The event is an OPEN tournament and registration is open to all amateur registered golf players. Registrations are taken until the date of May 31 , 2012, 12:00.

- Players should be amateurs as it is specified in the Regulations of the amateur status.

- Protguard Golf Cup Trophy will take place on the 18 holes course, in Stable ford system, and it will comply to the Golf Regulations approved by Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews and to the local regulations.

- Flights will be set by Sport Committee, according to the list of registered players until deadline and will start from many tees.

- There are not accepted more than 3 hits over hole par.

We are delighted to announce the start of the MercedesTrophy golf tournament series for a second consecutive year in Bulgaria. MercedesTrophy is by far the world largest and oldest amateur golf event gathering over 60 000 customers and friends of the brand from 60 participating countries in 2011 only.

Tournament rules

MercedesTrophy Bulgaria 2012 is held under the auspices of the Bulgarian Golf Association. The tournament is played under the rules of BGA and the local rules of the hosting clubs. The rules of the BGA adhere to the rules of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews. 

Qualifications

The qualifications will be held over three tournament days – May 24, 25, and 26, 2012, at three golf courses – Thracian Cliffs, BlackSeaRama и Lighthouse. The previous day, May 23 is a practice day. Each division plays consecutively the three courses over the three tournament days. The overall ranking is done on the basis of the cumulative result of each player from the three tournament days. 

The competition format is individual stableford in three handicap divisions:

Division A up to 12.4

Division B from 12.5 to 24.4

Division C from 24.5 to 36 

Division A plays gross, Division B & C play net. 

The highest three ranked players win in-kind prizes provided by the sponsors. In addition, youngest player, best female player, nearest-to-the-pin and longest drive prizes are awarded. 

The 24 highest ranked players from each division qualify for the National Final. Eligible to play are persons from all ages, nationality and place of permanent residence. All participants are eligible to ranking and wining in-kind prizes. Only the following categories are eligible to qualify for the National Final: 

- Permanent residents of Bulgaria;

- Players who are 18 years of age and older;

- Players who hold official handicap of maximum 36. 

Organisational fee of BGN 150 for the three tournament days is charged to all participants. 

National Final

The National Final is played in one tournament day on June 23, 2012 at Pirin Golf & Country Club. The previous day, June 22, is a practise day. All divisions play the Ian Woosnam Course at Pirin Golf & Country Club and the ranking is done on the basis of each player’s results from the tournament day of the National Final only.

The competition format is individual stableford in three handicap divisions: 

Division A up to 12.4

Division B from 12.5 to 24.4

Division C from 24.5 to 36 

Division A plays gross, Division B & C play net. 

The highest ranked player of each division (three players in total) qualifies for the World Finals. They form Team Bulgaria. In addition, the three highest net ranked players of each division receive in-kind prizes, provided by the sponsors; youngest player, best female player, nearest-to-the-pin and longest drive prizes are also awarded. 

All players with permanent residence in Bulgaria, who are 18 years of age and older, and who hold official handicap of maximum 36 are eligible to play at the National Final. All participants are eligible to ranking and winning in-kind prizes. Only Mercedes-Benz owners who have not participated in previous World Finals are eligible to qualify for Team Bulgaria.

The tournament organisers reserve the right to make amendments to the programme and the rules of the event. The organisers together with the BGA reserve the right of final say on the tournament rules and their application.

November 17th, Belek, Antalya, Turkey – The International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) named Bulgaria as the 2012 Undiscovered Golf Destination of the Year. The announcement headlined the organization’s Awards Ceremony & Gala Dinner which took place at the magnificent Cornelia Diamond Resort in Belek, Turkey on Thursday 17th November 2011 on the final night of the annual International Golf Travel Market.

The Award

The Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism of Bulgaria Mr Traycho Traykov received the Award for Undiscovered Golf Destination of the Year together with representatives of the Bulgarian Golf Association. This award represents a great honour and recognition for Bulgaria and, in particular, for its fast developing golf industry.

The IAGTO Awards were established in 2000 to reward a few exceptional contributions to the world of golf travel. The Undiscovered Golf Destination of the Year is voted for by the International Golf Travel Writers Association (IGTWA), incorporating 159 of the world’s leading golf travel journalists in 33 countries. Tasked with identifying an “undiscovered gem” among the world’s golf destinations, members assess each nomination against the following criteria:

• To what extent the destination is “undiscovered”;
• Qualities that make it an interesting golf destination;
• Attractiveness of the region and courses;
• Quality and accessibility of the courses;
• Standard of accommodations;
• Friendliness of the staff;
• Value for money and Speed of Play;
• Climate.

This is the second year in a row when Bulgaria has been among the nominees in this prestigious category. The top six finalists for the 2012 award were Bulgaria, Colombia, Iceland, Mississippi, India and Galicia, Spain.

So what distinguished Bulgaria apart from this tough competition?

 The country is a mosaic of rich historic and cultural traditions, culinary delights, recreational pursuits and natural beauties. Bulgaria has earned an international reputation among ‘foodies’ for its world famous yoghurt and red wines, among the seekers of le joie de vivre for its Rose valley, numerous sea, ski and Spa resorts and among the connoisseurs of historical heritage for its ancient treasures and remains of old civilizations. Above all, the hospitality of Bulgarians is unmatched.

Bulgarian Golf Development

 The Award for Undiscovered Golf Destination is a crowning moment for the country which made its first steps in golf in the beginning of the new Millenium. The Bulgarian Golf Association was established in 2001. In 2003 started the construction of St. Sofia Golf Club & SPA, the first 18-hole golf course in Bulgaria. Оn October 22, 2011 the golf tournament for the Cup of the President of Lighthouse Golf Club was held. The nice weather, competitive spirit and the hospitality of the Lighthouse Golf Resort attracted many golfers to take part in the last tournament for this season. The close race was in two divisions - A and B.

There was a separate division for our young  players - teenagers age of 6, as the smallest player - Nicholas Papillon, who also received a small trophy as an incentive and support for his participation. The generous prizes provided by the club president Mr. George Tchouklev were won in both divisions:
