Stumbled into blogging and used it as an outlet about topics related to personal development

2009 moved from Blogger to her own site

2010 trip to BlogWorld was a turning point because she met so many others where doing it full time.

Returned home and started hustling; building her list, making products.

2011 she was put on a project that she didn’t want to be a part of and asked to be taken off. They said no and one month later she resigned.

Quitting is not starting over. It’s taking the lessons and using them in the future.

Her blog gave her permission.

She started to see herself as one of them (an entrepreneur)

She felt held back for a long time and if she wasn’t going to quit her dreams were going to die

So much of the corporate world is spent doing busy work but not work that really solves any problems

People forget they even have potential

I have no business writing books but it fits me very well

I am in love with my failures

Fear of failure is a complete waste of time

Whenever there is failure there is discovery and learning

Andy Anderson + Kraig Spear, the makers of the official app for Seth Godin’s blog that was announced this week. In this interview Andy and Kraig explain how they took action very quickly in order to get considered for the project, what they did to ensure the project got finished on time and they talk about how we can all achieve what we want if we’re willing to take risks along the way. Pay particular attention to later in the interview when we ask you the listener to vote on a possible change to the app. So here’s Andy Anderson and Kraig Spear of Anderson and Spear.

On this episode of the Unofficial Linchpin podcast I talk with Michael Hyatt. He’s the author of the NYT best selling book Platform; Get noticed in a noisy world, a popular keynote speaker, he has a leadership role for the SCORRE and Launch Conferences. Mike is an equipper of writers and leaders through his blogging, products and teaching at MichaelHyatt.com.

I know you’re going to love this interview with Mike whether this your first time hearing from him or you’re a long time fan. In this 30 minute episode Mike talks about several topics publicly for the first time. We explored the blessings and curses of having a healthy on-line following and frankly I think it was a great conversation. If you have a question for me, feedback for this or other Linchpin episodes or have a guest you’d like for me to invite to be on the show call me at 615-200-TAKE or shoot me an email at feedback@takepermission.com.

Tribe demographics: Describe your tribe Mike. What’s their demographic as we sit here today at around a quarter of million people connected to you via your blog, email and twitter followers.

Over half male

93% are leaders

International audience is growing

Tribe growth: Give us a timeline of the growth of your tribe over the last five years?

700 visitors – 20,000 a month

Started being consistent three times a week

Some of the content got noticed by Lifehacker and other sites.

Got involved in social media (Twitter)

Most people quit before the inflection point

Keys to growing your tribe: Mike, what are the things you’ve done over the last five years that you attribute that growth to?

You feel the pressure to manage your image in a way that creates something artificial.

Unexpected realities of a large tribe: What have you experienced because of the size of your tribe that you were unprepared for? What have you done to fix that?

Being an introvert makes it hard to be known.

Shots come

Unexpected benefits of a large tribe: What are the greatest benefits of having a tribe?

A large platform gives you options

“I’ve never shared this publicly”

I was a literary midwife.

Motivation: How does having a large tribe affect your motivation?

I consider it an immense privilege.

It affects the quality of what I do. I don’t take anything lightly.

I forage for my tribe.

Satisfaction: What is the key to being satisfied in the size of your audience? Do you have a goal for followers, readers, buyers of your book, attendees at the SCORRE or Launch or Platform Conference (I know that one’s coming up in February).

You have to take into consideration what your strengths are

Strength Finders

Mike is an achiever so he has to see growth but

I don’t care where you are in your journey, you’re still in the middle of it.

Longevity: You know many famous people. Authors, musicians, artists, business people. Inevitably you’ve seen some of them handle their success well while others have had horrible experiences because of that same success. What advice do you have for people like myself that have a smaller tribe but want to be prepared for the growth so that I don’t experience the same personal failures you’ve seen others experience?

When the public life got ahead of their personal life.

I know when I’m in my danger zone when I’m not taking care of myself.

Self care is vital.

The root system is bigger than the actual oak tree

Show notes:

Thanks for joining me for another episode of the Unofficial Linchpin Podcast. Today I talk with Jeff Goins, a writer who lives in Tennessee who I believe is doing Linchpin work and also recently wrote a book called You are a writer that has helped ME do more of my own work as I pursue writing a book myself.

Here’s my interview with Jeff Goins…

http://goinswriter.com/

http://youareawriter.com/

You Are a Writer is an introduction to the wonderful, messy world of writing — and how it all begins with a simple mental shift that changes everything: You are a writer; you just need to write.

In this eBook, you will learn:

Why most writers struggle with confidence

How to stop waiting to be picked and start choosing yourself

The secret to getting your work published and your brand noticed

I’m joined today by Jeff Goins, a friend and author who in the last month released a book called “You are a writer”. After reading it, I knew I had to have him on the Linchpin podcast because you, the listener, need to hear what he has to say.

Thanks for being on the show today Jeff!

First, let me tell folks that they can find you at goinswriter.com and you’re on Twitter at JeffGoins. If folks want to leave a comment on this episode of the Linchpin podcast they can do that at LinchpinPodcast.com.

“I found my dream not by searching for it, but by submitting to what I had always hoped was true: I was, in fact, a writer. All I had to do was write. Anyone can do this. All it requires is a simple, scary solution: Believe you already are what you want to be. And then start acting like it.”

AND

“Writing is mostly a mind game. It’s about tricking yourself into becoming who you are. If you do this long enough, you begin to believe it. And pretty soon, you start acting like it.”

AND

“So I started saying I was a writer. I put it on my Facebook page. Included it in email signatures. Everywhere I could, I wrote that I was a writer. It was kind of ridiculous, but something crazy happened as a result of this campaign. It actually worked.”

Is that a form of fake it till you make it? Who are you faking in that situation, you or your audience?

Fear of self.

Walking on Water

“The more I love what I do, the more others do, too. This is the paradox: When you stop writing for readers’ affections, your work will affect more people.”

Can you give me a practical example of that happening in your life? (maybe talk about magazine that wouldn’t call you back and now calls you).

“The only person you need to worry about writing for is you. This is the secret to satisfaction in anything: doing what gives you life and not trying to live up to others’ expectations.”

Why does that give us freedom? Isn’t our work for other people?

“When I started writing every day, I realized a painful truth: I can’t react and create at the same time. Neither can you.”

Jon Acuff wrote a post entitled “How to be a rock star” where he said The Internet has made it ridiculously easy to promote your dream, your craft, your passion, your whatever. As someone who writes books and throws events, that is awesome. But that ease comes with a consequence. The temptation is to spend more time on promoting what you’re doing instead of practicing what you’re doing. Honing your skills, putting in the hours to improve, working hard while no one is watching. Promoting makes people think you’re great. Practicing actually makes you great. There’s a huge difference between those two things.

How do you keep shipping? Have you won the battle or do you have to keep fighting?

http://chrisguillebeau.com/3×5/never-save-it-for-later/

Jeff, thanks for being on the show today my friend. I really hope we can connect when I’m in Nashville in the fall and until then, keep shipping.
