all her goodies like some startlets and she looks completely confident. Love.

Asher Keddie
Sleek and sophisticated in every way. Sheer gowns were very popular last night, and Asher pulls it off the best! This J'Aton dress is a masterpiece, with details in all the right places, and subtle pops of yellow on white really make this dress.

Jennifer Hawkins

Only Jennifer could get away with wearing a slit so high...she's definitely got the legs for it! I love the teal dress with the coral heels, and colourful accessories. This whole outfit and the casual hairstyle just scream fun, fun, fun. She's exactly what the red carpet needed last night. I'm just thankful there weren't any Angelina Jolie leg popping moments.

Shelley Craft

Dressing for the red carpet whilst pregnant must be one of the most stressful moments a starlet can face. Shelley proved that your bump is your best accessory. This simple black dress is pushed over the top with the emerald green neck details. The blunt fringe and pulled back hair compliment this dress to the max.

Kate Ritchie

Kate looks better and better every year! This silhouette is perfect for her figure, hugging her in all the right places. I love the mini satin belt breaking this navy sequined gown at the waist, and the simple accessories and hair. Just beautiful.

Lisa Wilkinson

This one may be a little controversial, but I have to say, this green gown is gorgeous! I love that Lisa always selects dresses that are a little out of the norm...setting the trend, rather than following it. This dress flows beautifully from the waist, and the halter neck suits her perfectly. In my humble opinion, she never gets it wrong, whether it's on the red carpet or on the Today Show.

Fashion faux pas...oh dear...

Yumi Stynes

The Logies mullet dress. Someone please end this trend now!! I know that Yumi is a little quirky and her style reflects that...but I know she can do so much better. This frock does nothing for her. Perhaps if you cut the back off, or make the skirt plunge to the floor, it might have saved it, but no. An opened toe shoe would have looked better too.

Sandra Sully

I am shocked at Sandra's choice this year! She normally looks so incredibly stylish. This dress doesn't look like it fits her properly through the middle, and the sequinned pattern is too overwhelming for it. I think an upstyle would have been more flattering for her too. I hope she can redeem herself next year.

Terry Irwin

Has Terry raided Bindi's wardrobe? This dress is all wrong for her! There comes a point in your life when you have to wear your dresses a bit longer, and cover up the knees. Mid calf would have been perfect for her...as would a nice up "do". It looks like she hasn't made much of an effort at all.

Kat Stewart

This one has me torn. I love the top half of this sheer dress, but the bottom half is all wrong! The length of the hem at the front, and the band on the hem just cheapens would could have been an absolute show stopper! This would have looked fabulous either as a floor skimming gown, or a mini. So close...

Men's style file...

If you've seen one black tuxedo, you've seen them all!

One Direction

One cannot talk about the 2012 Logies without mentioning One Direction. I love that these Brit boys avoided the traditional black tux and kept it young and fresh in shades of blue and grey. Well done boys! Teenage girls around the country were right to scream out...you have serious style!

Guy Sebastian

Clearly the winner of best dressed male on the night, and dare I say it, the most stylish Australian male at the moment! Guy kept his cool in this three piece midnight blue slim fit suit. He put all of the other men on the red carpet to shame!

Seal

Lending serious star style to the red carpet was Seal in this white number. Only he could pull off a white suit with white shoes! Love the satin detail down the sides of the trousers, and love that he went sans tie. Seal rocked the Logies this year.

In the marketplace...guilt free food

Are you suffering from that post Easter "blurgh" feeling from eating too many hot cross buns and chocolate eggs? Me too. Add in the cold snap, and the desire to eat comfort food, and I'm feeling all kinds of stodginess. It's time to be accountable for what goes in my mouth, so that the winter spread doesn't kick in. For me, that means...a healthy start to the day, a healthy snack, and a healthy meals for lunch and dinner. Here's a few products new to the market that will help keep the diet interesting...

Table of Plenty - Nicely Nutty Muesli
I love muesli, but I'm not a big fan of dried fruits...at all. Table of Plenty have been listening to their customers' demands for a fruit free muesli, and have added Nicely Nutty muesli to their product collection!

Nicely Nutty Muesli is seriously delicious. The mini clusters are full of whole rolled oats, almonds, cashews and seeds, oven baked with Table of Plenty’s signature vanilla recipe. I have tried it with milk and with natural yoghurt, and it is yummy either way. The kids prefer it with milk poured over the top, while hubby and I have been eating it sprinkled over natural yoghurt with some berries...so good! I take my breakfast to work, and the mini clusters stay nice and crunchy until I'm ready to eat.

Ajita's Vege Twists
I hate packing the kids lunchboxes for school, and often give them the same few things every single time. Carrot sticks for munch n' crunch, a piece of fruit for morning tea, and a sandwich of some sort for lunch. Exciting isn't it! They must love opening their lunchboxes every day...not!

Sometimes I like to treat them, but given that our school is egg and nut free, there aren't a lot of quick and easy things I can throw in there. We recently tried Vege Twists, and they were an instant hit with the kids! They look like a regular cheese twist, but have 80% less saturated fat than regular potato chips, making them a great alternative to other salty snacks. Seth and Eme loved them! In the kids eyes, I'm awesome for giving them chips, and I'm relieved of the mother guilt because I know they're not as bad for them! Win, win.

SlimPasta
If you ask my daughter what she wants for dinner, the answer is always pasta! She doesn't always get what she wants. Many people eat a lot of pasta because it's a cheap addition to your meals...but it's not that great for the waistline...until now!

SlimPasta have released two new pastas onto the market that will take away the guilt! SlimPasta is made from an Asian vegetable, Konjac, and is currently available in Angel Hair and Spaghetti varieties.

Both products are dairy, egg and fat-free, so it's ideal for children with dairy and egg allergies. The Angel Hair variety is 100% gluten free...great news for coeliac sufferers! SlimPasta's Spaghetti contains a low level of gluten (4.2mg per 100g).

In terms of calories, 100g of Angel Hair SlimPasta contains only 6.4 calories, while the Spaghetti variety contains 14.1 calories (only one minute on the treadmill). The calorie content for most other spaghetti varieties on the market are around 350 cal per 100g, making SlimPasta a great alternative. SlimPasta also expands in your stomach to leave you feeling full for longer...so need to worry about blowing your calorie count for the day, because you won't need a second helping.

We have tried both the spaghetti and angel hair varieties, and they were quite tasty. I think the flavour of it lends itself really well to Asian dishes more than Italian (perhaps the problem lies with of my bolognaise making skills, rather than the pasta. lol). SlimPasta has a slightly different taste and texture to regular pasta, but it's definitely worth a try. The kids absolutely loved it, and they didn't even notice that we'd substituted pastas...and for once we didn't have to scream at them to eat their dinner!

Style Dare | The Arm Party...

Last week, Fox in Flats, through down her stylish gauntlet and dared her readers to throw the mother of all arm parties! I haven't joined in any of the style dares...until now. I may or may not, have enough accessories to open my own store, so this dare was perfect for me!! I rocked that party like it was 1999, and loaded up my wrist every day with all of my colourful jewels (plastic or otherwise. lol). If you think this is a lot...you should see my necklace, earring and cocktail ring collections!! Here's how I arm partied...

Day One - Monday Blues

Day Two - Office Orange

Day Three - The Bumblebee

Day Four - Rockin' Red

Not to be left out...Eme grabbed some of her accessories and joined in the party too! You may recognise the pink bling crocheted number I wore on Day 6..."we" like to share. :-)
