Eat Pray Love - Durga Puja in Bangalore 2010

Hope you all had a nice time during Durga Puja/Dussera.

This year I had a set motive of capturing the Durga Puja in Bangalore through my lens in a bit unconventional way. The new addition to my kitty of Canon 85mmf/1.8 helped me a lot to set different perspectives and shoot under low lights. Almost all of my images are taken with this glass mounted on my Canon 7D.
I better let the images do the talking now.

Life was like a breeze till the 20. Yes mind was full of hope and ambition but nothing to worry about. Someone was there always to take care of those things in life which are source of worries - money and responsibilities. The moments spent then may have been the best days of everyone's life.
20-30 spent much more on building a career, a family and all kind of earthly bonds. Now just stepping into the 30s life has created even more confusion over what was made by me till date.

Is the midlife crisis creeping in too soon ?
Wish to get back to carefree playful times at least for some time.

You can selectively choose whom you want you to see online on Facebook.
Just a bit of setup is needed.
Click Home Menu > More > Create New List

Create a new list categorizing your connections.
For e.g School Firends or Colleagues etc.

After you create a new list , Facebook chat box will show your online friends according to the new list.
Now toggle your online status for the friends in the list simply using the switch attached to the list name on the chat box.
Bingo !!

Graveyard bound

The St Peter's Protestant Cemetery along Hosur Road (commonly known as Shantinagar Cemetery) is the second oldest cemetery in Bangalore. My research on this cemetery says, this graveyard was mostly meant for the British Soldiers stationed in and around Bangalore and their families. Also owing to its age, it is very evident to find very intricate marble stone Victorian style; epitaphs, ornates and statues here. All these caught my interest to plan for a shoot at this place.

But this was my second visit. Last time I went to this cemetery it was late in the evening. I wanted to capture the eerie atmosphere of a graveyard in the darkness. That was thrill. See some images from that shoot here.

But this time, I wanted to record the age old fine work of sculptures laying there for centuries. Also preferred the early morning to shoot in the warm low lights of morning.
Also hoped for some mists which can add effects to the images. But I presume, the early morning plan on a November morning detered the BWSians who planned for the shoot to drop out finally.
The head count remained very low of 4 - Me, Rajesh(bluemoondream) , Abhi(new-kid on the block), Akash(late entrant).

The front entry gate of the graveyard is old,well maintained and resembled Gothic style in its architecture. An avenue starting the arched gate will take you to the centre of the graveyard. There is a memorial tomb at the centre and has been painted dumb white. Assuming the tomb to be the centre the graveyard is logically divided into four sectors. We found some morning walkers inside. We too had a brisk walk and then planned to disperse and shoot. For that we had to get off the hard road and step into the soft soils of the graveyard.

We criss-crossed the graves being careful enough not to step them over to reach close to a prominent marble stone figure and seemed very familiar. It took a bit of time for me to flutter around with the search , but my memory responded back with the result - Ayashok's Flickr photostream . Good God .... you never know where on earth you can go if bitten by a shutter bug !!

Those old statues and ornates where beautifully crafted and can be termed as "real gem of an art". They demanded to be well preserved in a museum. The morning lights lended beautiful warm colors on marble stone. The mosses that have set up their colony on these abandoned statues added a contrasting tone also. Might be they were destined to be perished in the graveyard reading a human's epitaph.

But the sad part part is that none of these statues are intact. Battered by time, bruised by ignorant visitors, and gradual phasing out of the old graves to make place for the new has left these art works into dire straits !! The beautiful white marble Victorian crosses are gradually out numbered by black crosess of granite or iron !! Very soon the old graves will be phased out leaving very few tombs of artistic interests. Anyways, that is the law of Nature(or nature of Law)!!

Strolling around in the yard, I found out this gravedigger in his job, Bahadur, a Nepali immigrant! He was almost done with his job of recycling a grave. The trench was almost his neck deep.
He lit a fire near to the compound wall to burn off the remains of the existing grave he just dug up. He and his family are the only inhabitant of that graveyard.

They stay in a small house at the farthest corner of the graveyard. I also found his grandchildren Nisha, Isha and Manoj. It seemed that the whole graveyard was their playground.
See how varied the perspective of life is. What can be a challenge to a daring youth is just a way of living for some kids like Nisha & Isha. !!

I felt almost done and planned to leave and that is when Akash made his entry. He was asking for a female model to shoot in the graveyard. Without that he seemed not much enthusiastic about shooting in the grave !!

My 3 most notable findings in the shoot :
1. Two neighbouring souls though lying side by side had a difference of 100 years when laid. 1908 & 2008.
2. Though Bahadur assured that a grave can be recycled after 5 years, Abhi found a full intact skull and bones inside a bush !!
Interesting subject for Abhi but I shunned shooting it.
3. The blacks are vanquishing the whites very fast. I am talking about the crosses. I feel, very soon the "graveyard artworks" will be gone !! O Lord save them.

!! Bijoya Greetings to All !!
Bijaya Dashami, which coincides with the Dussera, marks the end of five day long Durga Puja festival.
With a heavy heart the Bengalis immerse the clay idol of Durga in the sacred Ganges bidding her goodbye and earnestly waiting to see her again the next year. The immersion ceremony is called "Bishorjon".
After immersion, men follow the customary 'Kolakuli' (embrace each other). The younger members do pronam (touching the feet) to the elders.
Durga Puja is a festival, which is celebrated by Bengalis all round the globe without religious inhibitions. This kind of socio- cultural celebration tends to renew kinship with friends and relatives.

It is a big bad world outside for these dumb creatures. Some lost a leg when hit by a car or someone was badly beaten and bruised. Some are even abandoned by those people whom they loved the most. There are numerous stories of pain,rejection and distress. But hopefully now they are very safe. They are enjoying there life in the "Garden of Eden".And this garden is the Shelter Home of a local NGO in Hebbal.This organisation has been working for welfare of animals for long and is synonymous with animal advocacy and welfare. They have many wins under their name fighting to protect the interest and welfare of animals, wild and domestic.

All abandoned animals are welcome to this shelter. It has a complete veterinary hospital setup with good doctors. The hospital and the administrative office surrounds the periphery of the compound. Dogs, cats, cows, calves, pups, kittens, rabbits all have made this there home. The central courtyard is their playground.

But the dogs enjoys the freedom the best. They are everywhere, loitering and lazing around at their own pace and will. The play area for the pups is a very attractive zone. Jumping, dodging, running, sleeping all their antics are worth watching.

No sooner you reach the the play area boundary than you will find all the puppies running towards you and then poking their nose high up in the air trying to reach you.Its fun and very cute not to be photographed !!

The kittens are in a closed area. But once you enter their play area you have act on their will. They will jump on your lap and they will make you cuddle. Bet you cannot avoid that. These playful tiny tots seemed to be seasoned models also :-)

Not only dogs and cats but cows, oxes, rabbits, guinea pigs all are sharing this small beautiful place in harmony.I had a real nice time with these animals.These fools dont take your permission to make you their own.And that is everything which matters - an unconditional love !!

The abandoned animals are being rescued, revived and rehabilitated in this small home. But they cannot be supported here for a long period. They has to adopted to have their own home. Our initiative in this matter can make a lot of difference.

Who ate my Pie ?

How often have you wished to draw your salary at least twice a month? As the salary gets credited, we formulate plans to save more for this month. We resolve firmly not to make any impulsive buying. But, in spite of practising the "epitome of frugality", we find ourselves starting the countdown for the month. It might be then a week and sometimes even more to spare.
"Then.... where is my money going ?". We keep on asking this ourselves. The month ends in the process. The query gets buried down by the delight of seeing the rejuvenated balance on our bank account. And, the cycle repeats !!
But, don't you want this mystery to be solved ? If your answer is "NO", my readers are free to quit from this point. Otherwise, I would like to share some views and methods which I follow or practise, to solve this "mystery". These views or discussion might be spanning multiple posts. Hence, I would like to request my readers to keep a watch on my posts.

It is evident and obvious, that you and only you have the supreme control over your own hard earned money. No one else has the access or authority to use your money. You are the gateway between your income and expense. You watch it go in and out, but still you are fazed to find out what's in and what's out. How is that possible !!

The problem lies in the fact that we have too many entry and exit gates to our money storehouse. Unlike our father and forefathers, we have keep track of multiple gates for our incomes and expenses. And, I think that is the real cause of this problem. Too many things at a time generally confuses our brain. We cannot watch all of them together. Hence, to make things simple we ignore some of them. That is where we give our money enough freedom to fly away !!

So, let's start digging into the mystery more. We will adopt a "track n trap" approach. That is, out of some probable "exit points" we will pick one at a time, analyze it and plug it. If the point cannot be closed totally at least we can narrow it up such that we we do not over spend.
