Sunday we explored Acts 4, along with Psalm 118, and Isaiah 28:14-19.

Psalm 118 gave us a glimpse into the healthy Christian Heart, Isaiah gave us a look at the rebellious non-believing heart. We learned how having Jesus as the Cornerstone is the one way to survive the coming judgment. The shelters of lies we use to numb the sting of death will be washed away, and Jesus, the cornerstone will be all that lasts.

John Chapter 19 was an adventure. We got to examine the exclamation "We have no king but Caesar" and look at what kind of king Caesar was, and what kind of King Jesus is.

John 17 - The Restoration

John 17 is all about the Jesus praying for the restoration of our intended relationship with him. We were created for an intimate, deep relationship with the Trinity and this prayer is the culmination of all that Jesus taught about it. Chapter 17 summarizes most of Jesus' ministry but specifically chapters 13-16. It all boils down to becoming one with God and returning to the relationship that we (all mankind) have chosen to walk away from. This was a great study for me and I hope that you got as much out of it as I have! Have a great week!

John 16

Here is a recap of what we explored in John 16:

- Jesus left so that the helper, the Holy Spirit would come. The Spirit has some distinct advantages over the bodily incarnation of Jesus. It can be with every believer, all of the time.

- Jesus was powered by the same Holy Spirit that he sends to us. It is our inheritance from him.

- While there will be seasons of difficulty in our lives, we can live in anticipation that joy will triumph.

John 15 - Abide in Christ by Loving Like Christ

To sum up John 15 - we are called to abide in Christ; to abide in his love. We do this by obeying his commands. This is called out sepcifically in v12 and v17 - to LOVE. We are called to love one another like Christ has first loved us. This is not a selfish love or something that has alterior motives. But it is a sacraficial love - a love that seeks the glory of God the Father. For more insight on what love is and what it looks like, re-read 1 Cor 13 and Gal 5:22-23. What an incredible picture! Thanks for persevering through my rustiness last Sunday! Its great to be back in the saddle!

John Chapter 14

As Jesus' time draws closer and closer to his crucifixion, He begins to pour out His heart to the disciples. And in Chapter 13 He tells them that one of them will betray him... and that He will be leaving them... and where He is going they cannot come. And He leaves His disciples in a state of shock regarding the events that are about to come.

Well in Chapter 14 despite the agony that Jesus is in anticipation of… he looks up at the disciples... see thier troubled hearts... and then He teaches one of the most magnificent sections of the Bible.

As we discussed, I think in this section Jesus teachs 3 themes that I believe all Christ followers need to keep in the fore front of their minds.

1. We have a hope beyond this world.
2. Jesus is the only way to the Father… and by looking at Jesus we are looking at the Father.
3. We have been given a comforter, the Holy Spirit, which when we believe indwells us and then teaches us and guides us.

John Chapter 13

John Chapter 13 begins with a foot washing, which as we talked about is really a parable of what Jesus has done for us. After the foot washing Jesus begins the upper room discourse. This is one of my favorite sections of scripture. This discourse continues through Chapter 17 and centers largely around love. As we discussed Jesus touches his disciples and then teaches them. He shows them what love is by washing their feet. And then he teaches them what love is.

Below are the notes and the audio (note there was an audio problem and it only recorded the first portion of the talk—but the notes are posted as well).

We left off at the end of Chapter 13 with Jesus telling Peter that he will deny him 3 times before the roosters crows. And as we discussed this is the perfect set up for Jesus’ teaching in Chapter 14.

I’m really looking forward to Chapter 14. See you next week.

John 12

Thanks for the folks who showed up to discuss John 12 last night!

I was especially challenged by the idea that there is a limit to God's patience, and that eventually the preaching and calls to righteousness will stop, and our lives choices will be permanently ratified.

I was especially encouraged by the idea that Jesus rode the Donkey into Jeruselem as a symbol that he was coming to make peace. Not with the Jews, or with the Romans, but with Almighty God. We have rebelled against God, and deserve his wrath, but while we where still enemies Jesus reconciled us to him.

Mary's worship of Jesus was mocked by Judas, and perhaps some of the other disciples, but Jesus defended her. I believe that our heartfelt worship is also frequently mocked, but Jesus loves it, and we seek his praise above the praise of men.

The Good Shepherd

I really enjoyed sharing what I learned through the study of John 10 this Sunday.

-Contrary to what our culture tells us, the best life is not found in freedom, it is found in being a servant to the greatest master in the universe, our Lord, Jesus.

-Jesus was who He was through His relationship with the Father. We are who we are because or our relationship with Jesus. He is the Author and Perfecter of our faith.

-The persecuted, when liberated, can easily become persecutors unless they submit to the Shepherd.

John Chapter 9

I love John Chapter 9. In this chapter Jesus addresses one of the deep philosophical questions that we all have. I think Jon Courson's quote "Misery opens the door for ministry" sums up Jesus’ answer to the question posed in this chapter. Also Chapter 9 includes one of my favorite (and one of the more graphic and descriptive) analogies of salvation. All in all there is a ton we can learn from this chapter.

I have noted to several of you how amazed (and thankful) I am that as we move through John, I can see God is placing specific things in my life (most of which are uncomfortable) to help teach me each of these sections. That is the beauty of God’s word. If we are committed (both corporately and individually) to learning His word (thus learning about our divine eternal creator), He will be faithful in teaching us. If you are curious about this, come talk to me.

John chapter 8 and those rascaly Jews

When I say Jews up there in the title, you know I mean Jewish authorities.
I am afraid that I might be competing with Bloomsday this weekend. I hope that a few people can muster the energy after such a excruciating run and still visit us as STN. If not, I understand...kinda...I guess. You can still listen to it later. Check the easy to find and down load list at the bottom of the page.

This week we see Jesus really digs in and establishes his position with the authorities. There are always interesting morsels to gobble up, judgment, sin, death -- forgiveness, righteousness, and life. Come and give these nuggets of knowledge a taste. See ya there.

What happened to April??? Potluck and Outlet Again!

Gods will and our will; Jn 7

Wasn't that GREAT. I got really excited about "choosing" to do Gods will. I hope some of it rubs off on you. Go and read the first part of Isa 55. What wonderful stuff. We see God setting up the idea of living water, of the bread of life...open your heart and pray for the Lords will to become plain to you...and listen. Your life will begin to walk the road of adventure for God.

John Chapter 6

The last two months of my life have been some of the most difficult and trying times I’ve experienced. Everything from my wife having a miscarriage… to my son having pneumonia in both lungs and almost dying… to me being totally over whelmed and behind at work. What a perfect time God has chosen for me to study and learn about John Chapter 6.

No SNT next Sunday (Easter) and Potluck Time Again!

We will not be having SNT next Sunday. Let's take this time to spend with our families celebrating the incredible sacrafice that Jesus made for us on the cross!

Our next meeting will be March 30th. Since this is the last Sunday of the month it will be POTLUCK TIME again! Get prepared for some great food and fellowship. We will also be diverging from our normal teaching time and instead will dive into some great worship from our worship team. We are bringing back Outlet (monthly worship night) and integrating it into our monthly potluck. I hope and pray to see you all there! Bring your friends and family!

Jesus' Claims to be God and the Sovereignty of God

Tonight we walked through the entire 5th chapter of John in a way that I hadn't done before. Instead of preparing a message on the chapter, it was decieded that we would just walk through the verses and discuss each section in detail. I have to say, I did feel a little unprepared because I hadn't written 10 or 12 pages on the chapter but I feel like it went really well. I know that I have learned a lot through this process and I hope that you have as well. Tonight we discussed quite a few things but I believe the biggest topic of the night dealt with the discussion of Jesus' claims to be God. This is such a pivital point in our faith. We talked about the Liar, Lunatic, Lord discussion of CS Lewis and how because of Jesus' claims, we have to make a choice as to who we beleive he was. We also discussed the idea that Jesus healed the invalid at the pool even though he didn't know Jesus and wasn't looking to God for help! This speaks directly to the Sovereignty of God which can lead into many many other discussions! Thanks to all of you who came and participated. This entire SNT experience has enriched my life is so many ways! God bless you all and I look forward to our next meeting.

Jesus speaks in our personality & Where is Jn 5:4

The official is a nice way wrap up a series of examples of how Jesus breaks down walls to talk to us. In the comparison between Nicodemus, the Samaritan Woman and the Official, we see Jesus talking to each in the way they needed to hear. I have to admit I miss spoke the prior week in suspecting Nicodemus did not follow Jesus. We find him tending to Jesus grave in 19:39, He also tries to defend Jesus in 7:50. So the cool thing about comparing these three is that they all believed.

Second thing is where is Jn 5:4, and what is with Jn 7:53-8:11. We had a great discussion after this and what came up is... I should have started with my conclusion. So let me make this statement before you listen to the audio. The Bible that we have today, regardless, of the translation is the most scrutinized text in human history. A study of Hermeneutics claim it to be 99.5% identical to the originals.

The scripture is God breathed, definitive and inerrant but human copies of the text are not; the object is not a holy relic. You are a holy relic. You are a temple with the word of God at your core.
