I spent this weekend catching up on animation movies that I've always enjoyed - Beauty and the Beast and Anastasia. NST and I also booked our tickets to Phantom of the Opera, our second experience of this musical, VIP style this time round!

I realized I really enjoy musicals and animation movies. I figure it has got to be the music, the singing and the emotions that those carefully crafted words elicit that draw me. In animation, the facial expression on the characters are never going to be as authentic as what you would perceive in real life. In musicals, you might not be seated near enough to capture the emotions portrayed on stage. What captures our imagination is thus the voice and the words that are spoken, or the songs that are sung. The singing often begins when the emotions are at its peak, when one is loneliest, saddest, happiest or most determined. The singing amplifies what spoken words are trying to convey, and tells us things that words cannot express.

It is the same with writing (and blogging). I've been lacking inspiration the past few years in blogging but recently a surge of quiet courage comes back to me, like the gentle rain that greets the dry earth (and it is drizzling as I type this :) I feel like expressing myself in words again. So I hope you who are reading this would find beauty in some of the words that I might occasionally express in this journal of mine. Here's a song that I've been listening to this week :)

Inspired by Streetsy: 40+ Street artists You Should Know Besides Banksy, I sieved through 1,761 photos taken during Fall 2007, to put together this set of streetart pics that I took in Europe. I might not know the names of the artists, but their artworks sure made the streets and allies of the cities I'd been to, come alive and a lot more memorable.

I came across twistori today and it's really cool! Essentially, it captures the emotions going around the twittersphere via the key words: love, hate, think, believe, feel & wish. Mac users can even get it as a wallpaper. Such mashups are what make twitter and web 2.0 so addictive and fun!

I'm a MAC but these PC ads ain't too bad.

I got to say that this new series of re-branding ads from Microsoft is pretty good. They try hard to change people's stereotype that all the cool funky people are in the MacWorld (which is true), and the rest of the world are PC. Well of course this is NOT going to make me ever want to go back to being a PC, but I think from the branding perspective this is good effort. One would think it would be such a tough job retaliating against those really funny & cool I'm a Mac/I'm a PC ads, but hey, this is not too bad, PC.

I don't usually drink coffee, and the day I did a couple of days back, I spilled it over my tablet PC. That marks the end of my relationship with Windows and I'm embracing the MacWorld with lots of joy and excitement. It's awesome that the SMU Mac community is so friendly and helpful and it took me nothing to configure everything.

FYI Purple is my favorite color, for some reasons. That is why I have to say that when Yahoo starts bleeding purple, I'm really happy. Check out Yahoo's Start Wearing Purple campaign.

Samantha is single again! Yes, I'm quite glad that she doesn't have the Cinderella-Happily-Ever-After ending, because that is just so not Samantha. I love the fact that Samantha doesn't compromise and be what someone wants her to be; instead, she recognises and respects who she really is. And I suppose this is a delicate struggle of balance that we all face at some points of our lives.

The Miranda-Steve Brooklyn Bridge scene. I must say that despite me being a woman, I kinda sympathise with Steve more than Miranda, even though the former had a one night stand. I suppose when things go wrong it's easier to blame it on the catalyst alone, but clearly Miranda's "let's get it over and done with" attitude (towards sex & other stuff) is a contributing factor. Nonetheless, I really love the concept of them meeting half way between Manhattan and Brooklyn. And because I've walked back and forth on the Brooklyn Bridge before, the scene just sticked and meant more in my heart.

Lily. She's the pretty Chinese adopted daughter of Charlotte. Absolutely adorable and sweet.

Sushi! HAHA this has to be the sexiest and most hilarious scene of them all! Samantha lie on the tabletop naked and covered with Sushi is just classic Samantha material. 50 & Fabulous!

Forgiveness. The running theme of the movie. The heart of the matter.

Mr. Big got Carried away again. Once again, Mr. Big never fails to come in and shit all over when Carrie is at her happiest. Not that it's completely his fault; Carrie forgets how tough it is for him to go through his 3rd marriage while she goes through her 1st, at 40. Difficult situation for both, but I'm relieved that they made it through, really.

It's been a week since I started my internship at the place where it's not about the bulls, not the bears either, but just the facts. New friends, new learning points, new perspectives. I love all things new, most of the time. Being at a brand new place is always cool because the freshness of meeting new people and excitement of learning how things work, keep the adrenaline and brain juice pumping.

Intellectual stimulation aside, let me dedicate this long overdue post to a topic that some say, makes the world go round: LOVE. I really like this article in NYT by Marguerite Fields, written for the purpose of the NYT's Modern Love College Essay Contest. She's the winning entry and I'm not surprised at all. Her main thesis can be roughly summed up to be: noncommittal is what modern love is all about. What I really like about it is the nice touch that lies in the following idea embedded in the words below.

So when my friends and I started having a conversation about the nature of monogamy, I thought I knew something about monogamy. Because, despite the fleeting nature of most of my encounters, and despite my own role in their short duration, I think what I have been seeking in some form from all of these men is permanence.
Sometimes I don’t like them, or am scared of them, and a lot of times I’m just bored by them. But my fear or dislike or boredom never seems to diminish my underlying desire for a guy to stay, or at least to say he is going to stay, for a very long time.
And even when I don’t want him to stay — even when he and I find each other as strangers and remain strangers until we stop doing whatever it is we are doing — I still want to believe that two people can meet and like each other well enough to stay together exclusively, without the introduction of some 1960s rhetoric about free love or other noncommittal slogans.

I like it cos' I think every now and then, we all need someone to forgive us, and we all need to do a little forgiving for others, not so much as an ideal to save the world or anything noble along that line, but simply, for ourselves to feel happier. It doesn't have to be just love, or romance, it can be even about friendship and kinship.

On a lighter note, May and June are going to be busy but very exciting months for me and my family! As the beloved sis' wedding draws nearer, and as my Ah Ma gets healthier, I couldn't help but feel, nothing beats having a happy, loving family :)

The origins of Pei

Names are fascinating and I'm always keen to find out about the origins of names and etymology. I love my Chinese name and despite the fact that it's mispronounced at times and having an English name would make things easier for some people to remember me, I can't bear to call myself by any other name other than, PEI.

This character vaguely means "to nurture" but it's not so much the nurturing aspect that landed me with this name. Apparently, amongst the 5 elements, I'm lacking quite a bit on the earth element (Chinese: 土). Hence the solution for me to being more balanced was to have some earth element embedded within my name. As you can see, the left hand side of my name has 土 in it, and I guess amongst all the Chinese characters with a 土 in it, my parents love this one the most and so do I. And just like that, 22 years back, began the Life of Pei!

Man , I was mad and it felt ominous to have 2 black birds in your house. But one of the wittiest men on earth told me that in ancient Hawaiian folklore 2 crows means I will find true love. That prompted me to check out the mythology associated with these birds and here's some interesting information I found.

In Buddhism, the Dharmapala (protector of the Dharma) Mahakala is represented by a crow in one of his physical/earthly forms. Avalokiteśvara Chenrezig, who is reincarnated on Earth as the Dalai Lama, is often closely associated with the crow because it is said that when the first Dalai Lama was born, robbers attacked the family home. The parents fled and were unable to get to the infant Lama in time. When they returned the next morning expecting the worst, they found their home untouched, and a pair of crows were caring for the Dalai Lama. It is believed that crows heralded the birth of the First, Seventh, Eighth, Twelfth and Fourteenth Lamas, the latter being the current Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso.

Norse mythology depicted the wisest of the gods as having two crows, one sitting on each shoulder. These ravens' names were Hugin, meaning Thought, and Munin, meaning memory. They would fly each day through out the world and tell Odin of everything that men do. It was said that instead of eating with the other gods, Odin would give his food to two monstrous wolves that sat on each side of him. He would spend his dinner instead pondering the things that his ravens told him.

And here's a poem, A Gathering of Crows, which totally affirms that the Hawaiian folklore might really be true :)
