A Very Smurfy Director

This Christmas it'll be all about the Chipmunks, but in 2010 The Smurfs will own the holiday.

"Smurfs", the movie based on little, blue characters from the 80's TV show, has a director. Raja Gosnell will do the honors. He's best known for his work on the Scooby Doo movies.

Weasley Attacked by Swine!

Actor Rupert Grint, who plays Ron Weasley in the "Harry Potter" films, recently came down with the Swine Flu.

"I thought, am I going to die?", he told reporters. Fortunately Grint just ended-up having a sore throat and he stayed in bed for a few days.

"Ice Age" and "Ice Age: The Meltdown" are two of the most popular animated films of the past decade. The original was nominated for an Oscar back in 2003, and combined they made over $1 billion dollars worldwide. So it's no surprise that we now have a third.

Transforming the Race for #1

"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" did some huge numbers at the box office despite the harsh reviews. In fact it nearly beat "The Dark Knight" for the largest 5-day opening of all-time: "The Dark Knight" - $203.8M "Transformers-2" - $201.2M.

The Oscars Go Double

It's been announced by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (the Academy Awards people) that the Best Picture category is being expanded from 5 to 10 nominees.

Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland", which opens on March 5th 2010 in 3-D and IMAX 3-D, stars Johnny Depp, Helena Bonheim Carter, Anne Hathaway and "Frost/Nixon"'s Michael Sheen. Disney has released photos of the cast including Depp as the Mad Hatter.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (PG-13) D

The original "Transformers" was a surprise hit back in the summer of 2007, grossing $319 million. This new sequel will also do well in the box office, but it's not nearly as good as the first film.

In "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen", Sam (Shia LaBeouf) is off to college.

Indy 5 is Alive!

Shia LaBeouf has let the cat out of the bag. There will be an "Indiana Jones 5".

LaBeouf told the BBC News earlier this week that Steven Spielberg has cracked a story on "Indiana Jones 5" and that the production team is gearing-up for the film.

What a difference one year can make!

In 2008 Jack Black voiced the lovable Po in the animated hit "Kung Fu Panda", and was very funny in my favorite film of the year, "Be Kind Rewind". However, in his first film of 2009, Black is not lovable or funny.

Here's a look at Mickey Rourke from "Iron Man 2" (thanks to Paramount Pictures). The sequel to last year's gigantic hit is set to be released May 7, 2010. If they were selling tickets today, theaters would be sold out.

Eddie Murphy's family comedy, "Meet Dave", was one of the major disappointments of 2008. Well, he's bounced back nicely with his latest film, "Imagine That".

Murphy plays Evan Danielson, a financial advisor and divorced father who isn't a great dad.

Actuals vs. Estimates

This past weekend, "Up" was originally reported to be the box office winner. But that was according to estimates. But on Monday the actual results were announced, and it turns out that "The Hangover" was really #1, since it beat "Up" by about $900,000.

If "Land of the Lost" is a big hit, we could see some of the other Sid and Marty Krofft kids shows from the '70's on the big screen. "H.R. Pufnstuf" would be an obvious choice and the "Banana Splits", those 4 wacky gorillas in a rock band, would make a great movie.
