The film ended and I sat motionless while the credits rolled. Slowly I got up and walked out into the cold January air, sickened by what I’d been party to, so acutely aware that the scenes presented as entertainment and edification – scenes I’d paid to see – were, at that very moment, possibly taking place in a grand house somewhere in central London. I had partaken of cruel, thoughtless voyeurism, the subject of which was powerless to protest at her exploitation.

There was never any doubt that The Iron Lady would be a controversial film. The mere mention of Margaret Thatcher, despite her leaving office over two decades ago, still divides the nation as it did when she was Prime Minister. Since its release last Friday, the movie has played to packed audiences, taking £2.2 million in its opening weekend and reaching number 1 at the UK box office.

Yet it has also attracted protests and pickets, as well as accusations from those who remain hostile to her premiership that it portrays Lady Thatcher in a forgiving light.

My anger at the film has nothing to do with politics. I don’t object to the artistic licence exercised over certain events or the way Lady Thatcher’s political life is portrayed. My issue is with the portrayal of how she is now. And I suspect that those who have seen the film will feel the same.

While Meryl Streep’s performance is mesmerising, it is impossible not to be disturbed by her depiction of Lady Thatcher’s decline into dementia. Columnists and commentators such as Charles Moore, Norman Tebbit and Douglas Hurd have opined in this newspaper and elsewhere about this distasteful approach. And David Cameron has similarly questioned the morality of making the film while she is still alive. I did not expect to agree with them. But now I am even more vehement in my condemnation, because, as a doctor, I have direct experience of the reality of dementia for the sufferer and their family.

The film is based in the present day and features flashbacks to Lady Thatcher’s early life, her rise to power and the defining events of her premiership and downfall. But from the opening scene, where a confused and befuddled Lady Thatcher wanders into a corner shop to buy a pint of milk, I began to feel uncomfortable. As I watched scene after scene showing this once all-powerful woman as old, bewildered and scared, my discomfort turned to rage.

In one vignette, she is hosting a dinner party at her Belgravia home, clearly confused as to who is present, muddled in her thinking and humiliated as she struggles with names and battles to keep up with the conversation. There is a flash of the old Mrs Thatcher and her mastery of argument – then it is gone. In another poignant scene, she scuttles around her flat, turning on electrical appliances in an attempt to drown out the sound of the “voice” of her long-dead husband Denis, which torments her constantly. She peers furtively around doors to overhear people discussing her deterioration.

In my work in caring for the elderly, I have treated many older people with dementia. The way Streep captures this is outstandingly accurate. Anyone who has cared for someone with Alzheimer’s, for example, will recognise the waxing and waning confusion; the way in which sufferers appear to slip into another world, their loss of a sense of time, the way they look at you utterly perplexed in stark contrast to rare moments of startling clarity and insight – all the things that make this disease so cruel and tragic. The film is faultless in its depiction of dementia.

But to show someone in the throes of an illness while they are actually experiencing it and in terminal decline is chillingly insensitive. Can you imagine an unauthorised film being made about the life of a public figure who was dying of cancer, for example – Christopher Hitchens, say – before his death? Can you imagine watching scenes that his family opposed – showing him writhing in agony, weak and vulnerable? Of course not. There would be a furious outcry. It would rightly be considered a terrible violation of that person’s privacy, and in appalling poor taste.

So how are the scenes that show Lady Thatcher battling with dementia any different? Whether the portrayal of her as an old lady is sympathetic and kindly or not is irrelevant. It dramatises highly personal and deeply tragic aspects of someone’s life while they are still experiencing it.

I never imagined I would ever leap to the defence of Margaret Thatcher. I am a child of the Thatcher era but no Thatcherite. In the Eighties, my father lost his job as a milkman and joined the ranks of the unemployed. Times were hard and I remember vividly the loathing my parents felt towards her and her government. They actively supported the miners’ strikes and I have fond memories of visiting Barnsley and sitting on a miner’s knee while my parents were taken on an informal tour of the pits.

I remember the graffiti daubed on walls near our home after the poll tax riots. I remember going on marches and protests with my mother and chanting the old soubriquet “Thatcher, Thatcher milk-snatcher”. I also remember the day in 1990 when Lady Thatcher left office and a music teacher burst into our classroom, unable to conceal her delight.

Margaret Thatcher was a pantomime-ish villain of my childhood. Since then, I have developed a more circumspect view of her time in power, and a grudging respect.

I still loathe the insidious selfishness that crept into the collective consciousness under her premiership and that is so pervasive now. But I also think it’s all too easy to vilify a powerful, determined, forthright and ambitious woman as an ogre, blaming her for society’s ills in a way that would never happen to a man in public office. She was dedicated to public service, with a strong sense of social responsibility and duty. While I might not agree with her solutions to the serious problems this country faced in the early Eighties, at least she believed passionately that what she was doing was for the greater good. Surely her astonishing political journey from grocer’s daughter to Downing Street is worthy enough of the Hollywood treatment, without focusing on her descent into dementia?

Whatever one’s feelings about Lady Thatcher’s legacy, The Iron Lady is a disgraceful film. You do not have to support her politics to defend her right to privacy in old age. She deserves to be treated with as much dignity as anyone else. This is precisely what the film, in depicting her in the grip of dementia while she is still alive, fails to do.

I do not know how impaired Lady Thatcher is, if she really hallucinates and sees her dead husband or has ever slipped past her minders to wander aimlessly to the shops, confused and alone. But I do hope she never sees this film or reads the reviews. No wonder her children, Mark and Carol, refused to attend private screenings.

Watch this film without knowledge of the background and you’d assume Margaret Thatcher had already died. This is what angered me most about The Iron Lady. It is representative of how society largely views elderly people, particularly those with dementia. They are ignored. They are considered to be dead long before they actually are. Those with dementia experience a loss, not just of their memory and cognition, but of respect and dignity.

Sociologists talk of “social death” and “biological death”. Ideally, the two coincide, but in dementia, there is discordance. As people with dementia decline, they are no longer deemed worthy of attention or thought. As far as society is concerned, they are already history. This film gets away with treating Lady Thatcher as though she were already dead, because that’s precisely how society behaves towards the old and infirm. This is lamentable, vile and shameful – and it should anger every one of us.

Ariel, the “little mermaid” in the Disney® film, is much more than a fairy tale for little girls. Rather, she is a powerful metaphor for the plight of the “Sacred Feminine” over the last several thousand years of western civilization. Since Mary Magdalene, the “Lost Bride” in the Christian story, is a “carrier” of the Sacred Feminine, (in fact, a composite of Aphrodite, Athene, and Demeter, not to mention similarities with Isis, Inanna and Astarte–and the Holy Sophia!), this discussion is relevant especially to her. She was to have been the Lady of the Age of Pisces as Christ was its Lord, forming together the sacred mandala of “hieros gamos” for the Age of the Fishes.

What happened to this “Goddess” of the ancient world–she who was “Queen of Heaven and Earth”? She has been systematically devalued and made diminutive, relegated into the watery depths of our unconscious (like Ariel, the seventh of seven sisters), controlled and patronized by the “benevolent” patriarchy (Ariel’s father, King Triton, in the Disney movie). Ariel’s face is dark, like that of the Bride in the Song of Songs (1:5), “swarthy” from her labor in her brothers’ vineyards. And she has long wavy red hair, a commonly held attribute of Mary Magdalene.

And what is the dream and desire of Ariel, the littlest mermaid? Why, to walk upon the green earth, out in the sunlight. It is interesting to note that in the Disney film, it is not Ariel who needs to be saved, but rather it is the “handsome Prince” who is in deep trouble, shipwrecked and dying (the condition of the partriarchy at the dawn of Aquarius??) it is Ariel who is HIS redeemer, not the other way around!

In her cave under the ocean, Ariel collects artifacts from Spanish galleons shipwrecked at sea. She examines the commonplace items used by humans and wonders what they are for and what it would be like to be human. Among her treasures is a painting by Georges de la Tour called “Magdalen with the Smoking Flame.” Mary is gazing at a candle burning on the table beside her. In the film, Ariel tries to pluck the flame out of the picture.

Of all the possible pictures available from art galleries around the world, it is incredibly significant that the directors of the Disney® film chose to place Mary Magdalene at the bottom of the sea, for it is SHE who represents the lost Bride and the archetype of the “Sacred Feminine” as partner in Christian mythology. She also represents the Church as Bride and was recognized as the model for “ekklesia” by the early Christian fathers — the “beloved community” redeemed by Christ. In this connection, it is almost uncanny that the little mermaid is called Ariel, for Ariel is a synonym for Jerusalem, the Holy City besieged (see Isaiah 29:1-8). Either the use of these symbols was deliberate on the part of the directors of the film, or it rose spontaneously from the depths of their unconscious and was intuited to be appropriate!

And what is the condition of young Ariel? She, too, is besieged. She is chided and teased about her wish to be human. Her kindly father and the sea witch even conspire to prevent her from being joined with her beloved. Her voice is stolen and she is unable to speak her truth. In a similar way, Magdalene’s voice was “stolen” when she was called prostitute (without any scriptural justification whatsoever!). Her story was desecrated, her robes and mantle of honor, like those of the Bride in the Canticle, were stripped from her by the “guardians of the walls” (5:7).

In the film, the little mermaid does not carry a book and a mirror by accident. These are icons readily identified in Medieval art. The mirror is not just a symbol for feminine vanity but represents the role of the material world (Mater, mother, matter) to manifest the Divine in “the flesh,” as the moon mirrors the sun. The “Sophia” is called the “immaculate mirror” of Divine energy. The book represents all natural and spiritual law — science and revelation — and the Wisdom of seeking to know God’s precepts. In Medieval times the adage “Nothing is without meaning” applied to every icon in every painting. I would love to ask the Disney® film director if these icons were used by holy accident — or by design.

An interesting aside is that the Merovingian bloodline, identified as the “vine of Mary” in the heresy of the Holy Grail, is said to have had a mermaid as a progenitoress and to be descended from a king “Merovee” who was half man, half fish. Mermaids are prominent among the medieval watermarks related to the heresy of the bloodline, and some are rendered with the fleur-de-lis of the Merovingians entwined around their double tails. The connection of Mary Magdalene with the mermaid and the “Queen of the Sea” is very old.

What is the ultimate desire of the “devalued” Feminine archetype personified by “Ariel”? Of course, it is to be reunited with the “Divine Masculine” in sacred partnership — not sublimated to his interests as her savior and mentor, but as his partner, his Beloved and his equal — something women are barely able to imagine after centuries of being the “little sister,” one of the poignant epithets of the Bride in the Song of Songs! (8:8)

Carl Jung speaks of the condition of the patriarchy at the end of the age when its energy has been spent and it is no longer able to uphold the “establishment” it has built over the millennia. The “masculine” suffers burnout. Jung calls it the “enantiodromia.” At some point, the feminine rises and returns to lend her strength and for a period the two are reconciled and unite to forge a new cultural “thrust” for the next age. It is time now for the “sacred feminine” to reemerge to play her role in the waning hours of the Age of Pisces, for her “prince” can’t be whole without her!

How interesting that the image of the little mermaid, with the MM’s of Mary Magdalene formed at the ends of her two tails and in her crown, is posted at streetcorners worldwide in the form of the Starbucks® logo! She is the “siren” calling to us from our unconscious, hoping that we will hear her voice! She is intent on finding her way into our conscious lives as she rises to join her Beloved!

Later we got the book, The World Peace Diet on which the CD is based and read it from cover to cover several times; in retrospect, this was an exercise that helped our veganism find zestful expression. After more than two years of the beginning of this beautiful new journey, on a whim, we wrote to Dr. Will Tuttle, the creator of The World Peace Diet—a No.1 Amazon best-seller of March, 2010—and the owner of the exceptionally soothing voice we had heard in the CD. We were thrilled to receive an instant response. Dr. Tuttle consented to a discussion revolving around The World Peace Diet for all of us here in India!

Dr. Will Tuttle needs no introduction, because if we attempt at introducing him, no words will be enough. It is Dr. Tuttle’s gift of thoughts and ideas, contained in his writings, music, and speech that help express the forgotten ideals dwelling in the deepest recesses of all human hearts, which define him. It is how people change their lives for a truly beautiful present and future with his facilitation that define him. He is an institution that we have come to deeply revere. From His Holiness, The Dalai Lama who has acknowledged the wisdom in The World Peace Diet (you will find the kitchen of the monastery of His residence now vegetarian) (Source), to other Tibetan monasteries who have similarly converted their kitchens, to individual selves such as many like us, the book has appealed to the higher good residing in every human being. Hailed as “one of the most important books of the 21st century”, The World Peace Diet has begun a peaceful revolution in the minds of many! Sure enough, if there was a parallel to the Nobel Prize in the ‘Kingdom of Light, Love, and Compassion’ that would include the fascinating Animal Kingdom, The World Peace Diet would receive the undisputed crown.

In this discussion with Dr. Tuttle, we learn about the beginnings of The World Peace Diet, the moral basis of other movements in the world to stream into including the rights of animals, the spiritual approach to veganism, and the substance that comprises the innate intelligence of humans. The discussion ends with an intuitive message from Dr. Tuttle for all of India. Dr. Tuttle reminds us of the nobility of our land, in the collective conscience of which is buried the highest ideals of reverence for all Life. Each section in this discussion in the form of a Q&A is a wholesome commentary by itself; so you will find each section labeled accordingly. Happy reading, dear Readers.

On the birthing of The World Peace Diet…

Vegan India!: Dr. Tuttle, your book, The World Peace Diet is a unique modern-day discourse on the universal Law of Karma, perhaps the mother of all laws, that calls urgent attention towards understanding the interconnectedness between every single life-form on Earth, every cultural predicament that we humans face. This universal law of Karma is not alien to our culture—the popular proverb, “as we sow, so we shall we reap” has translations and variations in perhaps all languages. With Newton’s law, “every action has an equal and opposite reaction”, we find an acknowledgement even in “scientific” terms. However, when it comes to making food choices, our ability to make connections in line with this universal law simply freezes. We deny that food has any power at all. Your book answers the question—what gives food such power and why this power is unrecognized today. It helps connect the array of problems that beset us—such as “chronic war, terrorism, genocide, starvation, the proliferation of disease, environmental degradation, species extinction, animal abuse, consumerism, drug addiction, alienation, stress, racism, oppression of women, child abuse, corporate exploitation, materialism, poverty, injustice, and social malaise” (pg. xiv-xv)—to the lifestyle choices we make as an individual, community, nation, and world citizen. You have also cautioned that by “refusing to make this essential connection, we condemn others and ourselves to enormous suffering.” Please tell us of that moment which inspired you to write The World Peace Diet when all the connections became clear and how long did it take to complete writing the book?

Dr. Tuttle: Yes, even though I never use the word, karma in the manuscript of The World Peace Diet, you are correct that the book is essentially an in-depth discourse on the karmic repercussions of our food choices. For some reason, I was strongly attracted to eastern religions and cultures from my youth, and in my early twenties an intense yearning for spiritual awakening propelled me into a life of meditation, wandering, and scriptural study. This led pretty quickly to questioning the official stories I had been raised to believe, including the necessity of eating animal flesh to be healthy. I became a vegetarian in 1975 at the age of 22 at a Zen-inspired spiritual community called The Farm in Tennessee, and that opened the doorway to a deeper understanding of the spiritual and karmic effects of my actions. I read ravenously the teachings and life stories of many of the sages from India, such as Ramana Maharshi, Shankara, Patanjali, Yogananda, Vivekenanda, Muktananda, Prabhupada, Nisirgadatta, Krishnamurti, Nagarjuna, and practiced yoga and meditation, and studied Zen and Vajrayana Buddhism, as well as Jainism, Sikhism, Sufism, Taoism, esoteric Christianity, and other traditions. I lived in both Vajrayana (Tibetan) and Zen Buddhist meditation centers, and in 1980 I became a vegan because of grasping the bigger picture of animal suffering not just for meat, but also for dairy products, eggs, clothing, entertainment, research, and so forth.

All the connections between our food choices and our broad range of problems that are elucidated in The World Peace Diet grew gradually in my consciousness over a period of many years, like a garden that takes time and a lot of tending and inputs. The main inputs were the ancient spiritual teachings from Asia, as well as regular meditation practice to free the mind from conditioning, plus many years in academia studying, writing, and teaching literature, drama, philosophy, history, comparative religion, sociology, anthropology, mythology, education, peace studies, and the arts. I feel that many insights emerged through the interplay of this broad range of intellectual study, and also through my regular practice of piano music composition and improvisation as well: music can be an activity that integrates and harmonizes the rational and intuitive capacities of the mind, like meditation, and in retrospect I can see this was an important foundation for the work of writing The World Peace Diet.

After many years of practicing vegan living and studying it in depth, and contemplating the powerful effects of our food choices, I began to see the “big picture” of The World Peace Diet in my consciousness as a vast mandala of interconnections that influences and is influenced by virtually every aspect of our personal and collective lives, as well as the lives of nonhuman animals and the Earth. I began saying to my spouse Madeleine, as I described my vision to her, that there is so much more to veganism than most people realize, and that someone would certainly be writing a book about it soon, and that it would be great to read that book when it was published. I could see clearly that the three main generally-recognized reasons for going vegan—boycotting cruelty to animals, alleviating environmental destruction, and improving health—while hugely important, are just part of the story. There’s actually much more to it—the psychological, spiritual, cultural, and historical dimensions—that were virtually invisible and not discussed or understood.

So I kept telling Madeleine how I would enjoy reading the book that I was sure someone would be writing soon, and as the years went by, and it never appeared, I began to realize that I was being called to write the book myself. After several starts, I got an introductory chapter overview written, and got an agreement with Lantern Books in New York to publish it, and from that point, it took about five years of full-time work to create The World Peace Diet. The creative process of writing and editing the manuscript was helpful in further refining the ideas, and helped me to discover more connections as well.

On other movements in the world and connecting the dots…

Vegan India!: Dr. Tuttle, the tag line of your book is, “Eating for Spiritual Health and Social Harmony.” This is a powerful tagline. However, since many of us construe spirituality as a “wishy-washy” term with “elusive” concepts, we tend not to pay attention. Nevertheless, when we begin to read the book, we cannot help but marvel at the dexterity with which you have combined core concepts from the fields of Psychology, Sociology, Economics, Anthropology, History, Science, Gender, Politics, Medicine, Ethics, Ecology, Human Rights, Music and so on to present such a remarkable commentary that helps “see” the connections our culture has never taught us to see. As you have rightly pointed out, we are manipulated by vested interests whose profits depend on our inability to make meaningful connections. Our urge to empathize with and protect the vulnerable is repressed by our “herding culture.” You have construed a completely different reality that actually takes us closest to realizing Who We Really Are. Dr. Tuttle, if all the pro peace, justice, equality, rights, and freedom movements in the world were to accept this reality and were to join hands, do you think the “critical mass” would be attained to elevate the Earth of human and animal suffering, alienation, and exploitation? Please elaborate.

Dr. Tuttle: This is an intriguing question, and the implicit question in it is: Why do the millions of people actively working for peace, justice, equality, rights, sustainability, and freedom in our world continue to pay for and eat the flesh and secretions of enslaved animals when it is clearly antithetical to their values and goals? How is such an obvious contradiction not recognized, and why do so many have such a difficult time actually bringing their lives into alignment with their values? I devote several chapters to responding to this question in The World Peace Diet and it seems to me that while there is some progress being made, it must accelerate quickly if we are to survive and successfully transform our culture.

As I discuss in The World Peace Diet, the problems we create are based on the underlying mentality of reductionism, disconnectedness, elitism, and exclusivism required by our most powerful connection with our culture and with Nature and each other: eating. It is absurd to think we can make significant progress in our quest for universal peace, justice, equality, and sustainability while enslaving and killing animals routinely for food. When we look deeply and carefully into these matters, we see that there are two levels at work simultaneously, both of which are consciously and subconsciously suppressed in our awareness and in public conversation and in the media. The first level is that eating animal foods is the primary driving force behind the actual problems that we have—culturally, economically, ecologically, and in virtually every dimension of our shared life. The second level is the inner mentality required to get us to regularly purchase and ingest animal foods.

For the first level, because it takes enormous amounts of land, water, petroleum, pesticides, and fertilizer to grow grain for confined animals, and to graze them (10-30 times more than eating plant foods directly), animal agriculture is the main contributor to environmental devastation, global climate disruption, rainforest destruction, topsoil loss, water pollution and shortage, over-fishing, ocean acidification and dead zones, species extinction, habitat loss, and loss of genetic diversity, as well as human hunger, starvation, and malnutrition. As Thich Nhat Hanh has written, “Every day forty thousand children die for lack of food. We who overeat in the West, who are feeding grain to animals to make meat, are eating the flesh of these children.” These inequities contribute to war and political and cultural tension. In addition, it’s well-recognized now that eating animal-based foods is the main force behind the physical diseases that are pandemic in industrialized countries: diabetes, osteoporosis, cancer, heart disease, strokes, liver and kidney disease, obesity, and autoimmune disease. I discuss in The World Peace Diet how eating animal foods contributes to psychological disease (anxiety, depression, insomnia, and drug addiction are rampant in the animals confined in factory farms and in the people consuming these animals), as well as spiritual, moral, economic, and cultural disease and discord.

The second level, which is the more hidden inner level, is that eating animal foods requires us to adopt precisely the mental and emotional disconnections that reduce our capacity to deal effectively with the problems we’re creating. We’re all born into a culture that conditions us not just to witness the eating of animal flesh and secretions, but to participate in it ourselves from infancy. This suppresses our natural wisdom, compassion, creativity, joy, self-confidence, and sense of being part of a benevolent and beautiful universe. We learn to compete, and to stay shallow in our quest for truth, because we’re unable usually to question the violence we cause and eat with our daily meals, and we become easily manipulated and controlled like the animals we are abusing by proxy every day. We inevitably become obsessed with consuming, which serves the corporations well, and gullible, which serves governments and the ruling elite well.

To create the critical mass necessary for the peace, justice, equality, freedom, and sustainability movements to be effective, we are called to realize that our routine mistreatment of nonhuman animals for food is the defining and driving inner and outer obstacle to progress, and that by radically including animals in our loving and compassionate embrace, we create the actual foundation for success in all the liberation movements, which are all interconnected. Oppressing animals, raping them, stealing and killing their babies, stealing their milk and their lives and their purposes—this all sows the seeds of our own oppression. It also suppresses the inner feminine wisdom residing in all of us (I call this Sophia in The World Peace Diet), and so what we really need to see—and I think we are seeing it—is the resurrection of Sophia in the world today. Sophia, our innate feminine wisdom, is the passionate loving protection of the vulnerable and innocent and is the core of veganism and of the ancient teaching of ahimsa: that nonviolence is the path to joy and liberation for all. We live on a beautiful, abundant planet, and there is nothing stopping us from living healthy, peaceful, celebratory lives, except the habitual practice of enslaving animals for food and the mentality this practice requires of us.

On the spiritual approach to veganism…

Vegan India!: Dr. Tuttle, The World Peace Diet also provides a framework to get into the minds of the entire gamut of human “perpetrators” from the transnational corporations who dominate over and are responsible for the suffering and killing of millions of innocent animals for profit to the person who procures, cooks, and eats animal suffering. Such groups of humans are themselves victims of violence—abused and wounded. It seems that their way to keep the control is by making “victims” of the enslaved animals. In doing so, not only do they hurt the animals but they hurt themselves as well. While this is a very reasonable explanation, at times it becomes very difficult to admit we “understand” this vicious cycle because “understanding” at one level does make us less judgmental and bring about “sympathy” for the perpetrators, something that we want to deny ourselves. This is perhaps where the overarching spiritual approach to veganism could help us in our quest to rid the world of suffering, in a peaceful manner. Could you please elaborate and highlight the basic tenets of the spiritual approach to veganism that can help all of us (“the attentive and articulate bystanders”) spread the essence of a peaceful revolution without being judgmental, yet by acting as the true conscience of the perpetrators, to heal their wounds without feeling outraged?

Dr. Tuttle: Excellent question—it follows from the prior one. A spiritual approach is essential because we are called to go to a higher level to solve our problems. Violence, in the form of judgment and blame, only breeds further hostility and misunderstanding. The spirit of veganism is making an effort to evolve to become an embodiment of universal loving compassion for all—attaining a consciousness of radical inclusion that includes not just those close to us, but all animals and humans, including those who we may not like, such as, for example, hunters, greedy bankers and chemical company executives, and so forth. We cannot force others to change; we can only change and awaken our own consciousness, and to the degree we authentically do this, we will be more effective in being “articulate bystanders” and helping others to evolve in their behavior and understanding.

Meditation is important I believe, because when we quiet our minds and directly experience the truth that we are, we discover that we are, essentially, eternal consciousness, and that our true nature is freedom, joy, and tender compassion. We begin to peel away the layers of cultural conditioning. We reconnect with our authentic feelings and with our inner intuitive wisdom. We question and see through the official stories of our culture, and how they imprison us in lies and delusions. We open to higher understanding and we begin, as Gandhi so poignantly encouraged us, to be the change we wish to see in the world. With this new and higher perspective, rather than blaming and judging others for buying hamburgers, for example, we understand with compassion that they are obediently following a conditioned program that has been powerfully injected into their minds from infancy. It is not their fault that they are eating meat and dairy; they haven’t yet been able to break free of the cultural program and to see that it has been imposed on them, and that it is absolutely not in their best interests, or in the best interests of animals, the Earth, future generations, or any of us, except, perhaps for a tiny handful of wealthy war and drug profiteers.

So a spiritual unfoldment is essential. Veganism and ahimsa are essentially spiritual practices, and they lead onward and upward to ever-higher realizations and awakenings. We can strive to live and exemplify the vegan ideal, and this helps others to do the same.

On the innate intelligence of humans…

Vegan India!: Dr. Tuttle, we understand that we were not born with sensibilities to exploit others. We are socialized into it. In that sense there are no “enemies”, it is simply a quest to realize who we really are. For those of us who have been blessed with this consciousness, it becomes a moral responsibility to help others with a positive approach come closer to whom they really are—a part of that “eternal benevolent consciousness”. Please help summarize for the benefit of our readers what in your opinion comprises the innate intelligence of humans that responds to the call of its highest, true self?

Dr. Tuttle: Yes, this positive approach is essential. Vegan living is a solid foundation for joy in our lives! And the innate intelligence that responds to the call is the inner feminine wisdom I referred to earlier as Sophia. Sophia is the ancient Greek goddess of wisdom and represents the capacity within all of us to awaken compassion and transform self-centered delusion into healing insight and joyful living. Another name for Sophia is Mahakaruna—“great compassion” in Sanskrit—this is the natural functioning of our true nature, free from the delusion of self-preoccupation that is ritually injected into all of us by our cultural upbringing, and especially by the socially-mandated practices of routinely eating foods derived from imprisoned animals.

It’s important to remember that when we consider nonhuman animals, we know in our bones that these beings, like us, yearn to fulfill their purposes and to avoid pain and confinement, and to live freely, as they did for millions of years before we began to interfere with them and imprison them. We are all called to realize that the very attitude of owning another being is an act of himsa, or violence, and that it is a stealing of a being’s sovereignty for our own ends. We know for ourselves that to be imprisoned is a terrible punishment. It is what we do to condemned criminals. Our sovereignty is precious and is essential for our happiness and fulfillment. Raised in a culture of oppression, though, we are taught that other beings exist for our purposes, and it is of no consequence to own them as property. This is what we did here in the American South for hundreds of years to people from Africa, for example, and what we still do to animals for food.

So if we “own” cows and treat them kindly and use their milk, we are committing violence and cruelty at the fundamental level of stealing their sovereignty. We make them dependent on us for food and protection. We reduce them in countless ways. They are not able to fulfill their inherent drives to live as part of a free-living community of bovines roaming the land and looking after themselves and relating with each other and the rest of Nature in an open, unencumbered way that would provide for them a sense of joy, freedom, and fulfillment that we can barely imagine with all our preconceptions about cows. The fact is that owning cows for milk is utterly unnecessary today. Cows’ milk is a source of no nutrients that we cannot get from plant-based sources, and is the source of a variety of substances that are essentially toxic to us as human beings, such as casein, IGF-1 growth hormone, estrogen, and other hormones, as well as saturated fat, cholesterol, and concentrated environmental toxins, all of which are linked with cancer, diabetes, obesity, heart-disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, and autoimmune diseases. And besides the existential cruelty inherent in all dairy foods is the added and inescapable cruelty in all operations, even small family-owned ones.

I have a friend from India who traveled the country and interviewed small family cow owners and he learned that he could ask two questions that would always reveal the cruelty to cows required by milk products. One question was, “What do you do with the male calves that are born?” The typical answer was, “We sell them.” The vast majority end up being sold and slaughtered for meat (either veal or beef). In some cases, they may be first castrated and used as oxen to work in fields, after which they are sold. The second question was, “What do you do with the female cows after their milk production declines?” Again, the cow owners would get uncomfortable and say, “We sell them.” Meat again. Or perhaps they let them go to wander the countryside, where they often starve slowly.

Our religions often provide justification for cultural practices that are harmful, and part of spiritual awakening is evolving to the point that we can question traditions and official stories that are no longer appropriate. The beauty in all of this is that if we all switched to a plant-based diet of organic foods, we would need a small fraction of the land we are now using for agriculture, and vast areas could be returned to wilderness and habitat for animals, and so there would be plenty of room for bovines to roam freely again throughout central Asia as they did for millions of years, and for chickens to live again in the jungles of southeast Asia, and all the animals to celebrate their lives free from human oppression. New relationships with free-living, powerful, and respected animals could be mutually enriching in ways that we cannot imagine from our current impoverished and shallow relationships with animals whom we treat generally as either property or pests.

Each one of us can be a force for freedom, joy, healing, and compassion. As we rely less on the narratives and dictates of an essentially exploitive culture, and learn through meditation to rely more on our inner intuitive wisdom and compassion, we can help our culture evolve to a higher level. This is, I think, the greatest gift we can give to our loved ones, our world, and ourselves. As Krishnamurti said, “It is not a good idea to be well-adjusted to a sick society.” Although we all want to fit in with our society, at a certain point we awaken and realize that we have a higher purpose than just fitting in and suppressing our inner light of compassion and joy. This is when the spiritual path begins, and we begin to become a true human being.

A message for India…

Vegan India!: Dr. Tuttle, in the last chapter of your book, “Living the Revolution” you have said something very beautiful about the fact that “each one of us has a piece of the puzzle to contribute, and our overall success (to transform our inheritor dominator mentality by liberating those we have enslaved for food) depends on each of us discovering our talents and passion and persistently contributing them.” In the Indian context, vegans in India come from almost every walk of life and many are doing brilliant outreach work in ways they are gifted in and most comfortable with. Definitely, many have started to “live the revolution” and are plugging in myriad ways to educate others. Dr. Tuttle, if you had to share a message with the vegans, vegan aspirants, and everybody else in India, what would it be?

Dr. Tuttle: My basic message to Indians is one of gratitude and encouragement. My own veganism is really a product of the ancient Indian spiritual teachings that came through the centuries to me in the West as Buddhist, Jain, and Hindu teachings and inspired countless people who inspired me, such as Emerson, Thoreau, Alcott, Tolstoy, Gandhi, King, Gaskin (the founder of The Farm), and going further back, Pythagoras, Socrates, Plotinus, and many others who were also inspired by the sages of India. Your land is the world’s greatest living repository of the spiritual wisdom that can heal and transform our world today. Both the vegetarian and the vegan movements in the West and worldwide can easily be traced back to India. You carry the light and are the keepers of the flame of ahimsa and spiritual liberation. I have nothing but enormous respect and gratitude for your shining example for thousands of years, and up to the present day.

I would encourage you not to be seduced by the mechanistic immaturity of the West, and especially not to adopt the cruel food practices of the West. I would encourage you to remember your glorious heritage of compassion and cooperation, to remember Asoka and other enlightened examples of kindness for all, and to strive to live the teaching of ahimsa and continue to make India the light of sanity and harmony in the world.

Thank you Dr. Tuttle. We are grateful to be able to host this wonderful discussion with you here on this space.

Ever since Joshua Greenwood read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory it had been the eight-year-old’s dream to design his own sweet treat.

And the youngster’s wish was granted when he starred in the one-off Jim’ll Fix It special.

But his magical journey didn’t stop there, as confectionery giant Nestle was so impressed by his Treasure bar, it has said it wants to roll the treat out nationwide

Joshua appeared on the show – hosted by Shane Richie and in honour of the late Sir Jimmy Savile – on Boxing Day after he wrote asking to be Willy Wonka for the day by designing and making his own bar.

The budding product designer had the idea ever since reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and when the Nestle factory in York accepted his request, he devised a bar so exceptional that the company say it could be available in shops next year.

The bar contains nuggets of edible pirate treasure in the form of a caramel, honeycomb and fudge-filled chocolate treat.

Joshua’s proud mum Alex, 39, an accountant, said: ‘Nestle say there are hurdles to overcome but we would be delighted if producing his bar could happen.

‘It’s early days but this could be the entire dream coming true, he actually could be Willy Wonka.’

Joshua, who lives with his mum, dad Graham, 41, a banker, and little sister Katie, six, seized the opportunity when his mum spotted an advert for the show.

Mrs Greenwood said: ‘He has always wanted to visit a chocolate factory ever since he saw the film and read the book last year and had the idea of three bars in his head when he applied.

‘When he read the book, there was a promotion at the shop and a golden ticket fell out and he thought he’d actually won. That’s when he stared forming ideas about what he’d done when he went in.

‘He had a fabulous time designing and making the bar and when he was there I think he ate his own body weight in chocolate. And I must say his own bar is great, it tastes really good.’

Joshua, of Hebden Bridge, West Yorks, worked with Nestle and its branding partner Anthem, who have designed iconic classics such as KitKat and Milkybar, to create his unique ‘Treasure’ bar.

Joshua, who was given a prototype sample of 50 bars and promptly handed them out to people he knew, said: ‘I thought the idea of a treasure chest would be nice for a chocolate bar and the fudge could be like coins.

‘I really like Maths and Science at school and when I get older I’d like to draw and create chocolate bars.’

A Nestle spokesperson said: ‘Joshua really is a budding confectioner of the future and in a few years time if he still shows the same innovation and passion for confectionery, we would love him to get back in contact.

‘The Treasure bar is such a fantastic product with a very different look and feel to anything else out there. We know our consumers would love to taste it and we are looking to see how we can make it available in shops in 2012.’

You should not be impelled to act for selfish reasons, nor should you be attached to inaction.”Bhagavad Gita 2.47

The whole world is a cosmic play. It is a movie written, directed and acted upon by God alone. In our ignorance we consider ourselves as the doer of the deeds, but in reality it is God through which everything is being done. All that is happening, had happened or will happen, will be caused by God. Try to understand this fundamental truth by an anecdote. Often people tell this story as a joke. But I’ll show you it’s subtle meaning . :

Once a man aboard a train with a heavy luggage. The train was full of passengers & all seats were occupied. It was a mad rush. The man, even after boarding on the train, did not place his luggage on the train but keep hanging it on his shoulders. When other co-passengers saw this, they asked him to place the luggage aside and stand comfortably. The man replied strangely by saying that since the train is already overburdened with so many passenger and luggage, he didn’t want to increase its burden by putting his luggage too on it. On hearing this, all other passengers laughed and told him,” Dear friend ! even if you hang your luggage on your shoulder, the truth is that you and your luggage are very well on the train and thus the weight of both you and your luggage is contributing to it’s burden.

Well the above is a joke. But take a look at this anecdote from the following perspective.

The man who boarded on train was an enlightened soul. When co-passengers asked him to place his luggage on the train and relaxed, he replied in the same way by saying that he didn’t want to overburdened the train. All passenger start laughing and say that even if he kept the luggage on his shoulder ,the combine weight of both will be on the train and train will remain as overburdened as it would be if you put you luggage on it’s floor. When the man listened this advice from co-passengers, he started laughing and said,” I was thinking that you all were just common people. But it appears that you all are very knowledgeable fellows. You are right when you say that even if I don’t place my luggage on train and keep hanging it on my shoulder, it is ultimately the train who will have to bear the weight of both. But don’t you think the same logic applies to life also ? You live in the illusion that your burden of responsibilities, difficulties and tensions is being dealt with by yourself. Whereas the stark reality is that even if you don’t leave your difficulties & sorrows on God, it is still God who will have to bear it. After saying this that man removed his luggage from the shoulder, placed it’s on the train and sat on it.

If we observe this world, if we see the life around us, we will find that almost 99% of things in the world are happening on their own. Human civilization with all its technical progress and with its power to think and create is definitely affecting the way this world works. However, all the changes that it has been able to make could have never been possible with out the active help of all those factors which are still beyond our control.

The earth is moving on its axis in a definite and precise manner without taking a pause. All type of weather – summer, winter, autumn & monsoon etc come at regular interval annually, the regular rain provides our farmer enough crops to feed the world, the ozone layer and other various life supporting gases such as oxygen are present in optimum quantity and supporting the life.

Sun, the provider of warmth and light is burning with a comfortable intensity. It is neither too hot nor too cold and thus is giving us with just right amount of warmth and light. There are continuous platonic shifts on our planet but none is too fast or too violent to cause immense causalities ( if you see it from a broader perspective, even the tsunami disaster that came in 2004 does not come into the category of what we called a catastrophe of global proportion. Though there have been many unfortunate deaths, our planet as a whole is secure and at least for the time-being the earth is not in a danger of extinction ).

In short there are so many situations like above which in conjunction with each other are helping human race to sustain and grow. All these activities are beyond our control but are extremely important for our survival. According to Bhagavad-Gita these actions comes under the class of ‘Vi-karmas’ (Vee’ Karmaa’s) or ‘ those actions which are caused by cosmic choreographer. There source in unknown but there preciseness and regularity left us in awe and amazement !

On a more personal level also, this truth of cosmic choreographer can help us immensely. Gita says that there are broadly 3 types of Karmas (action)

(a) Karma – Everything that we do, every action which we perform, can be termed as Karma if….

If…….

If we do it with the feeling of a doer. If you perform an action with the feeling that you ‘as a doer of that action’ are doing it then it is a Karma. Normal mundane tasks like supporting a family, doing a job, playing, watching TV, building a house, running a shop as well as the so called ascetic action of renouncing the world, taking Sanyas, breaking all relations with past life are also known as ‘Karma’ if done with the sense of a ‘doer’. They are all Karma.

(b) Akarma – What is A-karma. An action which is done without the feeling of a doer is akarma. When the feeling of a ‘doer’ is absent, every action is akarma.

(c) Vikarma -This is the third category of action. There are many things which happen on their own. Just like the huge natural phenomenon of revolution of earth, arrival of weather etc, if we observe from a physical human level – the beating of heart, the breathing of air, the circulation of blood in body etc are all actions which are happening on their own. Our heart does not ask us, “would you like to pump me? it just goes on. Our blood does not ask us for circulation, it just flow on its own. The same is true for breathing, we may regulate our inhalation and exhalation but certainly we can’t control it. It’ll continue on its own.

The message of Gita :

To put it simply – Observe your life carefully, contemplate over it, evaluate your experiences and you’ll find that everything is in the hand of cosmic choreographer. Realize this truth and align yourself in this cosmic flow. Surrender yourself into this huge game.

After all who are you ? Nobody asked you – Would you like to born on earth? You just came in this world. Nobody asked you – “would you like to be born as an American, a European, Asian or African? You just received any of these identities. Nobody asked,” Would you like to be a Christian, Muslim or Hindu ? You just born in a family which practise a particular religion. Nobody ask you -”Would you like to remain a child? You have no control over your growth. You can’t stop your childhood turning into teenage, a teenage into youth and a youth into an old age. They’ll all happen without your control. And one day- nobody will ask you – Would you like to die? One day your eyes will close forever. You will go into the deepest of all sleeps – death.

It’s only a matter of perspective. Just be a little analytical in your observation. You’ll amazed to find that almost everything in your life is beyond your control .

So what is the lesson ?: When nothing is in your control, why become tense and stressful by trying to control things. Why not we all perform our task with the best of our capabilities and leave the rest on ‘Cosmic Choreographer’ to decide ? Let the existence do what it wants. Just be in the flow.

Best actions are those which are done without feeling of a doer:

I know that there is nothing new in what you just read above. Many of you may feel a feeling of deja-vu. However, the fact is that eternal truths are same everywhere. They don’t change. They are as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago.

Try to make all your actions Akarmas : the actions which are done without a feeling of the doer. All these actions will make us more free, more playful, and more calm.

Don’t do anything with the feeling that you are doing it yourself. Just be an instrument in the hand of existence. Let it do what it wants to accomplish through you. This cosmic play is going on. We may choose to be playful with it or we may choose to fight with it. Be a little meditative. Be still and know. We all are puppets in the hands of cosmic strings. So let us surrender ourselves to this existence. No matter who we are, where we are, what we are doing, let us do it in a non-attached manner. Only one thing is required – A firm faith in the cosmic play, A belief in existence.

Jumping into the unknown appears a risky and insecure step. but sometime an open insecurity becomes the safest place. Just for once – Stop fighting with your fate, with your circumstances. Accept the world as it is. Believe in existence, be still in meditation and stop doing anything by placing yourself in the center. Put aside yourself and let the existence do what it wants to do through you. You’ll amazed by the inner peace you’ll got from this.
