Soon MetaReciclagem became an open network with hundreds of members in all regions of Brazil working with critical appropriation of ICTs. Through a strong emphasis on DIY and low tech, all sorts of used equipment are seen as instrumental, educational and artistic source materials that can be disassembled and remixed, giving youngsters access to infrastructure, networking, knowledge and opportunities, working towards a future interconnected and a common-based economy. Why? They acted like anthropologists, studying the Lift attendees in their “natural habitat” to find ways of improving the future Lift Experience. Frog used a number of methods to gather insights, and looked for some volunteers to self-document their conference experience. These volunteers participated in a special brainstorming workshop. Results of this first-time ever “Lift under the design microscope” program are shared by Elizabeth Roche and Adam Richardson at the end of the conference. Money restricts the tools we choose to stay connected. Yet it cannot keep us away from the internet. We are connected all of the time to a worldwide web that does not sleep or take breaks, the spread of information is instantaneous. Social networks have absorbed an overwhelming proportion of the young population, which has thoroughly incorporated this new and constantly evolving connectivity into their everyday lives. What is really going on?
