Box Office Bombs

Two movies that I saw this past week, "The Express" and "City of Ember", both performed poorly at the box office. "The Express" grabbed $4.7M and "Ember" took in only $3.2M.

"City of Ember" is based on the popular novel about a future world in which the remaining people on Earth live in an underground city that is falling apart.

Too Much "Bolt"

Disney is making a big mistake in their promotion of the upcoming animated movie, "Bolt." Before family films and during trailers, the studio is showing actual clips of the film. Long clips. Five minute clips.

'Tis the season for football and football films. In late August Keke Palmer showed-off her Pop Warner skills in "The Longshots." Now, with "The Express", Universal takes the sport to the next level.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua (PG) C

In the trailers for Disney's "Beverly Hills Chuhuahua" the dogs called this, "the greatest Chihuahua movie of all-time." Well, it's definitely the FIRST Chihuahua movie of all-time, but that doesn't mean that it's good.

Paul Newman 1925-2008

It was certainly sad news last weekend when word came out that Paul Newman had died at the age of 83. His most famous roles, from the dozens of movies he made, were in the films "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and "Cool Hand Luke.

Disney Cranks It Up

Disney has a very busy end of the year coming-up with the releases of "Beverly Hills Chihuahua", "High School Musical 3", "Bolt" and the re-release of "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas.

It's part "Frankenstein", part "The Nightmare Before Christmas" rip-off. But the problem with "Igor" is: none of the parts fit.

This first animated film of the Fall movie season is a major disappointment.

Running Late...Turns Out Great

My dad and I got a late start heading to see "Igor" the other night. When we got to the theater the "Regal First Look" was already underway (I usually try to catch the entire "First Look"). And the place was packed. In fact most of the upper level of the theater was filled.

Room For Improvement "At The Movies"

Week One of the newest edition of the TV movie review show, "At The Movies", now starring Ben Lyons and Ben Mankiewicz, was not very good. The two Ben's did not seem comfortable with each other or the set, which looked very cheap.

Voice-Over Legend Passes On

A few days ago one of the all-time greats in the movie business, Don LaFontaine, passed away. He was only 68 years old. You knew him best as the movie trailer voice-over guy. In his 33 year career he did over 5,000 trailers and more than 30,000 commercials.

I enjoyed seeing "The Longshots" the other night. However, the audience was the worst behaved of any movie I've ever seen. And that's why I'm writing this blog.

"The Longshots" is inspired by the true story of Jasmine Plummer, who was the first girl to ever play Pop Warner football. Keke Palmer does a nice job as Plummer, who learns football from her uncle, who's played by Ice Cube.

At first everyrone on the team makes fun of Jasmine because she's a girl.
