The ARTS Award is a yearlong process of nominations by a panel of judges and voting by designers, manufacturers, retailers and other industry professionals. Suspended Lighting Named a Top Trend Based on the 2012 NKBA Design Competition

The National Kitchen & Bath Association reviewed 500 design entries before choosing the winners for the 2012 NKBA Design Competition, which were recently announced at the annual NKBA show in Chicago. Among these 500 designs rose some overarching ideas that seem to point to the top trends currently prevailing in the interior design world. One of the ten trends identified was suspended lighting. As the NKBA noted about this trend, suspended lighting can be used to achieve a variety of effects.

“. . . In kitchen design the result is dangling focal points that drop light onto defined areas of countertop, dining surfaces or flooring. The result can also be artistic pieces of sculpture that contribute to the visual appeal of a space, exuding light, glimmer and glitz.”

To help you visualize this trend, the NKBA singled out one of the design entries that successfully demonstrated suspended lighting: a kitchen design by Mary Lou Kalmus from the Chicag0-based firm, Designing Edge Interiors. In this urban loft kitchen, Kalmus created a focal point with three shaded pendants and complemented them with angled spotlights for a final look that is rustic-industrial while still warm and welcoming.

Install a transformer that is larger than you may need initially so that it can support more fixtures later and you won’t have to upgrade when adding to your outdoor lighting design.
Three to fourth path lights can adequately illuminate a pathway up to 60 feet long.
Add a timer or photocell to conserve energy consumption.
