Dominating Your World

Dominating Your World

I recently had the sincere pleasure of partaking in the inaugural World Domination Summit, held in Portland, Oregon, and kicked off by Chris Guillebeau.

A domination summit, you ponder? Derived from core ideologies of non-comformist strategists and thought leaders, the very rough blueprint offers a starting point for doing your best life's work. Finding a sense of connectivity in your day-to-day, breaking stereotypical norms, and following your true passions.

I was uncertain what I would find. Realizing the experience wasn't going to resemble a traditional entrepreneurial business conference—far from it—I peeled back my ears and eyes to new people and new ideas. I left more energized for the future than I could have imagined.

Now back in Denver, I've had a difficult time processing all that I learned from the experiences and people groups I came across. Most stories were laced with finding a greater purpose in life, but none held the same course, and that was exciting.

Portland has always piqued my interest. West coast, progressive, and a place that comes with a laundry list of high praise. On recommendation from the gracious and talented Ian Coyle, I was able to book it to Grüner, which is close to Powell Books, Ace Hotel, and the recently sold Stumptown Coffee. Little did I know, it would be the start of an inspiring weekend. By 3pm on Thursday, I met the first conference arrivals at the newly renovated Crystal Hotel.

The meat of the conference was held Saturday and Sunday, and after a gathering rang in the event Friday evening, we were off. The weekend consisted of a whirlwind of speakers, from Zen habit architects and imaginative Firebowl artists, to Firestarters and big dreamers. It was perhaps the furthest thing from a stereotypical business-focused conference I could imagine.

Thankfully, long days were kept copacetic with food cart socials and afternoon breaks, but even they were met with longer nights as we conversed with new friends whilst exploring local offerings. All the while, we met new attendees, discussed where we'd been, and more importantly, where we aim to be.

Approximately one month later, I still can't seem to capture the essence of WDS through words. I'm very aware, though, that the group of people that landed in PDX on that particular weekend were of a different breed—focused on business ideas and larger inspirations rather than bragging rights.

It was, to me, a rewarding experience. And from it I took a few things to re-focus on: awareness, humility, and more time to slow down.

How will you dominate your world?

Colorado Mountain Club to embrace web improvements

Colorado Mountain Club to embrace web improvements

At its roots, the Golden-based Colorado Mountain Club aims to "gather and disseminate information regarding the Colorado mountains in the areas of art, science, literature and recreation." And, among other pro-outdoor initiatives, a driving force has been always been "advocating for the preservation of the alpine regions."

The CMC recently approached Limber Creative with challenges of online progress, recognizing that its ever-expanding member base is continually attracting outdoor enthusiasts by the masses. In an effort to harness the power of digital information delivery, core web improvement goals were brought to the Limber team in earnest. Among the group's initiatives, a redesign and restructuring of current information was key, knowing that almost 35% of current web visitors arrive to view the list of outdoor activities, trips, and local and regional preservation outings.

With sincere personal passions for alpine regions and initiatives that support them, Limber Creative will work with the CMC's programming team to incorporate and update the design and layout through the Drupal content management system. Limber will also be providing ongoing web consult for the blossoming organization's web outreach.

Collaborating with Denver’s Collaboratory

Web designers can be pretty competitive. Let's face it. It's an every-man-for-himself kind of game, where referrals are often frowned upon and collaborations are a rarity.

Yet, in Denver, Colorado, a place famous for an independent pioneer spirit, three separate web design companies are sharing space and collaborating on a daily basis. The Collaboratory is the aptly-named shared office space of Artletic, 525Creative and Limber Creative. Matt Crest of Artletic, KC Dunstan of 525Creative and Chris Arnold of Limber Creative work together during the week, yet maintain their own development projects and clients. The shared space allows for brainstorming sessions, critiques and occasional joint efforts. On the last Wednesday of every month, the Collaboratory invites two creatives to spend a day using "laptop space" at the studio and reaping the benefits of fresh perspectives and an atmosphere of inspiration and support.

CA ERwin expands internationally

CA ERwin expands internationally

Just under two years ago Limber Creative helped inspire and reinvent CA Technologies' ERwin Data Modeling web presence. Recently, the success of its initial iteration evolved into much more of an international sensation. Coinciding with the launch of the new ERwin r8 platform, the website enjoyed a minor facelift while it's borders expanded across the globe, encompassing much if Europe, Latin America, and soon, Japan.

The ERwin Data Modeling team required new ways for users to quickly access product information within an already information-rich and complex topic. Adding to these layers came the need to look forward with an international eye. ERwin Data Modeling anticipates that 2011 will usher in up to 8 entirely independent regional websites, all locally translated and updated.

ExpressionEngine remains the driving force behind such improvements, serving as the hub for all international websites and splash pages for the ever-evolving site. In ERwin's own words, the site is methodically evolving and, in fact, "Visualizing the Power" of its data.

You can watch ERwin grow at http://erwin.com.

Entwined website to bring awareness to artisans of handmade textiles

The name Entwined is symbolic of Artistry that Criss Crosses the Globe, and for owner Cyndi Maupin it means very much to see such a concept succeed. The driven entrepreneur made her vision clear from the onset.

"Our goal is to become a philanthropic company that unites women from third world countries with women in the United States. By purchasing unique gifts and textiles from these global artists, we'll be able to provide money for these women while telling their stories online."

With textile product in consistent development, the website build began in early September and will continue through the Fall. In an effort to unite an online ordering capability with unique story telling, the website, built on ExpressionEngine, will consist of a full online catalog alongside a growing network of female artisans from across the globe. Backed by a meaningful design scheme developed through EnZed Design, we're pleased to be a part of the team bringing this concept to life.

"We have a responsibility of giving back to the community and making global awareness a priority in women's plights." If all goes to plan the Entwined website will make its debut this Winter season.

Limber Creative helps spawn collaborative studio environment

Limber Creative helps spawn collaborative studio environment
Roughly 20 months ago, two independent design firms decided to share in studio space to cut costs and engage in a collaborative working environment. Flash forward to modern day, add in a freshly rehabbed studio space in downtown Edgewater, Colorado, and suddenly the "Collaboratory" studio space we reside in on a daily basis became much more than it once was.

With the hope and goal of promoting collaboration amongst fellow creative minds, the three businesses who now share the studio—525creative, Artletic, and Limber Creative—came up with a vision to bring through creative talent once a month.

Limber Creative jumped at the chance to concept for this new project, drawing from turn-of-the-century typography and a mindset that the history of downtown Edgewater should be kept alive. Careful not to generate too much of a modern flavor in such a historical area, the final design was a rebirth of traditional advertising styles: through type selection, imagery, and visual cues.

As the recently launched LetsCollab.org website explains, "We believe that meeting new creatives and sparking thoughtful conversation is a must. Encouraging knowledge sharing and different viewpoints is why Collaboratory exists in the first place."

The concept itself is pretty simple: Once a month, up to two creatives are welcome to join us by taking up "laptop space" on our conference table. These individuals will have a typical business day: calls, emails, and all of the norms that come with it. All the while, we'll converse, lend a helping hand to one another, grab a bite to eat, and see where the day takes us.

Our feeling is that if we can meet 5, 10, or 25 new people over the course of a few months and years, we're connecting with that many more intelligent, exciting minds. It betters our business, our skills, and our creative outlets. Do you want to join us, too?

Visit the LetsCollab.org site and submit your request today.

Redbud’s Raw website to promote healthier pet lifestyle, community
Despite seeking out quality raw food for his beloved dogs, it was nearly impossible for Redbud's Raw Dog Food owner, Jim Adams, to be truly happy with his findings. Through positive experiences feeding raw to his pets, and with a desire to better other pet owners' loved ones, Jim knew he had to make it easier. His solution? Launch a high-end raw dog food product line to spread the word.

"Raw food is better for your dog. If it makes sense for your pet's size and your budget, you'll immediately begin to see improvement." Jim notes how dogs on a raw diet will show a better coat, grow nicer nails, and can even yield cleaner teeth and, ah-hem, fresher breath. Redbud's mission, among other things, is to promote the benefits of raw dog food and spread the gospel of a healthier pet to all of their owners.

With product reaching consumers by early summer 2010, the Redbud's website will encompass a full offering of informational, community, and ordering features. User submitted photos and stories will be a highlight to the site, which will take aim at building a strong community of pet enthusiasts and Redbud's followers. To make purchasing even easier, the site will also include an ordering area that users can take advantage of with only a few clicks.

Pet owners will surely be hearing a few healthier "woofs" this summer, as the Redbud's website is tentatively set to launch this July. On behalf of your dog(s), see you there!

ExpressionEngine at SXSW Interactive 2010

ExpressionEngine at SXSW Interactive 2010
Content management systems have been long debated in the interactive industry. Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla, and ExpressionEngine hold a majority of the votes, and it's easy to see why. Each of these platforms have qualities various designers and developers have come to enjoy.

At SXSW Interactive 2010, the ExpressionEngine community was in full force and, as a strong believers in the EE platform, we found ourselves at all of the ExpressionEngine events. Curiously enough, none of the events focused on the downsides of other platforms, but remained steadfast in the positive aspects that EE brings to the table.

This brought to light the terrific, consistent online community that makes EE users so steadfast in their claims of the (almost!) "perfect" content management system. And, in keeping true to this style of appreciation, some of the best creative minds in the web industry (Happy Cog, among others) discussed, candidly, their intricacies when working with the system.

Having had a few weeks to think back to these presentations, personal conversations, and general observations in the ExpressionEngine community, it's clear that EE is a terrific solution for many clients. Offering the key to content is critical, and EE allows clients to do just that—with ease. We're anxiously awaiting to see the next version of EE take hold in the professional world.

Questions about ExpressionEngine for your own site? Shoot us an email.

Limber Creative attends SXSW, brings back market-leading web ideas
Austin, Texas was recently home to the South by Southwest Interactive Festival; or as it's more affectionately known, SXSW. SXSW brings together top thought leaders from each end of the globe. From designers, to developers, to big thinkers, the festival turned Austin into a massive interactive think tank on consecutive spring days this year.

In the words of the conference literature itself, "SXSW Interactive features five days of compelling presentations from the brightest minds in emerging technology, scores of exciting networking events hosted by industry leaders and an unbeatable line up of special programs."

Denver-based Limber Creative made the trip to Austin to attend this multiple-day event, having to carefully select from a robust list of speakers and panels on topics ranging from web design and content management systems to Pixar-animated title sequences. Countless leading creative forces from top media and interactive markets were on hand to take in the event and shed light on their specific specialties.

The conference offered a traditional avenue to consume the latest information about the latest innovations and most current trends in web technologies. The trip was not only educational and informative, but also affirmative in nature.

With best practices in place for client management and project scheduling, and by remaining steadfast in the use of the ExpressionEngine content management system platform, the Limber Creative team was pleased to find their decisions among the top choices for other industry-leading firms.

Despite the curtain falling on another year at SXSW Interactive, Limber Creative remains excited for what's next. For more insight into this year's conference, read Designing Good to Great.
