I’m so excited for the long weekend! We’ll be going to the Bronx Zoo, visiting the lions and elephants. I hope theres a zebra or two! I haven’t been to the Bronx Zoo in years, I’m really excited for this fun, weekend adventure. But before I visit the animals I want to share one of the pieces I saw at ICFF on Sunday, and recap the week. I have seen so many gorgeous new things I’m dying to tell you about them. This dramatic Jimmie Martin floor lamp is a statement piece, and it stopped me in my tracks. What do you think of it?

While I pride myself on being familiar with NYC design stores, there are always a few I haven’t made it to yet. Lucky for me Traditional Home and Hunter Douglas partnered with Nina Freudenberger of Haus Interior to create a Nolita walking tour. (I recently featured one of Nina’s projects on Design Crush Mondays!) The tour was correctly labeled “A Morning Of Design Inspiration”. I walked away with my mind going in several directions! Here are a few of the stops we made on our walking tour last week.

Holland & Sherry Bespoke

I was thrilled when I heard Holland & Sherry was opening a retail store right in my backyard! This was a great opportunity to step inside and see their new digs. The shop and design studio is located behind the amazing Elizabeth Street Gallery, which continues into the outdoor space you see when walking past.

Holland & Sherry Bespoke is like a modern man cave heaven, with shaving brushes, large horses and much of their signature fabric. Designers are encouraged to come and hang out, sit at the back conference tables and invite clients over for meeting and bespoke cocktails. Now that I’ve gotten to know the comfortable space I’ll definitely be using this feature!

Craig Van Den Brulle

Just down the street from Holland & Sherry Bespoke you’ll find the glistening Craig Van Den Brulle shop. The flagship store is filled with luxury pieces including show stopping lighting. My favorite, however, was the crazy artwork! I’m very picky about paintings but I was immediately drawn to every piece in the store. If you’re in the area you must stop by!

Aero by Thomas O’Brien

Now, I’ve visited Aero in the past but not recently. The shop was filled with Thomas O’Brien classics including furniture, lighting and accessories. It was a treat to visit the store with this group because we were able to tour the design office downstairs! I love seeing how designers set up their offices, how they stay organized and how they work. This was a quick glimpse into Aero Studios that was very interesting! I can’t tell you what they’re working on right now but I can tell you to stay tuned, lots of fabulous stuff coming up soon!

Ochre

Ochre is another one of my go-to shops. I recently wrote about their sister store, Canvas, which is also amazing. I’m a fan of their tabletop pieces which are very luxe. On this tour however, I couldn’t get over the lighting!

John Houshmand

After visiting John Houshmand I’m now trying to figure out how to visit their upstate location where they source their wood. John Houshmand not only makes custom wood pieces they also hand pick each piece of wood and create pieces in unique ways. I haven’t met many woodworkers that are comfortable mixing materials such as wood, concrete, metals and resins. I was amazed!

Michele Varian

This was my first visit to Michele Varian’s store on Howard Street. Half of the store is filled with curated pieces picked by Michele while the other half, like pillows and wallcovering, were designed by Michele herself. Michele has a fabulous eye and everything she has brought into the store tells a story. I wanted to buy something but because everything’s so great I had trouble deciding! That just means I’ll have to go back!

We also visited Ankasa, which I’ve recently written about so I didn’t take any pictures. Pop over to Confessions of a Design Geek to see a few shots. The tour ended with a delicious (and healthy!) lunch at The Butcher’s Daughter, which has also been on my list to visit. The food was delicious and the green juice was amazing! I’ll be getting my next juice cleanse from here! I’m glad Nina picked these great places that I had already been meaning to go to! Thanks Nina, Traditional Home and Hunter Douglas for the great experience!

Today I’ll be sorting through photographs from two weeks of design events but I had to stop in and share some fantastic news. I never really win anything, but then again who does?! Yesterday I found out that I’m the winner of Global Lighting’s #WantedLight instagram competition!

Friday I attended Wanted Design’s Blogger’s First Look. This year was Wanted’s third annual show which featured many fresh, new designs that I was thrilled to see. (More on that later!) As part of the Bloggers First Look we were encouraged to photograph and instagram four Global lights hanging throughout the space. Lucky for me the LZF Mini Mikado light is pretty easy to photograph! Because of the molded wood veneer strips the pendant throws dramatic light in different directions while creating an interesting silhouette. My handy iPhone captured some of that drama and I (luckily) won the light!

Stay tuned, I’m in the process of figuring out where to install this beauty. You’ll obviously be the first to know! Thanks so much Global Lighting and Wanted!

Ghislane Vinas is one of my favorite Manhattan interior designers. Her style is bold and fun, and she keeps you on your toes! You never know what to expect when walking into a Ghislane Vinas home but you know it will have a striking point of view. This week’s Design Crush won Interior Design Magazine’s 2010 Best of Year Award for Urban Residential Interiors. Congrats Ghislane!

There are only a handful of designers that are comfortable using large amounts of color. When using bright, bold colors in a space you have to know when to tone it down and when to really go for it. This Tribeca home is a great example of color done brilliantly!

Although the majority of the home is saturated in color the dining room and living room are in mostly black and white with pops of color throughout. From the living room you can see bright yellows and reds in the adjacent area, which softens the black and makes the room much less stark than expected.

I admire Ghislane’s use of scale throughout her homes. When looking at these rooms you can see large pendant lights and chandeliers that take over the room but are not overbearing. These light fixtures look purposeful, and are definitely not an afterthought!

In addition to Ghislane’s use of color and scale she also adds playfulness to her homes. The sheep in the room below are unexpected but not out of place. Her use of shapes and objects add another element of surprise to the space.

Happy Friday! As you can see by my instagram and twitter stream, there’s a lot going on here in New York! May is one of the busiest months for designers. We’re hopping from Spring Market at the D&D Building, to ICFF, to Blogfest! Wednesday night Traditional Home and Hunter Douglas hosted a fabulous event at the Desiron showroom. As usual it was one of the best events, with amazing food and drinks. This party was extra special. There was a photobooth with a shimmery glittery backdrop! Sarah Sarna and I played around with a few Great Gatsby inspired accessories and took a few pictures. So fun!

As the weather is getting warmer I’m craving more outdoor time. I wish I had a balcony or rooftop access! I’d love to create a little garden sanctuary in my future garden. I feel like it would be the perfect escape, right at my fingertips. Do you have outdoor space? Do you utilize it to the fullest? So many of us take what we have for granted. If you have the space I hope you’re using it!

While thinking of my future garden I put together a few gardening items that I’d love to have. If you’re redoing your outdoors you may love these things too. Here are this week’s Design Spotlights: All About The Garden!

I’ve been keeping a little secret from you and I’m finally able to let you in on it! A few months ago Bosch told me and a few other designers and bloggers about their latest line with some awesome features. Today Bosch is revealing their new line, so I’m able to share everything with you!

Bosch has been known for their quite dishwashers for quite some time now. Their latest line, Bosch 800, is officially the quietest dishwasher in North America. The new line is also available with four different handles as well as an option for an integrated panel, so the dishwasher can seamlessly fit into any custom kitchen.

Aside from the new, super quiet feature, there was another detail that stole my heart. Bosch’s new dishwasher has a third rack! The third rack allows you to load 30% more than a typical two-rack dishwasher. The third rack is also V-shaped, making room for long-stemmed wine glasses and other taller items. The third rack is also height adjustable, so you can adjust it to fit your needs.

Of course there are other cool features like the HD color display touch control and deeper tub. Also included is a water softener, which reduces the chances of lime deposits. I was very impressed with the Bosch 800 series when I saw it in person. Are you looking for a new dishwasher? What features are most important to you? Are you in awe of the third rack like I am?!

It’s that time of year again! Tomorrow is Spring Market at the D&D Building here in New York. It’s one of the most exciting days of the year for us designers. The entire building is filled with events, showcasing new products and highlighting designers. I’m honored to be chosen for the Spring Market Bloggers Lounge this year! I’ll be live tweeting all day, as I hop from showroom to showroom checking out the latest and greatest. (I’ll be instagraming too!)

Our day kicks off at Donghia, with a keynote speech by Traditional Home’s Editor In Chief Ann Maine. We’ll also be able to create our own fragrance and taste custom blended tea!
I have a soft spot for stationery. I love notebooks, cards, colorful pens and pencils, just about everything! When looking for cards for friends and family I always choose funny over sentimental. I don’t like to get super emotional on birthday cards and things like that. Funny goes a long way! My first stop when looking for really funny cards is Wit & Whistle. (They have a lot more than cards by the way but I’ve been banned from buying any other form of stationery). Amanda Wright is the creator of Wit & Whistle and the woman behind the witty cards. Today, Amanda has agreed to answer a few questions for us about how she got started and where she’s going.

TR: Tell Life in Sketch readers a bit about yourself. How did you get started in illustration?

AW: I’ve been drawing ever since I was little. I took every art class I could in school and focused on fine art through high school. I majored in Graphic Design at the NCSU College of Design, because I was afraid of becoming a starving artist. After graduating I worked at a design firm for three years before deciding I needed a bit more creative freedom than my clients usually allowed. My awesome husband encouraged me to find a career I could love, so I quit my job and started Wit & Whistle.

TR: How did you turn your self-proclaimed design nerdiness (and talent) into a career?

AW: While still at my day job I decided that I wanted to start a small business that would nurture my creativity. Initially I wanted to make jewelry. I took a few silversmithing classes but realized that I lacked the attention span jewelry making required. I’d make one earring and then I’d have no desire to make the exact same thing again for the other ear! After making a bunch of single earrings I realized that I should put my hard earned graphic design degree to use in my new business venture. I started designing and illustrating greeting cards, and when I opened my shop on Etsy and it slowly started to take off.

TR: How long have you owned the Wit and Whistle shop?

AW: I opened Wit & Whistle in July of 2009, although I was tinkering around with card designs for 7 or 8 months before that trying to pinpoint my niche.

TR: How would you describe your design aesthetic?

AW: Clean, simple, and organic

TR: I’m a huge fan of your work, and buy one of your cards for almost every holiday. How would you describe your design process?

AW: Aww, thanks! I mostly just sit around with my sketchbook jotting ideas and sketching thumbnails. I come up with a lot of terrible ideas in the process, but I keep them all. Sometimes when I read through the bad ideas later a good idea will present itself. When I can picture the design I want to make in my head, I’ll draw it in my sketchbook in ink. Then I scan the ink drawing into my computer and add color digitally. From there I either print it myself or send the file to the local printer I work with to have them print up a bunch for me.

TR: Where do you turn when you’re having an off day / looking for inspiration?

AW: When I’m feeling creatively drained the best thing for me to do is to step away and work on something else for the day. I have an endless list of projects I want to get done around our 1971 home, I might try a new recipe, or I’ll wander around with my camera snapping photos for my blog. If I can just accomplish something I start feeling productive and inspired again, so I can return to my work refreshed and ready to create.

TR: What designers, artists and/or illustrators do you look up to and admire / turn to for inspiration?

AW: I’ve always admired Rifle Paper Co. (who doesn’t?), because Anna Bond has developed such a recognizable brand. I’m striving to make Wit & Whistle’s branding that strong and identifiable. I’m not quite there yet, but I get closer every day. Lately I’ve also been crushing on Molly Jacques’ beautiful lettering and calligraphy. Someone should name her Queen of the Alphabet!

For inspiration I usually turn to blogs. Holly Becker’s blog, Decor8 (http://decor8blog.com), inspired me to open my own Etsy shop in the first place. She regularly did an “Etsy Take 5 Tuesday” feature back in 2008/9, and I was so motivated by seeing other’s successful Etsy shops each week. I kept thinking to myself “I think I could do that,” and I finally jumped in and set to work.

TR: What’s next for Wit and Whistle?

AW: I’m planning to add some notepads and spiral bound journals to my shop this year. I also hope to expand my line of art prints and even try selling a few original ink drawings and paintings.

Thanks Amanda for speaking to us!

I love Amanda’s story. I love when people go after their dreams! Amanda’s talent shines through her work and her passion is easy to see. You can see more of her work at Wit & Whistle.

The first time I visited Barcelona was three and a half years ago on my honeymoon. We only had a few days because of the time off we took for the wedding so we didn’t get to experience all of Barcelona. We had a fabulous time but I’m really hoping to go back soon and see (and eat) more. One restaurant I’d like to visit is Big Fish – Borne, designed by Lazaro Rosa-Violan. The space is an interesting mix of furniture styles and materials. I have a huge Design Crush on it!

While the ceiling and walls are white and bright, the floors and furniture are in grey and brown tones anchoring the space. The painted brick walls bring in a warm, loft-like look. Louvered doors are installed to cover lit columns which adds additional texture to the space.

Typically spaces have similar lights or a number of variations of the same light. Big Fish – Borne is unusual because each hanging light is different, creating a different scene each way you look.

The paneling combined with textured glass behind the kitchen counter creates and inviting environment. It has a traditional look with a modern twist, because of the amount of white used.

I love a restaurant with a sofa! It makes the space so much more cozy!

While the bathrooms are small they appear larger because of the use off mirrors. The mirrors also make the bathroom look quite glamorous!

Happy Monday. Hope this beautiful space kicks off your week nicely!
