Light and Breezy

Built in the early 1990s in the secluded heart of Inanda in Johannesburg, this Carmel Back-designed home was destined to become a modern classic. ‘It has good bones,’ says interior designer Sandra Bowler, ‘and has stood the test of time.’ Fifteen years on, however, the owners felt that they wanted a change. The couple had briefly considered the idea of a new build or cluster, but they knew that their home’s location and clean, uncluttered lines would be hard to beat. Instead they opted to enhance the existing space and give it a lighter, more updated look.

Glass tables grouped together in the garden room. The custom-designed rug is from Paco and the black Twiggy lamp by Mark Sadler for Foscarini.

A charcoal sofa fabric helps anchor the double-volume space.

The guest room features soothing white tones complemented by natural hues.

The original dark granite flooring was replaced with oiled oak floors.

The new breakfast room functions as a cosy dining space, or as a ‘servery’ when the owners entertain. The server, as well as the Eero Saarinen Tulip chairs and table for Knoll, are all from Tonic

In the master bedroom a mirrored wall reflects the greenery beyond. The rug is from Paco, the metallic chest of drawers is from Block and Chisel Interiors and the lamp is from La Grange Interiors.

Neutral colours create a calm feeling in the main bedroom.

James Huniford blends new and old, uniting found objects with refined materials in distinctive combinations and vignettes. Whether it’s the gentle curve of a whale bone or the circular repetition of oversized gears, one-of-a-kind objects inspire all of Huniford’s designs. His signature use of calming wall colors highlights the importance of objects, art, and furniture, as a canvas does for a painter.

“Interiors should be tailored to how people live,” says Ford. “Rooms should flow from one area to another and not have themes. Most importantly, they should reflect the spirit and soul of the people who inhabit them. “

A self-taught designer, Ford was selected by Architectural Digest as one of the “Top 100 Designers.” His work has appeared in the American, Italian and French editions of Architectural Digest, Elle Décor, W, Vogue, the New York Times, and House Beautiful, among others. James Huniford has a unique ability to mix the clean lines of modern pieces with classic and vintage; here are some of his projects:

Manhattan House – A blend of custom furniture and repurposed antiques create a tranquil atmosphere.

Bridgehampton House – This Hamptons retreat is filled with one of a kind furniture and craftsman details.

Loft – This loft, with its dramatic spaces, demanded a stylish, streamlined look with a warm palette.

It’s been a pretty hectic week with my car in for repairs after a minor accident. To be honest, it took some carefull planning and manoeuvering to have everyone at their respective engagements and on time. Talk about dusting off the organising skills! I am so looking forward to the weekend…

Maybe spend some time at the pool and have a barbeque late afternoon…

The Cross Decor & Design brings a style to Vancouver that is often seen in European homes and magazines – a relaxed feeling, complimented with beautifully appointed luxury items and found objects, and exquisite furnishings.

Their Millennium Water Project is one that I just have to share. Bright whites and pinks with floral and french accents and a touch of modern. Unlikely combinations, but simply a beautiful space…

Not your Average little Seaside pad

To live in Sweden, is to live in well aired spaces, it seems. It is all about the balance between form & function and decorations are kept at an elegant minimum. This 105 square meter apartment’s hub is the open plan living room with a furniture set in woven wood fibers. It is located in Saltsjöbaden, right by the Baltic Sea—hence the ships, rope motifs and sailors featured throughout.

Anything but your average little seaside pad

Simplicity rules supreme, from the floating bar in the kitchen with built-in appliances, to the dining table for six. Of course, creativity also abound, as seen in the immaculately white wall covered in minute mosaic tiles, or the regally sized chairs around the dining table.

The view opens up to the adjoining street, with its quiet homes and rustling tree branches. Meanwhile, somewhere not too far off in the distance the Baltic sea lapse at the shore and the white boats gently bounce up and down its soft, nurturing waves.
